    As an old school PC gamer, I have slowly lost almost all interest in gaming. Not only are graphics stale, but so is the gameplay and story has been almost forgotten about in the AAA world. I think the issue is the industry has learned how make AAA titles that give endless returns without putting in any work. The easiest series to pick on is Call of Duty, there has been almost no graphical or gameplay upgrades to the series for almost a decade, yet they continue to make money by releasing new skins, voices, and other bits of swag for multiplayer. These shiny digital bobbles keep teens and young adults chasing dragon just long enough for the next set of bobbles to become available. I recognize that smaller developers are doing good work, but they usually lack the influence to make a full production game that will be influential enough to change the status quo. I feel bad for kids today, they will never experience the feeling of being stunned by the obvious technical advancements between a game and its squeal. Going from the blocky characters in MGS1 to detailed character models surrounded by rich textures in MGS2 in just a few years. Seeing water look and behave like real life in the Source engine for the first time when it had been pretty much solid blue in 90s games is also something I'll never forget. It felt you were really getting something for the money. Now, not so much.

    When I play a game with highly detailed, photorealistic graphics, I don't think, "Wow! How awesome!" Instead I think, "What a waste of time. Consider the thousands of man hours spent just rendering rocks, plants, trees, etc. All that time could have been spent making more interesting assets like enemies or refining gameplay. Or it could have been spent on an entirely different game."

    No no, as someone who got stuck in the wall in my first play through I don't agree for bringing it up That's a smart skip for those who have learned not the intended path at all Is like obvious to see this when you see how much it builds up to five pebbles if you take the path through shaded citadel, the exterior and unfortunate development If you wanted a price for going all the way up the wall there's an echo there, which yes is a price considering you haven't visited five pebbles if you are climbing that, and let me tell you... IT WAS FOR SURE A REWARD for my still noob ass to get more karma it was amazing, I could afford dying more to open the gates!!! Also I personally love the lack of GUI elements all the time, no irl I can't actually tell you right on the spot how hungry I am, I actually do need to stop and really think how hungry am I really, also I love not having GUI elements as to me they detract from the world, those things are not the world so push them away, the only mod I actually agree is the camera scroll one

    The reason video game graphics stopped advancing 8 years ago is because the vast majority of the massive improvements in graphics processing power during that time have been put towards making development quicker and cheaper, rather than making graphics any better. Games that we remember as graphical standouts all required extensive optimization to squeeze such impressive visuals out of limited hardware. That optimization requires a lot of time, effort and talent. Basically now devs have now decided to skip the optimization part, and just waste the massive graphical horsepower now available on running games that are somehow both ugly AND difficult to run.

    Fun video! You're right, graphics did peak in the late PS4 era. The Last of Us Part 2 still has the best characters and facial animation I've ever seen. I'm playing the first Kingdom Come Deliverance right now, and the landscape is absolutely beautiful. These games look better on modern hardware, and run at higher framerates. But newer games don't look any better. If anything, they look worse because they don't have as good of performance, and ray tracing hasn't really done much, if I'm being honest. Give me a beautiful, artistic indie game over a lot of the modern slop that comes out.

    so, funny thing about yellow worm and it's direction. it kinda breaks if you have dlc enabled, because of the additional paths and connections, yup. I played way before dlc, and it lead me through the intended path just fine (except when i said "hey, waht's here, i'll check that intended direction later") And after the dlc it tries to lead you through the shotest path, which includes some backtracking (he wants you to go in sheded through garbage wastes now, instead of shoreline, because in this case you'll be almost in the memory crypts)

    TBH I'm surprised the screen transition issue doesn't come up more frequently; I think they were able to design the map kind of around that so it doesn't become an issue TOO frequently, but damn when it does come up it completely kills the flow for me and all too often kills a cycle. Yes, Rain World is great. Yes, it has a ton of flaws. No, calling everyone who points out these flaws names doesn't mean the game you are autistically fixated on is perfect. Also the last thing Rain World needs is crap in the HUD. I think minimalism works in this regard and having a bunch of shit cluttering the screen would break immersion, and immersion is the game's strongest suit. Yes, it occasionally causes confusion, but it's all stuff you can reasonably learn not even halfway through your first playthrough. As far as people being sycophantic about this game though, I always found it funny that the game has 95% positive reviews or so and yet only ~10% have completed the basic ending of the first campaign (and just doing this much is barely scratching the surface of the game). I have over 300 hours in the game and love it (despite its flaws), and I wasn't comfortable leaving a review until I'd finished all campaigns (including the Downpour expansion campaigns). Rain world exists in that weird spot where at times it really BEGS you to use a guide or a map, but using a guide or a map would totally spoil some of the best not just this game but gaming as a whole has to offer.

    I played Wolfenstein: The New Order when it came out in 2014. Loved it. I just started another play through. I am amazed at how good it looks. I mean, It's got some lower res textures you'll notice if you try, but just playing it I don't notice it at all. The gameplay, animations, lighting and atmosphere are just that good. I want more games like those old linear FPS. I'm sick of gathering and crafting in every freaking game. Filler trash! Just to make it longer.

    They don't make games like Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Deus Ex, Bioshock or Disco Elysium anymore. A few fraction of games have Identity and High writing. Compared to a much larger chunk back in 2000s.

    We don't need more polygons, we need better story and gameplay. I'm tired of seeing the same shooting game but with 4k guns that doesn't show any difference to 1080p, it only eats up storage.

    There's a couple more reasons for the stagnation of graphics: * The push for raytracing and AI by hardware manufacturers leading to increased GPU manufacturing costs rather than focusing on more GPU memory and raster processing power. * The push for 1 click solutions for things like lodding and global illumination by engine developers to save game production costs and time instead of implementing proper optimization techniques. Both of these dramatically increased the processing costs per frame leading to overrealiance on AI upscaling and frame generation to achieve playable frames. This sacrificed image clarity and ended up delivering a smeary, blurry and laggy mess that current state of video game graphics is. This is explained really well by Threat Interactive if you wanted to look it up further.

    Back when I first played, I went outskirts>industrial complex>pipeyard>filtration system . I didn't have a source or light obviously. And since I had just started those last 2 areas were hell, especially when I was trapped between points that needed multiple sticks put in walls, to realize the game had wall jumping and spend a day to LEARN it because some vertical pipes were long as fck. Also centipedes... hearing me and hunting me, or blocking exactly the paths where I needed to go, also dark areas (the pipeyard ones before I even reached filtration). Somehow, after 2 days of hating my life I reached a locked gate with (-) symbols in filtration . I was never able to find a progress point. All I knew was I was too far deep in and the sole notion of going all the way back out (to pipeyard, since I had not found subterranean) was filling me with absolute dread. That was the breaking point where I for the first time looked up doe guidance and found out I had speedran straight to the final area of the game without even the means to do what is one supposed to do there. And that I needed to follow the overseers (which I SWEAR I WAS doing that) for the main path. I got told about needing to go to "five pebbles" and "looks to the moon" I didn't spoil myself enough to know If these were characters or areas. Honestly they felt like areas to me. I also read that from where I was I could go to "shoreline" and then to LOTM so I got to work. The arduous journey took a day. Somehow I managed to find the long rooms of train wagons that led to the shoreline gate. From there I actually did manage to eventually find LOTM. But ... since I didn't have the mark I had no way of knowing I had found LOTM. At least I didn't eat any neuron. So I just continued trying to follow the overseers. Through the following days I slowly trudged through citadel (when I first reached that I saw 5 black cannonballs piled up and I was like "this must be five pebbles!"), then the exterior. I finally reached unfortunate development , and saw "five pebbles" written on my screen. It was the first time I felt like I was reaching a goal in this game. So yeah, through unfortunate development I finally found the ACTUAL five pebbles (it got super lost in there, took another day), got my mark, and then I basically started enjoying the game more as I was learning more of it...

    Man I remember when hi-fi rush was a new thing because it was fresh and worked and runned well (idk if it did but I never heard it struggled on a 40 series card) then they shut the mf's down. Style trumps detail but if both are done well with REAL! optimization that game will stand out. Think about it, if a "AAA" company just released a game with good graphics and art style along with proper optimization accompanied by a good story and gameplay which is a given not a request then that game will beat 80% of new releases

  • @gemgem-hl7ii
    @gemgem-hl7ii 25 дней назад

    Instead of focusing on adding more details and polygons, whose improvements are now barely noticeable, thanks to diminishing returns, I think game devs should now focus on better lighting and reflections. I know your point is more about focusing on art style, gameplay, etc., but still...
