For me their best work is always directly proportional to the egregiousness of the subject matter. So the 'Fifty Shades' and 'Twilight' franchises inspired my favorite Honest Trailers.

I absolutely love this movie! however I do agree that it'd have been simpler to give the characters different names and have it be merely "inspired" by P.T.Barnum instead of claiming it was somewhat of a biography.
Eli N.S. and Snowwulf78, I kinda get what you mean, but the main character is still named P. T. Barnam in the movie, so it's going to be viewed as biographical. What Benzaiten was getting at is that if they had just renamed Hugh Jackman's character, people wouldn't be giving the movie so much flack for romanticizing the real life P. T. Barnam, who by all accounts was a sucktastic excuse for a human being.
"Zac Efron is rich and white but Zendaya is poor and usually a body double." I can't stop crying from laughter over that one, especially the body double part.
I JUST left a comment about that haha! I know, right?! I just kept going back to that part because damg, you could actually feel that voice doing things with your emotions it was amazing. I agree with you, Saarika. 100% agree.
It pretty much is. This trailer was much more accurate than the actual movie. P.T. Barnum was a terrible man. He had a partner Bailey, also a man, that they completely cut from storyline because he was worse than Barnum. Bailey tortured and dehumanizing the "freaks" so much that they couldn't make him appear like a decent character.
it is fictional, almost none of this movie it true and you can almost feel it go out of its way to paint him in a good light. P.T Barnum was not a good dude. That being said I did really enjoy the movie and watched it several times
On 'Our lady of the Circus', David Toscana mentions one kind of revenge story for the elephant. But in the end, Barnum throws the elephant out of a boat into the ocean
Someone in my screenwriting class adapted that book for her project--I read it, but can't remember much about elephants. At any rate, not the sort of John Wick/Taken, but with Elephants that I now desire! John Tusk? Trunken? Jumbo Unchained?
kevin willems The same could be said about Pocahontas, A Beautiful Mind, The Patriot, Gladiator, Shakespeare in Love, 300, etc. etc. etc. They took inspiration from real life and made fun entertainment out of it. Nothing wrong with that.
She didn’t. Check the Graham Norton interview. She didn’t dare touch the ring, but I don’t blame her tho. That’s what stunt doubles are for. They know how to that
Yup. Saw it on Christmas Day and while the musical numbers were great, I couldn't stop squirming at the inaccuracies. This movie was basically a high-class fanfic about P.T. Barnum.
I noticed a lot of people complaining that the story shouldn’t be criticized for not being historically accurate, but imo I think it should be criticized for this because if they’re going to use real life people to tell a story it should at least be accurate , and if it wanted to tell it’s own story fine, just name the characters something that isn’t tied to real life people
It doesn't have to be spot on accurate (although I find dedication to those details much more admirable) but it also shouldn't be grossly misrepresenting the truth either.
Andrew Wood Comparing Barnum to Hitler is kind of silly. Even some of the things in this video are twisted to make him look worse. For instance, when he got into politics, he was actually very outspoken and active against slavery. I'm not saying he was perfect, and I'm not even saying he was good. Neither of us probably know the answer to that question, at least not based on a musical and a comedy RUclips video.
Honest Trailer musical numbers are simply the best. Outstanding vocal talent, lyrical genius, plot relevance, catchy humour. And let's not forget the Epic Voice Guy.
I think if you watch the movie fully not expecting a true to life depiction of PT Barnum, it's an enjoyable movie (imo). They coulda changed the mc's name entirely and just had an original movie without changing much
Frankly, I didn't even know PT Barnum actually exists. It sounded familiar, but I never actually knew about him.... So for me, movie was amazing. It was thanks to Honest Trailers that I learned this was "supposed" to be historically accurate xD
i don't know nothing about this piece of american history, im from South America, so i went expecting a good musical experience and not an accurate one, and i didnt have that, it was like moulin rouge (2018) with the most generic songs.
Mauricio Plaza Well... each to its own, I guess? :) I am not a musical fan, I generally avoid them, cause I can't see them through the end (except Travolta ones lol), and I enjoyed this one a lot. So... yeah. May you enjoy many of your future movie watches then! :))
Songs = good, film = bad. The marketing department for TGS deserve all the awards - I swear it was on every social media channel everywhere I looked in the month or two running up to its release. Anyway, thanks for making this Honest Trailer properly honest and informative! PT was not a nice guy.
I saw it because I loved La La Land, but it didn't sit well with me, and I'm bored stiff of Marvel now. I was bored quite a few years ago and I still don't quite understand why people still flock to them. I like sci fi and action, but Marvel films are for the most part bland and forgettable (though exceptions exist). I'll fully concede that TGS was a refreshing change.
Semantic Samuel, it's called differing tastes. Some people, including me, actually enjoy the Marvel movies. Every movie ever made no matter how "bland and forgettable" will have people who enjoy them, people who hate them and people who are somewhere in between. Why can't we just let people enjoy what they like. PS, I fucking hate musicals.
Semantic Samuel yeah I was the same, I absolutely loved La La Land so I was hyped for this and it just didn't quite live up, I think in comparison it'd just not as cleverly written, it doesn't have the same complexity to it as la la land and the story line is all very cheesy and predictable. Saying all that, surprisingly perhaps I did like TGS a lot, but I'd comfortably choose la la land any day of the week
I would never have seen La La Land if it wasn't for my sister. I was back at my parents' house over the weekend and my sister was desperate to see it, so I went with her. Not the sort of film I'd ever have picked out to go and see myself, but I'm glad I did! I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy TGS in terms of a cinematic experience - it's a brilliantly made film. I just found the treatment of Barnum a bit unsavoury.
@@marielgracerussaneeclavea2865 almost same can be said for the hobbit trilogy. actually i would say in that case the hobbit trilogy itself is below average but the soundtrack for all 3 films were on point.
I can. Generic copy-paste pop music that doesn't move the plot forward, doesn't utilize in world characters singing abilities or any creative inspiration of the time period its "representing". It is soulless cash grab songs. Only one, maybe, two songs are directly connected lyrically. They are placed in awkward spots of the story sometimes. This is Me, should have been a big climactic song towards the end, when they finally stand up for themselves. But literally, the next scene, Barnum is ignoring her. Honestly, this was a cheap cash grab the real P.T. Barnum would've been proud of. And that isn't necessarily a good thing.
Everybody that worked for Barnum became filthy stinking rich. Including the blind old woman who he "owned." She lived longer, wealthier, and consequently probably healthier than she ever would have without Barnum. The "World's Smallest Man!"? Retired the equivalent of a multi-millionaire on amicable terms with Barnum after being in his show for many years, and even meeting his wife there. His show *was* exploitative, but no one came into it not knowing what they were signing up for, and the vast majority of them made a hundred times more money than they every possibly could have without Barnum. And if you think people with disabilities and deformities could have gotten satisfying, respectful work that made even a fraction of that kind of money... than you have a very rosy and incomplete view of this country at that time.
@Al Clayton he did many shitty things but it is historically true that freak shows changed in better the life of many. If you do a quick search on the internet you will find out that some of those people become so rich they could retire but they didn't because they enjoy the fame, and the comrade within the circus. They'd be invited to nobles parties as VIP and some even got married with high located people thanks to this connections. When cinema became a thing they would make great actors (you can still find "Freaks" somewhere) in a way not different from Andre The Giant or the guy from Game of Thrones
@Al Clayton for many of them rhis was better than being hidden and neglected by the sociaty. But back at the time life was a misery for all the poors (expecially the women) that's most of the people
@@loiracitrest example is what happened to those who worked in the freak shows after they became unpopular in the end of the 19th century. Struggle as they couldn't find gainful employment with their deformities and without the opportunities of the freak shows.
A lot of these comments seem to forget the central conceit of Honest Trailers: Its all about being nitpicky and overly-critical for the sake of comedy. That's the point. If you are taking it seriously, you are missing the point. Although this particular one is closer to a real critique than most.
Hidden Figures was just as inaccurate, as are most "based on a true story" films, when will people realize this? I thought it was a great film on its own. Yes, the soundtrack was generic pop nonsense but as a whole the movie was far more enjoyable to watch than La La Land.
As boring and soulless as the story is, I still love (most of) the soundtrack too. Not enough to save the movie itself though. Thankfully I don't need to watch it to listen to the songs.
Sir Johnny imagine if any of the songs in this movie were remotely similar to chicago! Half of Barnum’s songs would sound like Razzle Dazzle and not Oscar bait lol
If the whole point is that PT is a con man and he did all this shady shit then by inaccurately portraying his character they portrayed it quite accurately because he conned all the viewers. Well played.
Zendaya is usually a stunt double? please. she worked so hard to learn trapeze and rarely was allowed to use a stunt double. That's irrelevant to the video anyways.
True. i watched many BTS of this movie and Zendaya definitely did most of the stunts coz the director said he didn't want to use her double as much as possible.
She did use a stunt double for a few scenes, but the majority was her, i think it was really unfair how they phrased zendaya in this, because she worked extremely hard and even the director said that he wanted to use the double as little as possible
It's very common for actors to learn the talents of characters they will portray, however, they do this *own their own.* When it is time to film the scenes for the movie, assuming the Insurance Lawyers will even allow the actor to attempt it in the first place, there is often very little chance the Director will prefer the actor's _briefly practiced_ performance over the stunt-double who _does it for a living._ So while there may be "Behind the Scenes" footage of her (or any other actor in any other movie) doing stunts, that is not confirmation that the person in the finished scene will be her. And sometimes they have the actors perform "fake stunts," for the purpose of recording their face so that it can be digitally painted over the face of the stunt double.
Ojisan Kukki all im saying is Zendaya did put in work. whether or not the majority of the trapeze scenes were her, her performance in this movie was incredible and to be summarized by a sentence like "most of the stunts weren't her" bothered me. all im saying
It's the songs and the cast, at least for me. Mostly Hugh, Zac, Zendaya, and *especially* Keala. Also, I learned more about the *good* side of the historical Barnum after doing research following a viewing of this film. Still not a saint, and the movie glosses over a lot, but he wasn't *absolute* slime.
@@ingonyama70 after just what i heard from this video, I would consider him an absolute slime. No good that he has ever done could ever make up for all the horrendous things he is guilty of.

kinda the same discussion as with PT's shows, do the ends justify the means? are the lies okay if they make people happy? A realistic movie would've never brought this much joy to people
I second the above, I appreciate that you don't want to do it for all series but what you did for Game of Thrones and Walking Dead was fantastic and Westworld is another worthy series. There are only 10 eps eps so it wont take you long to get through.
@@user-es7ui5mc1m I’m not American but have heard of PT Barnum, he is very famous. Regardless my suggestion was to use the internet to look him up, lots of information available even to those of us outside of America.
Vivre Sehun same, man. And okay let's say he's indeed real and had done horrible things in his life, but this is a movie. It's a historical fiction. Not a documentary of his life. Why not critic on the movie itself instead of the person it's loosely based on? I just don't get these people.
Just curious, would you say the same if there was a historical fiction movie depicting Hitler as a war hero? If it's not true and just for entertainment does that always make it okay?
Whofan06 But who would make a movie about Hitler? There was little to no known facts of the good things that he did. Unlike P.T Barnum, who despite his horrible ways, was also known to correct those said ways and changed it, later in his life. But then again, you do have a point. They could've just invented a fictional name that's slightly based on P.T Barnum than using the name itself. This movie and especially it's soundtracks are freaking beautiful, and people shitting on it just because of this one real life person really sucks to see.
I figured he must be because I had heard of his show. I personally viewed it as fiction but thought they must have been inspired by the circus of the same name.
While I'm not denying barnum was a bad person in real life it isn't really the same thing as making a musical about the one of most objectively evil men in history and potraying him as a war hero. They did address that he had personality deficits although not as much as they really existed. plus like said above hitler didn't appear to have any postive qualities you could focus on.
Yeah she was all hooked up to safety gear. They just lacked a net. But most the stunts were her. The director wanted to use a double as little as possible. Why it’s funny I believe this I would love to know.
Nathan Freeman Why is it funny? Its true that Zendaya did some of her stunts Im pretty sure there were a couple of scenes where she needed a double But most of that Was Zendaya
What makes a character interesting is when they have nuance to them, when they are both good and bad the way humans actually are in real life. Also, the best part about this movie is showing how you can take a trait that has caused you misery and turn it into something you profit from by working hard yourself, accepting that the world is the way it is and carving a place for yourself none the less. It is a perfect message to be sent out in an age where people are coddled into emotional fragility and outrage runs amok.
You know, a historically inaccurate movie used to make PT Barnum look good and trick people into spending money is exactly the the kind of thing Barnum would do. So, in a way, this movie really does capture his spirit.

Lavenia Hewes that’s sad...but it’s funny too lol
I thought it wasn’t very historically accurate because I don’t think people just broke into song in the late 1800s
There are some people that get quite iffy when films don't accurately represent historical events they are based on (Pocahontas is a good example)
rewer True!!
Dan Johnson if you watch The New World it’s almost accurate
I absolutely love this movie!
however I do agree that it'd have been simpler to give the characters different names and have it be merely "inspired" by P.T.Barnum instead of claiming it was somewhat of a biography.
It actually does say inspired in the trailers
Eli N.S. and Snowwulf78, I kinda get what you mean, but the main character is still named P.
“Hairy Elsa” that’s so terrible but I can’t stop laughing 😂😂😂
_Jerk du Soleil?_ Why not _Moulin Scrooge?_
Benjamin Abramowitz YES 👏🏽👏🏽💯💯
Oooh, that's good!
was he really a 'scrooge' though? Perhaps Moulin Douche?
Because it's about a circus haha
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! This made my night after watching the film. That is so good, lolololololololol!!!

WeNeedLives Productions It will probably come out when incredibles 2 is in cinemas (So just hold on for 2 months :D)
I wonder if they'll touch on the creepy Objectivist undertones.
The new songs were hilarious!! Just one detail though, Zendaya DID do her own stunts
actually if you google it, it says that the directors wanted her to do AS MANY STUNTS AS POSSIBLE, meaning she did not do all of her own stunts.
i believe she did them all except the spinny one from the ceiling
Lol, ppl just wants to believe desperately.
@@amberm6991 exactly
I’ve watched several interviews and she says they’re her. 🤷♀️ Idk I’d we’ll ever really know for sure.
Damn, this one seemed a little personal haha
felt it too!
Because the whole movie was about romanticising this terrible person’s life to make him not a douche
Well P.T. Barnum was kind of a monster and he was glorified in this movie as a good guy.
Manuel Granados Vargas He was, but this vid could've still applied some chill; lol.
Movie Critic i dont know, I think their best trailers are always the very personal ones
"Zac Efron is rich and white but Zendaya is poor and usually a body double."
I can't stop crying from laughter over that one, especially the body double part.
Will C pretty sure its actually her, said it in an interview.
Zendaya actually did all her own trapeze stunts
Will C usually a body double slayed me
I nearly choked on my dinner at that one, roflmao XD
Then she's full of shit because the movie credits two body doubles.

Is anyone gonna acknowledge the amazing singing voice of the woman who sang "Never in Love"? No? Okay.
I JUST left a comment about that haha! I know, right?! I just kept going back to that part because damg, you could actually feel that voice doing things with your emotions it was amazing. I agree with you, Saarika. 100% agree.
I actually never heard of P.T. Barnum until this movie, I thought everything in this movie was fictional!
I thought the same. Then I googled his name on the way home from the cinema.
James Lawner lol same

Now I want an elephant revenge action film....
On 'Our lady of the Circus', David Toscana mentions one kind of revenge story for the elephant. But in the end, Barnum throws the elephant out of a boat into the ocean
MackerelSkyLtd Instead of Jurassic Park it would be Elephant Park...
Wasn’t there an episode of Bobs Burgers about this
Just watch or read "Water for Elephants"...Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon are lovers (lol) and there's a lot more elephant coolness
Someone in my screenwriting class adapted that book for her project--I read it, but can't remember much about elephants. At any rate, not the sort of John Wick/Taken, but with Elephants that I now desire! John Tusk? Trunken? Jumbo Unchained?
To be honest, I saw this movie through the eyes of Hugh Jackman and not the real P.T. To me Hugh was the greatest showman, not P.T.
Pradeep Gurung I agree! The film’s director never claims to be historically accurate so critics don’t have a leg to stand on.
kevin willems The same could be said about Pocahontas, A Beautiful Mind, The Patriot, Gladiator, Shakespeare in Love, 300, etc. etc. etc. They took inspiration from real life and made fun entertainment out of it. Nothing wrong with that.
So with the Amadeus example, you agree that a movie can be historically inaccurate for entertainment and writing purposes.
kevin willems they couldn’t ... selling wise
Lindsey Michelle Not very surprising. Movies always lie by calling it artistic licence.
honestly, this was one of the best Honest Trailers I've ever watched...the historical facts over the actual music just brings it home.
Loved it!! “Old School Musical” 😂👏🏼 (but 1:58 Zendaya actually did her own trapeze stunts!)
Joshua Simpson she did all of them but the star one where she was falling into zac
She didn’t. Check the Graham Norton interview. She didn’t dare touch the ring, but I don’t blame her tho. That’s what stunt doubles are for. They know how to that
I watched an interview where she said they used the stunt double as little as possible and she had to learn a lot of trapeze-ing.
If you watch the behind the scenes feature and her on jimmy fallon almost all of rewrite the stars etc is all them no doubles
She didn’t do all the stunts lol
Those last songs just cracked me up! 😆😂🤣
Never in a million year I thought that they would pull this off......
I wish they were in the actual movie...
This whole movie is BS. That's why it's genius! It's not a movie about the real P.T. Barnum. It's the movie Barnum would have made about himself
Actually if you see the movie that way it is better.
Holy Crap I never thought of it that way

Yes!!!
Yup. Saw it on Christmas Day and while the musical numbers were great, I couldn't stop squirming at the inaccuracies. This movie was basically a high-class fanfic about P.T. Barnum.
sibsing me
Certainly!
I noticed a lot of people complaining that the story shouldn’t be criticized for not being historically accurate, but imo I think it should be criticized for this because if they’re going to use real life people to tell a story it should at least be accurate , and if it wanted to tell it’s own story fine, just name the characters something that isn’t tied to real life people
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Ever hear of historical.fiction
It doesn't have to be spot on accurate (although I find dedication to those details much more admirable) but it also shouldn't be grossly misrepresenting the truth either.
Lol that movie is a great example of a stupid ass idea being ridiculously well executed.
But Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires is a masterpiece, and totally accurate for sure!
Oh my gosh, I stinking died at the new song lyrics LOL! So true!

Grace Przywara That is the only thing good from the movie

No she doesn't. Actors can't do their own stunts for insurance purposes. Only cruise does his owns stunts
I don't think a single person over the age of 8 thought this movie was intended to be historically accurate.
You give to much credit to p[eople over the age of 8
Spring tiiiiiime with Hitleeeer in Germannnnnny
Andrew Wood Comparing Barnum to Hitler is kind of silly. Even some of the things in this video are twisted to make him look worse. For instance, when he got into politics, he was actually very outspoken and active against slavery. I'm not saying he was perfect, and I'm not even saying he was good. Neither of us probably know the answer to that question, at least not based on a musical and a comedy RUclips video.
Brittany Duffy for hitler*
There are a lot of idiots in the world
Zendaya actually did most of her stunts herself, so she wasn't "mostly a body double".....

So did Keanu Reeves in John Wick, only difference being that John Wick is a good movie.

Nope. That's not accurate. It did well on WOM not marketing.
I was waiting for someone to finally say what an awful person P.T Barnum was
x2
Actually not so awful.
Say what you will, you can't argue with this soundtrack
Great soundtrack, average movie but great soundtrack still
You really can't
2:37 The guy who impersonates Hugh Jackman's voice is really good.
Skoldpadda i think they meant in the video
He sung in the movie
Here, here.
"No one came into it not knowing what they were signing up for" sums up this movie in a peanut shell.
"Used deformities for financial gain" BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I really wish you guys had full versions of these parody songs. They're amazing
The girl that sings the "Not Me" portion actually has a wonderful voice! I would buy her CD.
She was better than Loren Allred in my opinion
Loren Allred sang the song "Never Enough". Rebecca Ferguson (who played Jenny Lind) lip-synced it on the film.
This is as brutal as I needed it to be 😂
"M'Logan."
M'lord (mylord) because he owns all the top hats + Logan, as in the X-Men movies = M'Logan. A great pun, pretty stealthy.
A lot of these comments seem to forget the central conceit of Honest Trailers: Its all about being nitpicky and overly-critical for the sake of comedy. That's the point. If you are taking it seriously, you are missing the point. Although this particular one is closer to a real critique than most.
THANK YOU
For the most part though, they are rather accurate
As historically inaccurate as this movie is, I still love the soundtrack
The Soundtrack is complete garbage if you compare it to iconic musicals like Chicago, Funny Girl, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables, etc.
Who cares if it is accurate. It’s a musical not a history special.

It's very common for actors to learn the talents of characters they will portray, however, they do this *own their own.* When it is time to film the scenes for the movie, assuming the Insurance Lawyers will even allow the actor to attempt it in the first place, there is often very little chance the Director will prefer the actor's _briefly practiced_ performance over the stunt-double who _does it for a living._
So while there may be "Behind the Scenes" footage of her (or any other actor in any other movie) doing stunts, that is not confirmation that the person in the finished scene will be her.
Isnt that that guy from overwatch
I never understood why everybody liked this movie so much. Catchy songs, sure, but even with them included it was meh at best

I HATE circuses, Barnum, and almost anybody in the industry, but Greatest Showman was a really good movie in my opinion. I loved it.
Meh Space Dorito now, don’t generalize ALL circuses. I’m in a circus group and our goal is to make children happy, and to teach them skills of the circus genre, not all circuses are bad. Just saying

Do an Honest Trailer for Mean Girls!!!
I didn't even know P.T Barnum really existed I thought everything was fictional tbh
Pretty sure Zendaya was never a body double. Could swear I’ve seen an interview where she said she had to train for it and there was a no net.
James West Lol that’s so funny that you believe that
They did have safety wires on her, but she did all the stunts...She worked on it for months before the shoot.
Yeah she was all hooked up to safety gear. They just lacked a net. But most the stunts were her. The director wanted to use a double as little as possible. Why it’s funny I believe this I would love to know.
Yeah I saw the cut clips too
Nathan Freeman Why is it funny? Its true that Zendaya did some of her stunts Im pretty sure there were a couple of scenes where she needed a double But most of that Was Zendaya
What makes a character interesting is when they have nuance to them, when they are both good and bad the way humans actually are in real life. Also, the best part about this movie is showing how you can take a trait that has caused you misery and turn it into something you profit from by working hard yourself, accepting that the world is the way it is and carving a place for yourself none the less. It is a perfect message to be sent out in an age where people are coddled into emotional fragility and outrage runs amok.
