I feel you here. I own it, as well as Leicas M, Q and Sonys. It’s a lovely camera but my other cameras are seeing more light these days. The APSC 24mp format does not cut for me anymore neither. As being bound one lens, smaller sensor and 24mp makes cropping a challenge for large format printing which is what I’ve been doing a lot lately.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  10 месяцев назад +2

Thanks for your comment Gaston, I appreciate it!
Interesting to read that the resolution of 24mp was also a limitation for you. Do you crop your images a lot? And what sizes do you usually print? Coming from 35mm film, a 24mp digital sensor felt like more than enough for me - but I usually don't crop my images and don't print much larger than A3 size.

@@KarinMajoka24x36. I suffer from Pixel Peeping dissorder 😂. Yeah for most case, 24mp apsc can be good but it all depends on the crops. I’m working on a deco architecture project and walking around with a 35mm and wanting to isolate a detail at 75mm equivalent can take a big toll on resolution. With 60MP I’m happier with the image quality. I love Fuji colors so much that I was thinking to get a Fuji XT5 but I sold all my Fuji glass when I parted ways with my XT4 so Sony A7Rv and Leica M11 is what i’m shooting daily. Also the AF on the Fuji is sluggish, camera heats up quick and battery is average. But I still love it and won’t sell it 🙃

I've printed and sold plenty of 24x36inch and bigger prints shot with my XT2. Even on my 16mp XE1. From galleries to private collections, album covers, book covers and magazine spreads. No one has ever looked at the prints up close and complained. I sold prints to both Leica and medium format photographers. Pixelpeeping is simply pointless if you print which I do all the time. I want to see the full image, not the not so sharp corners. I've also done perfect A3 prints with my 1-inch old Sony rx100 . I'm actually very happy with the APS-C prints after I switched 7 yeaes ago coming from years of Canon Fullframe

Full Frame…. The 28mm lens has been hard to get used to, but I’ve adjusted. Like you, I try to process or even crop as little as possible. Though I rarely use it, there’s a cropping thing in the view finder. I always shoot RAW which saves the entire file regardless of the cropped view finder image. Like you, I’ve shot manually (yet with autofocus) for years. But since the Leica is much slower than my Sony’s, I’m using aperture mode while on the street….but this can create more time in post…. Still, I’m in love with the Q3. View finder thing=it gives 35mm crop lines

I definitely understand the manual focus issue, as being an old film guy, it bugs me as well. The OVF may not have manual linkage to the lens, but I don't buy the argument that it isn't a real OVF experience, as it's the framing and composition of an OVF that matters most. We have the EVF and the corner pop-up for manual focusing. About batteries and cards, well that's digital photography and nothing to do with the X100V.
So I have a solution for you. Buy an X-Pro3 (or the 4 when it comes out) and a Voigtländer X-Mount 23mm f1.2 Nokton as it is fully manual with the electronic contacts necessary to communicate fully with the camera. With these X-Mount Voigtländers we get manual focusing rings with distance and depth of field scales. The 27mm f2 Ultron is my choice for street photography as it's so small and light. I have the 23mm, 27mm and 35mm versions on order for my X-Pro3. Once I have some time on them, I'll be posting videos on them.

Loved the video. Loved the concept. Which makes me a serial butterfly lover! I got into repairing range finder cameras and stripping them down to the blades. CLA and putting them back together. But my love of film and which rangefinder made me cheat on so many models. I love the voightlander vito ii they are not a loved camera and are well made German engineering and take amazing photos. The canon QL 17 has a very sharp lens. My whole collection costs far less than my friends Leica collection of 4 cameras which I think he said he got £12500 for! I have the original X100 and love it for shooting street photography. The manual focus is the same as on your 100v and drives me crazy.

I got my X100v for a trip to Italy. Was tired of carrying a big Nikon D750 with a big f2.8 lens. The Fuji was a dream to carry. The styling of the camera is exceptional. It is simply gorgeous. It is almost like a fashion accessory. I found the image quality to be excellent. I got a lot of great images.
At the same time I became very much aware of the limitations of a single fixed focal length. There were a lot of shots that presented themselves but not taken for that reason.
I sold the camera shortly after my trip. If I had not needed the money to get something to replace it with I would have loved to have kept it. It is fully capable of being a camera one owns and uses his entire life. At times I regret selling it but the gear I now have is more versatile.

*If* Fujifilm would *built-in* a real *rangefinder*, this would change *everything* ! Think Pixii from france, which uses the same 26 MP Sony Sensor, but with extraordinary DR (it does outperform the M10 35mm Sensor - for real, check DxO) and a optional monochrom mode...the only problem hereby...1) the price (~3K) and 2) "only" APS-C...but being upgrade-able, and the rangefinder is being build modular...so if on day xy comes a better Sensor - np, you can upgrade ! Not possible with any other camera atm, for example.
Back to Fujifilm - i'd love to have a real rangefinder built-in, just like any M series, or "Leica" CL, CLE, Zeiss Ikon, Bessa R series, Hexar RF, etc. The X100VI *should* have a real optical rangefinder - not just a combined EVF/OVF...that would be a kickass feature...same would go for an upcoming X-Pro4 someday.

Really interesting video. I shoot Fuji for work and I'd never move to a different system for digital work, at least for the time being. Still, I've never had any interest in any X100 model (it's the fixed lens for me and the ridiculous prices). I understand where you're coming from, and the limitations of the X100 line. That's why I believe Fuji's plan could be to position the Xpro line more like a contender for Leica in the digital rangefinder market, especially with the numerous manual lenses that are appearing for the X-mount.

if you want to sustain that analogue feel and control try an older/used xt-2 for a fraction of the price of the overhyped x100v with vintage lenses, the knobs behaving like an analogue camera and the superb viewfinder on those older models just feels awesome. some analogue buffs like me even prefer the sensor on those earlier xt-t models over the newer sensors. however i suggest sticking to the premium line, not the xt20 or xt30 but the xt-2 or xt-3. only there you have 2 dedicated dials for exposure time and iso

TLDR. Fuji x100 series are not made for manual focus. It's not really surprising is it? All compact digital cameras are focus by wire - they are built for AF with an electronic servo-manual focus feature added. It's never going to be the same as a manual focus lens.

Options are there to use or not. Don’t need or want the options? Ignore them. Many photographers ignore all the video functions on their cameras and so can you. Life is about choice. One reason we purchase a particular camera is because of the functions they provide, or in your case, what they don’t provide.

One and most important is what do you raeally want the other one is you make a wrong choice when it moved from film to digital (after decades ofdoing it film all formats for me is no film anymore please). You could go for often overlooked X-pro 1 which is reasemblance of the film stock sensor, Leica M9 or Pixii which all cost way less then m11. Seems that budget is not concerning you so have a happy shooting with m11.

When I eventually gave up using film for professional work because it just made sense I got rid of a whole lot of my kit and went with the Canon 5 d and really liked it. I did not want to go back to film even though I love it. I went through the same thing. 40+ years of film and wanted to go digital which fit my retirement budget better. Tried the X100F and enjoyed it but was too different than my M3 and M4. Sold it, did film another year and gave it a second try with the older X100T. Again decided not rangefinder enough and bought a friends Leica M8. Liked it so much I quickly found a replaced sensor M9 and sold the M8. Now I have added a Monochrom and could not be happier with the switch. Rather than shoot film once a month, I shoot one or two times a week with the digital Leicas and get to use all my favorite M lenses.

Thank you for sharing your journey, really happy to hear you found a system that works for you. The old Leica M cameras are beautiful, I tried the M8 for a brief while. Sadly the camera was not for me (mainly because I was missing a physical ISO dial, the shutter was a bit too loud for my taste and overall it felt a bit so clunky and old) but I loved the results from the CCD sensor.

Great video about the need for each of us to really assess how much we value particular types of workflows and experiences. I personally enjoy shooting with both digital and film cameras but completely understand the OP’s sentiments about added layers of responsibilities digital workflows require. I personally believe film features a similar number of complexities but ultimately the processes we enjoy most feel the most seamless. So, if digital feels easier to use, it is; and the same is true for film cameras.

Thank you for your comment, I truly appreciate it! I guess it all comes down to what aspects matter to you. I see myself more as an "experience" rather than "results" photographer who values the workflow over the final photo. Of course it's nice to have a great photo as an outcome, but the journey and experience of taking the photo somehow matters more to me than the final result. Therefore I want to have a tool that lets me enjoy this experiences as much as possible.

The manual focusing is my one real nitpick with the X100V. After using the wonderful manual focus clutch on a couple of my m43 Olympus lenses, the manual focusing on all the Fuji cameras I've used feels terrible in comparison. I couldn't imagine how good it is on a Leica lens.

Sehr schönes und ehrliches Video über die X100V :)
To be honest I also had the X100V and sold that after some time. It is really an awesome small camera, but unfortunately I got infected by the Leica Q hype and sold mine for an Q2 Mono and now ended up with the Q3 after selling the Q2 Mono. Although I'm very happy with the Q3, I really miss the size of the X100V. I think the most compact camera I currently own is the M9 with the 35mm 1.4 Voigtländer and it just can't compar - full frame just can't get to that sizes like the X100V - GRIII is of course king of compact APS-C.
Curious about the upcoming M10 video and if you have the chance, if you will notice a difference when you have the chance borrow to shoot a M11 for a period of time.

Thank you for your video. This is my first time on your channel and I appreciate you sharing your perspective. I own Sony and Fujifilm cameras and have used them for paid work but still learning. I have never used a rangefinder before and although I prefer the design over more dslr styling it kind of sounds exhausting. I have used some manual focus lenses but they are not my go to lenses. Listening to your dislikes reminds me how much I still do not know about photography.
I got into Fujifilm trying to buy the x100v and ended up with an x-e4 and the x-pro3. I quite enjoy being able to switch focal lengths so even if I would’ve been able to find an x100v at retail price, I would have to have another Fujifilm to experience different focal lengths.
Your breakup with the x100v stays true to a divorce, could be very expensive (lead you to a Leica)😊.
I have never used a Leica and I do think they are beautiful looking cameras but I guess I haven’t gotten to the point where I feel the need to trade what I have for a Leica.

I had the x100v twice and never clicked with it. It’s too over hyped. It’s mostly praised by the RUclipsrs that call themselves photographers on iPhone. Maybe that see the x100 as good as they think they are. But for true photographers that have used FF cameras, it doesn’t cut it anymore! I just sold my m9 and m10 after use them for years and years and I’m now rocking a Sony a7c (I know a lot of people’s throw out just to hear sony) but trust me, it’s really good. Like a Fujifilm’s but with ff 😂

Great feature and point of your decision. For the exact same reasons I never use my Leica V-Lux V since buying my M10. Itøs just such a grounded deliberately slower process to take pictures, and I feel present. The sofistications of the technology crammed digital cameras end up getting way to much attention, which should have been on motive and subjects. Your last point on keeping it as a snapshot camera would make sense, if it was a cheap second hand great little Lumix but not a state of the art pricy Fuji. But you found your back to yourself - and that deserves three cheers! The detours we make help us find our way, right ;-) Thx for well entertained food for thought - as always Karin. Love it!

    Thank you for this video.
I too do street photography and lust after the Fuji X100V. I’m not willing to pay a premium for a used body. I’m waiting for the X100R next year.
Interesting you frame this video in terms of love. For me, a camera is just a light capturing machine. I use Fuji, Panasonic, and Olympus bodies. Each body has its strengths and weaknesses. I select the right tool for the right job.
It sounds like you have your own ideas about what you want. That is good. You need to know what you need and want. Not all bodies or lenses are a good fit for you. It sounds like you should get hooked up with a Leica Q. The choice of the M10 was a surprise for me. After all, the X100V is a cheaper version of the Q with a 35mm FOV. Not knowing your financial situation the M10 was a surprise for me. The body is three to four times the co$t of the X machine. The lens can be even more costly. I’m not surprised you went to Leicaland for your new love. After all, you were there for film. Why not go to the dial side of Leica. You obviously appreciate the design and technology choice made by Leica. The same look and feel. The Leica look of the digital files.
Continuing your analogy, one must date several people to learn what you really want and don’t want. It sounds like you will have some good memories about the X but it isn’t the one for you. I hope you make a profit selling your X and the M is the one you will walk hand in hand into the sunset with. There is a reason why there are so many different cameras to choose from.
    Enjoy your new love.

But you are correct: The Fuji doesn’t encourage users to use manual focus. It simply might be considered to not be important anymore, where AF has become the most important marketing game to sell new cameras.

Yes, the X100V is a great camera but it pretends to be something it really isn't. And too expensive nowadays for what it does but this is a different story... The Leica M10 is indeed closer to what you will get from a film camera. Nowadays, maybe also a Nikon Zf with one of the Viltrox manual focus lenses or a micro 4/3 camera with a lens from Olympus that has the clutch for manual focus.

I'm not even a film photographer but you make some great points about the X100V. Since I shoot on digital I don't like the idea of a camera computer getting in the way of my "art". I switched to manual lenses on digital a decade ago and now that Leica M10 prices are reasonable I've switched almost all of my photography over to that system. Can't wait to hear more about your M10 experiences.

Had to give your video a watch, as I too have that Love-Hate relationship with the X100V. I've been hot and cold with Fuji's for years. I love the concept and design INTENT. But their execution of it leaves one wanting for more/different. The menus need to be stripped clean, reorganized and re-loaded. They push looks over functionality (e.g. limited contact points on the aperture ring located not where your fingers naturally fall), and i could go on and on. I hope another company launches a competitor to it.
