the more i look the more i see Stefan. The idea of using charlie's piece (music) to structure the video is brilliant. A great counterpoint to the raw, brutal forces that we witness from the off (the two kids covering their ears give it away), yet the structure and relaxed tone of the music belies the brutal realities of war (WW1 engines, fighter planes, castles etc) .... and of course just as in war, the magic of humanity re-emerges, the humour, good will, camaraderie, daring do... the warp and weft of life! ... lovely stuff, bravo!
Thanks for the kind words Chris! Sometimes having to find a way to fix a problem (wind noise in this case) results in a more interesting outcome. Glad you appreciated it :)

Haha, you're right - it never occurred to me before. 'Dripping oil on the Boulevard of dreams' or 'Boulevard of broken eardrums' would be much more suitable :)
That is such a wonderful video... beautifully edited and very atmospheric with the soft piano music. I have a technical question please- I would like to know what RPM more or less the darracq is running when on country roads. 600, 700? That is such a magnificent engine... incredibly compact for 25 liters
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for the comment! The Darracq will cruise at 84mph at 1000rpm. I think full power is at 1200rpm - but a lot of the time when pootling through villages (or waiting for people to catch up) the car is turning over much more slowly. If you're running low on fuel you can even switch off one bank, making it an economical in-line 4 cylinder 12.5 litre :)
Well, ... On your next trip, I hope you'll buy a noise-cancelling earmuff. A lot of youtubers have successfully tested a simple foam pad (used to make beds) that seems to work. I appreciate your humour in preventing the flood of criticism (all negative, of course...) about the music. It's true that the mechanical music just at the start of the film was a feast for the ears, but speed is not a music lover and generates more or less annoying noises in the wind that are hardly compatible with the melody of the valves, pistons and exhausts... I can only imagine what it took to get to this event, with spare parts, oil and some spare change for the tea break! Nevertheless, congratulations to the pianist for this little piece of real music !! Best Regards from France
I have a DJI mic with some fancy noise cancelling tech now - so next time I'll give it a go and see how it copes with the world's biggest car engines at speed :)
Very cool road trip, really enjoyed this video. I have figured out 3 of the cars, but there is 2 others I haven’t seen before. There is what looks to be a white car and a light blue one, could you tell us a bit about them. Thanks.
They're both specials. The blue one is a 912 De Dion Bouton with a Curtiss OX5 aero engine (same as in the green Monarch). The white one is inspired by the Mercedes cars that raced at Lyon and uses vintage Daimler/Mercedes parts - I think from 1913.
I know it can be frustrating to have music on a car video sometimes but once you’re at speed on these open vehicles all you get is wind noise - which is REALLY unpleasant to listen to. Have a watch of the Beast of Turin trailer for some pure unadulterated engine noise :)

Was this shot on the way to (or from) making the film about the Targa Florio?
I went to see the VSCC boys and girls yesterday at Mallory Park. One meeting I make sure I attend every year!
I've only been to Mallory once, but really enjoyed it. This was a trip to Lyon, just to revisit the site of the GP 100 years earlier. We made such trips every year - to Dieppe and Amiens etc - but this was by far the longest one :)
@@StefanMarjoram Ah, I was wondering if the two trips had been combined. I did really love Scicilian Dream.
I've been to the VSCC race at Mallory pretty much every year since i was 10 or so in 96. Always loved the big Aero cars. My first job when I was 14 was working on pre-war Austins and I did a small amount on a De Dion Bouton from 1898 for the London to Brighton.
@@1959BB Awesome! Do say hello if you spot me sketching somewhere :)
@@StefanMarjoram rather than just saying hello, I've bought 5 of your prints this evening instead. I love your drawings, I decided to get a few of my favourite VSCC cars.
@@1959BB Wow! That was a nice surprise to come home to - thanks very much! Will add a little original sketch in with them :)
I love this video, the high speed onboards in particular. To bad the sound of the piano drowned out the "symphony" that those engines produce.
Once the cars are at speed all you hear is wind noise :)
@@StefanMarjoram Well, depends where one places the microphone! :)
@@iivaridark6850 Microphone? I was on a week long trip and all my clothes, camera, sketching materials and wet weather gear had to fit in one small backpack. This wasn’t a Top Gear shoot :)
That was lovely. I totally understand having Charlie’s musical backdrop. What was she playing?
So glad you liked it. I think it's a song by a band the youngsters listen to called Green Day :)
@@StefanMarjoram thank you. I have heard of them.
gooooood i love this channel
gloriously silly!
That sums up those trips perfectly :)
Charming.
