Have graphics peaked? And does it matter?

  • With the recent talk about Hellblade 2, we thought this conversation from a few episodes ago was more relevant than ever. Personally, we feel like the graphics arms race (that constant search for the new hyperrealism) is a largely futile pursuit, and that art direction is what will really make or break a game visually, along with being the deciding factor between a temporarily impressive showpiece and a timeless classic. What do you think?

Highly agree with your takes. It feels like graphics are the only thing that get pushed and other technical aspects are lacking incredible behind now. For me its physics for example RE8 looks great but all the objects are glued to the ground and only designated boxes break appart and it just feels so weird to me. I wont say that iam not blinded by nostalgia but back when BF4 was announced it was not only looking really great it also showed new levels of destruction with collapsing streets and highrises. Sure this stuff was mostly scripted but to think that noone tried to make more out of this feature is such a letdown instead we get the most realistic pebbles and concrete walls which look fuzzier then a ps2 game thanks to TAA and upscaling.
