I think it’s even more interesting that how people act toward risk is more so how they act toward estimated or perceived risk (subjective), and not on the actual risk itself (objective).
In our lives it is very very rare to actually have a handle on objective risk - too many variables, and too many unknowns to really determine - so the vast majority of the time we are operating off of subjective risk. Subjective risk is informed by objective factors, but to varying amounts. Statistics can only get you so far.
There are many cases of “risk takers” having regret after a bad outcome, but also the “risk averse” regretting not having pushed further. This is indicative that we are operating off of subjective risk, and that with further data, we (even as individuals) can have different subjective risk assessments of the “same” situation.
I would very much disagree with the binary manner that you presented these groups (risk takers and risk avoiders), and would say that it is much more of a spectrum that everyone is always sliding along and finding their place. Everyone isn’t either agoraphobic or a madcap. The vast majority of people are somewhere in between. The cognitive dissonance of finding a balance between these extremes is a fundamental part of being human, both individually and communally.

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  Год назад +10

That's so true. Because we don't actually know how to calculate risk. And when we do we can really only calculate it for ourselves based on our own abilities. There's nothing wrong with being risk averse and there's nothing wrong with taking risk. It's wildly personal as long as you're not putting other people within your boundaries of risk.
The simple comment is often made, that's too risky. And I have no idea what that means. Too risky for what? For who? What's the risk and what am I risking? Even if it's very risky as far as threatening death is concerned is that good or bad?
People will sit on their couches super depressed almost to the point of suicide watching videos of other people's lives expressing concern for the risk that we are taking. While we in good health and good attitudes explore the Great outdoors.
It's not something I ever thought about until making this videos and reading through RUclips comments the evaluation of risk and danger and how various people feel about it. Some of the logic and illogic.
      * most of the time when I'm talking on video I am rambling and have not given much thought to it. Just trying to explore ideas that come up. It never once occurred to me that what I am doing has any risk at all. Or that should be anything but fun until I started reading RUclips comments and people were affected. Took me a while to understand even what they were talking about.

So you like caving enough to go into these small spaces where I would die of a heart attack if ever in the caves you go to. So is the fun factor higher than the nervousness/scared feelings you say you get sometimes?

@@gertpacu3926I think it’s pretty clear what his answer is, otherwise he would not continue caving. If he was getting paid, MAYBE he would continue doing something he didn’t like, but since it is a hobby, I think it stands to reason that the enjoyment factor (for him) surpasses any anxiety. And remember…anxiety can be like a drug, as some people actually chase the feeling of fear. Blood pressure rises, the heart beats faster, perspiration begins, eyes dilate due to the adrenaline response, etc…and those symptoms can (for some folks) feel like getting high.
Similarly, while having a heart attack certainly COULD happen, you might surprise yourself if you tried something like this. Fear is filled with irony, in that we can overcome most fears (even irrational ones) if we are steadfast in our commitment to not let fear rule us, but that also means taking steps to minimize the effect that fear has on us. Similarly, our bodies (and minds) are more powerful than we give them credit for. The actual likelihood of you having a heart attack and dying, if you were in a confined area, is small. You might have an anxiety attack, and all the symptoms associated with it, including FEELING like you’re going to die, but the phrase “scared to death” is just that…a phrase. The likelihood of actually dying from fear is really, really small. But yeh…I get it. I’m claustrophobic too, but working to train myself to have a different response to the fear I feel when in confined spaces.

Many people believe they can preserve their life by avoiding dangers. But to me, that's wasting your life, since on some level everything becomes dangerous.
And there is now almost a permanent cultural divide along these lines. Staying alive versus living. You do need both, but living is a lot more fun and more fun and interesting.

First video of yours I’ve found. Wanted to share something my scoutmaster told me. There was never a safe option. Just the illusion of safety. The only real safety you have is recognizing the risk in each option, making your choice and aligning yourself to do Your best with that choice. What is really risky is believing that there is any such thing as safety. The beautiful thing is that when you accept the risk and take it head on, you realize you are a lot stronger then you thought. You won’t need the illusion of safety to carry you through. You will become your own safety. Thanks for your thoughts. Be safe in the life you choose.

That CAN be true, but stepping out your front door adds risk to your life. All things have inherent risk, even something as simple as eating. Some actions carry an acceptable risk (like, say, eating), but that’s where the objective and subjective becomes fuzzy. What is acceptable risk for one person might not be for another person and as long as nobody is forced to swallow somebody else’s subjectivity then all is hunky dory. Besides…for me, personally, I would rather live with a little risk, and really LIVE, than stay on the couch and never truly LIVE.

He says. "Remember that chap about twenty years ago? I forget his name. Climbed Everest without any oxygen, came down nearly dead. When they asked him, they said why did you go up there to die? He said I didn't, I went up there to live."

I live where winter and ice are a thing. I could get injured or die every time I step outside my front door, even just heading to work in the morning(not even fun involved) if I slip on the ice and crank my head.
It doesn't mean I just stay at home because it's safer.
To me, safety is about mitigating some risks, but not completely avoiding them. I have never been caving but I've worked in some pretty claustrophobic conditions here and there, some say they could be considered unsafe, but just like caving, it's about educating oneself and having the correct gear, and mindset to go with the conditions.
    Keep up the great content!

Well cold temperatures are a real unseen enemy. These caves are about freezing year round.
There is no way to properly evaluate risk for anyone but yourself, in my opnion. This has only been problematic for society recently when there are problems which cause people to fall on divided sides of a risk line. So at least, the topic of risk and safety have become extremely valid, if contentious.
I would even argue that lines of risk can almost predetermine a person's political persuasion. Which is really crazy even if there is only a grain of truth to the idea.

For the record I will return to this cave! Very often we have to go multiple times to get ourselves into the correct mentality and bring the correct gear. But usually not near the beginning!
Yes the camera helps. To a point. It helps the mild lonely feeling of being in the darkness. It creates an unseen encouraging audience. But if it gets really difficult then it's just the equipment that is hard to use. Now and then we have to set it down for safety.

Since you talk about safety in this video I'm gonna comment here what I would otherwise have placed under one of the other 7 or 8 of your videos I watched in the last two days. I have no interested or business in caving whatsoever. RUclips got me here, I think after I watched a couple of (near) deadly diving accidents out of sheer engineering curiosity and thrill. That John Johnson case was one of the first caving videos I watched and I have to say I had no idea what caving was about and I, too, was shaking my head in disbelief upon the recklessness I witnessed. I went on to see cave-diving videos and finally ended up on your channel. Not quite by accident because I felt a surge to hear some explanation about what is going on made by a pro. Among the many diving/cavediving/caving videos I saw, your videos (all of them) in contrast to all the others are building up confidence in me about what it is you do, about why and how you do it and about where the limits and dangers are and how you avoid them. So I just want to point out that I think you're doing great work. Not just the caving but the public message you send even more so. I, too, do dangerous things (by far not as dangerous as what you do) but I get the same negative comments and sometimes this sort of unbelieving admiration. It was a pleasure to watch your content, it changed the first impression of caving I got into a positive impression. As an aerospace engineer I can very much relate to your concept of safety and the danger-avoiding principles you use. Also, I think you are right about this widening gap between a (surprisingly large) group of our population that try to avoid any perceived risk at any costs and the other, smaller group, who seem to have something in their lifes that makes them happy and who therefor are willing to take risks. And I think it is true that people like you, who are aware of risks and willingly navigating (around) them are actually far more safe than the people never questioning the actual nature of all the perceived risks they fear. On the other hand there also seem to be a lot of reckless people exploring caves in a very excited way, ignoring all the dangers and most often getting out alive by sheer luck. You find those people in everything you do and I see that is them who are constantly feeding water on the wheels of those who would like to see all "dangerous" activities shut down. It is making me furious to hear that it has already gotten so far that even your valuable, educational and fascinating content is being cancelled.

Also wanted to say thanks for sharing your thoughts about the risks of what you do and how it relates to our culture’s expectations and taboos. There will always be people who think someone is insane for putting themself into a scenario that they view as a phobia situation. People who are afraid of snakes might think that of someone who handles dangerous snakes.
I guess what I’m trying to say, is that we shouldn’t judge the merits or danger of what someone else does based on how we would feel in that situation. I would be terrified to crawl into those caves, but I trust and respect that you know what you are doing, and have considered things beyond my understanding in deciding what is worth it to you.
I hope that made sense. Haha. Sometimes people do dumb things without thinking. But you obviously go about things very smartly. People just need to have a little more faith that others actually know what they are doing.

Now it’s so SAFE that the necessary work, which prevents much greater hazards like explosions, can’t be done by employees. We have specialist contractors who don’t know the facility as well come and do our work for a lot more money and a lot less frequently. Employees SAFE jobs are so boring that they don’t pay attention or even recognize some hazards. Disaster. We tend to live up to what people expect of us. I think caving teaches a mental strength. It has taught me that though I am sometimes afraid, that doesn't need to be a hard boundary. And the best weapon I have against that kind of fear is patience. If you are patient, you can get through a problem. If you are impatient, you're going to have a bad time.
That is a very very difficult lesson.

I did go back and complete this cave! I think I might put the 2 videos together and send them over to the main channel.

I can’t get enough of your content. I’m now onto the second channel! I would love to try caving, but I’m claustrophobic, and have experienced severe anxiety in the past. But, If I could learn to stay calm, and control negative thoughts in a cave, I’d feel like I could do anything. Do you ever have times where anxiety rears it’s ugly head? I bet meditation would be a useful thing to learn whilst caving!

When anxiety rears its ugly head I go caving.
We are generally down here because it is peaceful and quiet and free from the stresses of life. Partly because it is challenging and will take your focus off whatever else it is on.
