Hi! I just want to clear up some mistakes I made in this video, as I made a lot of them (and also I want to keep talking about this game). I've learned new things about this game from reading the comments, so thank you for leaving them!
    - Not all the mods were to "fix" things I didn't like about the game (I say "fix" very loosely, since it's personal preference and all). out of the ~30 I enabled, maybe 4 or 5 actually tweaked the gameplay in some way and the rest were cosmetics or very minor HUD additions that most people can definitely live without. I accidentally left the health bar mod on when I started this playthrough and only turned it off around an hour through, that was my mistake
    - Yeah pulling spears is definitely "cheating" lol, but the great thing about Remix is giving players the option of whether they want to have that option or not. and I chose to have it enabled. I acknowledge that it's not the "intended" way to play the game, but it does make it more fun for me, and to me, that's all that really matters ;)

    - I showed the world map for a second. my thought process was that there was so much information in such a short time that players who weren't familiar with the game wouldn't be able to process anything from that. Games without much in-game story like Rain World can be very arbitrary with what is or isn't a spoiler, so I guess in hindsight it's better to be safe than sorry.
    so, regarding that,
    SPOILERS
    -
    -
    - My script was based off my first playthrough, which happened many years ago, so the footage is just a reenactment. Like now, the overseer was also a bastard back then, and I took the same route (so skipping Five Pebbles Interior). To be honest, I had no idea until reading the comments of this video that going through The Interior then exiting through The Wall is actually the intended route, as
a.) I had no idea it existed in my first playthrough
b.) It requires 5 karma in an area that is very prone to getting killed in, so I assumed it was for people who already knew what they were doing or like pain
I would usually go up through The Wall, then leave through The Interior if I wanted to get neurons for Moon.
Many people thought I had no idea it existed based on the video, so I suppose I should've been more clear on that.
So thank you for informing me!

      @@ramblersrambling
Reading this comment definitely clarified a lot of issues I thought were present but was actually coming from a skewed perspective. I watched your video believing that the playthrough you talked about was your first blind playthrough that happened (Keyword here) recently. I didn't realize your blind playthrough already happened years ago and you're just recreating the experience. I guess you finished playing the game the first time, put it away, then came back to it but installed mods to help practice your abilities, then replayed Survivor? [The likely reason I didn't realize the playthrough happened way earlier was because I genuinely thought the "putting the game in the recycling bin for two years" part was hyperbole for the sake of humor and that 174 hours in-game is enough to gain some key knowledge about where gates/other important landmarks are but not long enough to have completely finished the game's first campaign]
The only reason I made a big issue about enabling mods as much as I did in my first comment was because you were talking a lot about how immersive the game is while having immersion breaking mods in a playthrough that I incorrectly thought was the first blind playthrough that happened recently. If I'd known you were actually already playing for a long while, I would have been a lot more mellowed out since it's always good to shake up something you've become too familiar with even if what is enabled could break the immersion for a first time player. Didn't mention this before but I see that you have the Map-options mod enabled, good. I love that mod because it's the only thing that's preventing my Safari maps from being reset when trying to play a campaign from the beginning again. Nearly learned that the hard way by almost losing TWO ENTIRE MONTHS of progress from a personal project where I mapped out EVERY region that a slugcat could explore for EVERY slugcat!
As for you acknowledging the criticism for Five Pebble's lower gates, I think the reason why a bunch of other people and I thought you had no idea the bottom gate existed was because 1) you didn't mention that you were recreating your first playthrough from years ago where you didn't knew it existed then, and 2) the bottom gate's existence was completely omitted from the script, so the possibility that the omission came from not knowing its existence was higher than it should be because you wouldn't talk about something you don't know exist or at all.
Despite all that, glad to see that you're still interested in the game despite the recent mixed reception of your video (hey, at least that means you got on the algorithm's good side)! It'll be interesting to see your take on either the lore of Rain World or reviewing the Downpour DLC (as well as potential theories for The Watcher if you're able to).
PS, Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together are still my recommended survival games to check out since they can also get rather difficult.

and you didnt even need to climb up the wall, theres a second entrance in the middle of underhang that leads inside, so the backflip spear throw wasnt needed

    • @tortoisewarrior4855
      @tortoisewarrior4855 4 месяца назад +27

To be fair, underhang is way way harder than the wall (even if its less RNG based with those damn white lizards), and an absolutely enormous step up in difficulty, probably the biggest in game. A lot of people would probably quit here, because of the level 5 karma gate to five pebbles and the fact that the western part of underhang kind of sucks because it is so based on parkour, so no chance of saving karma, meanwhile the eastern part feels more fair but requires going through some death swamp pit in shaded citadel that I and many other players thought led absolutely nowhere but death, and the leg, so you will also be on one karma and have to farm in an extremely hard area.
Overall I definitely see why the devs made the top of the wall accessible with tricks. Those who get really sick of the game and impatient can still finish it, at the cost of playing the game blind. Same reason why I think Unfortunate Development is not the only way around five pebbles but appears at first to be the only way. I think its pretty good game design, that was partly carried over to downpour with Vents (probably the hardest region in the entire DLC, god bless your soul if you go through all of it with the damn pearl, but is easily skippable through a shortcut).
I think the "intended" route is probably Outskirts, industrial, Garbage (there is even a small tutorial here, which is interesting because this region is easily missable going to shaded or Chimney), Shorline, Shaded, Memory, The Leg, Underhang, Five pebbles, Wall, Chimney, Sky Islands, Farm Arrays (5P tells you to go this way), Subterrean, Filtration, depths (sorry Drainage). But overall it is still an open world game still with no real intended route, the player can still go anywhere and thats fine. I don't think there is a perfect intended route, just one which the developers probably planned out for the most dedicated.

Well, actually, the red symbol that the overseer shows when seeing predators and scavengers does not mean danger, it means that the creature is a hunter just like the slugcat. You will notice that this symbol is the same symbol used for the hunter passage and also when playing as artificer, the king scav has a drone that shows the same symbol when arti shows up.
The real meaning of that symbol is "This creature can kill other creatures" which is a perfect definition of the scavs.

    • @ginsederp
      @ginsederp 2 месяца назад +1

No no, danger sounds about right. Specifically, something's out there to kill you danger. For the hunter passage, that symbol is referring to hunter being a danger to the cretures around it. While the king scav drone isn't showing the symbol to you, it is showing the danger symbol to the king scav, warning him that Artificer was there to kill him.

    • @mqbaka
      @mqbaka 2 месяца назад

@@ginsederp You just rephrased my comment. But I'll say it again though, that symbol does not mean "danger", it means "predator" or "hunter". It is the superposition of two symbols, the first one means "food" and the second means "violence/struggle/fighting" meaning that the symbol describes something that finds food by fighting (killing) i.e. a predator or a hunter.
Danger is too vague, it can be anything in rainworld, really. Predator is more accurate for the symbol, something that can/will kill other creatures (to eat).

Honestly for the HUD stuff and movement and difficulty, I find that the game works perfectly well. I noticed you had a health bar mod and to me that's far more immersion breaking than anything else, stabbing a lizard repeatedly and then stopping to check if it's still twitching always got me deep in the mindset of the little slugcat.
Pretty much every dangerous situation in the game can be dealt with or avoided if you're skilled, tactical or patient enough, and there are very few movement techs that I would consider necessary to have a good experience with the game.

I personally recommend the mod that displays whenever something dies. It's helpful for finding out if the thing you are trying to kill has died, but it's not in your face about it so you can still just look for twitching instead.
Also, finding out that a random off-screen slugpup is falling to its death at the start of the cycle will never not be funny.

the camera doesnt scroll in vanilla due to all the rooms being already pre rendered as 2d images with baked lighting. if you have a camera scroll mod not only are there visible cuts between the screens, but the perspective gets completely messed up, and if you pay any attention to details like that, it completely breaks all sense of immersion for me. the backgrounds would either have to be actually 2d isntead of 2.5d making the envoirenment much more boring and lacking perspective, or having every room be actual 3d, which would probably not only be much worse in performance, but look worse anyway.

The overseer is also one of my biggest gripes with the game; if it was a tool that was more concerned with being HELPFUL than it was with being almost exclusively mysterious and cryptic, you probably would never have had that misconception, and my first experience probably would've been very different: (SPOILERS AHEAD)

Honestly, I do not agree with your "gameplay" definition, specifically this point: 5:11, irked me. Now, I understand this is a tricky subject, as there is no "wrong" way to enjoy a game! But, I personally view this sequence in reverse. To me, (and to an extent, the devs as well) Rain World is not about killing everything you see, lowering health bars, and defeating enemies, well, because this game does not have enemies. There is only you, the environment, and the other creatures that inhabit it. This creates a triangle of sorts, each element is able to interact with one another, and personally my favorite part of the game is the player environment interactions. These interactions are those small moments of amazement, when the threats cease for an all too short moment, and the game simply allows you to observe. These moments are made all the more impactful in that they are torturously fleeting, scarcity creates value after all, and they often are bolstered with the amazing musical score from James Primate. Take for instance the moment you showed in the video as "boring": this is the entrance to Shaded Citadel (one of my favorite regions). You first enter the region, it is very quiet and astute players may notice that it is slightly darker than before. There is no creatures in these first two rooms, just you and your thoughts. Then, you get to this room, you see the darkened sky, the ruined bridge, the alien plant life, and then Black Moonlight kicks in. You are simply left then to observe and listen, and question where you have found yourself. This is what I think the "gameplay" of Rain World truly is.

Dispite the learning curve and various obstacles that sometimes makes you want to pull your hair out I love this game. I have currently over 200+ hours into this game and I'll be honest when playing I felt more like the character I'm playing. If i closed my eyes i could imagine the surroundings and Invision myself as a Slugcat. Fighting to survive. Using tactics to get out danger and barely scrounging up enough food to last for one cycle and quickly returning to the shelter before the rain hits.
Sure this game isn't 100% perfect and often won't be for everyone but at the end of the day this game is fun and enjoyable and some times you get some funny unexpected moments.

The static camera reminds me of games of the “cinematic-platformer” genre. Something like the first two Oddworld games. I think it can be done well. In Oddworld, you can hear enemies that are off screen so you can guess the dangers ahead. That and the screens loads in with a left/right wipe to give players time to react (enemies aren’t loaded until after the wipe but you can quickly react to the terrain). It’s been a long time since I played Rain World so I’m not sure if it has something similar to make switching screens less of a surprise.

I think if you look at the overseers not as some omnipotent tool for the player, but as an in lore animal just like you and everything else (which is how it actually is, in the lore), it makes a lot more sense how it acts.
It's not all knowing, it's not really there to help you, and it cannot see through your eyes. It's a creature that can teleport and travel faster and further than you ever could, so why expect it to know you can't make that jump? All it wants is you to help it's friend, so why would it direct you to 5P first? How would it know you can't understand moon, like it does?
It has no intention of communicating with the scavengers, and has likely seen them tear pieces from iterators regularly, so why would it see them as a friend?
All it wants is you to survive long enough to make it to moon, so it directs you to where it believes the next shelter is, even if that's wrong.
If you pay any attention, and do any exploration or experimentation (without immediately crying to the interactive map and 10 different QoL mods), you would've figured this out yourself. It's an unreliable guide because it's an animal, not a text box.

I just swam through the cum tunnel straight to garbage and then moon. I never understood how people could get stuck in drainage. I think part of it is that unless you have the air meter enabled, the game gives you very little info to go off of to deduce that pressing jump while underwater TANKS your oxygen. You know, because it's a boost you're meant to use as a desperation play to evade predators in the water (similar to boosting in pipes - doesn't make you faster overall, but can put you milliseconds ahead of a bite that would have grabbed you), but the game doesn't communicate that at all. So a lot of people, myself included at first, spam the boost thinking they need to go fast before their air runs out, and don't realize that that's precisely why they keep running out of air midway.
But yes, drainage feels very manageable if you take it at a measured pace, I agree. It's certainly no chimney canopy

@isaacnewton9021 bro there is a clear indicator of your breath running out. The slugcat glows underwater for some reason. And the light will start pulsing when youre out of breath. And the slugcat starts to move slower near the end. So that seem like a very clear indication to me on how the game works. Even when you get out of the water, the slug will be trying to catch its breath. I drowned like 10 times before i realized all of this. And its super easy to notice that you start to drown faster if you use the boost. I figured that out as soon as i went in the water for the first time.
I think i noticed all this faster then other people because i play alot of nieche games that have detailed mechanics without neccesarily telling you how they work(which i love)

Honestly the snappy camera issue is one of the most agreeable problems with the game. It kinda sucks that the maps were laid out in expectation of that and making it free-follow with a mod causes you to see seams in objects and map decor, because the game is just a lot better when you have a consistent view of what's around you.

I can definitely see why you think this. For me, ignoring the wall trick you mentioned (on my first playthrough I was getting kind of sick of the game but that went away over time) I never really looked anything up, granted I was very lucky in my direction. For me I actually really enjoyed this game, I clicked into the lore (albeit with a very controversial interpretation that the cycle was your death and rebirth) way quicker than most people did.
Another game called Outer Wilds (no major spoilers) I overall did not enjoy and found very boring past the 8 hour mark I had pretty much the same view as you did on Rain World. I found that with that game, unlike Rain World, it had a very abrupt halt to the fun of exploration once you discovered everywhere that wasn't locked behind some confusing puzzle that required constant dialogue reading, which was only half saved to your ship and heaps of nonsensical useless dialogue that made it confusing as to what actually happened, and even when you did sometimes it left you with more questions than answers in a really unsatisfying plot weapon/armor way, like with the ghost matter.
To me it really just depends on your taste. Rain World is my favorite game by a wide margin, and part of the reason is definitely interpreting the lore for yourself and then listening to other peoples views instead of being hand fed, alongside the obviously amazing creature AI and beautiful scenery. I wouldn't actually like half the changes you mentioned in this video, but thats because this was an absolute jackpot and my sort of game.

    Back when I first played, I went outskirts>industrial complex>pipeyard>filtration system .
I didn't have a source or light obviously. And since I had just started those last 2 areas were hell, especially when I was trapped between points that needed multiple sticks put in walls, to realize the game had wall jumping and spend a day to LEARN it because some vertical pipes were long as fck.
Also centipedes... hearing me and hunting me, or blocking exactly the paths where I needed to go, also dark areas (the pipeyard ones before I even reached filtration).
Somehow, after 2 days of hating my life I reached a locked gate with (-) symbols in filtration . I was never able to find a progress point. All I knew was I was too far deep in and the sole notion of going all the way back out (to pipeyard, since I had not found subterranean) was filling me with absolute dread.
That was the breaking point where I for the first time looked up doe guidance and found out I had speedran straight to the final area of the game without even the means to do what is one supposed to do there.
And that I needed to follow the overseers (which I SWEAR I WAS doing that) for the main path.
I got told about needing to go to "five pebbles" and "looks to the moon"
I didn't spoil myself enough to know If these were characters or areas. Honestly they felt like areas to me. I also read that from where I was I could go to "shoreline" and then to LOTM so I got to work.
The arduous journey took a day. Somehow I managed to find the long rooms of train wagons that led to the shoreline gate.
From there I actually did manage to eventually find LOTM. But ... since I didn't have the mark I had no way of knowing I had found LOTM. At least I didn't eat any neuron. So I just continued trying to follow the overseers. Through the following days I slowly trudged through citadel (when I first reached that I saw 5 black cannonballs piled up and I was like "this must be five pebbles!"), then the exterior. I finally reached unfortunate development , and saw "five pebbles" written on my screen. It was the first time I felt like I was reaching a goal in this game.
So yeah, through unfortunate development I finally found the ACTUAL five pebbles (it got super lost in there, took another day), got my mark, and then I basically started enjoying the game more as I was learning more of it...

Great video ! I also got to the top of the wall just to climb everything down empty handed because I did not know of the spear downthrust. That was such a disapointing moment :/
One thing I found very detrimental to the game is that you never know if you are missing informations or not. This makes reading the wiki very tempting, but getting some informations at the wrong time can ruin the game experience and the discovery. For example, how can you experiment with scavengers if you don't even know how to drop an item without throwing it ? (the game never explains this to you, what the hell ?) But then, you look at the wiki and you get spoiled of the whole trading system.
When I started rainworld, I ended up going straight to drainage system, then subterranean. I even reached the depths. That was a very hard, and frustrating experience. But that was also an incredible storry, getting stucked in the depths of hell and crawling back from it. Finally leaving subterranean and reaching shoreline was one of the most memorable moment I had in my gaming life. But then, the oversear started pointing toward a weird ass alien instead of my family, and I was completely lost. I felt like I missed very crucial things by not going to the intended route.
In the end, I decided to reset, because I ate a neuron fly of look the moon (why is the cinematic with the alien playing only when you sleep afterward ?), I was hated by all scavengers that wanted to kill me on sight, I felt that *every* creature in the world was dangerous, even the ones I should interract with (like the squids). Then I started being afraid of not going "the intended route", because I felt that this was the only way to get the informations that I was missing to properly play the game. The problem is that I was actually not missing any information, I just believed that I did, and it ruined my ability to experiment.
This decision made the game much more bland, and turned it into a linear hardcore platformer.I really hate the overseer mechanic, I really feel that the game should let explore by yourself, and make sure that you understand the basic mechanics, so that you don't have to worry of missing something important and can actually enjoy experimenting new things.

(Yeah this comment is going be very verbose, head to the bottom of you're not reading all that).
Well this channel did say it could have incorrect opinions, so maybe I'm just overthinking this and perhaps some of it was intentional but some of the information/proposed stuff here was rather iffy at best.
You had at least 174.4 hours into the game and didn't realize there was another gate in The Exterior?
The spoiler-free map implied a route with its line between 5P and the Underhang, you took a look at the real RW wiki for lizard stats, and you even shown the wiki's full map at 2:48! You might as well look at the vanilla region maps since it appears you've beaten the game already.
I don't mind the static camera but I can see why some people may not like it. It does get immersion breaking when you can't see what slugcat can. Then again, we're able to see things that the slugcat can't so I guess it's an okay trade off?
You've enabled quite a lot of mods for what are supposed to be "fixes;" but, I can see that some of those mods were needed for this video's creation so I can't be critical of all the mods installed.
What I will be critical of are the mods, What's in my pocket, Sticky Hud, and the remix option "spear pulling," which I believe are immersion breaking for the Survivor slugcat (Breath indicator is good actually, you could count the seconds but it can be a bit inconsistent feeling at first. I used it during my early hours of playthrough but turned it off once I got a hand).
"What's in my pocket" is pretty redundant honestly. Why have a Hud you have to look at on the book of the screen to see what you're holding when you could just look at the slugcat (the player yourself) to see what you're holding? You could just try to regurgitate your stomach to see what you're holding or almost swallow an object to see that you're holding nothing. Your stomach pocket incentives the player to actually memorize if something important or if at all is stored within you, just like how an intelligent slugcat would try to remember the same thing (since the gameplay implies that storing and regurgitating objects in the slugcat's stomach comes natural and that their performance isn't hindered by having an object in them, it would make sense a slugcat could forget they had something in them at all because it feels no different than nothing in the stomach pocket).
Sticky Hud makes the game ironically feel more like a game rather than a survival experience. When you're busy in a fight or waiting a while for something to clear the way being blocked, it's reasonable to assume that you might have missed something important that was nagging at you from the back of your head. Even in the game, there will always be that one unfortunate lizard that also somehow forgot the rain was coming before it's too late so at least you're not the only one who forgot to check the rain timer. Forgetting to eat because something else was happening is also possible (speaking from personal experiences both in-game and irl). Plus, bringing up the menu to see those stats only takes 1 second of pushing the space bar to see, if you had a health bar then it would be better to have it up all the time but you only take a single spear to get killed by so you don't really need to see it. Injury isn't as much of a problem: you either die in one hit or you quickly recover from being hit, no in-betweens.
Spear pulling is honestly a cop out. There is an element about it that I can't go into detail about because it seems you haven't completed Downpour yet, but the survivor slugcat doesn't strike me as a being that is strong enough to pull a spear out of a wall. I personally think it's more immersive for the player acting as if they are the Survivor slugcat if spears can't be taken out; if you know that missing your shot on a predator or messing up the placement on a spear ladder could mean the difference between life and death because you can't retrieve the spear, this incentive the player to either get it right on the first try by focusing on the right time to act or come up with back up plans in case things go wrong. Once again, that way of thinking is something an actual intelligent slugcat would do.
A codex would be immersion breaking assuming that we're meant to be slugcat remembering. Don't get me wrong, having an in-game journal isn't bad game design since there are games that benefit from that; but, said journal isn't necessary for rain world because you really only need to memorize the surface level observations to properly deal with whatever you're interacting with. Take Don't Starve Together's (DST for short) scrapbook for example. You have to interact with monsters (normal and bosses) that have different health, abilities, weaknesses, kiting patterns, spawn conditions, rarity, and loot tables while using weapons (melee and ranged) with their own abilities, attack range, penalties, and durability. That's not all, you have survivors with their own stats with some of them having exclusive abilities that you could get via either special crafting stations or skill trees. You could build structures with their own unique purpose that require certain materials or cook food with special properties where sometimes their respective material or ingredient is exclusive to certain seasons of the year, events, or states; all those previous points I mentioned too have their own unique examination quote depending on which character you're playing as, showcasing their personality as well as hinting the lore implications of how some of these characters "know" more about what's going on compared to others! The point is that there's so much information going around in DST that it would be unfair for one player to memorize all of it; that's why the developers added the scrapbook to help ease the burden of remembering all that information!
Rain world on the other hand is way simpler: you observe an item with a distinct color and shape that's either food, something useful to use, or harmful. Then you observe the animals around you, what their body shape/size is, what color they are, and how they act; then you go around the world surviving, remembering that this animal with this particular body shape, size, and color will act like this particular way because you observed it in action before. So you respond to the situation by fighting or fleeing depending on the objects you're holding or near you.
The main point here is that DST requires the scrapbook because it goes much more in detail of specific stats that could turn the tide in survival compared to Rain World which has more simplified stats that you just need to use correctly to survive. (DST and its original game, Don't Starve, are also great survival games that are difficult so I recommend both).
You still brought up some good points about what the game didn't do as well. Iggy is way too inconsistent since I've seen a few blind playthroughs where he either doesn't do what he's supposed to do or is surprisingly competent in guiding the player in the general right direction. And I agree that the movement tech is either way too vague to find and/or a bit too difficult to pull off (I still cannot pull off a downwards spear even if my irl life depended on it).
    Still a good video overall.
TL;DR: the toxic side of me wants to shout "git gud lmfao," and leave it at that. But the normal side in me is saying that it's alright to use mods if that's your play style. I'm just (admittedly maybe too) worried that some of these mods made the game a little too easy. It's nice to take off some of the training wheels now and then to try it out.

Rain World is not a game where it hides a lot from you, in fact, it teaches you everything you need, everything else is just your lack of curiosity if you doesn't discover any of it by just walking everywhere across this game world, same goes for Outer Wilds, Rain World and Outer Wilds are my two the most favorite and best games because of this freedom and immersiveness/realism in terms of the game itself not telling you anything and you're just being thrown into this world, same as in real life.
Your words is more fitting if we'd talk about Noita, i'm telling you this as the person who played every single one of these 3 games, unlike Noita you can discover everything you need in Rain World and Outer Wilds by just goofing around

3:41 I heard some argue that this game’s camera system ties into how the world doesn’t care about you and you aren’t the center of the universe. I get where they’re coming from, but it just kind of sounds like an excuse for a flawed camera system and also sounds like reaching. True, the Slugcat isn’t the center of the world, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m the center of my own adventure, and I SHOULD see the guy threatening me with a spear just a few feet away.
    5:26 I can’t believe this guy did a +Ricoshot in Rain World.

i think the camera allows for a marginably more cinematic experience
for example the one room in five pebbles with a completely black cube in the middle this wouldnt be remotely as effective if the camera was scrolling
you could also just use the map with remix turned on and/or use your ears to hear other creatures in the room with you

    • @reformedorthodoxmunmanquara
      @reformedorthodoxmunmanquara 4 месяца назад +1

@@_antlers. Oh yeah, for sure. It’s not like, an abysmal camera system or anything, and it’s actually perfect for those more cinematic areas like the room you mentioned, but it has its flaws and like, arguing that it tied to Rain World’s themes of the world being indifferent to the player just seems VERY reachy.

Having just completed Rainworld and the last of Downpour today, I think it's an interesting take. Oddly enough while I find myself fully agreeing with the idea that Rainworld goes to excessive lengths to just avoid explaining concepts, I don't really feel like it's trying to hide anything other than (possibly) the lore of the world. The base game of Rainworld may not compromise on this point, but just about every mechanic is available from the start awaiting your discovery and consistently discovering new mechanics and options ended up being a significant boon to the experience (once the game clicked a year and a half after I finished Stage 2).
It is one of those situations where -- due to how unorthodox Rainworld's mechanics tend to be -- there's not really any prior knowledge that players can lean on in order to help bridge that gap (and in many cases, I found that my prior expectations actively hurt my initial enjoyment of the game). As a result though, it created one of the freshest and most interesting gaming experiences that I've had in the past decade.
As you mentioned, Downpour is a great way to help bridge the gap between people like myself that love the "vanilla" experience and those that might want to "fix" or "tweak" some of the issues in the game. I hope that Downpour encourages more people to try out and avoid bouncing off of Rainworld, even if I think that the base game as Survivor is the more cohesive uncompromising and memorable experience.

TBH I'm surprised the screen transition issue doesn't come up more frequently; I think they were able to design the map kind of around that so it doesn't become an issue TOO frequently, but damn when it does come up it completely kills the flow for me and all too often kills a cycle. Yes, Rain World is great. Yes, it has a ton of flaws. No, calling everyone who points out these flaws names doesn't mean the game you are autistically fixated on is perfect.
Also the last thing Rain World needs is crap in the HUD. I think minimalism works in this regard and having a bunch of shit cluttering the screen would break immersion, and immersion is the game's strongest suit. Yes, it occasionally causes confusion, but it's all stuff you can reasonably learn not even halfway through your first playthrough.
As far as people being sycophantic about this game though, I always found it funny that the game has 95% positive reviews or so and yet only ~10% have completed the basic ending of the first campaign (and just doing this much is barely scratching the surface of the game). I have over 300 hours in the game and love it (despite its flaws), and I wasn't comfortable leaving a review until I'd finished all campaigns (including the Downpour expansion campaigns). Rain world exists in that weird spot where at times it really BEGS you to use a guide or a map, but using a guide or a map would totally spoil some of the best not just this game but gaming as a whole has to offer.

Trust me its a way better cinematic experience than what ever this dude is yaping about with the "impossible back flippt spear jump if you lost your graplingworm" (its made this way because YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO GO THAT WAY)

Hey there, just watched the video and recommended it to a couple people in my community.
I have to say that it is really difficult to find anyone willing to be objective and even slightly critical of Rain World.
I am a small time content creator, mostly streamer, and my first experience with the game was atrocious. Let me tell you what happened.
I bought the game a long time ago but never got to playing it. Only played it on my stream as a First Impressions thing I sometimes do. My two hour experience with the game was incredibly negative cause, even now after 220 hours, I still believe this game has one of the worst New Player Experiences of all time.
I have uploaded my video on the game, being rather negative. I thought the controls were terrible, had no idea how anything worked and I felt like the game was unwilling to tell me anything. It was First Impressions and let's be honest the first two hours of the game are pretty bad.
To be fair, I still kinda feel like it to this day, I had to find about movement through wiki, had to install certain mods that make the game actually playable for me (have stage 3 arachnophobia, without the mod that turns off spiders I would not be able to finish the game) and where being lost in something like Shadow of the Colossus or Hollow Knight is fun, in Rain World it is mostly frustrating for no good reason.
Upon uploading of this video, it became my most disliked video my channel has ever seen. I have gotten myself mass reported by people in the Rain World community, for months I could not stream anything without someone showing up in my chat and telling me to delete myself. Eventually it calmed down but it has shown me that the worst part of Rain World is how cult-ish the community is.
To this day if I stream the game and people see I have turned off spiders they basically body me with hatred that I have not experience while playing other, generally rather toxic games like Starcraft or League of Legends.
Still, I have returned to the game about a year or so later after my First Impression stream cause I listened to the soundtrack and me having a literal dream about it. I listened to a friend who introduced me to Downpour, modding and a much nicer side of Rain World.
And here I am, streaming the game weekly, playing the game in coop online, sometimes doing silly things in arena with friends and finishing not just the game but also every Slugcat both base and Downpour and looking forward to The Watcher.
Rain World has given me some of the worst gaming experiences I have ever had in my life and it has shown me a darker side of content creation.
It has also given me some of the best gaming experiences I have ever had in my life and I have been introducing the game into the lives of many people, being a guide to them to make those first two hours a bit easier to handle.
So yeah, just wanted to share my story.
