Have you been to Japan before or is it on your list of travel destinations? After my trip to Japan in 2018 I was devastated because I lost half of my video footage due to a hardware failure. Therefore, on this trip in 2024 I tried to be extra careful with backing up my files and luckily I found a great platform to do so. Just wonderful, Karin. Loved when it switched to night. And I love seeing how the two of you are different and similar. It looks like you've chosen well in life. I've not yet gone to Japan, but this surely makes me keep the thought alive.
Thanks so much for watching and your kind words, I appreciate it! :) I love that we share the same interests and were both so excited to explore Japan together. Fingers crossed you might go there yourself one day :)
The visceral reaction I get to those new 500 yen coins that STILL only works in half of the vending or parking machines... Great video as always! Looks like we have another one or two to go before we get to Tokyo!
Another great video. I do not think there is a right or wrong thing about the mist filter, it is all to do with each person preference. I like it. When it gets really busy with people around me then, I often switch to a point and shoot otherwise it gets overwhelming. I always looked forward to your videos, keep them coming.
Thanks so much for watching! :) And yes, you are right about the personal preference, it's a polarizing look and opinions surely differ. I love the subtle look at daytime, for night I might look into getting an even lighter strength filter for my taste maybe.
I feel a mist filter - or similar - is a needed in the urban night. It makes you feel blinded by the lights. In a "perfect" lens they only become small white dots... Good work!
It always amazes me how much taller Karin's wife is. Another great video, Karin, even though you apparently had issues with your video camera for this one. Also, to answer your in-video question: I think the photos with the Pro-Mist filter look good; the effect is there, sure, but it's not overwhelming.
Going back to Japan in February for the 2nd time. Definitely going to do more night shots doing digital XPan photography. Thanks for the tips! Come photograph NYC soon!!
I have to admit that I am super jealous - have an awesome trip, I am sure it will be great! I have never been to NYC but I would looooove to come! It’s on the list for next year :)
I like the mist filter effect at night with all the stunning light you had to work with. However the misty look might “date” your photos. Think 10-15 years from now when the look will be outdated, but then again that is why people still shoot film today. Nice photos with a great camera/lens combo.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! And yes, interesting take you mention there regarding the trend aspect of the look! Let's see how the images or look on general will hold up over time. :)
Thanks so much :) The backpack is a Vanguard Veo Flex 47M, but I modified the top and attached another clip to it, to make it into a rolltop. Mine is pretty old (and falling apart so I am actually on the lookout for a new one), so I am not sure if the model is still available
Japan at night looks so much like the 1980's did! BTW, I always find that the black mist filters improve night images a lot, especially when there are lights involved. Without it, the lights are always too bright and not present enough. The pro-mist tends to help mimic what the eye really sees.
True, I think the 80s vibe is also what makes it so cinematic. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I feel like the pro mist look can be a bit much at times but overall I agree that it makes light sources more pleasing and less blown-out
Cool video and great shots. On your question on the diffusion filter, I work as a retoucher and I almost always add a similar softness to photos I work on. Unless it's for advertising I advise photographers to use those filters, because "in camera" still looks better. And yes always always back up your files. At least on two different storage solutions.😅
I use the mist filter even with film. I have a Tiffen BPM 1/8, and it is so subtle. You notice it when it's not there, more than when it is. But it makes night scenes, especially, just come to life a little more.
Interesting, thanks for sharing! I usually only use it on digital but it also helps to achieve the soft look with film so it might be work experimenting with it a bit more
Nice video ! 👍I will like to use in the night a diffusion filter with a very relative sharp lens in film , but in a digital camera , a vintage lens, with a diffusion filter looks cool !
Great video and images … I like the mist filter effect. 📷🇯🇵🍺😄 PS: Puke flavour notwithstanding, they say there’s no such thing as bad beer … it’s just that some beers are better than others!
Wow Karin, this is one of your best videos yet! I don’t know why this one particular stands out to me, but the writing and editing is sooo on point! The matchcuts, music, jokes, interactions, pacing - you got the flow so right on this one😮💨 Also the fact that this video was the one with the “bad” footage is absolutely not noticeable! Also also, I think I will need to look more into the whole Osmo Pocket setup🫣 Liebe Grüüüßle🫶
Thanks so much for the kind words Teo, I appreciate it! ☺️ The "flow" is probably the most important thing in videos -therefore I am glad to have found a working rhythm in this one. And thanks, I am glad the footage didn't look too bad in the end, it was a loooot of hours spend on color correction though haha. Without the Osmo I probably wouldn't even have film half of the amount of videos in Japan, it's a true game changer in my opinion! :)
A 1/4 pro-mist lives on my GRIII. Recommend two NAS devices, one backing up the other as the enclosures die after 10years or so. Your best images, store in the cloud.
That sounds like the optimal backup routine! I haven't gotten myself a NAS yet due to the costs and still work with external SSDs and HDDs, backing up everything manually - but with the amount of data I produce each year I think it's about time to have to make the investment...
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words. :) Hahaha, yes, the automated audio recording in different languages needs some getting used to and I was pretty shocked myself when I listened to it in German for the first time. I left it activated though for those people who don't speak English and don't enjoy reading subtiles (like my parents).
Interessantes Video.
Next thig you know, you need a Summilux Pre-Asph instead of the black mist filter for that organic Leica look ...... this rabbit hole is spiraling deeper and deeper 😅
A Summilux steel rim would be the dream, so GAS is going strong! But nooo, I have to resist! And to be honest, I am pretty happy with the Summicron and like how versatile it is.
What is the price of film there at the moment? ysed to be dirt cheap and they had huge fridges of the stuff. i took the opportunity to go to japan in between my Masters photography degree and took a year off. I lived in Tokyo and hadn't shot 35mm for years so i only had a hasselblad 503cw. I took that thing everywhere. Japan is an amazing city to take photos in. People are a lot more accepting but its easy to forget that just because they are accepting doesn't mean its not rude sticking a camera in their faces. Something that my Japanese friend told me as soon as I got there. That said. The amount of photo opportunities is staggering there. Its difficult not to fall into the cliche. But at the time film was not premium and the amount of photo shops there is huge so I would just shoot everything that moved. It was a dream of mine to visit and I had actually moved there for a year which blew my mind every day. I shot hundreds of acros film and pretty much only slide film for colour. I would use mirror lock up and most shots were pin sharp. I have been back a couple of times and would probably head back there soon. But this time around I would take my Mamiya 7Ii and a MP240. Have fun!
Sounds like a dream! So amazing to hear you were able to spend an entire year there, I would love to do the same one day but sadly that is very out of reach for me at this stage in life. Regarding the film prices: They are not cheap at all at the moment sadly, mostly even more expensive than in Europe. I visited a couple of photo stores in an earlier episode where I also show current film prices, you can find the video in the Japan playlist on my channel in case you are interested! :)

Yeah,I actually agree, I didn’t love the look either bad had to use the footage since I wouldn’t have enough otherwise. I tried it in a different context, with proper recording setting and less artificial light sources and it looked way better in this subtle way, so I feel like here it was just a bit too much.
@ No worries - I can understand, technology is evolving so quickly! So cool though that you are on RUclips nonetheless and trying to get behind it! In case you want to change the audio, this is what you need to do: When watching a video you can go to the little gear icon. There you can find a setting called "Audiotrack". And here is where you can change it to English (Original). Good luck :)
Bitte die automatische Synchronisierung künftig wieder weglassen, zumindest vorerst, solang es so schrecklich gruselig ist😱. Wir können dir auch so folgen, auch wenn der Akzent sehr typisch deutsch ist. Danke
