I love maid rite sandwiches. Growing up, I would visit my aunt in Illinois. My family always stopped by a maid rite diner. I've been eating then since the 70's . My sister loves them too and their chicken tenderloin. I still make them. Everyone makes them different. I fry the meat, add 2 beef buillion cubes. Open up hamburger bun', put on mustard on both halves, dill relish on both halves than the meat than put ketchup on top of the meat and enjoy.
The Maid rite stores where I'm from Rockford Ill had the meat in huge vats with small slits on the bottom for the grease. Because of that they were very lean compared to a regular hamburger.
I think the last place around us that sold them was in a strip mall on Riverside. They closed over a year ago. I haven't seen anyone selling them in L/P or Rockford since.
When you explain this sandwich to someone for the first time, the reaction is almost never positive. That doesn't sound very good... but when you give em one, well I don't know anyone who hasn't liked it. I don't know about this recipe - looks way too wet - but I'm glad I found it and I'll try it out.

It was based around a “loose-meat” sandwich Jackie encountered in Iowa during her time as a truck driver. I believe Jackie described it as “a sloppy Joe without the slop.” Anyway, it’s delicious! There’s a Maid-Rite sandwich shop here in Ohio that my husband and I road-trip to every year on our anniversary just to get another taste. We could easily enjoy it at home, but it’s fun to have a tradition. My instant pot recipe is very, very close to theirs and I hope you give it a try sometime. My dad and I went on his days off to go visit gramma and hevalways ordered 2 maid rites and they sure did over fill the buns. I was little so Id eat the fell out meat and gramma would give me a piece of bread and Id make my sandwich. There's nothing like a maid rite sandwich or the smell of your house when you make them. By all means get your crock pot up and look you up a crock pot recipe. You just will NEVER be sorry. The meat freezes well to for left overs. Im not a big eater but Ill get 1 and a half of these down me. To heck with fries. Give me the best part the sandwich. I like catsup mustard and bread and butter pickles on mine. Oh yum. I will crave these. It was a planned meal for the next day and I litterally had to get up in the night and make my crock pot to have 1 for breakfast I craved these so bad. They are so yummy I say eat it an any meal!!!😏😁😏😏

Taylor’s Maid Rite is The Original it ships them all over the world I don’t know if the Muscatine restaurant is open but Taylor’s Maid Rite is still making the best loose meat sandwiches not only in Iowa but the whole USA Today.
No small bites eating one of these. I can finish one in 4 bites. I like serving them on the larger round plain white buns. Oh I need some maid rites in my life and a spoon please. Im not sharing my plate crumbles. Lol.
