When your camera car is a 1903 Mercedes...
From the time period when the attitude to safety was "of course it's dangerous, just be careful with it".
Marten Hilberts all part of the charm 👍🏻
Imagine Karen in her Range Rover ramming this off the road by making a lane change without looking.
The right attitude, not a world designed for the lowest common denominator...
@@salvatoreshiggerino6810: Hopefully she's on its left side when she tries, that Fiat would barbecue her car. . .
Driven 150 miles to the show rather than trailered, that is true dedication.
That is the way it should be a car is meant to be DRIVEN!!!!!!
@@barryphillips7327the thing is priceless. I’d rather not drive it
@@stephendetky4653its very simply and reliably built so there really isnt any huge risk of driving it😁
@@stephendetky4653They built a car not a museum piece, should be driven
Age and time is such a mental thing. That car was 3 years old when WW1 started, 32 years old when Russian composer Rachmaninoff died, 34 years old when WW2 began, 80 years old when the Berlin Wall fell and 108 years old now. That car may not have seen all those things, but it has lived through them and now we are able to look at it and drive it. Crazy
And this feel when 108 y. o. Car owertaking you on the highway 😕😱🤣(Sorry for my english)
59 years later Men landed on the Moon, large leap of technology in a very tiny amount of time.
I had the same thought when i found a penny from 1904
Why? It's a machine not human body. You can turn it off, that's the reason they can last so long. No turning off of the organism!
@@aleksandaraleksic4067 if you turn a car off and leave it for 108 years I'm pretty sure it will have rotted and be completely useless. My point was, it's so old that the people who made are all dead, and the car has survived for longer than a century, and a lot happened in the 20th century which people like me (born in 2003) didnt not experience however I am able to experience a car from the 20th century, albeit through a screen.
"Blew their hats off and singed their hair"......love it!
04:55 some people like that kind of pain
Shh.. If I see this car passing I pull an hysterical tantrum like stoogie Curly.
Finally, no nonsense, no click bait, pure entertainment from an enthusiast. This is what RUclips should be about.
Yes yes. Just effing brilliant.
Without let or hindrance 👍
*[External Combustion Engine]*
That my man is what my people know as a steam engine this is a stupidly big internal combustion engine that has no exhaust manifold hence the flames

I highly respect you not wanting to change a thing on this car and having it be totally original to have it be a 100% true experience great job sir my hat is off to you
Your hat would be off too if he drove past you!
What the hell would be idea of trying to improve it? You want a modern car, go buy one. It will obviously never be as good as a modern car. The experience of driving a thing like this needs to be as original as can be. That is the whole point... getting in the mood of olden times. Respect.
@@apuuvah I don't think anyone's talking about putting a GM LS V8 into it, but rather something like putting a front axle with brakes on it in order to make it stop in less than 100 metres.
@@captainzoll3303 Nope- Even a repaint with a different hue of red would be points against the integrity of the car, and it's restoration. It would, no longer represent true history
@@email4664 but would you rather have the car sit in a shed and slowly deteriorate because everyone's afraid of driving it, or put a small amount of period-correct, reversible modifications on the thing to make it actually drivable?
I insist...at least one nighttime drive-by!
I imagine people running for their lives thinking someone's around with a semi-automatic.
It would make the world's loudest strobe light. And could you imagine all the cars parked roadside with alarms going bonkers.
Yes! Do it through the Blackwall or Tyne Tunnel. Imagine the hellish noise and satanic illumination from the exhaust.
I remember reading a car magazine article (showing my age) when i was a kid about the Beast of Turin, and one thing always stuck in my mind about her; "In second gear, at idle, the acceleration was brutal'. Awesomeness
People go insane if you smoke a cigarette at a petrol station, but nobody lifts an eyelid when the gates of hell are opened at 3:06
135 mph in 1913! Wow. My modern car sitting in my driveway can barely attain that now, 106 years later.
Yeah, but if something breaks in your car it probably won't crash and spill your unrestrained and exposed limbs and guts all over the road.
Mine does 110 downhill with the rev counter doing 360´s.
@@canto_v12 so don't crash. not rocket science. those cars were made for drivers with balls not the current gen of snowflakes.
@@lcbarker8169 thanks for the solid advice mate, gonna cancel my insurance and tell them that I don't plan on crashing now
well don't forget it does 300 hp and 2000 nm of torque
Amazing in 1910 and still amazing in 2017. I'm baffled by this piece of art.
Love this despite shes an old girl just leave her in the fast lane of the motorway and overtake brand new cars like BMW's and the look on their faces properly priceless!
To be fair this thing probably cost the equivalent of millions of dollars back when it was new, and nowadays most new cars can match its speed. Goes to show how much we've improved.
Lol and there were only made 2 examples of that car I think it costs millions
@@HotCacahuete I guess not if it's like a 1 liter Polo or something. Let's say most new cars that aren't super cheap.
@@HotCacahuete most cars can unless they're garbage Asian market or European cars
And passing cars while sounding like an idling monstrosity.
would love to see more of the raw motorway footage
What a Beast of a machine, 1000rpm 128mph on the motorway, ( imagine heading along the motorway and being overtaken by a 100 year car effortlessly passing you 😮😮) today,s cars idle at that speed, yes i imagine the problems at petrol station with the old Fiat belching flames dripping hot oil, they would be glad when he is gone and has not set fire to anything, lol haha.
28ltr 7ltr per pot, think about it, an average big coke bottle is 1.5ltr so 4.6 coke bottles to fill one one cylinder 😮😱😮 most big American V8s are around 7ltr that is only the capacity of ONE cylinder!!😮😱😮 SCARY thing is that chain drive IF it comes OFF at speed the driver would LOOSE a limb!!!!!
An Italian car leaking oil. No surprise there.
@@vederstein British engines were pretty good to at leaving their calling card oil drips on the ground, ha ha lol lol.
I'd have them park the Beast away from the pumps and use gas cans to fill her up
Old Boys playing with big Toys. So loveley to see somone is crazy enough to take this Landspeedrecord Monster on a public Road!
4 cylinders 28 liters (yes twenty eight)...
Q: What's the torque figure on this car?
A: Yes!
Q. How many ft lbs does it have?
A. All of them
Q. What's the dyno sheet looks like?
A. Yes!
Q: How much petrol does it consume?
A: Everything. Until the last drop.
My V8 is 5.7 litres and this thing has 7 litre cylinders?
Q: How do you start it?
A: You dont, it starts the Earth's revolutions.
I've got to drive it back to Bristol, so it's going to be fixed."
Epic.
Instead of loading it on a trailer, ride the beast back!
Man's got balls.
Can you imagine that thing driving up behind you spitting flames and bellowing like nothing else on earth? I'd need new underwear.
I know right? Sad to see they did not put the exhaust on the car though
That thing would run better with a single exhaust pipe. Just like other cars from that era.
Think it would perform much better with the proper exhaust system , just thought on it . Engines need the proper back pressure . hey I could be wrong , have been twice in my life
you do realize that this engine has 4 cylinders, and each piston is about the size of a 5 gallon bucket, right? and that the engine is only running 1000 rpm at 128 mph, right? there is a whole bunch of stuff you know nothing about where this engine is concerned. it is closer to a model 't' than it is a mustang. the ignition timing is determined by the driver for the conditions at the time of operation. there is no 'automatic'. the timing for 30 mph is much different than at 128 mph. 'back pressure' has little to do with this engine. it is big. it is slow. and it needs as much air and fuel as it can get. back pressure isnt conducive to this. the engine wasnt engineered for it, either. and the thrill killer? it would destroy the historical accuracy of this car.
not really. you are clueless. do you have ANY idea how big 28 liters is? my 440 chrysler engine is 7.2 liters.
Completely mad! I love it. Thanks for getting the old girl out and letter her stretch her (very long) legs!
I met this car with the owner this year at fos it sounds amazing and looks like something from the wacky races the car and owner are mental. This car is defiantly love at first sight my highlight of fos this year.
Imagine taking this beast on the autobahn and going side by side with the bimmers and porsches at 120 130 mph
Their jaws would literally drop. Not only from the crazy speed but by the bravery of the driver. Let's just say that the brakes of this monster probably won't stop this beast in a mile from such a speed. And imagine a puncture from those tiny wheels? Shivers.
I would like to think the Type 76 would receive preference to the fast lane over other models. Seeing this fire breathing beast approaching in ones rear view mirror would make anyone give way to the fast lane.
It would be absolutely hilarious!
One of the original drivers refused to drive it because it was too much of a handful at over 100mph ... so I doubt many would do such a thing.
What's a bimmer
Ahhh - The joys of historic motor car road tripping... Drive a bit... Fix a bit.... Drive a bit... Fix a bit... Its much better than just getting into a refrigerated box an arriving clean and on time!!! This way you have great stories, meet great people, and see the sights!!
But you might be late for a meeting lol.
i agree
I wouldn't care about the meeting ...... >8^)
@@CockatooDude show up to a meeting in this and I think they'd let it slide with the risk of burning the building down
@John Ulicky - Passenger cars of the time were somewhat unreliable and prone to have problems fairly regularly. Race cars of the time were not much different from a reliabilty standpoint - that is why they all were 2 passenger machines then - one for the driver, the other for an on board mechanic. The 1932 Alfa Romeo P3 was the first Monoposto (single seater) race car, as improved reliability by then made it unnecessary for an on board mechanic. This obviously contributed to higher speeds, better handling and aerodynamics.
Watched this - and related - videos a dozen times and they never get old... What a car.... I love that a small group of people maintain it....
Absolutely insane...which, for all gearheads, is exactly the point...marvelous work bringing this Beast back to life...
05:05 “...And it’ll work brilliantly for another 150 miles.” *BRRRT*
Its like the car *_want's_* to go....
Favorite car of all time . She's the distilled essence of the automotive spirit. Magnificent.
What onlookers think as you pass no longer matters.
Much like the world's fastest Indian.
It is my single favourite car of all time.
It spits flames what more could you ask for? 😍
My favorite car ever made! Just the best !! I wish they would restore Brooklands completely. To see it on the banking would be a dream.
I want to become a supervillain just so I can have this as my getaway car.
Brilliant! I like how he drives it like a common car, great attitude.
Amazing vehicle!!!! Hello from Detroit. I hope to make it to Goodwood some day.
A simply splendid chap and his magnificent beast.
Fantastic car. Thanks Mr. Pittaway for making it roadworthy.
Sono commosso..... riesco solo a dire GRAZIE!!!
This is a rare man that “gets” owning a car like this...embracing the good, bad and the ugly! I love that beautiful automobile.
That is a cool car and I like the flames and the snappy popping exhaust note on that thing
Thank you for preserving this history!
What an absolute beast, love it. Thanks for sharing.
This guy is one of my hero's.
When the engine of your racecar is actually the heart of a fire breathing dragon. 😎
Thank you Duncan, words cannot say!
When it first started it brought tears in my eyes. 😆 Fantastic!
How cool it must be to go on a road trip with this....awesome!!
What an amazing piece of engineering. Lovely sound.
Part of a Fiats rich racing history right there, sensational
Seems like the right car for the right fella, great combination!
Hats off to you guys, I love the get in it and drive attitude!
I would start this next to a Prius owner
I'm a remorseful Prius owner who would love to trade places with the driver of this beast!
Pity you driving a Prius, lol.
RiptideTheShark98 What's with this infantile obsession with Priuses? If you don't like them then don't buy them. Oh, it bothers if you if *others* buy them? Well, that's not very healthy now is it? Fact is it's fair to assume you people have some issues and the only way you pettyminded cretins can feel a little better about your insignificant selves is to put down people even lower down than yourselves. Proud of yourself little man?
It's a free market, people can drive whatever h*ll they want. Nobody forces you to buy what they buy. Drive whatever heck you drive (most likely you're a 14 year old still years away from driving) and be happy. If you can...
Mind your own business and don't feel your world collapses if people drive around in cars you don't like. When you grow up you'll find there are more crucial and important issues to get upset over.
You know what I think? I think Priuses represent a change - and you fear change. All apes fear change. It's in their nature.
Now you're going to do the reasonable and decent thing and admire this Fiat S76 for what *it is* and not make some arbitrary connection of *zero relevance* to this historic car because that's the first thing that springs into your feeble mind.
You will never drive this thing so to what avail your comment?
Next time a Prius owner comes driving pee yourself in anger for all I care. Say what you said in public btw and see what normal people think of your obsession with hating Priuses and their owners.
+barry phillips : Well, that escalated pretty rapidly. Apart from that, it wouldn't be popular to drive the fire breathing monster in rural Australia during the grain harvesting season (usually a time of fire bans), or they'd be chased up the road by angry farmers.
Haha lol
Fantastic video, fantastic adventure, great bunch of guys but What a beautiful car with a very big heart.
Amazing that the 1907 Fiat GP car was a 16,000 cc 4 cylinder hemi head engine and it produced just a 130 hp, only 4 years prior to the S76! It won the 1907 French GP with Felice Nazzaro at the wheel.
I would love to own something like that. What a wonderful piece of engineering!
Salute. Awesomeness at its peak. Marvellous machine
Holy cow, 0:53!
I love this glorious beast
What an incredible machine, it so big and looks so powerful and when the engine is running it breaths fire like a dragon. It earns it's name, The Beast.
Breathtaking , enveloping , gorgeous 👍🇬🇧
Really a great video. I enjoyed immensely! My Fiat 500's great grandfather,,
Amazing machines!
Sort of gives a new meaning to "getting the wind in your hair" lol absolutely wonderful! :D
Can't get better than this!
When he first cranked it over, I thought the headers were off, but it doesn't even bother with headers! Marvelous, F1 needs a bit more of this approach.
The engine kick at @0:52 is INSANE!!!
Wow those old cars are so awesome you guys keep up the good work
Total respect, just love this !
Astoundingly good !!!
car that spits flames like that will always be inherently appealing.
It is amazing how century+ old cars can still be made to run AND race. Glad the Beat of Turin is one of these lucky preserved.

ive only seen a few early 20th century cars in my life time and most of them understandably drive really slowly and carefully seeing this monster doing motorway speeds is bizzare

Outstandingly cool.
I can imagine people thinking Satan was driving that thing instead of a mad Italian.
It speaks volumes for the balls of Mr Pittaway that he would dare to drive it any distance on a public road, never mind 150 miles.
At only 300rpm in top gear your licence is in serious danger if you pass a speed camera.
What a pity those cameras are everywhere. An itchy throttle hand somewhere on a quiet motorway just after dawn, sounding like a mobile artillery barrage. Knowing you are the undisputable King of the road.
Imagine a race meeting where the list of entrants includes this Fiat, the 1903 Darraq V8, Party-Thomas's 'Babs' being chased by 'Brutus' from Sinsheim and the Packard-Bentley 'Mavis'?
The properties of the engine came from the steam engine as all early engines did. Huge bore and stroke ,and low compression.
