thank you so much for this, I was watching a tutorial by someone else and had gotten lost during the process and searched it "how to rotate vertices in blender" and I found your tutorial which looked promising and I am not disappointed. Thank you so much, this was exactly what I needed to know, and your way is much better than what they had shown. You have earned yourself a new subscriber, I love how its quick, easy, and to the point
Thank you so much, I worked for many years with Softimage XSI and all this process was done in a couple of clicks. When I was learning Blender for the first time I give up because of this reason, there wasn't a way to rotate polygons/objects in specific places. But check it out! Boom, this is the way to get around the issue. I'm saving this video in my Blender tutorial's playlist. Thanks.
Thank you very much!!! so helpful! from a rhino3d user perspective this is so laborious and not intuitive at all! i love blender, but at that times i miss de "rotate3d, start of axis, end of axis"... but thank god you are here!!! =D
Great video. This had me stumped for quite some time. I tried this and in B3 it wasnt working quite right. So, I changed the Transformation Orientation to LOCAL and it worked better. Thanks again.
Thank you so much! I had everything laid out to rotate a high polygon eyelid, but I couldn't figure out how to do a custom axis. Converting my axis line (path) into a mesh, then using this method with the cursor alignment for the axis worked great.
Very nice to see that this is possible to do in Blender, thank you! Is there a shortcut key available? For example in Maya, you just press D+Click on the edge, and it will snap and re-orient the manipulator origin onto the edge.
Apart from using shift + s to snap the 3D cursor in edit mode, in object mode there is an options setting in the top right part of the 3D viewport. If you tick on the origins option in there it will let you transform the object origin/pivot directly. I hope that helps :)
You'd either need to use an armature or you could use a hook modifier and empty as the parent for the geometry you wish to rotate. Then, keyframe the rotation on the empty.
Same here wtf! In Fusion360, you literally just click an edge and then you can rotate around it. Why cant they do the same in blender.. Im never gonna be able to remember all this. Would be faster for me to import it into fusion360, rotate it and then open it up in blender again lol
Juul Beerda I pressed CTRL + 1 which is a shortcut for adding a subdivision surface modifier which creates more geometry and smoothes your mesh. You can also do CTRL + 2 or 3 to add more divisions. :)
This tutorial opens up so many new oppertunities for modeling, but I've also stumbled upon some limitations. as far as I can tell the Z-axis properly aligns itself with the direction of the edge, but the X and Y-axis take some sort of random rotation. would it be possible to have one of those axis take the direction the normal is facing to allow scaling into those axis? anyway this thanks so much for this video! I'm definitely going to use this for the future!
i just dont get why it has to be so damn complicated. im used to fusion 360 where you just click an edge and then you can rotate around it. wonder if there is an addon for this? this takes me five minutes to do in blender compared to five seconds in fusion360. Anyways, thanks for the video, finally managed to do what i wanted!
I’m not entirely sure I understand your question. Blender has a number of different ways of handling animation and rotation. You can transform things a number of different ways: local, normal, global, etc. I know that Blender also gives you a number of different methods for rotation such as various Euler options, Axis angle, and Quaternion. If these don’t suit your needs, you may be able to adapt with constraints and empty objects. I hope that helps in some way.
@@Crompwell I think, I have to learn, how to parent objects. Example: An animated spaceship with several moving parts while landing. The moving parts have to be children of the ship, right?
Interesting. I'm just starting and am trying to pose a 3d Tee Pose model. I want to flip the hand from palm down to palm up, without much luck. I'll give this a whirl. Thanks.
so can i save my rotation like this and use it while animation plane flaps for example and how can i save it ? Or do i literally have to repeat all of these again and again to animate ?
I’d need to visually see what you’re trying to accomplish, but you can hit I and keyframe your rotation. For something like rudders, you could probably align your rotation to the local or normal orientation and keep rotating like that. The newer version of blender also allows you to save custom transformation planes which makes this significantly easier.
Thank you for the useful tips...anyway what a mess to rotate something in blender when compared to any cad software...it would be great that blender developers to implement some cad like transformation features...I have been using blender for some months but I still can't feel comfortable with its way to snap, move and rotate
Hardly any tutorials on how to "Hinge" something to rotate from an edge. Now I see why. I have watched this 5 or 6 times and I still can't do it. Sooo Complicated!
I don't know if you have custom settings that may be preventing you from obtaining the same results, but I am in Blender right now and it works. Make sure you're setting all 3 settings to cursor: Both transform orientation settings and the transform pivot need to be set to cursor, you can then snap your cursor to the edge, select your faces, and rotate per the cursor.

man. exactly what i wanted to do.
Can't belive not a single tutorial on how to rotate like this
Wow - super helpful, and so clearly explained: thank you! With greetings from Cape Town.
This is such a simple thing but it's invaluable. It also works for rotating multiple separate pieces of geometry in object mode btw!
Oh my goodness, this was driving me crazy. Thank you so much.
This is the video I have been looking for! Thanks.

AyBee Yes, ideally they should be parented to the ship. You might also benefit from looking into constraints.

Is there a reason why this can't be done with a single button? Can someone write a quick script or something?

I don't know if you have custom settings that may be preventing you from obtaining the same results, but I am in Blender right now and it works.
