your first two tips (tight, medium, wide and sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) just completely changed the way I approach photography. I haven't gotten into shooting videos but the other tips were great too. Cheers man!
The last tip is the probably the most important one for me. Sometimes when I stress too much about getting good photos/videos from a particular location or trip I tend to actually forget the point of travelling. That's when i figured that I'll just try to enjoy the moment and let the inspiration come to me naturally. Great video mate!
I appreciate the kind words, and I totally understand. There have been quite a few times where I've focused too much on taking photos and not actually enjoying the experience. Thanks for stopping by:)
How the hell does this video not have a million views. What an amazing video, this is what real art is as it inspired me to pick up my camera and shoot today. Thank you so much. Great job.
Only carrying the gear that inspires you is the best advice ever. I used to have this problem of owning too much gear and never carrying it with me, which meant I wasn’t shooting at all. Lately, I’ve been trying to sell all the gear I don’t use. Sometimes we think we need a lot of stuff, but the truth is often the opposite-the less you carry, the better. A minimalist approach really works.
Totally agree! Sometimes less is more. I've been in this weird limbo where I want to get rid of all of the gear I don't use, and then I freak myself out and somehow convince myself that I'll need the gear😂🤦🏼♂️My goal is to make my kit smaller.
Im in the same limbo 😂I’m currently in Bali, planning a solo traveling adventure across Asia. I’m going to sell all my useless gear and traveling light with just my Lumix and drone
Ok this video is so incredibly perfect, how is this not viral! Thank you so much for the advice on creating something that feels like art and captures experiences so beautifully: 1. Wide, medium, tight 2. Sight, sound, smell, taste, touch 3. Capture clean audio 4. Use gear that inspires you to shoot 5. Capture emotion (what’s making you feel something-capture that) 6. LUTs 7. Put the camera down (if it’s getting in the way of experiencing life) [**Tip: Get the shot as fast as possible]
Your thoughts on capturing what speaks to emotions and the senses really resonated with me. I’ve often focused on taking “nice” or expected photos, but this perspective feels so much richer. It hasn’t shifted how I shoot yet, but I know it will change how I approach photography-seeking moments that evoke feeling, sound, smell, taste, or touch. Thank you for sharing this-it’s a revelation!
I'm so happy this was helpful for you! I definitely agree. Sometimes I focus too much on taking something that is "technically" a good photo but then I don't have much of an emotional connection to it.
My man, I’m saving this video. The way you put the info out is extremely helpful. I have no experience with video or photography, but I understood you context intuitively. Thank you so much! Especially for your last point, live the experience and make those memories!
THANK YOU! i gave myself a challenge this year to create at least one video each month (just general life documentation until maybe something exciting happens, who knows) and this was so inspirational!!!! subscribed immediately!!! also congrats on getting married!!!
Great pieces of advice! I’ve always known about the wide medium tight shots but relating it to senses is inspiring! Also great reminder to live in the moment and not constantly think about what you can capture in camera. If you don’t experience the place first hand then what’s the point in remembering it?
I feel like a small camera that I can just put in my pocket like the GR is good, because usually I don't wanna lug around my full frame sony camera to everyday stuff. And iPhone photos just look to generic.
Hmmm, I usually try to record each video clip for about 10 seconds so that I have enough when I'm editing. As far as when to take a photo vs a video, I'm not sure I've thought about that. I'll have to think on it a bit, but my instinct is to say it's personal preference of whether you want a photo or video.
Incredibly quality video 🔥 short and to the point, you explained story telling way more clearly and efficiently than I’ve heard anyone else say. Thank you so much I’m pumped to start implementing these tips!
One thing that I have tried is using a 360 camera. That way I can choose a wide or a medium or a tight shot after the fact. Granted, the final quality is not as good as using a regular camera with changeable or zoom lenses. But, It can get the capturing done quick and easy without having to think too much about it at the time. That way, it doesn't interrupt your life. Plus, it's kind of fun.
This video was great - you explain things so clearly and all of these tips are super helpful! I especially liked the first two tips about what type of shots to get and what to point your camera at. I realize that I'm not happy with the clips I shoot on my trips because I'm not being mindful of these things. I end up struggling to piece together a story from my footage. Definitely keeping all of these tips in mind from now on.
So glad you found it helpful! I can definitely understand that feeling of getting back from a trip and thinking "what the heck did I film." Hopefully your next trip goes a little bit better though:)
What an amazing video! You put it so nicely, why we need to film more, and your technique suggestions are simply beautiful and minimalist. For a person who JUST wants to be start filming more, what would you recommend as a budget gear? (I want to spend very minimal to see if it sticks, but hate filming with phone :)) Thank you again!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hmmm, I totally understand what you're saying about using a phone. I don't like filming on my phone much either. I might recommend looking at something like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. It's still around $600 though which is a lot of money. If it doesn't fit in your price range, I might just encouraging you to push through and try using your phone a bit more. $600 can be a lot to invest in something if you aren't sure you'll love it or not, so getting some practice in with a phone would be a nice middle ground. Thanks for watching:)
This video has got some gears turning in my head. I often find myself a little lost when I'm at a place, I have my phone or action camera ready and I don't know what to shoot or how it will come together. Using emotion and memories is a great storyboard template that I missed for so long.
It can definitely be tough to know what to film when you're in the moment! It takes practice, but I've been trying to get better at just letting my instincts guide me. You got this!
Thank you for the last tip! I normally walk around with cameras in my hand and forget to live the moment too, this is a really good reminder! The other tips are very helpful as well, thank you so much for sharing!
14 yrs old, too many hours of jobbing for: R6 Mkii + BG-R10, R-EF Adapter, EF 24-70 f/4, Sennheiser MKE 600. (Also Sigma 150-600 and an other, that's mainly for wildlife.) Making my own documantaries now, and love it! I guess actually tight, medium, wide was one of the first things I learned when starting filmmaking 😂❤
Dude! Thank you for your tips! Im just starting out with all these and your clips of the honeymoon really inspires me to actually go out and shoot stuff, again, thank you!
The first rule what we have thaught back then at the uni: wide, medium and tight 😃 Your tip about the senses awaken a new approach in me for my videos in the future. Thank you so much for this video!
Still learning about video production. around the 1:40 mark when you say check out this sequence of tight medium and wide shots, did you follow that with a sequence of wide, medium and tight shots?
Does the same rule apply if you’re using a fixed lense camera like the Osmo Pocket 3? For example, you move closer for the tight shot and medium shot? Or do you prefer a longer focal length using a different lense?
Hey! Yes. If I'm using a fixed lens camera then I just move closer for the medium and tight shots. My main camera (Canon R6) has a zoom lens on it, so it makes getting the wide and tight shots super easy. With my Ricoh and DJI though. I just walk farther away or get closer to the subject. Hope this helps:)
I am going to make a goal of doing better storytelling with my videos and information you’re sharing in this video is very helpful! Thank you and I am subscribing now for more!
Sadly I lost my Mist Filter about a year ago🤦🏼♂️😂All of the glow here was a mix of the Glow effect in Davinci Resolve and the Bloom effect on their Film Looks Creator.
As people said the three shot types is a great tip. But the best one is putting your camera away and being mindful of your new experience. Thanks for making this.
Great video! I just started my yt channel and wanted to document my life as well and add things that could help others in any way though its in my native language. Thanks for this and the ideas!

Honestly nowadays it seems like every influencer on the internet is selling LUTS😂 I've bought some from a business called Gamut, and I've been really happy with them. I'll link them below, but they can be pretty pricey. If you search for free LUTS on RUclips or Google, often times there are people that will give a few away for free. You just have to make sure you get them from someone you trust so that you don't accidentally download something that harms your computer. Been there done that🤦🏼♂️😂 Here's where I bought LUTS: gamut.io/ Thanks for watching:)
i don't know how to start documenting my life. i have a digicam, but it isn't good enough How can i know which handy cam is the cheapest and the best and where should should I begin? :(
Hey! Digicams and phones are a great way to start out with documenting your life. There are some people I know who create photos and video with their phones the looks wayyyyyy better than what I can create with a professional camera. A lot of it comes down to knowing how to best use the gear you have and focusing on the story. I'll work on creating a few videos that might be able to help. Thanks for watching!!

Great content! However i feel you are shooting yourself too tight. It makes me feel uncomfortable. Like when someone is speaking to you standing too closely. I think zoom out and show some more body language is better. Also the camera might be too high. You're looking up instead of looking straight.

I'm sure he's summarised several media uni courses in a single phrase. What a genius way to put it.
