Love these videos! I did the Hard-Off tour of Tokyo when there last year. The stores in Akihabara were my favourites. Spent hours in the junk rooms and bought a hard to get Nikon camera lens and great pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones in the store you visited at 14:17!

I love the thrift store vids lol That "Slide printer" is an E6 slide scanner and printer in one. So any photos that you want to print from old slides you put in that and print it out as 4x6 without having to send your slides off to a photo lab and wait two weeks to get prints.

I think I've been in that army surplus store. After shopping, we walked to Asakusa. I think it took around 30 mins, a friend of mine family own a restaurant there called lisbon. They been running it for 90 years! We live in Australia, my wife is japanese
That Vivitar thing makes polaroid style photos out of old camera film negatives and slides. Seeing that Voltron stuff brought back memories of stealing my brothers vehicle and lion Voltron sets to play with :3

That artisan/ craft market is fantastic. My partner bought hand made jewellery there and I got a hand made little inari mask out of a gachapon machine. I also took one of my favourite Tokyo photos there of a stationary bike as another one pedalled by.
I love Japanese thrift shops. I live out in the Suburbs West of Tokyo but I lucked out in that there are 3 different Off-House/Hard-Off/Hobby-Off combos all within about 30 minutes walk from by house. I'm always buying old model kits, old Famicom games and retro electronics from the junk section since I can fix most of them and my wife always shops the old kimono. Just yesterday I got an old Macross model kit from the 80s, some vintage cycling shoes from the 80s to match my vintage bikes (Super rare to find a size 28.5) and my wife got like 6 old kimono and obi.
The Pika Ponchos are one of the most in demand pokemon cards. Its actually the average. There are different versions of the ponchos. Even the plushies go for alot. They also have a Mario and Luigi Crossover where Pikachu is dressed as each plumber. If i remember correctly, they came in these special sets. I love ameyoko. Its just a straight up street market. Love the food there and Shimura-San always selling his 1000 yen surprise candies. I cant wait to go back! Always thankful for sharing your adventures Norm!

The strange figures in the Seekbase Mandarake are most likely collectible vinyl sculptures/sufubi made by various artists! Think along the lines of Banksy, Kaws, etc. These can be worth a LOT of money. There are sometimes gachapon version of these as well (eg. at Big Step in Osaka you can find a row of special artist gacha). Sometimes these are based on preexisting characters (like Godzilla in new colours/designs) and some are completely original designs :) Also! Re: the Mandarake location at the end: the first floor is the buying floor which is why it gets so chaotic (& many tourists hang out there because they're confused lol, I speak from personal experience). There's a LOT of cool stuff on the other floors and I highly recommend checking the whole building out! Just note that each floor is small and can get quite crowded. I like using the stairs rather than the elevator because of that. I also found the staff were quite nice - I lost my phone on the (cough) doujinshi floor (cough) and the staff found it and kept it for me :)

Hey it's RECOfan. I always stop by there when I visit Akihabara. Went looking for the mini-CD of Moritaka Chistao's single of The Stress. I didn't see it there on the shelf and when I asked the guy at the counter, who seems to be able to speak at least a little English, if they had it at first he said no but as I was walking around their store he came up to me and said he found it. It was a good day.
After watching your channel for so long and loving this exact type of content, when I made the trip very recently I of course made it a mission to go to as many hardoffs as possible including most of the ones you went to in this video. The very first one you toured in Ueno is especially weird to see because it was the last hardoff I visited just hours before leaving and it’s so weird to see all of the things I saw in person be pictured on your channel in a format I’m so familiar with. Sitting here watching this video I’m just like “oh yea I forgot that was there!” And “ohh I really wish I got that” when I see things I saw not too long ago, just like it was yesterday, I keep having ti remind myself I actually went there! Keep up the amazing content!

I was born in 1978. When i was little, i had that parking garage toy❤😃 all my boy cousins and my little brother loved it too! We would put HUNDREDS of different matchbox and hotwheels cars in it. When my sons were small they loved it too. Made my day better. Thank you 🤗✨🖤✨
I was in the Ueno area last week and a couple days later I went to ecotown in Hachioji and the prices were a huge difference. At least 50% difference, much cheaper in Hachioji.
KitKats are the main reason I booked a trip to Japan, I have ordered hundreds of them in the mail from Japan, I'm finally going to visit next year to get them myself!! My favorite ones were the Mikan Orange, but I also really love the Cookies n Cream and the new Blueberry Cheesecake they just released in the Mt.Fuji box!

It's been a a couple of months since I watched your content, but your videos always inspire me to continue working hard on my own projects, and eventually actually going on a trip to Japan. Also those airsoft guns looked really cool. I prefer the real thing, but they would still be cool to have with my personal armory, that I lost in a boating accident, all at once. Weird how that happens. I don't know if you ever shot real guns, but if you haven't I definitely recommend that the next time that you are in the US, you should go to a range, and rent a couple. I would start with a 22. as they have basically no kick. But now I want to go thrift store shopping. I also love thrift stores. They are great.
4:05 That camera there is an old 110 camera. My mother had one back in the 80s. But hers was from a time when they didn't have a built in flash. So you had to buy these big flash bars that had 10 individual flashbulbs in them. And after you took 10 pictures with the flash, you threw it out and bought another one.
This is awesome! Prices are high indeed; but it's just neat to see the sheer volume of stuff / stores. There are a few places like that where I am, but they're not nearly as big or numerous. Plus the staff here are usually disinterested teenagers or young adults who really aren't interested in either a) quietly leaving you be until you have questions or b) being helpful and friendly. There's definitely a market for this kind of stuff - but prices have indeed gone up. Thrift / pawn shop stores here are usually more generic clothing / jewlery type stuff. It was super fun to see all the thrift stores. They are a lot different then the thrift stores in my area in the netherlands. They seem way more organized in japan and take care off

The gamecube was a Panasonic Q. There were less than 100,000 made, compared to the regular gamecube which had 21.7 million made. That considering the age, lost, broken or malfunctioning unites, that panasonic Q is pretty cool and kind of rare. I'd say that price isn't out of the realm of possibility but it definitely has a bit of Tokyo inflation. Usually they sell for about $600-800 usd.

The Vivitar Instant Slide Printer allows you to make a print of a 35mm slide to Polaroid pack film. It dates back to the 80s, and I got one back in 1988 or so. It was $75 then. Thanks for the great content!
I loved the thrift stores when I went and it felt like it went so deep. Like, Some prices seem WILDLY high in some locations, while other places seem like the most crazy bargains.
I go to that location every time I return on my yearly trips to and threw Japan, and have to agree on it's price increases in huge percentage over the years both pre and post COVID lockdowns. I go to a routine and return of over 50 hobby and hard off's in my trips to this being the only one I had to remove from my trip stop off rotation. But like always a great video to inform the public on RUclips
I love watching these thrift store videos. I love seeing things that I know what are. Like a game or toy. The Ronald McDonald puppet would be 50 to 60 years old if it were in the States. Love the gadgets and gizmos. I would love to see some other thrift stores as well. Love your channel it gives me more insight to Japan for when I come over.
I really love the variety of items at the thrift stores. I could spend hours in them. Some of the prices, though, are definitely high. I'll have to check out some the next time I go to Japan.

26:55 Yes, some of those McDonald’s Happy Meal toys are the same as in the US. I had the burger robot that is in the back left of the shot here (behind the drink cup). I had another that was like the nugget box up front, but it wasn’t that exact toy. I used to disassemble and reassemble them using my parent’s jeweler’s screwdrivers.
Those McDonald's toys at the end came out during the Transformers (and Go-Bots) craze. I had a couple different ones at the time (I was in elementary school, I don't recall which year). Like most Happy Meal toys, I got bored of them pretty fast.
@@TokyoLens Nothing you could make a video out of. I was in Japan for holiday for the first time and had 6 days in Tokyo. I just noticed that the one Bookoff near where I stayed in Asakusa was cheaper than all the others in Tokyo. No tourist goes there as there's nothing there and it's smaller. Also went to the Bookoff in Kasai near the Metro Museum and noticed prices being cheaper and selection being way different, but it's also on the smaller side. I started the trip in Kansai and ended it in Tokyo. I regretted not doing my shopping in the Kansai region. Most Tokyo thrift stores are definitely more expensive and have less / no "good deals".
Great video. Brought back good memories. I'm sure you've tried the Book Off Super Bazaars. I had a great time in the Tsunashima store last year. Bought all my family gifts in that one store....and forgot there was an upstairs, too. Doh! Next time.

Norm, the Polaroid instant slide printer was a quick way to make prints from slides using Polaroids two-part, peel back instant film. The "film" is often associated with passport photos, and was used into the early 2000s, but is no longer manufactured.

I love the thrift stores in Japan! I always go and get gifts for friends and family when I visit.

My favorites are further out from central Tokyo. I like the Hard Off Hamura and カシコシュ 青梅新町店 (kashi kashu, Shinmachi).
It's been a a couple of months since I watched your content, but your videos always inspire me to continue working hard on my own projects, and eventually actually going on a trip to Japan. Also those airsoft guns looked really cool. I prefer the real thing, but they would still be cool to have with my personal armory, that I lost in a boating accident, all at once. Weird how that happens. I don't know if you ever shot real guns, but if you haven't I definitely recommend that the next time that you are in the US, you should go to a range, and rent a couple. I would start with a 22. as they have basically no kick. But now I want to go thrift store shopping. I also love thrift stores. They are great.
4:05 That camera there is an old 110 camera. My mother had one back in the 80s. But hers was from a time when they didn't have a built in flash. So you had to buy these big flash bars that had 10 individual flashbulbs in them. And after you took 10 pictures with the flash, you threw it out and bought another one.
This is awesome! Prices are high indeed; but it's just neat to see the sheer volume of stuff / stores. There are a few places like that where I am, but they're not nearly as big or numerous. Plus the staff here are usually disinterested teenagers or young adults who really aren't interested in either a) quietly leaving you be until you have questions or b) being helpful and friendly. There's definitely a market for this kind of stuff - but prices have indeed gone up.
Thrift / pawn shop stores here are usually more generic clothing / jewlery type stuff.

That expensive GameCube was a Panasonic Q, the only GameCube released with a built in DVD player. It's definitely a collector's item! 👍

It was super fun to see all the thrift stores. They are a lot different then the thrift stores in my area in the netherlands. They seem way more organized in japan and take care off

That was a Panasonic q. A DVD player with build in game cube, super rare..

The gamecube was a Panasonic Q. There were less than 100,000 made, compared to the regular gamecube which had 21.7 million made. That considering the age, lost, broken or malfunctioning unites, that panasonic Q is pretty cool and kind of rare. I'd say that price isn't out of the realm of possibility but it definitely has a bit of Tokyo inflation. Usually they sell for about $600-800 usd.
I really need to come back to Tokyo and go thrift shopping for tokusatsu merch. Thank you for showing off these spots, Norm!

The Vivitar Instant Slide Printer allows you to make a print of a 35mm slide to Polaroid pack film. It dates back to the 80s, and I got one back in 1988 or so. It was $75 then. Thanks for the great content!

I loved the thrift stores when I went and it felt like it went so deep. Like, Some prices seem WILDLY high in some locations, while other places seem like the most crazy bargains.

I go to that location every time I return on my yearly trips to and threw Japan, and have to agree on it's price increases in huge percentage over the years both pre and post COVID lockdowns. I go to a routine and return of over 50 hobby and hard off's in my trips to this being the only one I had to remove from my trip stop off rotation. But like always a great video to inform the public on RUclips
I love watching these thrift store videos. I love seeing things that I know what are. Like a game or toy. The Ronald McDonald puppet would be 50 to 60 years old if it were in the States. Love the gadgets and gizmos. I would love to see some other thrift stores as well. Love your channel it gives me more insight to Japan for when I come over.
I really love the variety of items at the thrift stores. I could spend hours in them. Some of the prices, though, are definitely high. I'll have to check out some the next time I go to Japan.

We did basically also a drift store tour this holiday. The best one was in aizu, soooo big and cheap off house. Tokyo is really extremely expensive..
26:55 Yes, some of those McDonald’s Happy Meal toys are the same as in the US. I had the burger robot that is in the back left of the shot here (behind the drink cup). I had another that was like the nugget box up front, but it wasn’t that exact toy. I used to disassemble and reassemble them using my parent’s jeweler’s screwdrivers.

Those McDonald's toys at the end came out during the Transformers (and Go-Bots) craze. I had a couple different ones at the time (I was in elementary school, I don't recall which year). Like most Happy Meal toys, I got bored of them pretty fast.
I had that exact same red/white Harrier Jet toy when I was a kid in the US. I was not expecting that to pop up in a Japanese thrift shop!
Even within Tokyo prices vary wildly. I can recommend going to the outskirt thrift stores where you wouldn't expect any tourist ever going.

@@TokyoLens Nothing you could make a video out of. I was in Japan for holiday for the first time and had 6 days in Tokyo. I just noticed that the one Bookoff near where I stayed in Asakusa was cheaper than all the others in Tokyo. No tourist goes there as there's nothing there and it's smaller. Also went to the Bookoff in Kasai near the Metro Museum and noticed prices being cheaper and selection being way different, but it's also on the smaller side. I started the trip in Kansai and ended it in Tokyo. I regretted not doing my shopping in the Kansai region. Most Tokyo thrift stores are definitely more expensive and have less / no "good deals".

I'm sure you've tried the Book Off Super Bazaars. I had a great time in the Tsunashima store last year. Bought all my family gifts in that one store....and forgot there was an upstairs, too. Doh! Next time.
Definitely planning to go into ALL of them next year when I go over there, this is the true vacation goal of japan dont anyone try to convince me otherwise lol
Norm, the Polaroid instant slide printer was a quick way to make prints from slides using Polaroids two-part, peel back instant film. The "film" is often associated with passport photos, and was used into the early 2000s, but is no longer manufactured.

Would love to see you do a video around Pokemon Cards stores and Sports Cards stores in Japan. With Shohei Ohtani being a Japanese Superstar baseball player from Japan as well a Yoshinobu Yamamoto it would be cool to see how Japanese stores feature these two players.
