    Film is not that expensive if you know, which one to buy. My go to film is often Fomapan 100 or 400.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад

      If you limit yourself to black and white only and rather "cheap" emulsions that is true. I love Fomapan as well, but for some things it's just not the right choice. If I shoot film I don't want to pick the film by price but rather by needs and fit. And if HP5 or Portra 400 is the right choice for the situations I want to be able to load this - but in the long term this is really expensive, so the digital camera will help me to be able to "afford" the right film for those situations.

    Karin, welcome to the hybrid shooter world! I have the blessing of growing up with film and as digital came into prominence I was lucky enough to learn that technology as well. Great content as always! The x100v is a great choice, its popularity is really deserved, and I like how Fuji made the choice to make a fun camera instead of taking part of the performance race like other manufacturers. I am pretty sure you will love the recipe system!

I have been using the Fuji for probably something like 8 months now and I use the JPEGS straight out of camera - so I do indeed enjoy the simplicity of the film simulations even though I am not as obsessed with getting more and more new recipes as some people seem to be.

    This is NOT a troll comment. I really dont get the whole Fuji thing (though I think the x100v is quite a good camera for your street shooting that and the Ricoh GR3). The things people say are so great about Fuji like the “film like” X-trans sensor over Bayer, I defy anyone to tell the difference especially if printed. Then the tactile feel of traditional switches and dials, well 95% of people I know with XT3 and 4’s they are all set on A and they use the touch screen or command dial. Finally the film emulations ok I shoot in RAW and you have access to 1000+ filmic looks. Or am I missing something

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +1

      To be honest, I cannot tell you why the Fuji camera seem to experience such a trend right now. I can only tell you why I (!) chose it, what the things are I like and what bothers me. I have a Sony for video recording and tried taking photos with that first - but it did not work out for me at all due to the lack of manual dials. I actually use my camera in manual mode 99% of the times and this is one of the major reasons why I went for the Fuji, since aperture, shutter speed and ISO are something I can set with dials rather than in the menu. I get annoyed by the autofocus and the poor manual focus capabilities of the X100V, which is why in hindsight a body with an interchangeable lens with a better manual focusing system (like a proper focus tab) might have worked even better for me. I have turned the touch screen off and use my jpegs (even though I also shoot raw as a backup, but I seldomly use them) straight out of camera. So for me the camera is not a perfect, but at least good enough fit - which simply might not be the case for your style of shooting,.

      @@KarinMajoka Totally understand that the X100V might be a good fit some will like having an optical viewfinder and have always shot with one. I might have been more tempted by the interchangeable lens X-E4 though for less money . When I am shooting “Motorräder ” everyone around me has Canons. Them with 1D-x, or R3 or R5. Me with my poor mans R6 Mkii. It’s funny certain cameras get associated with certain genres of photography with no logical reason reason. Still love your channel content a lot I actually do shoot film too Canon 50E and Sureshot A1.

    Film Fuji Karin. Film Fuji or digital Fuji. It does't really matter as long as analogue Fuji Film stays the main purpose.
    I use my Olympus Pen-F for digital. There are many color and black&white settings. Very good analogue feeling because the PEN-F is also a film camera from Olympus of the 60s and 70s. Very similar look and the kept even the name of the camera. And I can change the lenses or use my old Olympus MF-lenses of the 70s, 80s and 90s.
    Well done Karin!

    For me, digital and film are equally artistic (sorry to offend you strictly film shooters :p ). Digital is more convenient though. No need to send rolls to the lab, no need chemicals, etc. Just need camera and laptop. Well, actually most smartphones nowadays are capable of RAW editing, so perhaps laptop isn't a must. Very relevant when travelling. I used to have the X100T. Fine compact shooter. But obviously severely limited for telephoto work, so another body is needed.

    Just gotta say I really, REALLY don't care if you're shooting film or digital. Whatever works. I shot film for 20+ years and find it super amusing that the thing that film shooters back then wanted (i.e. near perfect image fidelity and control) is now driving people back to film. Anyway, like I say, shoot whatever you want. Tool is tool. The result is what matters. If you get any negative feedback about shooting digital, just know that it's the radical fringe minority. You don't need the crutch of film to make your photography worthwhile. If you like film, super cool. If you wanna shoot digital, that's fine, too.

    Please do share some of your thoughts on shooting with the Fuji! =) Shooting film on a 70s SLR is still the most enjoyable experience for me, but these days I shoot on my A7C most of the time. Totally different experience, but I just can’t afford the cost of film when I shoot the amount that I do. :(
    And thanks for showing us through Joe Greer’s book a little bit! I paused the video to read through some of the pages and got really interested. I’ve read a few reviews, but peeking inside was cool. No digital camera can give me the same experience and satisfaction I get from a film camera. I am mainly a film shooter but because of the rise of film I too purchased a didgital camera. I purchased the GR3x. Iam mostly a 35mm focal length shooter and enjoy a good 50mm so I though the 40mm would be a happy medium. I'm still not sold on just digital. I dont think I ever will be. I'm also still learning how to use my new digital camera hahah and learning how o use its strengths and how to get around its weaknesses. At the end of the day I'm documenting my life and all the the thing and experiences I enjoy. Using photography is how I can do that so I have to learn to embrace and be open to all forms of this medium to share my life with others.

    If you stop using film for 4 years you can buy a second hand M10 when for a reasonable price ;-). Prices are too high to justify. I bought colour film for around 11 euro each. That's actually a scene from my Berlin video but it looks indeed rather similar to the train station in Münster.
      Yes I did, but I don't think it's as lucrative as some people might think. 30 meters of HP5 cost 125€, which comes out to around 7€/36 exposure roll. A regular roll of HP5 costs 8,70€ (when buying 10 rolls at once). So with 18 rolls of film you save around 30€... - which is 1,5 rolls of Kodak Portra 400 with the current prices. Older bulk rolls stock for a cheaper price would be really interesting though.

    There is nothing wrong with having both types of cameras. In the end it boils down to are you a photographer or a film enthusiast. The camera is just a tool to get to an output that you like. If a film camera works for project A or digital makes no real difference to the project if the results are what you are looking for. My refrigerator and freezer have around 100 rolls of film in both color and B/W and 135 and 120 with two boxes of 4x5 sheets. I also have a digital FujiFilm GFX 50SII, Canon EOS R, a NikonZ7 and Olympus PEN F digital. More 35mm cameras than I can willingly admit too and a Hasselblad, RB67 and even a Fuji GX680. So make images and don’t worry if they are film or digital as long as they make you happy and are the result you envisioned

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +1

      I could not agree more, thank you for this elaborated comment! I still enjoy the process of shooting film waaaay more, but regarding the results I was pretty shocked how close you can get with a digital camera. So as long as you get the results you want, the medium does not really matter, I totally agree! 100 rolls of film would be gone in 1,5 years with my current shooting pace, which is why a digital camera will (hopefully) help to counterbalance that a bit.

    • @sophietucker1255
      @sophietucker1255 Год назад

      Not sure how long my film will last. I tend to go in spurts. Sometimes I shoot 10 rolls in a week and then nothing for 2 weeks. With digital there are lots of presets that can help get a more film look but the sensors and the lenses tend to make overly sharp images. I’ve discovered that using my GFX with an adapter for either my Hasselblad or RB lenses gives me a more pleasing result than using the Fuji native lenses

  • @thedarkslide
    @thedarkslide Год назад

    I think there is no point in the digital versus analog debate. One is not better than the other - they're just different. As different as one film stock can be to another, as different as B&W is to C41 is to E6. I think what gets most challenging is how to mix and match work from different media - can you successfully shoot a single body of work across different media and present the work consistently? It's not impossible, but it's it's incredible hard.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +1

      I totally agree! This is why I don't see digital and analog in competition but rather as a great addition. I think it really depends on what you understand as "consistent". I don't think that a similar visual quality is as important as thematic consistency and a red thread in the body of work. Therefore I personally wouldn't mind mixing different film stocks of even digital and analog into a project - but some people might disagree. I have uploaded a video recently where I shoot the X100V and my M6 loaded with HP5 side by side. And I was really surprised how close both are regarding their feel and visual quality.

    • @thedarkslide
      @thedarkslide Год назад

      @@KarinMajoka In my experience, it's difficult to get a consistent "look" of images when mixing different media - for example, mixing certain C41 and E6 films, you end up with images that clearly were shot on different media with a different color palette. I have a body of work shot mostly on Fuji C41 color film, with some Agfa Ct Precisa E6 within - The E6 shots stick out like a sore thumb - sometimes with their brilliance in how they highlight colors differently. I think the same problem is true for shooting different digital camera brands side by side - shooting Canon side by side with a digital Leica for example, having the shots side by side, I can clearly tell which were shot on which camera, the color science is different enough.
      And then there's mixing color and black and white - that is one polarizing topic. I haven't seen many photographers pairing color work with B&W work, it's heavily frowned upon. Karin, when you get a chance, grab any of the books Andreas Herzau published, he often mixes black&white and color in his books and it works in his sequencing - as an example.
      This whole topic might make for a great video, looking at work from different published photographers and how they handled it.

I am also fairly certain that, given enough money, Kodak will produce using the customer specific emulsion. But, I don't have hope for a few reasons. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it! I had a souse vide stick from Aldi before which I also found for a bargain. But regular souse vide sticks (not from a discounted where you have to be lucky that they have it in stock) are almost in the same price range as the Cinestill one. So for everybody who does not have an Aldi or Lidle around the corner that coincidentally sells them, I would definitely recommend going for the TCS. :)

    Great video and welcome (back) to the world of digital! Did you consider the Leica Q2 by any chance? I remember you trying it and liking it a while back or was this also a budget constraint like the M10? Is your X100V new or used? I've been on a waiting list in the US for well over a year and I'm still getting the "unavailable" updates. That's mainly why I gave in last year and purchased the Q2 instead and I have no regrets whatsoever. Love the Joe Greer book, by the way!

      The Leica Q (probably not Q2 though) was also a thought I had. However, the lack of an OVF, the 28mm (35mm is my favourite focal length) and overall size of the camera let me lean towards the X100 instead. The manual focus of the Q would have been nicer than on the X100V - but you cannot have everything. (I guess you can, it's called Leica M10/M11 haha). Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it! :)

    The Tokyo Silver Paradise book caught my eye so I may have to look out for a copy for myself :)
    I also liked the Zine you featured and it’s (potentially) ‘reusable’ presentation pouch which I thought was a great idea.

    The Fuji X is a good choice. I know a local celebrity photographer who's been using one for years and he's never complained publicly about it.
    I recently got one of those small light meters from TT Artisan and must say I'm really impressed with the build quality. It's all made from brass (I got the black paint version) and feels really sturdy. Perfect for all the cameras I have that lack an exposure meter as I don't have to carry my Sekonic handheld when going out.

    Karin, I have enjoyed watching your video, after a looooong day (and after ordering my first Fujifilm camera as well :D. I am very happy for you that you find ways to stay motivated and creative. I can't wait to see more photos from you using both analogue and the Fujifilm camera. They say "who's behind the camera" to identify a photographer, but I say that we are what we photograph. Also, I really liked the last book. It gives me a lot of info and ideas on how I would like to create something similar from my journey. Personally, it is better to create a phonebook, than print random photos. Of course, random photos are also cool to have (memories made) but if you want to tell a story, a photobook is a better way to tell it. Keep it up, Karin! Till next time :)

Gleichzeitig kann man aber auch die Öffnungslasche noch mit drüber packen, sodass es das etwas kaschiert und unauffälliger macht.

    Die Filmpreise sind inflationär gestiegen. Das verdirbt einen den Spaß an Film. Der Kodak Gold 200 3erPack von 14,99€ letztes Jahr auf 19,99€ bei Rossmann. Mit Corona kam ein Film Boom, der Nachfrage angeheizt hat. 😢

    Das "Böse" da ist es :-) beides macht Spaß also viel Vergnügen mit einer digitalen Kamera. Film muss man sich auch erstmal leisten können. Falls es sehr viele negative Kommentare gibt, könntest du in deinen Videos ja Handschuhe anziehen, bevor du digitale Kameras anfasst, vielleicht beruhigt das manche etwas ;-) Sicherlich gibt es auch passende exorzistische Rituale, braucht man halt immer Vollmond. Leica M10 oder M11? Definitiv nein, irgendwo ist auch eine Grenze. Oder nein, die ist bei den Preisen weit, weit überschritten. Marketing hin oder her. You're so right about the price of film stock and buying a digital to stretch your stock. I basically stopped shooting film because of the price rise in France and went for a XPro3 then a Xt4 when I could easily afford an m6 or mp. Digital bores me to death but the film budget is too high. I still have rolls of 135 and 120 in my fridge and keep them for a real project... One day.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +1

      Thank you for sharing your experience and your approach! Hope you will find a project that is "worthy" of beging shot on film haha. I have a lot of film in my fridge still, probably still over 300 rolls. But I shoot roughly 70-80 rolls a years at the moment which means that my film would be gone in less than 4 years (if I did not buy any new film). But since I still want to be able to shoot film in let's say 10 years, I hope I can stretch my supply a bit longer this way.

      @@KarinMajoka I think that as a creative, you would enjoy printing your art at home with a fine art printer on photo paper. That would be your next step to stretch your film stock. You could even sell prints on high end papers. If a print is 75 to 150€ that would finance some of your rolls.

    I tried Fuji but just can't get into it. I use it for some personal snapshots that are not worth doing on film, but I just do not enjoy it for anything artistic. My method to save some money is to shoot more B&W and develop it myself.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад

      I totally understand, I also miss the "proper" manual focus on my Fuji and get frustrated because of that from time to time. It's just not the same as film. Currently, I also save some money since I only shoot black and white at the moment. But even though develop most of my film myself (sometimes I send in color rolls, but I also develop a lot of color myself), it's still piles up over time, depending on how much you shoot. I shoot around 70-80 rolls a year, so it's about one X100V I could afford each year.

      It might be true, I don't know. There was a used X Pro 2 in a camera store nearby for a great price but I was sadly too slow to get it. I think the X100V was still cheaper than an X Pro with a lens and I really like the small and lightweight package of the X100.
