- Here's a radio only its mother would love. This week I will tackle one of the ugliest cabinets I've seen, is there a swan hiding in there?

David, sometimes (always) I feel guilty for the entertainment and curiousity value when seeing how much effort and thought you do to achieve these results. 'Am anxiously awaiting the finished product! THANK YOU!
Thanks John, I am delighted you and others appreciate the effort, thank you 🙂
David, when I was younger I oversaw a elite cabinet shop. We made high end furniture for funeral homes. I had 3 master carpenters along with there apprentices I thought there work was spectacular, but what you did here is remarkable! I cant wait to see the finished product! As always well done mate!
David is proving to be somewhat of a master craftsman. I thought his idea with the cain strips was genius. I would never have thought of that.
Thanks Bruce. I'm enjoying the wood working and learning as I go along. I am anxious to see how it looks too, I have to leave it a few days before I reassemble it 🙂
@@1974UTuber I was thinking that some lengths of white jacketed vinyl covered wire would also work, but attaching it would pose a problem.
Hopefully David’s high end furniture doesn’t suffer the same fate as the woodwork in the funeral home!
@@roberto9666 Tubes would have to get pretty hot to cremate the cabinet.
I'm always impressed with the amount of work you put into these restorations, I can't imagine they looked as good the day they left the factory. But then these are getting your personal touch!
I think they may look better than new in their time.
Thanks Peter, that is usually my goal to make them new again 👍🙂
As always, I’m amazed at the amount of work and craftmanship you put in to give this old, ugly, battered radio a new life. The result will be spectacular!
I hope so Rene, thank you 👍🙂
That is some beautiful work, I can really appreciate the quality and effort that you are putting into that radio👍😁.
Thanks Tommy, I hope it's worth it 😀
What an honor to see this talented gentleman at work. Thanks for giving us bliss by letting us watching you work, David. Whoever painted that cabinet before was a color blind butcher.
Hi Luigi, thank you. I don't know what they were thinking painting it like that 😄
Nice, I love your creative and meticulous restoration of these hidden gems. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thank you for watching Gopherdave1 😀
I believe with confidence that you deserve an award of taste, art and science that your work deserves to be good lessons for all levels. Thank you, Mr. David with my respect
Thank you Elc.Eng 😀
Once again, you've made a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Very good work.
Thanks Rich Glenn 😀
"Listen very carefully, I shall say zis only once":
That was a really great woodworking tutorial.
Wish i had all that equipment, and a similar shop to work in.
Wish you well, and a "Good Moaning". :-)
Good moaning Geir, Thank you. 'would you like a ride in my little tank' 😀
@@DavidTipton101 Never mind the tank, you need to fix the radio to receiver a massasje from London about the 2 airmen in the basement.
@@geirendre Haha.. yes I do... 👍😄
From a flimsy box to a shining rock solid castle wow!
David, The Jack of all trades, thanks for showing us!
Thank you for watching W Rex 😀
Another wonderful labour of love. I can't wait for part 3!
Thank you Trogdor 👍🙂
As always another great video. I can't wait for the next instalment.
Hi Stephen, thank you 😀
Beautiful work, David. It is the mark of a true craftsman to make even the hidden parts look nice. Looking forward to the next episode!
Thanks Mark 👍🙂
Hi David. I always enjoy your videos. When I saw this radio I thought it looked dreadful and that you may scrap the cabinet altogether and build a new one. However as previous videos have proved that your restoration skills are superb, and I'm sure you will again do an amazing job with this radio. Look forward to the next video. Keep up the good work. Chris.
Hi Chris, thank you. I hope it comes out ok too 🤞🙂
Even when he comes up against the unfamiliar, he uses his transferable skills and gets it right; in this case his wide knowledge of different materials - bloody brilliant!
Thank you berniestep 👍🙂
Most all the radio repair sites on RUclips do not follow through with cabinet restoration as you have done. This is what sets you apart from all the others. I look forward to each and every one of your radio restorations with great anticipation.
I noticed that before I started posting on RUclips lakrfan. I very happy folks are enjoying the format. Thank you 👍🙂
David your craftsmanship continues to amaze me. You are very talented.
Thank you Tom 👍🙂
What amazing, AMAZING work Dave! Simply beautiful. I can't wait to see it together!
Thank you GVW 👍🙂
Mindbogglingly thorough, David! Thank you very much. Can't wait for next week - it's going to look beautiful!!
Hi Dave, I hope so, fingers crossed 🤞🙂
Dave. For removing enamel based paints from plastic you can coat it in automotive brake fluid. Wait overnight and the paint should be bubbled off without harming the plastic. Make sure to wash the plastic parts thoroughly with soap and water afterwards.
Yeah, that's a good idea, thanks Phil 👍😀
Not even finished yet and i'm already amazed. Can't wait to see the finished project now. Have a great week David and thank's for sharing :-)
Hi SargentRay. Thank you and thank you for joining me 👍🙂
Hi David.
Great video. Really like the music you used.
And building the drama with the Jaws type music while removing the plastic escutcheons just proves you are as good at video production as you are at all aspects of radio restorations.
Can wait for the finished product.
Happy to see the 50's Johnny Rocket Diner theme get stripped away.
Thanks 1974UTuber, the colour scheme was a little hard on the eye 😏 luckily they had painted over the orange! Thanks, I hope it comes out a nice radio 🙂
@@DavidTipton101 Its looking like itt will already.
I was hopeful of the next installment tonight but I will have to go to sleep still wondering where you are up to with the build
Thanks again Dave for a brill video. Love the Gallic music. I think maybe you should add a disclaimer though. "No wood borers were harmed during the making of this video."
That's a good thought Dave, I don't want the animal right folk after me 😀 Thanks 🙂
I'm very much enjoying this restoration. I must confess, most of the radio jargon goes over my head but the case restoration is a wonderful demonstration of the subtle art of rehabilitation of the original aesthetic.
Hi Mark, thank you. Not to worry, most of the radio jargon goes over my head too 😄
Excellent as always, David. Looking forward to your next video!
Thank you David 👍😀
I continue to be amazed at your skills, not just with the electronics but also with the cabinetwork. Your approach is first-rate. Take it one step at a time and deal with issues as they arise.
The trick with the emery cloth on your level is really clever. The best craftsmen are the ones who have imagination and the ability to see things from a different perspective.
I learn so much just from watching the way you solve problems. You should add "Educational" to your categories!
Thanks Michael 👍😀
I'm one of your non-radio-restorer fans David but I wouldn't miss one of your vids now. This one taught me a ton of stuff, like what oil-canning is and how it can be repaired. And thanks for making me aware of Aqua Coat; that looks like an excellent product. Your channel was recommended out of the blue for me so it seems the RUclips algorithm might be rather cleverer than I thought. Looking forward to part three mate. Thanks and stay healthy.
Hi Mark, thank you. Oil canning is normally cured by shrinking the centre of the oil can which involves heat and deforming the centre hot spot. I tried the opposite here by stretching around the oil can because I didn't want to damage the mesh. There are lots of methods for filling grain on timber, Aqua Coat does work well though. Thanks Mark 👍
Wow, that's going to look really sweet once it is all together. Great job as usual David!
Thank you Adventures In Modern Recording , wow, that's a mouthful 👍🙂
Another excellent episode... I used to listen to serials on the radio when I was a kid - it's a bit like that with you... really exciting waiting for the next episode. Your woodworking skills outshine everyone - you took what was a ratty dirty borer ridden cabinet and turned it into an amazing cabinet. I love your "smart" solutions... like the wooden insert, flattening the warped back and of course your dry humor.
Hi Kenneth, thank you. I'm glad you enjoy all those things. I hope it looks good when it's finished 👍🙂
Nicely done, I much prefer the restored original style compared to the somewhat avant garde paint job someone gave it in the past.
That's a nice way of putting it TheStuffMade. I guess it looks cool at the time 🤔🤦♂️🙂
Oh my god that turned out beautiful. The patchwork where the woodworm ate through was barely visible and I knew where it was. The final finish on the wood is one of the finest I've ever seen, and I follow quite a few restorators/carpenters. Bravo.
Thank you Manny 😀
I used to rebuild furnature as a hobby, what I did when it came to replacing old screws in old holes, I would take tooth picks and insert them in the hole, cut them to size and glue them in, then the old screws could bite into the toothpicks and force the screw to maintain it's fit for another 100 years or so.
Hi Jerry, I do the same, I use toothpicks, matches, even bamboo skewers for larger holes. As you say, it works well 🙂
Once again a beautiful job for some who say that they are learning. I don't know if anyone else has remarked, but I appreciate that you use newspaper in that one gets to see the ads and articles that are in your country. Thanks Mate!
Hi Phillip, I do wonder about the newspaper, I do the same on other peoples videos with newspapers too 😀
David, absolutely stunning! You've got balls to attempt this job. Congratulations and well done! Thank you for you're fabulous series and achievements! I cant wait to see the finished result.
Thank you Roger, I hope it's worth the effort 😀
This is really coming out nicely. Flattening the back was a nice surprise, coming out so smooth and flat. Thanks for cluing me in with respect to the Aqua Coat. I didn't appreciate that before. Looking forward to the next installment. Thanks again.
Hi George, thanks. I was surprised the back came out so well, I will leave it a few days and see if it stays flat. The Aqua Coat works well, you can use other products or watered down wood filler too 🙂
I went through the comments to make sure all feathers were given to you, .... to put on your hat 😄 All the feathers you deserve, of course. Yep, they are all there 👍 It will take quite a hat to put those all on at once.
It took me the whole video to finish my breakfast 😁
Thanks for cleaning your wife's toothbrush, and the great choice of music. You are a talented man, David 👍🤝
Cheers,
Nard
Thanks Nard, I love my wife dearly and it's the least I can do to give her toothbrush a quick rinse 👍😀
Fantastic work there lots of patience required keep up the good work enjoy watching your videos and the old valve radios deserve to be restored, this is going to look amazing once it's all back together, such a shame they don't make stuff like this anymore just throw away rubbish.
Thank you Rajvinder. These radios are from a different era when they could be repaired, not so anymore 😢🙂
Well done 👍. I'm just learning the electronics part of radio restoration but have been a hobby furniture builder and restorer for 40 years and I'm impressed not only with your electronics knowledge but with your woodworking and refinishing as well. Again well done
That sounds very similar to me Joe. Good luck with the electronics 👍🙂
Really good work, I'm in awe of the patience and ingenuity
Thank Paul, I'm trying, at least that's what my wife says 😉🙂
@@DavidTipton101 perhaps are wives are related !
I am amazed at the number of times you do variations on sanding, lacquer, smoothing, staining. There was a point when I thought "that's a great finish" only to hear you announce that there was more to do. wow!
Hi David S. Yes, there is a lot of work in doing it properly, I found it is better to get the prep right than to have to start again. It took a while to get that in my head 🙄😄
Hallo David! Your videos are evolving by time into an ARTWORK: the electronic repair, the case restoration, the video cutting, the music accompaniment and the overall rhythmic construction of the video.
I also have many clamps of all sorts, some are older than 100 years but rarely used.
Thanks Latürnich. You must have an interesting collection of clamps 👍🙂
Love the application of music and the work was a joy to watch. This is going to look like nothing else. Cheers.
Hi Pauline, thank you. I think you are on to something there, it will look like nothing else, one way or another. Cheers 😀
In a strange way, it reminds me of French cars :D
Looking good David. Can't wait to see it all back together and working. 73 Joe
You and me both Joe 🙂
Great work David.. Your a master.. Taking something as bad as that and getting it to actually look good is not an easy task..
Hi Le, I haven't made it look good yet 😀 thanks
Good afternoon Mr Tipton 🇬🇧 did I see some woodworm and did. You treat it has always good video 👌 thanks 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hi Phil, you did see woodworm. Most of the damage has been repaired now. Thanks Phil 🦘🦘🦘
Perhaps one of your most involved restorations to date but one that looks quite magnificent. Tres bon.
There are so many parts Gary, I hope it looks good in the end. Merci 😀
That background music: "Mr Jingles...gonna be a CIRCUS mouse down in Florida!" 'Eduard Delacroix, The Green Mile!
Hi John, I haven't seen that film in years, poor Mr Jingles 😢😀
David, the best part about all your radio adventures is watching the evolution of your craftsman-ship. You never claimed to be a _Professional_ ;maybe... but the end results are saying something else. The learn as you go method is really a beneficial asset to this community, I actually like knowing that these videos can be referenced later on if needed, the detailed procedures you use, like emery grit, drying time between gluing, paint coats, on-camera mistakes if any, granted I know there are a lot of detailed diy videos on here but they all somehow can't help but 'over do' it with A/V effects sometimes missing the point entirely or just right out blasted annoying. You are 1up on them with your - To mention a few that makes a really good video - Are good camera prospective, audio engineering, and very professional and articulate narrations, AND Most Important are restoration videos that can be viewed even at night, without bothering the household or neighbours. Which most of the working class like myself that is mostly the only time there was before the lock-down. Well...
Jusqu'a la prochaine fois.
Hi Raul, you are correct, I do this as I go and I'm learning a lot in the process. I'm very happy you and others get something from what I'm doing. It's very humbling. Cheers 👍
The way you tackled the various problems I was going "Yeah, that'll work." or "Oh, I'd never have thought of that!" and sure enough, those bits of cabinet came up an absolute treat.
I find your videos very entertaining and satisfying but they're also very good for nicking ideas! looking forward to the next part.
Thanks Paul, all my ideas are trademarked you know 😄
@@DavidTipton101 Cheque's in the post!
Hi David, beautiful workmanship! Can't wait to see this radio back together. Things are warming up here in Canada with the most pleasant May in years. 30 Celsius, in Nova Scotia, which is very warm for us in Springtime. Greetings to our Commonwealth Brothers & Sisters in Australia.
Hi Mary in sunny Nova Scotia. I'm glad the winter blues have passed for you. I'm looking forward to seeing the radio finished too. Thanks for the greetings, I will pass it on 👍😀
Amazing progress an skill ,love ur idea with the cane trim and its all looking very smart indeed ,Always great watching a genius at work and looking very much forward to ur next video,Cheers David and France will be proud of you lol.
Hi Doc, thank you 😀
I love watching your videos David! You always come up with some vary creative solutionms youngman.
Thanks Ronnie. i don't get called young man very much these days 😄
I really enjoyed that David and you do a fabulous job at explaining each procedure as well. Nice choices with the music too especially when removing the plastic pieces from the metal fascia. It was Jaws like suspense not knowing whether it was going to break or not. Great job.
Hi graham, removing the plastic pieces was Jaws like tense for me too 😄 thanks
Excellent Dave - the cane was a great idea and we enjoyed your backing music choices! 😀
Thank you The Ultimate Recycler. The cane came very well and there was cane supplier 20 minutes away, who knew 😀
Good editing. Thanks for sharing what you do and the effort. Appreciation.
Thank you mark 😀
I would call you a master craftsman, Sir. Well done!
Thanks Mark, I don't think I'm quite at that level 😀🙂
Truly masterful! Peerless is not an exaggeration.
Haha... thanks Moshe 👍😀
What an enjoyable video, thank you so much! I'd never have the patience or indeed skill to achieve what you do. Superb music choice as well, really had me going with the shark theme !
Thanks John, I hope Mr Spielberg isn't watching. BTW, I watched the movie Duel last week, he has a talent, great movie 👍🙂
Yes, that had me on the edge of my seat too. Actually, it scared me a lot more than Jaws did.
Crikes, that's a old film, yeah he can craft a movie or two but I bet he's rubbish at fixing old radios, lol.
Excellent. I can't wait to see it back in one piece. I really enjoyed this part of the series;. Thanks!
Thanks tarstarkusz 😀
Very nice indeed! Especially liked the tango music and the Jaws-like theme. Both fitted well with the toothy look of those plastic trim pieces. The cain idea was great as well. Will have to remember that as an alternative to hard-to-find trim piping or brass tubing. And I was sure you'd ruin that back panel when you sprayed water on both sides but it came out like new! Another trick I'll be sure to remember!
Thank you Sincerely Yours 👍🙂
It’s amazing how much work you put into these radios ‼️
📻🙂
I know Jeff, I know 😢🙂
David Tipton
Look at it this way:
You are taking care of the environment.
You are a recycler. You take hopeless junk radios and keep them out of the landfills.
You recycle them into works of art❗️
( Hey, maybe you can get a government grant somehow)
(🤣)
📻🙂
Once again, amazing craftmanship and attention to detail. I can't imagine who in their right mind thought that tacky green was a good idea! Someone had a similar idea of painting the originally lacquered doors in my house, and now when I try to remove the paint I have the exact same issue of it being engraved deep in the wood grains! I was hoping to find a solution to removing it in this video, but seems like there isn't an easy way. Good thing is that they were painted white instead of green! 😂 Thank you for the video, it's always so relaxing to watch you work and listen to your voice!
Thank you Bumper3D. I don't understand how the paint penetrated past the original layer of varnish to get to the timber below. The top of the radio didn't suffer quite the same. Using a varnish with the pigment added may solve your door issue, it covered the bits of paint left in the radio top 👍🙂
Another great video David.
Thank you brcd131 😀
Pretty awesome so far. Your veneering work came out beautifully, I was a little worried you were going to paint it at first. Also the bead replacement was very impressive. I will save the rest of my comments for next week. 🤗
It would have been easier to paint it Phillip, I didn't think of that 🤦♂️ lime green would have been nice 😲 Thanks Phillip, till next week 👍🙂
Hi Dave. You've outdone yourself mate. This is looking fantastic. I can hear Edith Piaf in the distance already!!
Hi Derek, stay tuned, she may be closer than you think 👍😉
Well you have almost out done yourself this time David, I'm looking forward to see what it looks like fully finished, I showed my wife your video, wasn't Shure how interested she would be, to my surprise, she was overwhelmed by how much work you put into your restorations, and is now hooked lol, so you now have another subscriber, love your videos ,Best regards Barry
Hi Barry & wife, thank you. Glad you both enjoyed it, Cheers 😀
Impressive work, and beautiful results! I like the accordion in the sound track! NOBODY that I know listens to accordion anymore...the same crap as everywhere else...
Hi André, thank you. Amazing instrument the accordion. I watch people play them in amazement but as you say, not so popular any more 🙂
@@DavidTipton101 Amongst my other minor abilities, I'm a 'Folkie' Musician also... It's still very popular these days, and we love introducing kids to our old stuff! Great choice of backing... :-)
Thank you for another great restoration
Thanks Pedro 😀
She's coming up very nice indeed, a real beauty in the making I think.
If you soak that cane in warm water for a couple of hours it'll bend and form just a tad easier.
Can't wait to see it fired up and glowing... and I think it's gonna sound great. Cheers.
Hi scofab, I think you are right, it will sound good when it's assembled. I could have soaked the cane but it may have watered down the adhesive I thought so I didn't do it. It seems pretty secure now 👍🙂
Another excellent video. Thanks so much for taking the time and videoing your hobby for us, so we can enjoy as well. I wish I could try to do this hobby also, but here in the Philippines most antique items are long gone. Between the bugs, weather, atmosphere, and people just scrapping things that no longer work or are showing their age, it's near impossible to find anything worthwhile to work on. So ... I just have to live vicariously through your videos. I can't wait for the third installment!
Hi Tim, thank you and I'm glad you enjoy watching what I do. I can imagine conditions where you are aren't conducive to long life for radios 🙂
Even though I kind of liked the copper striping decoration more, this is still one dang fine radio!
It's unique whichever way you look at it Sterlin Silver. Thanks 👍🙂
Boy that has gone from looking like a licorice allsort radio to what the French would say Ooh La La going to be one Very Nice
Old Radio when finished looking forward to its completion.
Hi Nick, I hope so, liquorice allsort is fitting 😄 Thanks 😀
Flattening the cardboard back and clamping reminds me of Baumgartner Art Restoration.

Great job David. I love watching all of your videos. I must confess that I secretly wish that you run across a missing or broken part that you cannot source. I try to figure out how you will resolve the issue and I am almost always wrong. Your imagination and creativity are truly genius. I have learned a lot and have even been able some of your methods to use. Stay healthy and keep up the fine work. Thanks.

My work used to carry all kinds of tube radios for sale, its how I how I got my first tube set, a philco model 70, but besides that we've had a westinghouse grandfather clock radio thing come and go, a nd a bunch of multi-band tube radios, and oddlty this UNIC reminds me of a set we had, a bunch of push buttons for preset stations, a magic eye, multiple bands to pick
the original timber color was a surprise on that set, nice dark color
A grandfather clock/radio sound interesting, they had an American built one at a radio auction I went to last year. I can't imagine my radio would look like any other radio built 😄
Good Morning from the UK David, another great job, that veneer came out fantastic, a possible alternative (in plastic) for the cane insert might be to use the plastic piping cord that is used for car upholstery, a quick search on auction sites for plastic piping cord will bring up a fair few varieties. Keep up the good work and sharing the results with all of us.
Good morning Jimi, upholstery piping was my first thought but it didn't suit, I don't know how I ended up with cane. Thanks 😀
Really lovely cabinet work. Thanks!
Hi FC, thank you 😀
Looking good.Great work.Thanks.
Thank you Neil 😀
Another great restoration endeavor David. For future reference, replacement piping can also be found at businesses which sell guitar amplifier parts, speaker parts, and perhaps even musical instrument stores. Plenty of them on the web of course. Anyways, love your work and am looking forward to your next video. Thanks for keeping us involved.
Hi Bob, search as I might I couldn't find anything even close. If I need to, next time I will ring around the outlets you suggest, would have saved a lot of work 👍🙂
Fantastic video, high quality of your work, I liked the music at the back , I enjoyed very much.
I am anxious to see next video.
Congratulations - Sao Paulo - Brazil
Hi Fernando, thank you once again 😀
Another master class David. When I first started watching you last year I thought you were from an engineering background but with all this wood working I don't know! You really are a perfectionist aren't you? I hope before you retired you had a few apprentices under your mentoring to pass on all these skills and I'll bet your employers were sorry to see you go. Thanks for another great video.
Hi Graham, I was an engineer but have always liked woodwork as a hobby. We did have apprentices come through but they were in their 4th year by then and they knew more that me 😄
As usual... beautiful job!
Thanks 1212windows 😃
Can'r wait. That is going to turn out really good.
I hope so Andrew 😀
Wait ends.... lets enjoy watching🙂
Hi Manoj, thanks 🙂
And the wait get extended. LOL
This is a “doughnut shop” radio 📻 by looks. Kind of sounds like an instrumental of the song “Woman In The Back Of My Mind” by Mel Tillis. I heard it many years ago, but again in 2002 or 2003 with my mom. It could also be “Kiss Me Once, Kiss Me Twice, And Kiss Me Once Again”. This is a field coil speaker, and the radio cabinet is wood. You’ve also got a system of clamps I don’t have. Battery operated Dremel tool, I like an electric one ☝️ best. Great veneer job. A lot of new radios have this over particleboard. I knew, but Radiotvphononut lets this be known. I guess I need routers and power saws. Great 👍 engineering went into this radio. Right now, I don’t know the condition of the dial cord, but if you had to undo it, just take snapshots of your progress. I don’t think 🤔 this radio 📻 has a dial light, but I could be wrong. I’m watching this video since I know you just made it. “The American Beauty”, as this radio should be called. I now see, no dial light bulb. That paint requires a lot of ventilation, and no smoking 🚭. Just a safety reminder. If I had a big enough garage, I’d buy every antique radio 📻, and display them. Sheds are okay 👌 in one ☝️ way with radios if you want to keep them safeguarded in the box. Strict care must be adhered to, as far as dust, moisture, climate control, and many other factors. That doesn’t mean put the radios in the shed and abandon them. Great 👍 polishing job as this video approaches the end. Like these videos a lot. I know I couldn’t do a business like yours in an apartment. I’m going to see if I can buy myself a house 🏡 in a few years.
Thank Jeffery, Mel Tillis was a great talent
Looks great, David!!!
Thanks Edwin 😀
Love the music! 🇫🇷
Thanks for the feedback BadgerFlaps 👍😀
