- Duncan Pittaway is a Goodwood legend, but not many know that there is far more to his arsenal than the incredible Fiat S76 Beast of Turin. In fact Duncan's car collection is as large as it is varied, ranging from Bugattis to Cheetahs, from Invacars to pre-war Monarch's.
But what is the story behind the cars? Who is the man who owns all these incredible machines and what is it that makes him tick? In the second of our Goodwood Masters films presented by Motul, looking at the people and firms behind some of the classic car industry's greatest machines, we visited Duncan to explore his background, the reason behind his eclectic collection and what makes him tick.

Which of Duncan's cars is your favourite?
The beast of turin
That thing is legit the real king of the roads
But basically all of them
That Type 35 Bugatti..... 😍😍😍
Not necessarily any cars, but the smell of his workshop in my imagination :) Fantastic and lucky man. Well done!
Bugatti
Tucker !! Everyone needs loyal sidekick in life !!!!
but do love the beast ! as there nothing else like it !
but I prefers something more girly so it would like to own the type 35 !!!
I really don't know what to say, but Duncan probably saved my life, some 9 or so years ago I was a young depressed directionless young man, on downward slope towards the end. And by chance I came across the Edwardian shorts that were on the GRRC, shortly after that the first of the beast of Turin videos caught my eye, and there he was, standing there a beacon of purpose and happiness. Duncan is a man I find utterly inspirational, working on and using these soulful machines on a near daily basis for fun. It was watching Duncan enjoy his cars I started to see the light and find my own purpose and direction again. And for that a mere thankyou probably isn't enough, I'm now living a happy life, I bought, work on and drive the pants off my own classic mini now and I'm looking forward to going into prewar cars myself when I can afford it. I hope to meet him one day, but I'll probably not know what to say, other than Thanks Duncan.
This is incredible, so glad you could find inspiration from Duncan. Would you mind if we shared your story?
@@GoodwoodRR you absolutely can. It's so important for people to speak positively about mental health and how they've recovered.
Lovely. Thanks for sharing!❤
If the devil has a letterbox it would look like the Fiat's exhaust ports.
I love how much credit he gives to Tucker. These two are curators, caretakers, spokesmen, ambassadors for these cars.
Easily one of the best videos this channel has ever done - just fantastic!
Thank you for making that video it's genuinely one of the best 20 odd minutes of automotive brilliance there is.
The way he brings these cars to life is the essence of these automotive obsessions that many Including myself can relate to. Thank you for showing the value of the joy we get from working on each of our own drivable machines.
Absolute Legend! Goodwood wouldn’t be the same without him and his beasts. Huge Respect
I truly believe this is what humility and passion feels like.
Ah, Duncan, you gloriously eccentric and truthful and genuine man, and Tucker, and Goodwood, and all those wonderfully not-over-restored belching beasts of motor cars ... Thank you for the hours of entertainment you've given me!
Would anyone here work on their cars and have grease on their hands while wearing a tie and shirt? The great man here is Tucker, the loyal, quiet and steadying influence alongside Duncan!
Gentleman through and through. From his tie to his smile ro his Beast of Turin. Celebrating life!
Habe kaum ein Wort verstanden, aber der gute Mann, kommt total sympathisch rüber!
Ein Fan aus Germany, thanks!
I love that he uses his machines without letting modern considerations stop him.
22 minutes of pure joy
Most of us will never be in a position to own these marvellous machines,. But the ethos of being fully absorbed in the process , to use the machine as intended, and to love the task, is the message. I think this guy holds the true spirit of car enthusiasm. We might only have an old Golf GTI, 106, Alfa, 850R, or whatever else, but the message is the same: fix them, know them, drive them, cherish them. This brings the true satisfaction of classic car ownership. And I’ll bet this dude would be pleased to talk to anyone who shared that passion, no matter what they drove.
'We might only have an old Golf GTI, 106, Alfa, 850R, or whatever else, but the message is the same: fix them, know them, drive them, cherish them". '
I pity those who do not wallow in the obsession and total absorption into finding, restoring , maintaining these cars themselves. Any one with the cash
can buy a vintage car and hire out, but it takes more than that to be a "car guy" (or gal). The joy and the rewards of doing it yourself are immesurable. .
I am on my 130th car since 1964, the majority European and British. Currently I am enjoying my 1963 pull- handle, three main MGB. It won't be my last car.
My favorite in the video, BUGATTI.
Tucker sounds like a proper Bristolian. Gurt lush! Looks like the Bugatti outing was to Chew Valley Lake
He is a true gentleman and loves what he does, him being a 'collector' is a byproduct to what his actual goal is, that is to enjoy these machines to the fullest - that is restore them with original parts, no modifications, and drive them as they were meant to be.
What a fantastic documentary about Duncan and his passion for getting his hands dirty. I’ve met Duncan many times at Goodwood meetings and he always has a smile on his face, and oil on his hands, and is always happy to chat about his cars and passion.
He’s doing what he enjoys and is very fortunate to be in a position to do so.
This has to be one of the best RUclips videos I’ve watched for a long time. I absolutely loved it. We need more documentaries into these interesting engineers and car collectors lives and workshops. Simply superb viewing.
Thanks to Duncan and his team for making such an enjoyable video. Keep up the fantastic work 👍
love, love, love, for the violence of the Fiat S76 9:00. Purely fantastic.
I love the passion of Duncan. The joy he gets is only exceeded by those he shares his magnificent automobiles with! Cheers from across the pond. Happy motoring!
What a great film - lives the dream in every sense.
An astonishing personality. Quite endearing actually. Pure passion.
A contented man, what more could you ask for in life.
What a lovely story! Thanks so very much! === Now, please, we need your leadership in getting this motorsport world serious about carbon offsets and whatever else is necessary to produce a world in which our children and grandchildren will also be able to enjoy these things that are so dear to us!
Absolutely fantastic, what a guy, what a place, what cars !!!
A lovely film about a lovely man. Well done :)
15:50 "There's an element of fun that you can have with transport that isn't necessarily showing off..."
Shows the S76 spitting foot long flames out the side on tickover 😂
IF you look CLOSELY you see the valve stems in some videos
Duncan has an incredible passion for life, extraordinary person. Great video 👍🏻
Wow, this really is a great Goodwood film and fascinating to hear him talk about his own passion in preparing the cars.
Now that's a man that has all he'll ever need, life sorted.
Such a lovely guy! I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Festival of Speed this year; I asked why he hadn't brought his TVR S with him and he laughed.
I really enjoyed this film, thank you Duncan and Goodwood..
Total respect, that’s the best half hour viewing yet 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏆🏆🏆
I love his story! What an amazing shop and collection of cars and bike.. A Cheetah to The Beast of Turin .. and they all get used, “hard”, Life doesn’t get much better than this!
It’s a guiltless passion which is perfectly fine when keeping these works of art going for future generations.Once one develops the sense of feel, hearing and timing masters their full performance.Jay Leno’s Garage got me started watching all the early vintage automobiles and now yours.I very much enjoyed watching your videos, thank you!!!
The only person I've ever seen working on a car in a white shirt and tie. Terrific! Not sure Mrs.Pittaway would agree......
What a great man with an amazing passion for us all to enjoy. The beast of Turin is my favourite car period.
This guy is an inspiration to mere mortals like me.
I'm speechless.
I love that he always wears a tie no matter what he's doing. Very cool guy
That was a thoroughly enjoyable film, thank you Goodwood R&R :)
This is the best motoring video I have ever watched, what an enthusiast, I have seen Duncan several times racing at Goodwood and it is always such a spectacle. Well done Duncan!
The Bugatti for sure! What a delight was to watch this video! Many thanks to all the involved on this project. All the best to this Gentleman and all his endeavours! Cheers from Portugal!
Great Film. Love to see a person follow their Passion. Well Done Sir Duncan. Favorites: Bugatti & the Beast of Turin. The steam car is very intriguing also. Cheers!

That, was wonderful.
The Fiat S76 is an awesome beast, but the checkerboard GN is my favorite. Total respect for this vintage enthusiast.
Wonderful film. I've just spent the winter with a pal rebuilding a 2 litre Plus 4 Morgan... your comments about people not realising the time that needs to be put in really resonated. Thank you...
Thank you for for showing me your workshop and your passion for what you do, absolutely amazing and I totally get where you are coming from.
What an amazing story...only in the UK...a man in a tie, in a shed, creating magic... Amazing!!!
Crazy just how fast some of those old cars are
Wonderful. Some lovely content coming through the channel recently. Much appreciated.
Glorious! A fascinating, and interesting watch. Keep those cars alive!

Great bloke.
Really enjoyed!!!!!!!!!!!
Making the connection with the past through the seat of your pants. Joyful!
The Beast of Turin is one of my favorite specific cars. Kind of like Rowan Atkinson's McClaren F1. A special car with a great story.
McLaren
Fantastic video! It's great to see someone who is so genuinely passionate about old cars and still uses them for their intended purpose!
What a great story beautifully told - Thank you.
A sheer delight, Duncan handing out bags of inspiration. Thank you.......
Lovely, enjoyed hearing Duncan's story and seeing what he gets up to. Thank you for making this short film - much appreciated.
He speaks for so many of us. Doesn't matter if it's vintage or semi new. Did I see a Cheetah in the back of the garage?
Well done that man, what more can I say ?
I love the Beast of Turin, it's just so barking mad.
Barking !
That's It!!! I'm going to get a Persian Rug under my MG! For Proper repairs and maintenance! 🎩🇺🇸🇬🇧🎩🇺🇸🇬🇧🎩
Wonderful film!
Been wanting to watch this for ages thankyou grrc
Legend of a man. I love seeing his cars race.
Inspirational!
Fantastic story. Thanks for sharing. The passion is amazing.
What a fascinating film about an absolutely fascinating man. I'm afraid I'm too poor to go to Goodwood, mainly due to sharing a passion for buying parts and machines to make the parts I can't buy for my own obsession. Maybe one day I will take my Domiracer to the meeting.
The beast of Turin, is so amazing.
GREAT story!
Just watched it three times . , , better each time.😉
Attitude is simply brilliant . Would love to get to UK to see the cars and meet the man
Best film to date on this channel.
Loved this my dad had a 64 barracuda 273v8 three on floor dark blue grey interior that and his 53stude were the two cars I know he loved
Great story and an even better person. I followed the Fiat's build on The Old Motor. Highly recommend it.

Brilliant show
What a hero
Wow, so amazing! 👍
Well done. Very inspirational!
Thank for this ❤thanks Duncan I get it ❤
I've read an article Duncan wrote somewhere in the internet that I can no longer find.
It is about the time he drove the newly-reassembled Bugatti from UK, through France, all the way to Monaco for the Historic GP race, won his class, then drove it back home again.
AS it should be !
Big Respect! It’s definitely not easy to do at all. And yes, the workshop is a dream of mines.
