Yup we call them that around here too. The 4-door limo has been called "die schnellste D-Lok der Welt" (the fastest diesel loco in the world) by friends of my dad lol. "CW-Wert von 'nem querstehenden Bus" (drag coefficient of a sideways bus) is another one that comes to mind :D I love my brick.
Edit: The diesel loco joke only makes sense if you know older German diesel locos. Look at the "DB 363" and you'll get it. ;) Basically designed with nothing but a straight edge and a pencil.

Rally driving back then was really dangerous. You need to be really good and have a lot of luck, otherwise you will crash. And cars from that era didn't provide that much safety... Group B rally cars killed off the really fast classes because of many accidents.
    Eighties hatchbacks:
    6:28: Suzuki Swift
    6:40: Mazda 323
7:27: Volvo 244 from the seventies
8:20: Lancia Delta Integrale (my favorite)

    10:35: Opel Ascona A

As a Volvo brick enjoyer and owner it completely breaks my heart seeing so many gorgeous 242's get trashed. The 2-doors are pretty rare nowadays, especially in decent condition and especially especially the limited "flat hood" models from Volvo's racing days in the mid to late 80's are super sought-after.
I'm currently driving a 245 but have been lusting over a modified 242 turbo forever. My absolute dream would be a light blue 242 flat hood group A homage build. 1/3 street car, 1/3 rally car, 1/3 touring car. Mhh yes.

As a Norwegian I must admit I both envy and admire the car/racing culture in Suomi and perhaps in particular Sweden.
They have loads of meets where you can compete other amateur-racers in beat up cars. Would love to visit that one day.
I had one of my weirdest experiences behind a steering wheel in Sweden a few summer vacations back. My wife, two kids and I were cruising down the highway somewhere between Gøteborg and Malmö, when we suddenly heard a very loud engine coming from our left. There, driving towards us down the on-ramp to enter the highway in my opposite direction, came a Formula car. It happened so fast that I couldn't even see if it was a Formula 1 or 2 car.
I made everybody in the car promise that they had seen the same thing I did. 😲
Could never have happened in Norway.

In Australia many Opel models were Holden badged and in the US a few models were sold under the Buick and Cadillac brands.

10:08 Sometimes 1984 or '85 someone in a Ford Fiesta thought it would be a great idea to take my right of way in my fathers '78 Volvo 244 GL. Damages to the Volvo: Bent bumper with the imprint of the Fiesta's rim on the rubber strip, broken turn indicator and markers lamp (only glass, not the bulbs!), misaligned but not broken head light. Damages to the Fiesta: With a broken wheel suspension we pushed the Fiesta to the side of the road, the driver and passengers went home on foot... 🤪It was the first of today's 11 Volvos in the family.

Yup, that GTI was a 1st Generation Golf. My mom was lended a first generation VW Golf from a job she had in -77 or -78 and totally fell in love with it, it was way more fun to drive than any car she had driven before. That car sure was a milestone, and it started the entire 80s hatchback trend. I can definitely recommend trying to find some 1st generation Golf/Rabbit owner and see if you can get a test drive.

Remember when my dad turned 40, we gave him a ride with one of the most famous Swedish rally drivers. They were driving like 150km/h at this kinda small road with only trees on the sides. They let us stand at a spot where which they came, they were literally flying like 10 meters. Was so cool to see. And my dad loves car and is a good driver and been driving like 100-120km/h with me after some dirt roads at our home. And he said he was thrilled and scared at the same time when he got to ride with that professional :D

You need to keep in mind that these smaller events has no full phase notes at all. They have a road book that only contains start-junctions where another road comes in-very severe corners and end of stage. It also contains how to get to next stage. Other then that its up to the driver how fast he dares to hammer down. 😊 We still do these no phase noted events today.

My second car was an early 90s Civic, and one thing I remember is that because it was so low even though it was completely stock, it stuck to the road like it was glued, you could push it way too hard in the corners and it would never let go, even though the tires on it were skinny as hell! 😂 I honestly had a couple of close calls when I had just swapped it out for an Opel Omega because I was so used to the insane grip the Civic had 😂

    • @Dreyno

The Civic was only slightly lower than most cars. Maybe an inch. The seats were low to the floor though. Same with the bog standard Impreza. It was 2 inches higher than the Civic but it felt like your arse was on the road. It felt like a sporty driving position but the road clearance wasn’t any less than most other cars.

I grew up in the eighties in Belgium. Rally was the thing the entire weekend about 4 times a year. We drove our BMX'es through the forests from rallystage to rallystage. Many of the rearwheeldrive rallycars did crash due to lack of 4wd, grippy tires and ESP and other driver-aids. Thats before environmentalists made it impossible to drive through the forests. Rally then moved to the streets and towns in the 90's which made it impopular by the residents. Rally is now rare and almost disappeared.
In the 90's I bought my first Opel Manta (the same as the last car in teh video) which I altered into my own rally car driving the same stages I saw as a spectator when I was a kid.

0:50 even the windscreen is still undamaged after the flip. How can a car lay on it's roof and not break all windows? I guess because of the inside reinforcement frame. It's not there for savety, it's primarily meant to make the car more stiff to be more rigid and agile.

Still using the old Volvo's in rally here in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The "newer" Volvo 940 is more popular now but you still can see a lot of Volvo 240's. A nice Volvo 940 Group H is easily 50000 - 70000 USD today here in Sweden and more sometimes if it's a really nice build. So they are not a cheap piece of shit they throw around in the woods even if it's an old Volvo.

Opel, originally from Germany, known in English speaking countries as Vauxhall, been part of GM since the 70s or so.
Today, not exactly a prestige brand, but pretty much like the French brands, you get a lot of bells and whistles for your money.
Edit: wearing a t-shirt with a late 80s Volvo wagon... legend says that if this ended up in a head on collision, the other car would evaporate 😂 nah, kudos to the brand that made seat belts mainstream, and saved more lives than their own customers. And they're still going strong.

Ireland is an English speaking country and they’re called Opel here. When GM were completely merging the two brands they kept Vauxhall in the U.K. because British people prefer British brands even if they’re rubbish. In Ireland, Opel had a far better reputation than Vauxhall so they went with Opel.

Most cars was Volvos and Opels. Nowadays Opel belongs to Peugeot and so on but in this time back in the 70s and 80s Opel had many good cars which are expensive today in good shape and also a big fan community. I like also the Volvos from the 70s to 90s most. The Sedans and the Wagons are so cool cars.

@@gerrydilleburch6626I don't think that's a Fiat livery and after comparing if it could be actually a Fiat 131 or something else, I'm sure that is a Lada.

Volvos are so durable that they have ironically gained a bad reputation in Norway. This is because their cars last forever resulting in most of the old junk cars on the road being Volvos. The old ones are dirt cheap and a favourite of certain groups of troublemakers.

My first car was an Opel Record 2.0 gls. It was the 4 door big brother to the 2 door kadett in this video. It was RWD and 5 speed manual transmission 108Hp from factory. Everytime the roads were just a bit damp I would drift the living crap out of that car pretending to be a rally driver.
    I am Danish btw.
