Scavengers. They're all over the place. They're annoying, dumb, and stupid. Or are they really? In this video, I take a deeper look into the lives of these Scavengers, and share everything there is to know about these fascinating creatures.

First ever tutorial. Can't say that much about it because I'm unsure of how well I did.
Considering the fact that this is the first guide to Scavengers on YT, (Aside from Grant's Guides), I'd say I did a good job.
At the very least, I hope you enjoyed it.

    I remember a scavenger buddy i had
I was climbing towers feeling like rain was coming and i remembered where a den to hibernate was
And i get there just to see a group of scavengers running to a pipe with a vultute chasing after, and well the vulture got the one in the back, feeling bad i proceeded to stab the vulture twixe and it fell over and dropped the scavenger (i was new to vultures so i wasn't sure how much they took to die)
So there was me standing around a vulture seemingly taking a breather as the scav just stares at the vulture
T h e n the vulture came to life and quick turned on me grabbing me in like a instant, luckily we were in a spot with a ceiling so it couldn't fly off instantly and well
The scav saved me back, we then proceeded to stab the vulture a l o t, making it run off, almost immediately after it started to rain
So I went to the den to hibernate, and to my surprise the svav followed in so we hibernated together, and they started following me afterwards, a few cycles later and we found the rest of the tribe, sadly for me i lost my scav companion, but also at the same time im now glad he found his freinds (and safer then being with me)

Something I like to do when interacting with scavs is this, once you achieve The Chieftain you have basically been accepted as a scav and can act like one, biggest benefit to that is if you need spare weaponry you can just borrow there weapons and most likely they will just look shocked and won’t become aggressive, just remember to give back to the tribe every once and awhile so your aren’t seen as a leech.
Also a opportunist tip, when you see a scav kill a overseer if they don’t rush to pick up the eye just mosey on over to it and give it them, helps build trust a lot… just be careful you don’t get skewered by a scav trying to snipe a overseer.

  • @coconutmomentyeah
    @coconutmomentyeah Год назад +335

Scavengers not only communicate with body language, but respond to yours as well! Even if your not trying to convey any.
If you crouch down, keep your distance, and put your weapons down, they are much less likely to attack.
But if you have a weapon, jump around, and get really close to them, they are much more likely to attack.
This depends on reputation though. If you have a good reputation, they will respond less to aggressive body language, but if you have a bad reputation, they will respond to it more and be more likely to ignore calm body language.
That’s all I know, and I’m not sure if it helps build reputation or decreases it instead of just making them more or less likely to attack.
They are incredibly predictable once you learn how to use this body language.

    • @coconutmomentyeah
      @coconutmomentyeah Год назад +87

This is why people think of them as unpredictable and trigger happy, and why they “kill you for no reason”
They haven’t learned that they use body language yet, and have been jumping around and running at them with weapons.
The problem is trying to predict them as AI, thinking that they’re all going to act and respond the same, never change their route, and be robotic.
But rain world doesn’t just have procedural animation, it has procedural AI.
      They adapt and keep experiences.
If you killed a white scavenger last cycle, it will hate you the next cycle.
And if instead you gave that scavenger a pearl last cycle, it will be kind to you the next and maybe defend you.
The first time I played Rain world, I had no idea about any of this, but I’ve always treated NPCs and AI like people in games because I’m a wittle baby.
So I did the same in Rain World, but the difference is that it had an effect.
I had social anxiety around the scavengers, crouching down, giving them my weapons, keeping my distance, saving them from lizards and vultures and being wary of the ones with narrow eyes, even though I thought it didn’t do anything.
I ended up having a really easy time with them, actually, more than easy, beneficial.
I didn’t even know you had to pay a toll because they just let me through, and they saved me so many times.
I never actually traded with them, and only ever just gifted them things, and would fight vultures for them.
I would immediately kill myself and restart the cycle after I accidentally hit one, and cry a little after they died.
I tried hunting down the things that killed them too, dragging their bodies back to the scavengers so they can watch me teabag it.
Absolute bffs me and them. The best creatures ever in the world. I love their design and how they act and they are just so perfect.
You can imagine my surprise after I found out the rest of the fandom hated them, because they were my favorites.
They said that they were unpredictable trigger happy murderers, I thought that while they can be aggressive, that’s only when prompted, and really easy to avoid.
But after comparing my play through to others, I saw the differences before being struck with the realization that the scavengers actually responded to my weird attachment and treatment of NPCs.
It felt so weird to know that the entire time, they were the things I pretended they were.
It was like talking to a dog, while it secretly understands English.
The next few times I played, I actually felt like they were watching me and I was so paranoid.
After trying hunter though? Yeah I’m not sad when they die or scared of them anymore, and after doing more research on their AI, they are much more predictable and their friendship is more like an exchange.
I just don’t personify them as much anymore and when I have limited cycles or an objective, they feel more like obstacles, but still my favorite.

Something weird about Scavengers I've observed is that idle groups of them seem to experience periodic, rhythmic pulses of some sort.. They all twitch in sync, and sometimes bug out or boggle their eyes during this quick blink of a period. It's especially visible with Toll tribes as they're the only ones who sit still in big enough groups, long enough to see it.. I'm not really sure what to make of it. I need to observe other Scav tribe types in action to see if they do the same thing (if my memory serves, I think they do.) Perhaps it's some kind of link to each other, something psychic, if you will? Since they seem to have no other way of communicating besides gestures, but they're clearly intelligent enough to have relatively coordinated group behaviors. I dunno. What does everyone else think?

Could the Scavenger AI be modded onto vultures? That wouldn't be a nightmare at all.

Pretty good, concise video. I think the only thing missing is an examination on the way the different modes impact your experience with Scavs. The difference between Survivor and Monk kind of just comes down to increased rep gain for Monk. But Hunter starts at -30 which will make most of them try to kill you, unless you roll a particularly docile individual Scav. But the routing for Hunter is designed intelligently around this in that virtually all Scav activity in or around Farm Arrays is Toll, and the Sky Islands route leads to a lot of areas with only minimal Scav roving. So a smart player can either route around them or build rep quickly in a controlled environment. A heat map of global Scav activity would probably be more or less like a nucleus of Scavs in GW, IC, and SC and relatively little noise in the outer areas, so I think the designers understood a need for players to have the option to take a longer route around them.

You know, kinda wish I saw this earlier. You would've saved many scavenger lives...
In my defense, they started it. I first found one randomly as I was exploring. I had a cherrybomb and a spear in my hands (I was going through territory I knew to have many lizards). The scav just sat there. So did I. After a few seconds of staring contest, seeing it didn't attack me, I regurgitated a pearl I had (I didn't know they like them so much, I just hadn't yet found a use for those) been keeping for many cycles. The scav gets visually excited so I pick up the pearl instead of the cherrybomb and proceed to get closer. Out of nowhere 3-ish scavs emerge from hidden pipes and start throwing rocks and spears at me. I run away and after following me for a bit they stop with the spears above heads animation.
That interaction changed the course of my story from "the explorer" to "the scav hunter".
I'll return and see if it's not too late to make friends with them. Thank you for this awesome and informative video!
And yes, I did read everything in the nerd round. Do not underestimate me.
    Have a good day lads

Really liked this. Thank you for making it. I have 2 questions though.
    1. You said helping scavs fight enemies makes them like you more. But that's still dangerous though isn't it? You also said later on that attacking the scavs will anger them. So what happens when you accidentally kill a scav or 2 while attempting to help them? Does that still count against you?
And 2. Could you please make a video about rain world's lizards? Because I find BOTH the scavs and the lizards the most interesting and fascinating. Because scavs have a karma system. And lizards can be tamed. (Lol but you cant have the best of both worlds. Scavs hate lizards. And tamed lizards eat everything that isn't you XD)

Flooded shelters, whether they are always disabled in the campaign or due to a precycle, aren’t marked. In addition, there are plenty of "one-way vents" where they only have lights in one direction. Examples I recall the exact position of are an entrance into the Gutter in Chimney Canopy, a vent in the middle of Garbage Wastes in shallow water, and a vent in Shaded Citadel near a shelter in the bottom-most area of the map (not directly next to Memory Crypts, but much more to the West, in a room that contains a kelp)

honestly I'm not sure where their reputation for being overly agressive has come from... I'm still fairly new to the game but I've had about a dozen run-ins with scavengers, they've only tried attacking me once (one lone scavenger started pawing at the ground, I'd read that this means they want something I'm holding (I was only holding a spear) so I crouched and dropped the spear, the scavenger picked up the spear, ran away, threw it at me (there was nothing else in the room for it to aim at so I was definitely the intended target) and then left the room. thankfully I had given up on it when it had run away so the throw missed because I was jumping for some platforming)
all other times they've either been eaten almost instantly or have just milled around in a room for a bit before leaving (at which point I always loose track of them almost immediately and never manage to find them again that cycle). as a result I'd gotten an impression that they were skittish and shy, only occationally lashing out to defend each other or when they felt cornered.
