    While Brutus was a custom build by some dudes shortly after WW2, The Beast Of Turin is originally build by Fiat in 1910. 2 where build but both were dismantled/destroyed. Some English guy purchased the chassis from one of the cars and happend to stumble upon the engine from the second car and put it together having to recreate the body, gearbox and radiator with only some pictures for reference

    The two outside levers on the Fiat are the gearlever and the handbrake; the latter is the main brake, the footbrake only being used in emergencies as it's liable to break the transmission! The starting procedure is to turn the engine by hand until one of the cylinders is at maximum compression, then manual advance the ignition so that the spark ignites the compressed gas. If judged correctly the engine will start effortlessly as seen in the video. Inside the cockpit there are hand controls for ignition timing, enrichening the mixture and a hand throttle (yes, it has one, very large, carburettor).
    RUclips has several videos on the car - it's worth seeking out the one showing the very first start-up after the restoration, and also the first drive on public roads, 100 miles from Bristol to Goodwood. The sight of it on the motorway at full chat (at 1000rpm), overtaking moderns, is impressive!
    There are also videos of Duncan racing the car against other pre-First World War cars - epic!

    I've seen the Beast of Turin a few times at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the clips were filmed. It's an amazing car, particularly for the era that it was manufactured in. One time when I saw it, it had to be followed up the hill by a fire truck, as they were worried about it setting the straw bales on fire.

Seriously though, it's hard to believe that only a few years earlier in 1907 the Itala car, also from Turin, won the "Peking to Paris" with a 45hp engine and this thing was around 300hp only three years later!

    5:00 It is 28,4l inline 4 cylinder, a single cylinder (7.1l) on that engine is probably larger than most of the V8 engines in USA? That thing is a beast. 2,000 lb⋅ft torque monster. Going 128mph engine speed is 1000rpm. Top speed record 132mph.
    8:12 hand crank seems to be used to set one of the cylinders to top dead and igniting that cylinder. Back kick from that engine would not just to break hands, it would tear hands of and send rest of the person probably to the next post code...

  • @petebeatminister
    @petebeatminister 6 месяцев назад +8

    Yeah, have a look at the Blitzen Benz, too, its another monster engine on wheels.
    In general, the Goodwood festival (where the video was made) has the most amazing (and expensive) cars on display every year. And some are even taking part in races!
    But there are legendary American cars also, like the Duesenberg (build by 2 German brothers who imigrated to the states, but anyway) from the late 20s. They only made 28 or so, and each is a piece of art. And cost as much as a luxury mansion, back in the days. Check out Jay Leno's video about it. He owns one - of course. :)

    The English Guy is Duncan Pittaway. He owns and restores cars in the "Chain Gang" which are race cars from the Edwardian time period. Two of these were built around a 100 years ago and they did not survive completely. Duncan found pieces as well as a frame and many photos that Fiat provided that allowed Duncan to build this entire piece of equipment with every tube and wire exactly the same as it was when it was originally built. He even uses the original clutch system that has to be taken apart and treated with powdered graphite to keep it from not releasing. Duncan states that he has replicated even the pieces of "new" technology from 100 years ago that people never see inside the engine and drivetrain. He owns several other cars with one having the engine from the Red Barron's plane which was a V-8 that all the internals are in plain sight and all the valves and lifters can be seen moving. I really want to met this guy some day.

    the car is a FIAT 300 HP 12 TER. the engine is a 4-cylinder in line. The car dates back to 1909 and was built by Fiat to beat the mile speed record. his mile speed was 225 km/h. I don't know its top speed, but I think it's the same. the flames come out because in the model we see in the video, the entire exhaust system is missing. this one in the video has been reconstructed, the two originals have been lost

  • @maiorciprian
    @maiorciprian 6 месяцев назад +1

    So basically this engine starts itself up. Almost like pulling yoursellf up by your bootstraps. The way it works is you use the hand crank to turn the engine over in order to draw mixture in the cylinders. This is done very slowly and with the ignition off so no chance of a kick back. Then you leave the engine with one of the cylinders on compression stroke. This is where the clever thing comes in. Independent of the main ignition system there is a starting magneto that basically sends a shower of sparks to the plugs when a button is pressed. In the cylinders not on compression nothing happens but the compressed mixture in the cylinder on the compression stroke gets ignited and sends the piston over starting the engine. It is basically the same system used in WW1 airplane engines. And this is also an aviation engine used in dirigeable ballons. It is a 4 cylinder inline but with a piston the size of a bed pot and a stroke of almost 10 inches.

    The days when cars were cars rather than the ''transportation devices'' they are today (not a fan of modern cars incidentally).
    Growing up we had a 1961 Hillman Minx (I admit, I love that specific make and model) and that came with a starting handle/crank handle. Very useful when the battery was flat and I remember mum actually cranking it to start the engine more than once, the neighbour offered to do it once but couldn't turn the engine. No idea if there was a trick but I know mum could do it. I purchased one for myself years later and drove it everywhere - until we emigrated and I had to sell it again.

    So, starting the beast of Turin: I´ve seen it already in the comments. You put the engine to TDC of cylinder 1 and fire the starter. The air-fuel mix in cyl 1 ignites and starts the engine.
    To start Brutus: You pull the decompression lever, so every inlet valve opens slightly. You push the starter button. Every cyl pulls a little bit of fuel from the carb, the spark plugs fire just right. The pilot/ driver notices small puffs of smoke from every cyl. He pushes the decompression lever back in! The first cyl gets its full amount of fuel and air. BOOM! It starts the engine.

    Many Italians (so am i) who are passionate about historic cars are angry towards the English team that respawned the Beast of Turin, it would seem that they asked our Turin Polytechnic for the engine of the Fiat WWI airship (exhibited in the museum) which corresponds exactly to the engine of the Fiat S76 Record (beast of Turin) to replicate its components with the promise not to disassemble it but... apparently after years and several complaints a clone engine was returned, which was unmasked after an internal inspection with a micro-cam.
    Honestly... i'm happier that that engine is spitting flames today rather than remaining embalmed in a museum
    Thanks Duncan for stealing it from us... really!
    Now as long as i survive I'll wait for the madman who creates the replica of the Fiat 806 GP, the first Formula 1 in the world.

      Both Engines for the Beast of Turin were origional designed for an Italian Airship but never used but used for the beast instead. This Information came from the guy who rebuilt the car in Australia who told everyone the history ,Fiat Dismantled thevunsold car & kept the Engine in their Museum when they were contacted by the aussy looking for parts they offered him their engine ,neither origional transmissions survived but Fiat did have the blueprint drawings & suplied copies forvthevrebuild

    Having being up close and personal with this demonic creation, I can vouch for it being an utterly visceral experience, it must have been truly alarming in it's day!! It was built purely for the land speed record, and it did hold it unofficially at just over 130 mph, I would have been petrified at that prospect, due to the tyres back then! Back then, during the dawn of automotive engineering, the only way to get big power was big capacity, hence the volumetric size of the engine. It is overhead cam though, actually quite advanced for the time. Mr Pittaway, the present owner, has some truly large vegetables to actually race this in the Edwardian class at the FOS Goodwood, England. On the straights it's a missile but very unwieldy in the corners due to it's straight line heritage and, it effectively has no brakes. It does manage mid field finishes though, probably due to intimidating the competition!

    Don't forget Britain's most infamous car "The Beast" built by John Dodd in 1972. A 27-litre V12 Mk35 Rolls Royce Merlin/Spitfire engined...stationwagon. Mr.Dodd used to drive this Beast from the UK to Spain. Later he drove the Beast back to the UK for a MoT test!! lol Jonny Smith drove the legendary Beast: ruclips.net/video/QFdhCZ517gU/видео.html

    on starting of that thing first he turns engine couple of times to get fuel into cylinders, then adjust the ignition timing from lever behind wheel to turn the timing retarded, also adjusting the air/fuel mixture to rich and then BOOM, starts it. pretty much same system as Ford model T had for example.

    When it comes to unique and "crazy cars" ...based on limitless creativity....are there few who can compare with IL TEMPO GIGANTE..... ...with unique stories connected to it. That one is to be found in Norway .....born and raised there....or should I say raced there. It has been around on international car shows and taken part in drag races.....for fun....
    The car is not made up by some car nerd who wanted to start car production.....but rather a wish to build a full scale ...and fully drivable .....vehicle based on a Norwegian
    stop-motion-animated feature car race film named Flåklypa Grand Prix (the English title was Pinchcliffe Grand Prix) that came out in 1975. The movie was a success internationally and made it to the screen in 30 countries ( including the US ).
    The race car in the movie had two engines. A front mounted V12 engine with 800 hp and 11000 RPM.....which worked up to 250 km/h (155 mph). This engine also started the rear mounted turbine engine of 1200 hp and 18000 RPM which should give speeds up to 400 km/h (248 mph). The story was that it registered as an earthquake of 5,3 on Richter scale. The race car had a lot of features build in. It had ....among else.... build in altimeter, echo sounder, TV-screen and a radar (in order to see through smoke screens from competitor cars in races ).
    The full scale car was build in 1976 ....but with change of engine in 1982. The chassis and original engine (V8 approx. 8 litre ) was from a Cadillac that had served as an ambulance in Sweden. In 1982 there was build in an engine from a Chevy 454 7,6 litre V8 big block.....which was a gift from Austrian Niki Lauda ....a legend in Formula 1 racing and three times world champion ( 1975, 1977, 1984 ) and was champion driver for both Ferrari and McLaren.
    The car is not street legal due it's sound level of 130 dB .... But if it happen to be around near you ....well....you will hear it....
    One of those who saw the movie and the car as a kid was Swedish Christian von Koenigsegg. He claim himself that this was the inspiration to establish his business and create the hyper car Koenigsegg....which has set record after record....
    There are YT videos both of the movie ( Pinchcliffe Grand Prix ) and about the car ( Il tempo Gigante )...... which you can react to......

    I understood an earlier attempt of Fiat indeed shook apart because they hadn't realized a 4-cylinder isn't balanced at all, because of the sideways movement of the piston rods. Don't know how they solved that because it's still 4 huge pots of fuel that explode.
