Haha, until you explained the potato masher, I was like, "what in the world is this woman doing!" Hahaha, that cracked me up. I never heard of using it that way before. Thanks for this. I have heard of Loose Meat sandwiches but we don't have them in Cali. I have always wanted to try one though, cause I hate sweet Sloppy Joes, and always thought a savory, less saucy option would be yummy.

Thanks for posting this, I made them and they are good😋. I grew up with Maid Rite and this is the first time I’ve been able to actually approximate their loose meat sandwich. I did everything you did I just added onion 🧅 and the reviews were great. Will definitely be making them again. 🤗

All the other recipes I seemed to find for this type of sandwich made it a little too difficult...adding beef broth or chicken broth and what not....leave it to a mom to simple things down. Thank you for your video!

It was AWESOME! I shredded fresh onion into the cooking meat. You're so right! I can't believe how yummy amd simple 💜 lol I used the mouth of a jar to mash the meat. Lol it was pretty comical. "It ain't dumb if it works!" lolol xoxo

I’m from Greenville, Ohio and our Maid-~Rites are a little different from Iowa’s version. Ours also has beer and Worcestershire sauce. We also use brown sugar. I haven’t made them in years and your video helped jog my memory! Thank you!

I have yet another version - if anyone knows where this one originated, please post. I don't even remember where I learned it. The version I learned starts out with a large cast-iron skillet with two big onions chopped and started in the skillet first. The onions get a head start because you want them to be beginning to caramelize when the beef is done. When you add the beef, chop/mash/agitate it into loose meat, and when the beef is done and the onions are beginning to caramelize, pour in a 12 oz bottle of Coca-Cola, ideally Mexican or Passover Coke because they contain real sugar, which will caramelize onto the surface of the meat as the cola evaporates. Right after you add the Coke, add salt/pepper and a tablespoon or two of either Worcestershire or vinegar barbecue sauce (NOT Sweet Baby Ray's or other hyper-sweet syrup-based concoctions). Cook, stirring, until the cola evaporates, and then melt American slices in the skillet on top of the meat. Scoop the meat and melted cheese onto a bun. Serve with a half-sour pickle and plain potato chips - I find either Shearer's or Grandma Utz to be PERFECT with this sandwich.

I went there a couple of times and they were outstanding. So outstanding that on my last visit I bought 30 of them to bring back home in a cooler. When I got home I froze them. They freeze really well. I had them for a few months until I ate them all. Unfortunately I was never able to go back so my last one was over 20 yrs ago. I need to make some. I came pretty close one time. I used beer instead of water.

Yummy! I just had my first tavern sandwich last weekend at a food truck. I tried to re-create them but the food truck ones were so much better. Oh gotta have the onion in ground beef though. My kids claim they don't like them either. I slowly wore them down. They just eat it and don't complain now.
