  • In 2023 I committed fully to black and white photography. No more colour, just monochrome. Do you want to shoot more black and white yourself? Well, then I have the perfect inspiration boost for you in this video, which will help you to commit to solely black and white for a dedicated amount of time.

    I have shot 99% black and white for the last ten years. I think if anyone is only shooting color they should really try it (for a time like you did) as it helps you to forget about color and think about composition. For me color can often distraction when I am shooting. Obviously this depends on what you are shooting and what your goal is. Karin, If you like the light house for inspiration, please see the 1968 film Kuroneko directed by Kaneto Shindo. This black and white film has been a huge inspiration to me.

    Excellent video … thanks! My Fuji X100V is always set to Acros+R and raw … so I’m shooting pretty much exclusively in monochrome although the occasional iPhone snaps are still in colour. I only recently acquired my first photo book despite the fact that I’ve been taking film and digital photos for well over fifty years … bought a new copy of Michael Kenna’s book “Photographs & Stories”. Minimalist landscape photography is my principal interest so naturally I follow aows amongst other YT B&W photographers. 📷😄

    Another practical tip I found helped me to shoot more black and white is to shoot indoors.Black and white looks very good in more contrasting lighting. compositions come out very interesting with areas of highlights and deep shadows. Somethings low contrast outdoor scenes need color to make something stand out

    I've never heard about the Moriyama's documentary. Also, I'm always puzzled when I hear from photographers that they either need a "reason", an inspiration, an incentive (wink wink Kodak C41 prices) to stoop to, sorry, commit to black and white. As if it were not both the foundation of photography and a contemporary and relevant way to express yourself. Ironically I'm doing the opposite these last months : after a decade where I was 90% B&W / 10% color, I've started to shoot more color since I'm doing more and more color darkroom printing.

    Just found your channel and I am inspired to shoot in black and white film. I was going through my gear and found an old film SLR that I had forgotten about. Put in some new batteries and it seems to work fine. Some Ilford Delta 400 is on order. Thanks for the inspiration. It’s just so easy to shoot a memory card full of images and discard most of them while film forces you to slow down and get back to the basics of exposure, depth of field and creating a story in only 24 or 36 photos.

The Olympus Pen W (half-frame film camera). The Ricoh GR-1 (35mm film camera), and the Nikon Coolpix S7000 (digital point-and-shoot). His style has remained the same for over 50 years.

    When you said you envy photographers who have found their distinctive *look*, I felt that 💯. That's probably my biggest struggle, and part of it is fed by my love of lots of different styles and genres. I've yet to want to give up everything else to specialize in one area - I'm not a specialist, I'm a generalist by definition. I like doing lots of different things and I'm frustrated that the advice of most photographers is to narrow in on one area and just do that. I get that they're probably right, and for a single project I think consistency absolutely makes sense. I just don't want to do only one thing. 😅
    Also, I love my Flexispot desk. I got it during a promotion and it was a true bargain. It's got great build quality and has my full confidence to support two computers and 3 screens. I'd not considered their chairs but I've been shopping around since my Aeron chair is showing its age and I'm ready for something new. I'll check out the FS chair.

      @KarinMajoka  4 месяца назад

      Oh my, your first paragraph speaks from my heart. This is so 100% me! I just have to much fun doing all kinds of things which makes it difficult to stay consistent with something or build a "visual style". I don't thing going in different directions at the same time is particularly a bad things and I am convinced that I am overall a "better" photographer due to the fact I experiment with different genres and subjects a lot - but it's not the "conventional" way in the arts.
      So great to hear you have been loving your FlexiSpot desk too! The chair is great and I am happy about the long overdue chair update haha. :)

    If I'm out to take pictures, I require to use a wheelchair. This actually has the advantage, that I can take a lot of gear with me. So when I'm on such a trip, I have 8 medium format cameras (1 x 4.5x6, 3 x 6x6, 1 6x9, 2 x 6x14), plus a 10x15cm and finally a 5x7" large format camera (which is actually my main camera) on me. Out of all these cameras, the 4.5x6, one of the 6x6s, and one 6x14 camera is loaded with color film, all the other are used for b&w. And yes, no 35mm film camera. I use color film only in those cases, when the color is the main reason I want to take the picture. So, approx. 90% of all my pictures are b&w.

    • @NerdyStalkerGeek
      @NerdyStalkerGeek 4 месяца назад

      Can you explain the 3 6x6s? What are the other two color stocks? Is there a reason you don’t just carry extra color and b&w rolls?

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  4 месяца назад

      Oh wow that is so interesting! I love that you turn it into an advantage, this is truly an incredible number of cameras to carry around on a day of shooting. I would probably be overwhelmed and wouldn't know which camera to choose to shoot first haha. But it sounds like you have your system figured out! :) Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it ☺️

    • @Dahrenhorst
      @Dahrenhorst 4 месяца назад

      @@NerdyStalkerGeek Well, the 6x6 all have a different role. On a strap around my neck, and sitting in my lap while I'm sitting in the wheelchair, I have a Voigtländer Brillant S (the version with the Heliar lens). This one I use for what most would call candid street photography. It's set on hyperfocal distance and loaded with b&w, and I use it if something is happening in front of my eyes worthy to take a picture of. I love its viewfinder (to me the best viewfinder of all cameras I ever had), and that it is probably the lightest and smallest 6x6 camera with a waistlevel viewfinder, and of course because of its characterful lens. The other two are two Pentacon Six TL, one with a 50mm Flektogon lens and b&w film, the other with a 120mm Biogon and color film. These I use when I want either a 6x6 color picture, or a staged portrait with the 120mm, or to use the wide angle lens. Since I can switch the lenses, I can use the color film for either purpose.

    • @Dahrenhorst
      @Dahrenhorst 4 месяца назад

      @ajoka All my cameras are dedicated to a specific purpose. Just like a mechanic has a set of different tools each for a specific purpose and knows what tool to use for what purpose without much thinking, I have my set of cameras each for a specific type of picture taking. I see what I want to take a picture of, and I know which of my cameras is probably the best to use for it without much thinking, depending on the type of film loaded, the lens fitted, and the film format.
      Actually I have a few cameras more with me, but they are all digital and not meant for "real" photography: My smartphone, an Olympus Tough (best macro camera in the World) and a Sigma SD Quattro fitted with a large telephoto zoom lens, to take pictures of birds and other animals, or things happening around me some distance away. Those I use for the mentioned purposes and for simple documentary or note-taking photography, and I actually use them quite rarely, sometimes not all for a whole week or even longer.

    Für mich passt Schwarzweiß nur zu bestimmten Motiven und deshalb könnte ich mir persönlich nicht vorstellen, wie Du ein Jahr NUR Schwarzweiß zu fotografieren. Wenn es um Formen, Licht und Schatten, Kontraste oder Strukturen geht oder wenn Farbe nur von der eigentlichen Aussage des Bildes ablenken würde, dann ist Schwarzweiß unschlagbar ( auch Portraits sehen oft in SW besser aus ) aber manchmal ist die Farbe eben auch die Essenz des Bildes. Blumen, Natur, Sonnenuntergänge, Kirschblüten ( bin halt in Japan ) oder auch die schrille Großstadt mit ihren Neonlichtern … da möchte ich Farbe nicht missen.
    Ich bin also für beiden, SW und Farbe, einfach wo es halt besser aussieht … aber nur SW wäre wohl nichts für mich. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  4 месяца назад +2

      Absolut, grundlegend stimme ich dir das vollkommen zu. Und so habe ich es vor (und nach) meinem Schwarz-Weiß-Jahr auch immer gehandhabt, zu schauen was die Situation hergibt und was passender ist. Gleichzeitig hab ich festgestellt, dass die Kreativität vor allem dann losgeht, wenn man mit bestimmten Limitationen konfrontiert ist. Und in solchen Szenarien wie z.B. in einem Blumenfeld oder beim Sonnenuntergang trotzdem monochrom zu fotografieren regt eben an nicht die "offensichtlichen" Bilder zu fotografieren sondern zu schauen wie man damit die Szene anders interpretieren kann. John Sypal (Tokyocamerastyle) zum Beispiel fotografiert in Japan auch fast ausschließlich in schwarz weiß, auch während der Kirschblütenzeit und ich finde seine Bilder wahnsinnig inspirierend und sehr fernab des Mainstream. :) Aber ich probiere niemanden zu überzeugen auch ein Jahr ohne Farbe zu machen, finde deinen Ansatz total sinnvoll und logisch ☺️
