Bastard Sword is a podcast dedicated to a wide swath of niche gaming topics, ranging from retro favorites to modern indie classics, AAAA dumpster fires, and everything in between.
Shadow of the Colossus is still a masterpiece
What if we killed some giant hulking beasts, but felt really bad about it? Shadow of the Colossus is an absolute all-timer, one of those lightning-in-a-bottle moments that can never be replaced or replicated. Even as we approach its 20th birthday, it stands as a high watermark for spectacle, atmosphere, and just overall game design.

What happened to stealth games? | Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Intravenous 2 | Episode 22
Просмотров 9292 месяца назад
Much like making a podcast without being listened to, there's something innately satisfying about creeping through the shadows without being seen. The Last of Us Part 2 kicked us back into a stealth mode and reminded us of the simpler pleasures in life like going prone in tall grass and occasionally making people stop moving. Stealth games, it turns out, are pretty dope, but there actually just...
Ep.21 - Metaphor: ReFantazio, Silent Hill 2, Disco Elysium Followups and More!
Просмотров 293 месяца назад
So we uhh punted on Resident Evil 6 - we'll come back to it, I promise! - but we did hop on a couple huge, critically-acclaimed and fairly awesome big recent releases that we had to talk about. Josh has been diving into Metaphor: Refantazio, the new sprawling JRPG epic from the Persona devs, while Drew has been creeping ever-so-slowly through the thick fog and thicker dread of the Silent Hill 2...
Ep.20 - Resident Evil 5 (is good, actually?)
Просмотров 183 месяца назад
Spooky season continues with one of the least-beloved entries in one of the most-beloved survival horror series. Despite still being the best-selling game with the words "Resident" and "Evil" in the title, RE5 has a reputation as being not necessarily the nadir of the series, but the moment it began shamelessly trend-chasing and plummeting toward irrelevance. Despite the gleeful dive into full-...
Ep.19 - The Last Of Us: Part 2 (Is Pretty Great!)

I guess that's... the last of him 😎. This week, we tackle one of the more controversial major sequels in recent memory, The Last of Us: Part 2. Almost a half a decade (and a remaster) later, the internet is still very.... uhhh, divided on the story of this game. We spend some time talking about the choices it makes, how well they work for us, the upcoming season 2 of the HBO show, and the damn-...
Ep.18 - Disco Elysium (is one of the best games ever)

"You are a violent and irrepressible miracle. The vacuum of cosmos and the stars burning in it are afraid of you. Given enough time you would wipe us all out and replace us with nothing just by accident." Disco Elysium is an absolutely breathtaking experience, a medium-defining accomplishment that's equal parts beautiful, ugly, hilarious, devastating, charming, hopeful, and human. It's a game t...
Ep.17 - The Age of Flops (Concord, Skull & Bones, Suicide Squad)

And we're back! Thanks for bearing with us while we got out lives together for a couple weeks - we made our grand re-entrance with a look at some of the least-anticipated games of this year or any other. There's been a unique phenomenon lately of these extremely high-profile failures; just this year we've had Suicide Squad, Skull & Bones, and Concord blow through mountains of cash and release t...
UFO 50 is awesome (bonus episode!)

UFO 50 finally released after having been in development for ages, and its one of the most low-key ambitious games I've played. It's extremely cool, as you'll hear me say no less than a dozen times in this mini-episode, and I couldn't wait to share some of my excitement about it. DUMB MGS REVIEWS: VOL 2 #metalgearsolid
Buying my first switch next week and I plan on getting Every Metroid game if possible
Fun fact You only need 60 or so insight to see the lesser Amygdalas
Yeah, it's either collect 50 insight or kill Rom in order to see them, since Rom is the one maintaining the facade.
It's debatable whether this is a good adaptation, because there's a school of thought that states that no adaptation will ever be able to capture the real eldrich horror. Because to capture it is to make it comprehendable, and by definition, that's impossible.
Miyazaki reminds me of Tarantino, none of the characters in their work never make it and in the end, it's just you.
Django...
i don't speak english but bloodborne so i like the video
Best eldritch example is : "in the mouth of madness"
Don't you mean "In the Mountains of Madness"? Or are you talking about something other than the Lovecraft story?
@elementual na the movie by john carpenter. Stars sam Neil. Made in 1994 i think.
@@chbend8220 I'll have to check that out!
Ive never been into horror before. But i played Bloodborne and screwed my head on the most delightful way. Now I'm working on Ludwig on BL4 and it really cranks up the terror. 🎉
Rom the vacuous spider was the part of the game that made me realize that this was about more than just Gothic horror monsters. When you're standing out in the middle of that weird white world, you feel like you're in a completely different dimension....
It's really really good bro
The best part? You can hunt them!
Maybe we'll get a look at the Horus Rebellion.
I dont see "amazing detail" at all in this game. I've seen much much older games with better details
“And one-hits you” I’m pretty sure that’s the entire game.
Level vitality
I was so rocked by this take.
I'm abit of a wet blanket about the blue point remake, I reckon they took too many liberties with certain details of the dark energy design. And some of the environments are too lush now for maximum graphics. Gotta say though, it played great as far as I remember and I can't deny that it looks amazing, inspite of what I said
Totally fair take. I did end up playing a big chunk of the remake after recording this and liked it a lot. The world feels less barren and the overall atmosphere loses a bit of that hazy dreamlike quality but the colossi are just about perfect and the boosted fidelity really sells the scale. It's a different interpretation for sure but only by a matter of degrees IMO. I do wish the PS3 remaster was available on current systems too though. -Drew
Spec? Does it need high end gaming setup?
@@Blitzinner Not sure if the dev has released specs yet. Might want to check their Steam page.
First off badass intro Secondly in the thumb nail, boy someone really messed up if they have to send those guys out lol
The god mode mechanics need to stop in these games. seeing through walls constant marking even after they have been out of sight for 5 seconds. All these type of mechanics ruin my stealth experience.
Sam Fisher was too strong of a masculine character for this current generation. Just started Death Stranding because it came to Xbox. It has some stealth aspects and I'm enjoying it so far.
easy, not spider-man mj missions
@@wongjoseph6079 Yeah, not my favorite lol.
One thing that bothers me when doing stealth in a game is the control of the character. I hate it when the prompt for silent takedowns are janky or won’t show up. I also dislike when a walk cycle puts you further than you want to go, in stealth you need to stop on a dime. Ect
What ever happened to the splinter cell games i played the first and second one, and I thought those were great stealth based games. I still do the whistle when I sneak up on someone in real life.
There have been rumors of a new one for years now but nothing has happened yet. I miss them.
The option to not use stealth. If you have to do everything perfectly, then it's too stressful. Wolfenstein, sniper contracts whatever, and other games. Stealth gives bonuses, is pretty satisfying to pull off, ect. But those small sections where you get caught and have to restart completely in games? Those are the worst and feel lazy for both the creator and the player.
Agreed but one game i can say thay does this well is ghost of tsushima, it has a few forced stealth segments they arnt very long and you can fight if you get seen but you will die you can use that time to go back into stealth, i will admit it has a few instant fails but its only in story related moments and its not very often.
@@the_hat_man879 GoT's instant fail sections aren't the worst, I still don't like them but they're short and easy enough that it's not a HUGE deal.
@BastardSwordPod this completely fair, i also dont like instant fails much bit GoT is damn good
great episode! hyped to listen to your other stuff thank you youtube algorithm
Awesome! Thanks so much for checking us out, means a lot.
Man i love this game I’ve finished it like 11 times and got platinum trophy
Best exclusive game on PS4 with Ghost of Tsushima
for me GOW, Tsushima are better than BB.
Bloodborne is meant to depict the nightmarish experience of Victorian-era illness and disease and the dehumanizing nature of medical research, surgery and addiction. /Charred Thermos (An agony of effort: The true story of Bloodborne.
One aspect of it, Only The Research Hall shows that. The experimentation of the healing church and Upper Cathedral ward. Cainhurst Castle was the coolest area in the game but had nothing to do with research and surgery
And conceptualization is my favorite art and internal thought in that game
Man sylux working with the space pirates is making me hate him even more now 😡
18:20 and their next game cancelled.
Very nice vid! Bloodborne is my all-time favorite game too, might have to track those editions down at some point. Love the artwork at the beginning as well, super cool that your wife painted them! I'm lucky enough to have gotten my partner just as obsessed with this game as I am lol, we've sunk hours and hours into it together and have gotten deep into lore hunting. Truly special to be able to share this passion with one's partner 😊
Omg ur living my dream rn 😭
Short answer: YES.
Basically They got us in the first half ngl
Bloodborne is better cosmic horror than anything Lovecraft ever wrote.
well bloodborne is inspired by lovecraft after all
@@kingcrimson45 Inspired indeed, and did it better.
Waste of skin is the only choice
I want d pad beam toggling!!!!
Damn, a lot of people here who know nothing about the Prime series and never played it. Prime 4 is going to be a great Metroid Prime game (with everything that includes), and the people who don't want that can take a hike.
See the father
Just don't get changed by Sweet Baby Inc to add on a gay shit AI is enough to me
Highly agree with your takes. It feels like graphics are the only thing that get pushed and other technical aspects are lacking incredible behind now. For me its physics for example RE8 looks great but all the objects are glued to the ground and only designated boxes break appart and it just feels so weird to me. I wont say that iam not blinded by nostalgia but back when BF4 was announced it was not only looking really great it also showed new levels of destruction with collapsing streets and highrises. Sure this stuff was mostly scripted but to think that noone tried to make more out of this feature is such a letdown instead we get the most realistic pebbles and concrete walls which look fuzzier then a ps2 game thanks to TAA and upscaling.
This game needs to come to Xbox series X, but there is a rally game very similar to this that is coming to series X either this year or next year it’s called over jump rally
Sure and made by non european people mostly
What does their race have to do with this? I'm honestly confused at why that was important to point out
@@TubularBellsRequiem6531 for this 19th century european style setting
@@antonisgaratsidis8161 mmm fair. I get it now
check into Night runners if you haven’t. Midnight club style game that’s made by one dude i think, really fun
hey, atleast it still better than elden ring and its dlc
best AAA rally game is dirt rally 2.0, best indie rally games are art of rally and old school rally, which are both very different.
People wouldn't even acknoledge this game if it wasn't made by FROM. It's bad
I really liked it. I recently played it and I had a lot of fun.
Worst thing about the game is too many stats. Vitality, adaptability, and attunement are unnessesary when you already have strength, dexterity, and intelligence... also that bonfire in a room full of spiders.
I love Majula. I want to live there.
