Antal Béke is a legendary figure in Hungary. He collects old, mostly Eastern bloc buses, trucks, cars, even restores some. That Rába you saw, it's a Rába S16 truck modified for racing, it has a Rába D2156 engine with a 16-speed sequential transmission (manual), the text on the grill is "BABA" which literally means baby. This is not all, you should see what he can do on a Hillclimb with his Ikarus 260 bus, which now has 700 hp. This man is an absolute badass. :D

Addition: Rába also manufactured tractors like the Rába-Steiger 245/250, which was actually licensed from the US (Steiger Cougar II) with Rába-MAN D2156 engine, and later they developed the Rába 300, which had the Rába D10 engine.
And Rába made engines for the Ikarus 200 (Rába D2156), 300 (some of them had Scania engines) and 400 (Rába D10) family (some models from the 400 series had DAF engines).
In the '90s they manufactured buses like the Rába Contact (290/291) and Premier (290/291) series with Rába D10 engines, they were widely used in Hungary, but now they all but vanished. Now the only bus that is made in Hungary is the Credo buses (started in 2003), ranging from the 9,5 meters midi buses to the 11 and 12 meters coaches to the 15 meters bendy buses, they all have Iveco engines.

RABA is a Hungarian truck maker that I believe was nationally owned during the Communist era.
The truck here is a RABA S16. It has a DAF 241 cab that was introduced on RABA chassis in 1980. The cab itself dates from the early 1970s - it was arguably the market leader at the time.
RABA had previously used the French Saviem F8 cab, supplied by MAN which itself used F8 cab. There was so much cab sharing between truck makers in the 1970s and 1980s that it gets a bit confusing!
Apparently, for a time RABA used MAN engines in combination with the DAF cab, but I've no idea what engine the truck here has.

Cool, I remember days back in exYugoslavia. My father had a Raba truck 230.26, from 1978 until 1994 (Ok the engine was changed to 256 turbo). It has a MAN cab an ZF 6+1. It was a preety good truck, sadly it has a max. speed for only cca 72 km/h. Greetings from Slovenia

It used to be that truckers competing in road haulage at truck races came in almost factory trucks! They just unhooked the trailer, raced and went to work, one such Hungarian truck driver had a truck like this, built in his memory by a legendary and well-known master builder and his team (+and of course with a little tuning). The original name was RÁBA, a Hungarian factory where, among other things, the legendary Ikarus buses used everywhere in the surrounding countries, but also outside Europe like Canada and the (RÁBA) Steigers big tractors, which were taken over from the Americans and modified, were built. BABA stands for BABY. These crazy people also have a 700 horsepower bus. Really good guys and professional mechanickers. They have all kinds of vehicles on their premises: Classic English bus, limousine, T34 tank...war truck.
Nowadays Hungary has a 5x European champion truck driver Norbert Kiss, who has a custom-built MAN truck (1500HP 5000NM) and a fully Hungarian team.

Yes, the Hungarocamion trucks were a common sight on Finnish roads as well. I have great respect to those long-haul drivers (perhaps especially for those from the old eastern block, given that their cars were not quite the same level of comfort or reliability as the western ones - and even the western trucks weren't that luxurious back in the eighties).
It looks like this truck has been in international traffic, as it has the TIR sign; that's sign for an international agreement providing much less hassle at border crossings for goods traffic.

2:40 well, the word Rába is the name of the factory where this truck was produced, also the name of a river where the town and the factory is located, called Győr (in german: Raab, in latin: Arabo).
The factory was founded in 1896. By 1905, the Győr wagon factory received a series of orders, mainly for the production of railway freight wagons (wine transport, charcoal transport, furniture transport, poultry transport, fruit transport) and passenger cars (guide cars, passenger transport wagons). At that time, the company had several foreign customers, including the London subway, for whose lines Rába produced 30 motor vehicles and 66 trailers. At the turn of the century, more and more emphasis was placed on road motorization, which the Győr wagon factory did not want to miss out on, which is why the car development and production department was created within the factory. The year 1904 was significant for the car factory department. Rába was the first to develop and implement four-wheel drive in the automotive industry, in the implementation of a mechanical four-wheel drive road towing vehicle. Four-wheel drive played an important role in power transmission, as commercial vehicles still rolled on iron tires at that time. In 1913, they bought the license of the Czech Praga cars, on the basis of which the production of Rába V type trucks and Rába Grand passenger cars began. In 1923, on the order of the Hungarian Royal Post, they started producing a Pe-1 type 1.5-ton, electric-powered, battery-powered truck, a modified version of which was also produced as a fire truck. A total of 34 units of the Hungarian Cybertruck equipped with a 15 kW electric motor and 1000 Ah lead battery were produced. Rába's electric vans were so reliable that some copies were still used by the capital's post offices in the mid-sixties. In 1925, a license agreement was concluded with the Praha factory. The L-type buses were built on this basis. Although Rába's first buses were marketed under the Rába name, their bodies were manufactured at the predecessor of Ikarus, the Imre Uhry Body and Trailer Factory in Budapest. The improved version of the Rába L bus is the LHo type, which was introduced in 1927 and had a longer career than its predecessor. By 1936, the Rába Super 2.5-tonne and then the Rába Speciál 3.5-tonne truck chassis were developed, on which express trucks and buses of the same name were also produced. These trucks and buses already had a five-speed gearbox and a welded steel chassis for the first time in our country. 2,500 units of this successful chassis design were produced until 1951. In 1939, the 38 M Botond military off-road vehicle was completed based on the further development of the previously successful Rába-AFI family. Five more Hungarian companies joined the serial production, the first 150 units were delivered on July 1, 1939, followed by another 1,252 until June 30, 1940. The Botond military vehicle was one of the best all-terrain vehicles of its time. However, since Rába had to settle for military aircraft production, further development of the promising all-terrain vehicle was stalled. In 1940, independent aircraft production also began, after the assembly hall and the parts warehouse were built. The first such construction, the prototype of the Levente school airplane. This year, 27 WM-21 Sólyom biplane reconnaissance and bomber aircraft, as well as 29 Focke-Wulf Fw 58 Weihe military training aircraft, will be produced. Later, license production of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 E fighter and the Messerschmitt 210 A-1 heavy fighter will begin. By the beginning of 1949, the factory was freed from the Soviet military command, and thus the Hungarian state had control over it. The production of the Bleihert-licensed V-22 forklift will begin this year. In 1963, following a government decision, they bought a license to manufacture MAN diesel engines, which would power Hungarian buses and trucks in the years to come. The D2156 engine has a huge career and is installed in almost all domestically produced vehicles. This year, the production of chassis will be multiplied and modernized. In 1969, also after the purchase of a MAN license, the production of the 16-ton Rába truck and 22-ton tractor units consisting of three-axle trailers begins. More than 18,000 Rábás of 831 and 832, nicknamed Eden in everyday language, were produced. In 1973, he bought another license for Rá. This time, the license of the heavy tractor Cougar, which was purchased by agricultural producer cooperatives for industrialized, large-scale farming, is purchased from the American Steiger factory. Rába also produced the agricultural implements that can be attached to the machines, most of which were also licensed production. About 3,200 Rába Steiger tractors were produced between 1975 and 1989. In 1980, the new Rába S truck family (what you can see in this video) with a DAF cab appears. The type was nowhere near as successful as its predecessor, the Ede. Only 8,000 of them were made. In 1985, the prototypes of the military H-series Rába trucks appeared, which at that time still had Kamaz and DAF cabs. In 1993, the new MAN F90 cab truck model family is presented. Several versions are made, including fire engine, snow shovel, forestry and saddle. However, only a few dozen such trucks were produced in four years. In 1998, Rába changed its truck cab again, they returned to DAF, this time buying the CF and LF cabs for their trucks. In the same year, the Premier city and Contact intercity buses made from the Belgian Jonckheere license were presented. The two bus types were produced until 2001, as series production was unprofitable in all three years of production. From 2003 until 2019, the MAN cab Rába H-series was produced on order from the Hungarian Armed Forces, and several versions of it were regularized by the HAF. During the 17 years of production, HAF purchased 230 units of the vehicle family. In 2014, the first fruit of the Rába-Volvo collaboration was presented, the Renault Midlum cab fire extinguisher. The Renault chassis and cabin arrived in crates from France, and were assembled in the Rába factory in Győr. BM Heros then built the superstructure on the semi-finished vehicles. During the collaboration, Rába only built fire trucks of the Renault type, a total of 113 for the Hungarian fire brigades. This is probably the last vehicle with the Rába logo for a long time.

Check out the early Paris -Dakar rallies, where they actually DID go from Paris to Dakar, and there was a special class for the support trucks, from modified Soviet bloc military vehicles to flat out special racers. Twin engined, all wheel drive, as many turbos as necessary or possible, they were monsters. There is film of them doing incredible speeds through sand, & even getting big air off dunes. King amongst them was Jan de Rooy [ occasionally Jan de Rooij ]who built & raced these crazy machines.
One year, they flew so high & fast off a dune that the truck somersaulted & rolled on landing, killing at least one of those on board. Jan immediately stopped racing them, and the organizers curbed the excesses of the event, effectively stopping the class. ruclips.net/video/zedjnP4jZQ8/видео.html

You should look up truck trial. Pretty popular in europe, massive 8x8 trucks (yes, plenty of TATRA trucks there) going through the gates placed in impossible places. A bit like rock crawling, but mostly on soil, but rules similar. And seeing these massive things at ridiculous angles with suspension crossed is something else.

Wonder if you'd seen the Lane Motor Museum has the Tatra truck you admired for sale (as well as 9 other vehicles)? Showed up in my feed from "The Drive" The description of it reads "The example seen here is a medium COE (cab-over-engine, two passenger with berth) 6×6 with an air-cooled Tatra V-12 engine and 5-speed Allison automatic transmission. It was sold new to an Alaskan logging company, and was used for field recovery and transport of broken logging equipment." I can see you grinning driving that beast. I enjoy your videos, I spent a lot of time in the EU and UK, so I can totally relate.

1:01 you know, Hungary belonged to the a.k.a. 'East Block' till the early '90s. Because of that we had a looot of car types from that era by East block manufacturers, like BA3 (Volzsszkij Avtomobilnij Zavod)(actually AvtoVAZ) or Lada, Skoda, Trabant, Zaporozec, Tavria, Oltcit, Wartburg, Yugo, etc. The green one is a Lada 2101 (1.2 or 1.3 liter, petrol engine), the white is a Lada 2103 (was the highly positioned model, with 1.5 or 1.6 petrol engine). The blue is a Renault 5 Turbo (looks like a Turbo). The 2 reds are also Lada models 2104 or 2105, AvtoVAZ's late models.

The Rába S16 does use a DAF cab from a model of DAF, the F241 series.
DAF and MAN cooperated with Rába from 1968 onwards, and it seems that Rába still exists?
Not sure about the engine, but it sounds like it could be a DAF engine too.
The truck is essentially an of the run model being used to haul semi trailers in the past, and only engine, brakes and probably suspension are tuned to do rally racing.
