When you were talking about your definition of success, you had said something along the lines of "not to get philosophical" however on the contrary in my opinion I think your words are quite therapeutic and motivating. I recently discovered your channel and watch it just as much for the commentary as I do for the caving content. I also learned from a young age that you don't live by other's definition of success, you live by your own definition. One other thing I wanted to add, it quite literally blows my mind how fast you guises shirts get shredded I mean you must go through caving clothes constantly. How do you guys afford that? I would guess you probably make use of the Goodwill and thrift shops. Anyways thanks for the content I love it!

Another one here, me, who found this channel because of Nutty Putty. I didn’t know there was criteria for a passage to be called a “push.” I have done some cave diving as a teenager and I was never claustrophobic. Pitch black and confined spots was no problem, I had very good training and we talked through the different scenarios that could happen and how to react. We also never did super tight spots where you have to remove your tank to be able to squeeze through. As an old guy now, my claustrophobia is full blown. I’m impressed you can do this and make it seem natural. It took me three days to watch the last descent movie. Holy crap! Stay safe and keep loving life.

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  20 дней назад +1

Some of the terminology is caver specific. Like pushing a cave.
What we're finding is many caves. If not, most caves that have been discovered have not been given a good push. For most people discovering a cave and looking at its easy parts is enough. Not being many caves left to discover comma our business is pushing them. Often enough we find really massive cave area through narrow squeezes.

@7:50 the crack in the ceiling gives me the heebie jeebies. Isn’t it theoretically possible that cave passages, especially crawls like this, could experience wear & stress over time from cavers going through? Sort of like how hiking trails wear down over time? Those thoughts scare me as I watch 😂. I wish one day you discover an ancient treasure in some undiscovered section of a cave. I also think that it would be epic if you had a cable tv show and you travelled around the world exploring historic cave systems. The Grand Canyon, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, somewhere in Patagonia, Iceland, Oh yeah that would be a great show!

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  Год назад +2

Probably not, especially considering cavers don't go through. Most of the caves you see us in are either never explored or perhaps explored by 4 or 5 people at the most. Maybe 10 people have been in this cave. Moreover, this isn't the kind of rock that collapses. Lava rock hardens quite a bit as it cools and it takes thousands of years to crumble away. This lava bed is relatively new at just a few thousand years old.

I was exploring the Mt. St. Helen’s Red Zone in the mid 80’s. 🤫 I love seeing the forests in your videos too, bringing back so many good memories I can almost smell it. Thank you for the videos and for sharing what you guys love doing. It’s inspiring and motivating.
I never thought that watching guys in a dark cave would help me with my depression and struggles in life. Thank you again.

Well thank you so much. 90% of the caving we do is within one or two miles of Ape Cave. Including this video.
It's not about the darkness. It's about bringing light to that darkness. Darkness doesn't have any strength of its own just hasn't had light introduced yet. Sadness feels like it has its own strength and ability to sour all of life. But with time and patience it can be scoured out with light. Yes yes yes

@@EvenDarker Yes Yes Yes. THANK YOU. Very powerful and moving words.
I’m on the other side of the world now, but looking forward to returning for a visit in 2023, as I have family in the PNW. Ape Caves is on my to do list, the lower cave for me at this point in life… but watching your amazing dad may just motivate me to do the upper cave. 👏 👏 👏
I lived in Toutle as a child and wandered from sunrise to sunset any day I could, hiking, climbing trees, building forts, fishing, swimming, rock collecting, and hunting. My dad was in forestry and had made friends with Harry in the late 60’s. I have memories of going to see him with my dad and listening to them talking about prospecting and wildlife and of course the mountain blowing. Later my dad told me that he never warned Harry to leave because he was too stubborn and because he was living his dream. There’s risk in many things in life, but living the risky life you love is better than living the safe life you hate.
Love your positive attitudes and the excitement in your videos. Always upbeat and encouraging.
Thank you again for the videos. It’s obviously a lot more difficult for you to cave with all the extras to make the videos for us. We appreciate it. I know this is your hobby and you lead busy lives so we also appreciate the time you spend editing and uploading videos.

This channel has pretty much awoken some need for me to explore the underground, I’ve always been interested in things like the Paris catacombs and I even explored a little drain pipe about 2-3 feet wide not terribly tight but it was fun just to say I went down that dark hole nobody else is willing to go down and I had fun, and I know there is a cool little room in the middle of it, I’m now looking for a cave but one with maybe at the smallest a 2 foot squeeze, I’m still a beginner but this is definitely something you’ve made me want to do.

I get more than enough excitement from watching your videos, though. I do find it fascinating, I'm just not the kind of person that enjoys taking life risks for fun. About the most risky activity I partake in is boating and fishing haha. But some people are just homebodies. We're satisfied by seeing the sights through the lens of others, like you, and don't feel that need to do it ourselves. The only compulsion I feel to travel has nothing to do with sightseeing, but trying local cuisines in other countries. And if I could do that from home that'd definitely be how I'd do it.

The most attractive attribute of your channel is the realness, so i feel that will make your channel "successful" without having to sell out for anyone here. The reason why i am here, and i assume a lot of others are, is because of the great energy coming from you guys through these videos. Yeah, caving is cool to watch, but make no mistake, the energy and realness put into your channel is what makes people like me a fan who will continue watching & supporting. We see the enjoyments, satisfactions and accomplishments of your adventures and it makes watching fun whether a person thought they liked caving videos or not. Combine these qualities with what to most of us, is death defying feats of claustrophobic cave horror, and you got one awesome channel! (Well, multiple awesome channels lol) Great work

We feel super fortunate that people are watching us even though we aren't overproducing anything. Just trying to make cool videos of what we are actually doing. And I've been very proud of Jacob even though it's quite a bit of popularity for a young man... It doesn't seem to faze him a bit.

I wondered if someone could do it differently and still be successful making original content.
Recently, RUclips Took ad control out of the hands if it's creators. The reason was because 95% of creators we're setting the ads to the maximum amount possible anyways. So RUclips just did away with the controls alltogether. Which means our videos now have video ads even though we don't want it. Everybody's so greedy.

Thank you so much for all the kind words. Safety is interesting. Our priority is living life not preserving it. Preservation of life would mean I would just stay-at-home and do nothing at all dangerous. So we choose a path and then go about that path with appropriate caution. Appropriate fear keeps us alive, inappropriate fear is is debilitating. And the sweet spot somewhere in there is really almost always a personal choice.
That personal choice is so personal it is largely what is responsible for a lot of people being angry at each other the last couple years. Do we protect and preserve life? Or do we live life and protect it along the way. We do both but I think most people lean to one side or the other.

I think that the thing that messes with my head the most is that when I watch this, as claustrophobic as it is already, I'm still acutely aware of the space around me. It's like my brain convinces itself that behind your camera is open space. If I actually think about the fact that the whole tunnel is that constricted AND that you're under the ground, it's enough to launch me into an existential crisis. My ancestors must have been plains people.

It's interesting that you've really thought it through. Because there is psychology behind some of the strange feelings and your personal assessment is fairly accurate.
The brain doesn't know how to deal with the fact that... You can clearly see there is danger, but you also clearly know that you are not in danger. The human mind hasn't developed a good way of dealing with this apparent contrast.

I've been claustrophobic as far back as 12 years old. I use your videos as mental conditioning to control my phobic anxiety. You record top notch caving videos. You clearly have acquired a professional level of caving experience as does Jacob. I have learned several techniques from you both that I will never use because I live vicariously through your videos 🤪. Please so not let complacency cloud your risk assessment in your pursuit of thrill.
    1) within an unknown squeeze crawl, do you consider a back out distance limit?
I recently watched a 2005 video in which a rather large caver traversed the birth canal within the nutty putty cave. He appeared exhausted. The thought came to mind as Jacob once said "if you get stuck moving forward, unstick by moving in reverse" In this video I was thinking the same about you and the need to back out. Probably similar to the rule of thirds in underwater cave diving.
    2) how to determine your physical limitations?
3} how do you improve or maintain your conditioning.
Thanks again. Congratulations to Jacob for being the only one I've seen enter that one tight squeeze where he exited on your shoulder. Jacob was clearly excited about his accomplishment.

Well thanks for watching and the support and encouragement.
We consider everything as we go. So yes I consider backout distance. I can generally backup the same amount as I can go forward. I can backup in a vertical passage that is very tight. We practice those things.

Hi Caveman. Great video. I think what you were talking about was innovation. I agree that you can be successful by doing what others have done before but the most successful people are innovative and do something unique that no one else is doing. Thats why i enjoy watching your channel so much because its different from what other people are doing and its exciting and interesting.

Right, we aren't just trying to be "different" we are trying to do something... we want to do regardless of whether others have done it that way or not.
Unfortunately the Internet over time has kind of forced people into specific lanes. The last time creativity seemed encouraged was back on myspace.
All too often, when we push the boundaries of creativity, these Internet sites ban our content.
Something Jacob and I would like to do is physically reenact the John Jones death. No graphics, just us jammed inside a cave. Let's see how that holds up.

@@EvenDarker im surprised that you get content banned. Ive heard you mention that before on other videos. There is so much crazy stuff on youtube like the people who walk along the edge of skyscrapers. stuff like that is all over youtube. I whould love to see the John Jones reenactment I think it would be a good guild to what not to do in a cave. Anyway, have a great day.

It is our goal to make our videos as long as we can. But we do cut out what we feel is boring. Whats left is left!
With the exception of our somewhat uncut versions of adventures which are an hour.
Sometimes we start with 20 or 30 hours of video! I need to hire an editor.

It would be amazing to watch your videos in Imax. Our younger generations needs to see your videos. Thank You.

really like your mindset, sometimes its fine to sellout but some channels are crazy like you said. im mostly ok with ad as long as their not overwhelming.
