This video as I mentioned this was meant to be a dumb april fools video which would overly exaggerated solving this nail biting mystery! It’s still kind of that but I put in a lot more time and effort than initially intended and I’m very glad I did. Making this video has really allowed me to play with a much longer format and see what I could make of a bigger project. I adore the fact that Joar likes to keep everything as mysterious and vague as possible, but the one thing he just cannot let slide is them being slimy.
Considering they're called rodents in the game, I always assumed they feel like a mouse, but wet because the entire world is always moist and damp. Unless the rain stops, which is why Saint is able to adapt and have lots of fur
In MSC pebbles calls rivulet a mouse, however lantern mice already exist in game and that's likely where he gets the name from. The texture of lantern mice are just as unclear as that of a slugcat.
i'd go with slick oily fur like an otter or seal for the normal scugs, that way you can have deviations from that in saints fluffiness and rivulets dolphin or salamander like smoothness.
My opinion is that slugcats are moist with smooth fur like aquatic mammals, and by the time of Saint that fur evolved to be thick and fluffy to withstand the cold Also Arti is dry and bristly and Rivulet is the only slimy one (which is why they are so fast, they’re slippery)
Definitely like a seal. People who've worked with seals and sea lions before say that when dry they're velvety and when wet they're incredibly smooth. Slugcats are always wet from their environment, so they're smooth! But they also have hair as a part of their integumentary system!
I think they probably feel like a manta ray or something. If you’ve never felt a manta ray, they’re smooth, wet (obviously) and a little slimy, but not like, dripping with slime or sticky slime or anything, just a little slippery.
My headcanon is that they evolved to have denser fur over time. Spearmaster only has a fine coat like a sphynx's peach fuzz that allows spears to easily slide out of their tail, while the others have more and more seal-like fur over time: a smooth coat that repels water and doesn't need frequent grooming, but not so thick that it locks in the moisture they inevitably hold (you can't tell me they AREN'T slimy to some degree based on how they move in pipes; their skin makes me think of frogs). Rivulet's coat would be more dense to retain heat and allows them to slip and slide as gracefully as an otter, and Saint obviously has a full coat of fluff.
I think Fie Pebbles Dialogue about the magenta pearl is actually him criticizing the design of the creature rather than stating its features. he says its purpose (a menial cleaning slug), then states the actual design is closer to a domestic animal (while it should be more utilitarian), further stating it's eyes would be useless for its job.

The real issue with the pipe-cleaners is that you CAN'T be the pipe-cleaning slug because that's a species that existed in what is literally "ancient times" comparatively to the time period you play in. Anywhere from hundreds to thousands to millions of years ago is when the ancients, and their pipe-slugs, were alive. I do believe the pearl could be related to slugcats, but if so, then that still doesn't mean slugcats *are* the pipe-cleaners. They would be far-off descendants of the pipe-cleaners or another ancient species after countless generations of evolution have completely reshaped them as a species. This is the same with every other creature in the game, save for iterators and their structures. Whatever form any of the creatures in rain world had when the ancients were around, they don't look like that anymore and haven't looked like that at all in a very very long time, save for *maybe* vultures and miros birds because they seem mechanical.
I always thought it was smooth, but somewhat squishy since they almost look transparent in the promo art, but have enough muscle to lodge a spear into a metal wall.

13:55 That's a misreading of the pearl. Pebbles specifically comments on the simplicity of the blueprint compared to what would be expected of newer organisms. A modern specialized creature made to live underground would be purposed without eyes, but this one is old and so does have eyes, even though there's no need for them. That's why it's closer to a domesticated animal.
Yeah I misunderstood him there, rip to my grapple worm theory haha. Someone else suggested it may be an ancestor of something in shoreline due to the pearls location which is an interesting idea!
This was a very insightful video, I will give some of my takes though! For turnarounds (the sound), I personally think thats probably just the rubble and stuff sliding under the sslugcat on the ground, as it sounds like rocks to me. Some of the sounds do sound rather sticky though! I personally think they have a somewhat damp latex-like skin, and it is supported that they are some kind of rodent due to some dialogue in game. Arti may be more dry, Rivulet is more damp, and Saint is the only fluffy one! I do also agree with the dolphin point that the Piperat Pioneer suggested! Oh also, naked mole rats are mostly hairless rodents
Ah I hadn’t considered that yeah could be rocks! As for the rodents people use the rodent connection as a reason for them having fur. Same way there are hairless cats and dogs they are an exception rather than the rule when people think of them :]
Yeah, sounded a bit to crunchy for me to think it's wet. It sounded to me like moving on a gravel path with a bit of dirt mixed in thats still damp after rainfall. Wich makes sense in the area it was recorded in, as there was dripping water.
I feel like Slugcats would feel like sea lions with some extra slime and maybe a little less fur. Maybe when it's drier (which is pretty rare) their fur would be more noticeable but normally it just seems like they're smooth slimey guys.
8:50 to me, this sounds like you'd drop a big sack of something semi-solid on the floor, I cant think of what it reminds me of rn but something like jello? the grindy noise you hear isnt what I'd call wet, its dust/small bits of dirt being ground into the floor. like dragging your feet
I remember an old conversation and multiple mentions before DP came out that saint's "fur" is actually insulating gel, that he is a slimy little guy but then downpour isnt technically canon... so saint cant really confirm that it is true for all slugs

I believe the purple Pearl is referring to the void spawn (purely cuz I think it’s cool and it fits). Also Pebble implies that the creature DOES have eyes, as he says the technology wasn’t as advanced at the time, and the creature still resembled more of a domesticated animal. He says a creature made for living in the dark has no need for eyes implying the creature DID have eyes and it having eyes was a result of technology not being advanced enough to remove them. It wasn’t intentional for it to have eyes.
@@Notlutherr I like the idea that the void spawn are ancestors to slugcats, and that’s why the slugcat ghosts in the ascension endings look similar. Also if it’s relevant, I recently looked at the broadcast dialogues and one iterator describes slugcats as “creatures that go in pipes” if that’s anything (context was, they were talking about NSH training slugcats as messengers. Also I just looked at the void spawn wiki page and apparently coalescipedes and monster kelp can eat them, and lantern mice can absorb them to become gold, which is weird imo, I thought they were ghosts :/
I'd like to mention one thing if it helps: One of the art things that were made to announce Downpour's launch had VERY thin fur-like things on the 5 downpour slugcats. Opinion: Maybe it's like that one person said, the fur adapts to the times the creatures are living in, which happens a lot of times in real life. But honestly, i think everyone can have their own headcannons, wether they are slimy, smooth, furry, or not any of that, it's all ok!
i think the slugcat would probably be atleast slightly wet if not naturally because of the ground being wet cause of the rain. oh yea and side note i think the pearl that is about slugcats may be actually about leeches or maybe compared to an iterator a leviathan cuz it doesn't make sense for a pearl about slugs to be in shoreline before moon's collapse if it fell from her city or something
i'm kinda annoyed that you didn't go into the texture comparasion to different animals more. because the comparasion to seals is very much spot-on. they basically look almost exactly like the slugcats in the official art. especiallly when they're in an wet enviroment.

I still think there is slime. Every creature in our world with similar frequent abrasions to the skin has either fur or scales. The only other precedent for that level of protection is glycoprotein production (mucus) on the skin for aquatic creatures. The “rain world” would keep the skin moist due to humidity. If we assume that the slugcat’s skin is punctured frequently with sharp edges of pipes and frames. They would not survive without something like slime.
I don’t know how to resolve Joar saying they are not slimy. Maybe it could be a mucus that doesn’t easily break from the skin. This wouldn’t feel like slime
Yeah I think part of the smooth could be adapted scales or something, they could also just have very thick skin as they don’t really need to obey our rules. From a more realistic stand point I agree they’d need some protection:]
My thought is that their texture is kinda like those slimes that feel wet but don't leave any residue or.. well, slime on you when you touch them. Smooth and damp to the touch but not sticky, soggy or slimy. Also very squimshy but not so squirmshy that you can sink your hand into their skin. They've got some consistency to them. AND NO FUR... They display no fur in cutscenes and if people only think they have fur because of the name, has no one considered that they kinda look cat-like and move like cats as well? They don't move super slow like slugs either, they just resemble a slug and a cat crossed together.
I think most slug cats are hairless, like a sphinx cat, and that without their hair they’re smooth. Like human skin. Or actually frog skin is a better comparison. Frog skin but warm. But then sometimes they can have fur (like saint) and then they are fuzzy.

I always saw them as sort of shorter haired squirrel like things, since they're so nimble, with the tail being mostly fat rather than fur kinda like some lizards.
Riv is a slippery little guy, saint is floof critter, the rest of them are probably like otters? whatever it is, I imagine them being weirdly squishy. Not like a water balloon, but also not like they're just chubby (except gourmand obviously)- some weird, unnatural squishiness.
I think they are kinda dry but a bit moist, but can produce slime rapidly to slide and traverse pipes and stuff like that. Thats why the feets sound dry
I always assumed they were slimy since a small coat of slime would protect them from small bumps and sharp angles deep inside the pipes. The slime could also be made to be like a cleaning substance to help keep pipes clean.
Now i might be biased in saying this cause seals are my everything but i do think slugcats have like seal fur. Cause when you look at elephant seals you get the impression theyre all bald right, but they actually have short but thick fur that sticks to them when wet and i think that corresponds to the texture slugcats have in like cutscenes and stuff (they look smooth there) so i think slugcats have that niche of having thick skin and thick fat to protect them. Also slugcats are 100% equivalent to polecats, ill die on this hill any day

This one turned out exceptionally well! All the different things you took into consideration, like the sounds the surfaces make when the slugcat walks on them, to the possible real-life animal comparisons were really interesting! You put a lot more thought into this simple question than I thought anyone would. As with the last one, I also really enjoyed the interview section and the different perspectives each interviewee brought to the table, and also the clever execution of said interviews with little quips and jokes integrated into them (with one complaint being the tinnitus sound effect used in one, but that's just a problem with my sensitive hearing). It's also just cool to see all of these people I know being included in something as awesome as this video! :D But all in all, I really enjoyed every bit of this one! And with all the effort and thought you put into it, I'm definitely glad it paid off! I've always wanted to see longer videos from you, and seeing how long and entertaining this one was, I can't wait to see more!
I saw someone else say this and I totally agree with them. I imagine slugcats have smooth skin, yet they have a thin fur coating that is slightly slippery (like a seal or otter)
Pipe rats were the result of an experiment that took place shortly after the first couple of iterators were commissioned. They are a combination of the DNA of weasels and slug-like quadrupeds. They would be trained to clean pipes in reward for food, but after the ancients died out, they slowly evolved into today's slugcats.

Pebbles specifically comments on the simplicity of the blueprint compared to what would be expected of newer organisms. A modern specialized creature made to live underground would be purposed without eyes, but this one is old and so does have eyes, even though there's no need for them. That's why it's closer to a domesticated animal.

This was a very insightful video, I will give some of my takes though!
For turnarounds (the sound), I personally think thats probably just the rubble and stuff sliding under the sslugcat on the ground, as it sounds like rocks to me. Some of the sounds do sound rather sticky though! I personally think they have a somewhat damp latex-like skin, and it is supported that they are some kind of rodent due to some dialogue in game. Arti may be more dry, Rivulet is more damp, and Saint is the only fluffy one! I do also agree with the dolphin point that the Piperat Pioneer suggested!
Oh also, naked mole rats are mostly hairless rodents
Ah I hadn’t considered that yeah could be rocks! As for the rodents people use the rodent connection as a reason for them having fur. Same way there are hairless cats and dogs they are an exception rather than the rule when people think of them :]

I feel like Slugcats would feel like sea lions with some extra slime and maybe a little less fur. Maybe when it's drier (which is pretty rare) their fur would be more noticeable but normally it just seems like they're smooth slimey guys.

yknow how belugas have that squishy spot on the top of their head? less tension, more density, and that's a slugcat.
I believe the purple Pearl is referring to the void spawn (purely cuz I think it’s cool and it fits). Also Pebble implies that the creature DOES have eyes, as he says the technology wasn’t as advanced at the time, and the creature still resembled more of a domesticated animal. He says a creature made for living in the dark has no need for eyes implying the creature DID have eyes and it having eyes was a result of technology not being advanced enough to remove them. It wasn’t intentional for it to have eyes.
I really want to know what void spawn are interesting to think about! and yeah I completely misunderstood what he was saying there.
@@Notlutherr I like the idea that the void spawn are ancestors to slugcats, and that’s why the slugcat ghosts in the ascension endings look similar. Also if it’s relevant, I recently looked at the broadcast dialogues and one iterator describes slugcats as “creatures that go in pipes” if that’s anything (context was, they were talking about NSH training slugcats as messengers.
Also I just looked at the void spawn wiki page and apparently coalescipedes and monster kelp can eat them, and lantern mice can absorb them to become gold, which is weird imo, I thought they were ghosts :/

I'd like to mention one thing if it helps:
One of the art things that were made to announce Downpour's launch had VERY thin fur-like things on the 5 downpour slugcats.
Opinion:
Maybe it's like that one person said, the fur adapts to the times the creatures are living in, which happens a lot of times in real life. But honestly, i think everyone can have their own headcannons, wether they are slimy, smooth, furry, or not any of that, it's all ok!
i think the slugcat would probably be atleast slightly wet if not naturally because of the ground being wet cause of the rain.
oh yea and side note i think the pearl that is about slugcats may be actually about leeches or maybe compared to an iterator a leviathan cuz it doesn't make sense for a pearl about slugs to be in shoreline before moon's collapse if it fell from her city or something

because the comparasion to seals is very much spot-on.
they basically look almost exactly like the slugcats in the official art. especiallly when they're in an wet enviroment.
I always assumed it was like smooth fur where if you brush it the way it goes it remains unchanged and stays smooth but brushing against its direction makes it feel more bristley

I still think there is slime. Every creature in our world with similar frequent abrasions to the skin has either fur or scales. The only other precedent for that level of protection is glycoprotein production (mucus) on the skin for aquatic creatures. The “rain world” would keep the skin moist due to humidity. If we assume that the slugcat’s skin is punctured frequently with sharp edges of pipes and frames. They would not survive without something like slime.
I don’t know how to resolve Joar saying they are not slimy. Maybe it could be a mucus that doesn’t easily break from the skin. This wouldn’t feel like slime
Yeah I think part of the smooth could be adapted scales or something, they could also just have very thick skin as they don’t really need to obey our rules. From a more realistic stand point I agree they’d need some protection:]

My thought is that their texture is kinda like those slimes that feel wet but don't leave any residue or.. well, slime on you when you touch them. Smooth and damp to the touch but not sticky, soggy or slimy. Also very squimshy but not so squirmshy that you can sink your hand into their skin. They've got some consistency to them. AND NO FUR... They display no fur in cutscenes and if people only think they have fur because of the name, has no one considered that they kinda look cat-like and move like cats as well? They don't move super slow like slugs either, they just resemble a slug and a cat crossed together.

I think most slug cats are hairless, like a sphinx cat, and that without their hair they’re smooth. Like human skin. Or actually frog skin is a better comparison. Frog skin but warm. But then sometimes they can have fur (like saint) and then they are fuzzy.

I always saw them as sort of shorter haired squirrel like things, since they're so nimble, with the tail being mostly fat rather than fur kinda like some lizards.

Riv is a slippery little guy, saint is floof critter, the rest of them are probably like otters? whatever it is, I imagine them being weirdly squishy. Not like a water balloon, but also not like they're just chubby (except gourmand obviously)- some weird, unnatural squishiness.

I think they are kinda dry but a bit moist, but can produce slime rapidly to slide and traverse pipes and stuff like that. Thats why the feets sound dry
i think they'd feel like mochi fabric plushes (squishmallows, for the most popular example) that are damp

I always assumed they were slimy since a small coat of slime would protect them from small bumps and sharp angles deep inside the pipes. The slime could also be made to be like a cleaning substance to help keep pipes clean.

Now i might be biased in saying this cause seals are my everything but i do think slugcats have like seal fur. Cause when you look at elephant seals you get the impression theyre all bald right, but they actually have short but thick fur that sticks to them when wet and i think that corresponds to the texture slugcats have in like cutscenes and stuff (they look smooth there) so i think slugcats have that niche of having thick skin and thick fat to protect them.
Also slugcats are 100% equivalent to polecats, ill die on this hill any day

All the different things you took into consideration, like the sounds the surfaces make when the slugcat walks on them, to the possible real-life animal comparisons
were really interesting! You put a lot more thought into this simple question than I thought anyone would.
As with the last one, I also really enjoyed the interview section and the different perspectives each interviewee brought
to the table, and also the clever execution of said interviews with little quips and jokes integrated into them (with one complaint being the tinnitus sound effect used
in one, but that's just a problem with my sensitive hearing). It's also just cool to see all of these people I know being included in something as awesome as this video! :D
But all in all, I really enjoyed every bit of this one! And with all the effort and thought you put into it, I'm definitely glad it paid off! I've always wanted to see longer
videos from you, and seeing how long and entertaining this one was, I can't wait to see more!
I saw someone else say this and I totally agree with them. I imagine slugcats have smooth skin, yet they have a thin fur coating that is slightly slippery (like a seal or otter)
Pipe rats were the result of an experiment that took place shortly after the first couple of iterators were commissioned. They are a combination of the DNA of weasels and slug-like quadrupeds. They would be trained to clean pipes in reward for food, but after the ancients died out, they slowly evolved into today's slugcats.
