    Hi Dave,
    I love your sense of humour! “...25% ether, quite relaxing to use...”. It’ll certainly sedate. It’ll make you unconscious if you sniff enough of it LOL.
    There are businesses in the world who rebuild idler wheels but they charge a arm and a leg for doing so.
    I’ve seen similar idler wheels like the one you made on a few 1970s and 1980s Japanese record decks. Wheels were made out of moulded plastic with a rubber tyre- very much similar arrangement to the one you made. They worked well, and the good thing about them the rubber tyre was available as a spare part: not that they needed replacing all that often.
    Personally I’d say you have done a brilliant job producing the replacement idler wheel. The deck as cleaned up well; you’ve made its wiring safe, and it does what it was designed to do. Bravo my friend ...and it has provided a bit of fun for your kids.
    Cheer, Phil.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  4 года назад +1

      Hi Phil, thanks. I might have a go at doing a 3D printed wheel with a bearing in the centre, the one I made was a test but it could work I think. The record player is working quite well despite my best efforts, very happy with the outcome 🙂

      @@DavidTipton101 If you wanted to go really posh you could machine the printed idler to final dimensions. I'd suggest good cooling if you're using PLA though :-D I once tried sanding a PLA print to get a smoother surface and could only do it with plenty of water and wet/dry paper. Printing the whole thing out of Flex would probably give the least amount of rumble but very limited grip as Flex has a pretty smooth surface.

I really admired your patience and persistence with creating the new idler wheel and reducing the wow. Watching you finding your way through the problems makes for very engaging viewing. @@DavidTipton101 I'm convinced the vacuum method is great! Someone on a forum recommended using a plain large syringe with the tip sealed to create a vacuum at very little cost.
      The funniest purpose I've used one of these household vacuum machines/baggers for was at work as the museum I work for re-opened after the recent lock-down. In order to be able to disinfect them more easily, one of my colleagues bagged all our keyboards used by visitors using her moms 1980s vacuum machine! They're horrible to type on now because you can neither feel the keys nor read the letters but they're safe :-)

I think the large hole was an American thing, a lot of records in Oz had a small hole but you could punch it out to make the larger 'American' hole and record players had a plastic 'washer' adaptor clipped to the player so you could play large hole records on a small hole player. Good going, that idler wheel is brilliant. We learn by doing eh? That rubber turned to hardened goo is a thing the engineers of the period may not have foreseen or had nothing better to use.
    Back in the late 60's I worked after school and on Saturday's as a phonograph repair technician. Trouble shooting and repairing both the turntable and the electronics The occasional tape deck came my way as well. We were also a warranty repair station for the Nation wide store Penny's and their branded Penncrest items. It was a fun job for sure, but I could make more money stocking shelves at the grocery store and so, I did that.

      I always cringe when I see a speed selector with a "neutral" position, since it's almost a certainty that it has been left switched off with the idler wheel engaged for long periods of time. In this case, with no "N" position and, presumably, the idler retracting with the machine switched off, I'd have expected the wheel to have fared better, but I guess there is always the possibility of it being stored in the "ON" position, or of the levers that retract the idler becoming disconnected. It's great to see someone with the means and will to make a well-made replacement; I could never make a wheel like that with the tools I've got around the house.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 4 года назад +1

      @@pcno2832 Probably one of the worst examples were some German Saba open-reel tape recorders from the 60s and 70s. The speeds were printed in white onto the dark grey speed selector while neutral was an absolutely tiny dot stamped into the aluminium face place. With the slider in the neutral position, both speeds show half on the slider, making most people think "That can't be right!". Since few people actually read the manual almost all those idlers have dents.
      If the dents aren't too deep you can sand them out. I recently got a seriously questionable early-80s compact stereo with an all-plastic record player that made the most terrible noises. I removed the idler, stuck an M4 screw through the bearing (that sort of fit), secured it with a nut, put it into my handheld drill on slow speed and wet-sanded the idler with 180 grit sandpaper until I could no longer feel the dent. Then I cleaned the idler, reinstalled it and it worked like new!

    Another great video David! The idler wheel is what it is. Size really does not matter so long it is big enough to drive the platter. The bearing oil should be thin! Sewing machine oil is what I used to use in the fifties and sixties.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  4 года назад

      Hi Roger, Yes, the size won't affect the speed but the diameter was too small to position it correctly between the spindle and the platter, the small size increase made a remarkable difference. Many years ago as an apprentice we used SAE 30 oil in sintered bronze bearings, I would have thought a light oil would be better but that's what we used, go figure 🤔🙂
