Man of many talents, now you can and electroplating to that long list, nice job Dave.
Hi Mack, a bit of a way to go with the plating but I was happy with my first attempt 🙂
looking so much better, actually the second colour really does suit it, great work, AGAIN
Hi Paul, thanks. The final colour was better for sure 👍🙂
Another great restoration project David. Your RUclips videos are some of the best in my opinion. Your a very skilled craftsmen and communicator.
Thank you very much Philip 👍😀
Yes, that does look better! The ability to rescue a bad stain job is what separates the men from the boys in woodworking. Great job, and thanks for showing us all the steps you take, including the ones that don't come out right. They're as instructive as your many successes have been.
Thanks SY. I'm happy to show the unsuccessful parts, it's part of the process 😄
David, your attention to detail is just superb! What a craftsman! Great restoration, you should be proud of your work.
Thanks Tom 😀
What a turn around that poor thing had one foot in the grave and now is back to better than new to serve many
more years of service Top Job David as always.
Thank you Nick 👍😀
I let out an audible "YAAAAAAS" during this video... had to explain to my family it was my approval of the new color. I'm a nerd. Great job on this!!
Hi Paul, that's funny 😄 thanks 🙂
I am so glad you changed the color, now it has a soft original presence to it. Well done. Thx for the time you shared with us.
Hi Bruce, it is my pleasure 😀
Another great restoration David. You have managed the impossible turning a heap of junk back into a showroom model. Excellent! I really am in awe of your craftsmanship and patience. By the way you were right about the colour. Keep safe and look forward to some more Radio Adventures!
Thanks Parlour Tunes. keep safe too 👍😀
David, another example of your craftsmanship - thank you for sharing
Hi Tony, thank YOU for watching 😀
An adventure it was, respect for your patience.
Thanks Herman 👍😀
Great job David. I am glad you went with the more Blond Wood Color it fits the period for most tabletops. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work. Joe
Thanks Joe 👍😀
Once again you do things i did not know could be easily done in a home workshop with normally available tools and equipment. Good of you to show us that stuff Dave. The old record player radio unit came out really nice too. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
Thanks Jeff. You can do some amazing stuff with what's laying around if you think about it 👍🙂
This project might have caused some sleepless night’s David, but I think it has been worth the effort. It has become a real beauty...👍👍
I was too tired to not sleep K W, this was a lot of work 😄 thanks 👍
Lovely stuff Dave. You've piqued my interest in trying some electroplating. Nice work!
Hi Derek, thank you. I was surprised the electroplating worked so well, imagine if I knew what I was doing 🙂
Yeah, I fancy at having a go at that as well.
Hi David. Once again a wonderful restoration. Don’t sell yourself short. You look anything but struggling!
Thanks mem stuff. This one was a struggle at times, I just edit out the parts when I'm crying 😄 Cheers!
Bravo! Looks very good and sounds great! Thanks for taking the time to share with the rest of us.
Hi Jim, it is my pleasure 😀
Love the :maniacal" perfectionism. . . . . . this world needs more of it! :-) Bravo!!
Haha... Thanks Mike 👍😀
Hi David. As always, you never disappoint. The electroplating was interesting and the mad scientist laughter was a plus. Bless you and your patience, the number of times that you stripped that cabinet and made adjustments was impressive. Bravo!
Thanks David. It was a bit Frankensteinish when it started bubbling 😄 Cheers!
This series of videos about stromberg carlson was fantastic, electric coat was amazing !!!!
Congratulations - Sao Paulo - Brazil
Hi Fernando, thank you 😀
"I was working in the lab, late one night, When my eyes beheld an eerie sight."
David, you're a "Mad Scientist!"
Just kidding. :-)
I'm impressed with all the talents you use on your projects.
Electronics, Radio, Carpentry, Painting, Chemistry, Video Editing, a little History, Humor (and family, with your little helpers)
Haha... Thanks Rick, it was fun seeing the reaction in the jar though. Thanks for your very kind comment 😀
The second color is perfect! Super craftsmanship as always. BTW, I had a phone call early, and when the video resumed, through my headphones came this sinister laughter! What a surprise. I immediately ran to a mirror, fully expecting to see fangs in the reflection! My adrenalin lowered afterwards... :) Thanks David for the difficult work.
Hi John, sorry to scare you like that 😄 Thank you 👍🙂
I admire your dedication to perfection! You are never afraid to try something new. Well done!
By the way you can use electrolysis to remove rust.
HI Tom, thanks. I have seen videos using electrolysis but haven't taken much notice, I had better check it out some more 🙂
@@DavidTipton101 I use to restore old flywheel engines and old tractors. I used it all the time works a treat.
@@tomcren59 OK, thanks Tom 👍🙂
Wow, the things they built when quality came first, performance was tweaked to the best and before cheap plastic and robot made cases were used to cut prices and quality went down to will it work, instead of make it sound great. Thanks for the wonderful video, I do so enjoy watching you do such quality work. I was once a gunsmith in my earlier days. Occasionally I would send a hand gun off to have it nickel platted. The center I sent it to was just down the road a few dozen miles and they were not normally doing guns but repairing bumpers and auto trim on older vehicles. The way they went about the processes was to first polish down the gun to bare metal then clean it using some acid dunk then they would copper plate the whole thing, polish the copper and again dunk to clean, then into the nickel tank and electro plate the copper with the nickel. According to the fellow who ran the place, nickel plated on copper better then on steel, and copper platting stuck to the steel much better then pure nickel. The folks who got their nickel platted revolvers back were very happy with the results and I could get it done at about half the price as other smiths at the time.
Hi Jerry, it's pretty common to copper plate first, I think they do it for chrome as well. A nice nickel plate is hard to beat 👍🙂
Quite a journey. Liked the ‘chemistry with Mr Tipton’. So pleased you changed the cabinet colour, it was all looking a bit too swan vesta with that red. Looks really nice now. Credit to you.
Thank you Gary 😀
Really 👍 like this 📻 radio. Didn't 👌 know you were going to do a part 4, but that's GREAT. I did 👍 like the cherrywood color it originally was, but I also became used to the second color you made it. 👍 Yes, it has the usual dial cord and dial light, but the speaker appears to be field coil. Sure wish this 🌎 world would go back to tube 📻 radios 👍 like this, even if the year is 2039, instead of 1939, such as if this 📻 radio is a 1939. Could then celebrate a hundred years of tube 📻 radio. Your friend, Jeff.
Hi Jeff, Tubes were lucky to have survived 50 years, most techknowlogies only last 10 to 20 years now, video, Cd's etc 🙂
Dave, I restore a lot of Heathkit Test Equipment & Tube Radio's. You *ALWAYS* give me ideas on how to repair your devices!
--
Nicer Color. Much better! Beautiful job!!!
Back when Heathkit came out with their first portable a.m. radio my sister got it for my 12th birthday. I hope you didn't have to work on that one I was just learning how to solder wasn't very good and only had a big heavy duty iron.
Thanks pi-duino, glad to help 👍🙂
That was a great restoration video. Loved every bit of your repairs. Really nice sounding and working piece of furniture you have now. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you LUCKYLARRY, you are very kind 🙂
Great one, again. Learnt a thing or two about plating, which I’ve never tried before. Thank you.
Hi EOaN, I learned a bit too, in fact the whole thing. It came out very well and might be handy in the future 👍🙂
You are the best Dave. Just enjoy watching you work your magic.
Thanks Comforter Spirit 😀
Really great restoration, bravo! You're one of my favourite youtubers at the moment, pure good quality uploads. Keep them coming David!
Thanks Manny 👍😀
Another beautiful job Dave. I always learn something from your techniques & skills (old, experimental & newly acquired!), so thank you.
Thank you standishgeezer 😀
Hi David. Greetings from the UK. That is seriously good work. I could believe the number of times you visited that veneer. It looks really good! A craftsman of the HIGHEST order.
Hi Martin in the UK. I still have to redo the top but it works very well, thanks Martin 😀
Loved the cackling for your experiment
Yeah, sorry, I went a bit Hollywood there 😄
Awesome job that plating will help out with a lot of other projects down the road.
Thanks Ripley Smith, I hope it will be helpful in the future 😀
Awesome as usual! Nice to see a radiogram getting the much needed love. Keep up!
Thanks Luigi, I will try 😀
So I watched the whole thing. I,m impressed with your commitment to excellence. I don,t know how you summon the patience and perseverence to redo things. If I had to strip off that first veneer, If I had to strip off that first finnish etc. I would just about cry. Or maybe a deep depression. But I think you did the right thing with the finish. It's beautiful! I kinda knewn there's always been radio repair guys. They were around even when my dad was young. Thats one thing, but I never heard of a phonograph repair guy. I remember phongraphs when I was growing up, but I never knew or heard of anyone that repaired them. Given that phonogaphs are now obsolete, your profession in this feild must be rare. You're really saving history and it's always a pleasure to see these things working and functioning as they used to.
Hi Tyrone, the cabinet gave me grief but I needed to persevere even if it takes a few tries. I think repair shops could do the record players as well. I did hear of a change over service back then where the faulty deck could be replaced with a serviced one. That was in the UK, I don't know if that happened in Australia. Thanks Tyrone 🙂
as ever David ... fantastic.... fascinating one this one!!!
Thanks Chris 😀
You’re a dedicated guy, Dave. I’m always looking forward to your weekly videos!
Also, you should consider a Patreon page!
Thank you ljetronic 😀
Maybe, I'm not in it for the money but I do like chatting to people in the comments 😀
Excellent craftsmanship Dave.
Thank you Alan 👍🙂
You're an inspiration Dave! I was abandoning a difficult project of mine but thought of you and what you've done and removed it from the box and put it back on the bench. My results will never match yours but I'm determined to see it through. And, after seeing yours a few times through the videos, I'm tossing my old dingy white socks and getting new ones! )
Hi Allen. sometimes when I hit a wall I go and lament my troubles to my wife, she is great by the way, she will say "give it a break for a while" I come back later and attack the problem with renewed vigour. The thing is, take a break and come back later. More important than that: 'you must have whiter than white socks' 😄👍
David - wonderful job. Always something new to see - nickel plating this time. You are such a perfectionist - hard to believe that you are going to yet again strip the veneer from the lid. Your speaker repairs looked like they went much smoother than the last speaker repairs you showed. Well done - never apologize for the little humor skits. Keep smiling.
Yep the veneer is coming off again. I need to get it right even if only for future projects. I've done a few speaker repairs now and getting the hang of it 👍😀
Another fantastic restoration and the colour change was a good move .
Hi Shane, thank you and I agree 😀
Loved it Dave.. Love to watch you take a piece of history and return it to a treasure! Well Done !!
Thanks Le 👍🙂
Amazing result once again, Dave. I'm worried about your teeth though. In this project you bit the bullet at least a couple of times and bullets can be pretty hard.
Thanks Horatio Hornblower. It OK, I have dental insurance 👍😄
David is an artist!
Thanks PBR 😀
That turned out great! I like the record changer in that one.
Thanks Mike 👍😀
Spectacular David,I'm glad you decided to move away from mahogany to the walnut which is a much better choice of colour, nice speaker repair and well done with the electroplating, another great video mate,
Thanks Mick, the colour was Oak in the end, it's a bit lighter than my normal walnut 👍😀
"Five coats"? Geez, she'd be very warm in Winter! LOL😁😁
🙂
@@DavidTipton101 Top it off with a jacket and sweat will pour off that radiogram! LOL😁
I really appreciate, how you go to the trouble of making things right, rather than just settling for something you are not happy with.......the end results are always superb....... I really liked the plating demo........I silver plate a lot of stuff, but have not plated anything else yet.
Silver plating sounds expensive, I want to have a go at zinc. I do like to see things done right, it haunts me if it isn't, I don't know if that's a good thing or not 🤔🙂
@@DavidTipton101 Its not to bad........I got a big lump of silver from a jeweller a few years back.....still have most of it......I use it on Big Valve sockets and various RF stuff......must to a video when I get back online with my channel.
I think its a good thing.......I am the same.....I don't care if its not visible.....I know its there !!
Hi Dave I’m so in awe of your cabinet skills. Yes that mahogany stain, in the past I tried using it and it was always too irriescent red. I admire your patience
Hi Robert, thank you. I think if I had persevered it might have looked alright but I agree, it is just too bright 🙂
Good job Dave. I like your tea bag repair.
Thanks John. Tea, is there anything it can't do 👍🙂
Greetings from Luxembourg! Excellent work! Thanks.
Thanks Neil from Luxembourg 👍😀
I’m sure this looks at least as good as new, good job!
Thanks W Rex 😀
Your struggle was well worth it Dave. I love the result and this color is much better than the red. I wouldn't bother with the lid, but I guess you want it 'pretty good'. :) I enjoyed this series. Thanks for taking the effort to make it and post it to RUclips!
Hi Rene, thank you. It looks good in the new colour. I will have to redo the lid because I want it to look good and I need to work out the best way to do it for future jobs. Thanks for your support Rene 👍🙂
Awesome attention to detail. Nice restore!
Thanks Jeff 😀
Superb work again Dave.. I'm so glad you lightened the colour.. The first colour reminded , (not in a good way !), of the better half's 'cello' . Fortunately it's a phase that has ended, along with me trading it in against a American Chet Atkins Gretsch 6120 which is a nice shade of orange that is slightly lighter than of their President. We have a heat wave here in Blighty and you could fry an egg on the windowsill. A perfect excuse for the old codger I am to stay safe indoors and watch your video..I'm and Englishman but don't have a 'mad' dog just a.... ...No I'd better not say it !
Aww... that was nice buying your wife a Chet Atkins Gretsch 6120 guitar to replace her cello, even if it was yellowish 👍😄 By hot I guess you mean it's over 80 F in Old Blighty, that would be hot 🙄 You were wise to cut your last remark short, I don't know what you were going to say but it may have ended with a rolling pin I'm guessing. Stay safe and stay inside Pete 🙂
Very nice. Learning lots from your videos, thank you!
Thanks Lockdown Electronics 😀
What a good watch, love the colour change, and a hahahahahaha, cheers
Ha ha... thanks Martin 👍😄
Second color does look much better. Nice series 👌
Thanks Daniel 😀
Beautiful restoration David!
Thanks Paul 🙂
Wonderful restoration David! We enjoy every project you take on. The electroplating was fascinating and worked out very well.
Thanks Mary, I was surprised and delighted with my first attempt at plating 😀
Fantastic job and the colour is excellent!
Thanks ethicalfarmer 😀
Excellent as ever and never be sorry, but always be you! All the best my friend
Thanks Red Shutter Photography 👍🙂
Great video & great result Dave. Better than new. Cheers.
Thanks John 😀
Outstanding! Brilliant work. Sir! 👏👏👍
Thank you zuke1224 👍😀
Well done David, yet another great video.
Many thanks.
Take care and stay safe
Thanks Trevor, stay self yourself 👍🙂
What a great resurrection. Tea bag for speaker cone repair sounds good. I've used coffee filter paper in the past. Much prefer the honey color to the red.
(That Parlophone record of Elizabethan Serenade reminds me of the one my mother had by the Ron Goodwin Orchestra.)
Hi James, thank you. I don't have coffee filters so a tea bag seemed a good option. I remember my old Dad just sitting on the lounge on a Sunday afternoon listing to the Elizabethan Serenade (among others) and that's what came back to me when this song started. It's amazing how music reminds us of a certain time, I hope it was a good memory of your Mum 🙂
Wonderfull and soooo interesting, very, very good Job. Milling,Woodwork etc., you can all !!👏👏
Thank you Arnie 🙂
You saved it! I hated that redish color and I was waiting to see if David was going to disappoint me for the first time. Well you didn't, it looks great (and a period correct now) BRAVO! And the sound is amazing for such a small speaker! Perhaps a chamfer on the hinge screws so they fit flush and maybe a bit more lacquer on the front so the transfer edge is hidden. Perfection is just a few steps away!
Thank you Nicholas. I'm glad I changed the colour, it looks much better. The sound is adequate is all I'll say. The hinges needed to be countersunk more but I kept them as they were originally. I have to come up with a better transfer option, I'm still working on that 😀
_David, I can't believe it. You need to get the Nobel Prize for work and deed. I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart_
Haha... if there is such a Nobel prize I want it 😄 Cheers D. Ilic and thank you 😀
A really nice job David well done mate..................................................Berni
Thanks Berni 🙂
Gosh you are a perfectionist! Fancy veneering it three times! I could see a little ripple on that bend, but wondered why it wasn't sanded out before staining.
Hi Samuel, it's a long story. the veneer looked good to start with, when I applied the finish to it it started to ripple, I noticed the veneer had not glued down properly in some small areas on the bend. I stripped off the red lacquer and ironed the veneer down and it seemed to stick again. I sanded it flat and it rippled again when I applied the finish the second time and that's how it stayed 🤦♂️🙄😯
Amazing restoration congratulation !!
Thank you Andrzej 😀
Ahh, that color is more like what I had in mind. I can’t believe you are going to take the veneer off the cover again. Very enjoyable video. Good luck with the future alterations.
Hi Phillip, I can't believe it either but it has to be done. Thanks Phillip 👍🙂
Superb mate.
Thanks Joker68 😀
Wonderful job. Looks great and sounds great. 😁👍
Thanks Phil 👍🙂
Wonderful work and a pleasure to watch.
Thanks RRW 👍😀
Good choice changing the case color that red was too much!
Yes, it didn't work as I had hoped Doug, oh well 😀
Superb job, good choice to change the colour it did look much better in the brown. I just started nickel plating also, restoring a vintage motorbike, wish I started playing years ago. I find keeping the amps low and leaving the parts in longer gives better results, polishes really well.
Hi PPX thank you. That was the general opinion online, low current for a longer period. I have a way to go yet 😀
Excellent video well done top job top man thank you for your time 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks Phil 🦘🦘🦘
Stunning finish Dave ,it looked like its just has came fresh from the factory , The lighter color gave its admired look ,I also have yet to try nickel plating so watching you has inspired me to give it a go , i have also have seen it done with stainless steel on a IF can and it came up like chrome .Well done and a big pat on the back for excellent s ,
Hi Dave, The main unit looks really good and the colour is good to. I could give stainless steel plating a go but I'll have to wait till the wife goes out to get to the cutlery. Thanks for the pat on the back 😄
For reproducing old lettering I've grown really fond of Inkscape's "Redraw Bitmap" function. It'll turn any old scan into a vector image (clean black & white) that you can scale pretty much indefinitely and print in perfect quality (or engrave on a laser cutter or cut on a vinyl plotter). If you zoom in and spend some time tweaking the letters you can even edit out any imperfections. It should work great on the clear plastic, probably not so much on the logo from the case because that's very low contrast against the dark timber but it might even be possible to get that vectorised.
That way you get an absolutely perfect copy of the original font!
HI Ragnar8504, thanks for that information. The bigger problem is getting it from the PC onto a legible high contrast platform 🤔
Beautiful work as always. Thank you
Thank you Suhayl 🙂
Hi David. Another great result as per usual. It may have benefited from are larger or better speaker if space had permitted. Your final choice of colour/finish looks a lot better. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this series and can't wait to see your next project. Cheers Chris.
Hi Chris, thank you. There is absolutely no room for a bigger speaker, I tried. It would have helped a lot 🙄🙂
Fantastic David thanks for sharing!
Thank you James 😀
Like the new color. Awesome job.
I think I remember to have seen somebody somewhere some unknown number of years ago......... used steam to bend wood like this since moist will soften it up.
Thanks migsven surfing. I will explore pre-bending it next time and steam was one thought I had 👍🙂
It is looking good David. I thought the speaker was to far gone to bother with, but just shows how it can be recovered. Yeah, the speaker could have been better, but that was as good as it got back in the day. A modern speaker today would produce a much better sound for its size, but then you are into making things restored as they were. nice one, not as dark as I remember my relatives one, but then how many coats of polish was on top of the original finish! I like it, strange as it is, it was odd in the first place and I had only even seen one before, but it turned out nice.
Hi Bob, thanks. It should have been darker but I wanted to try a lighter colour and it looks pretty good in the flesh. I was going to replace the speaker but it was in very good condition apart from the cone so decided to give it a go 🙂
@@DavidTipton101 Nothing wrong in giving things a go. It turned out fine, but you can get a better quality sound from a more modern speaker. Always good to see you trying something new like electroplating.
@@BoB4jjjjs Thanks Bob
Perfect work and excellent job.
Thank you Ahmed 😀
Great work once again, David! The brown colour really does suit it better, my hat is off to you for actually changing it so late in the build. I probably would've kept the red shade despite it bothering me, but thankfully you are more of a perfectionist than I am. :)
Hi Bumper3D, thank you. Yeah, I couldn't the the red to look good so it was the best choice in the end 🙂
Fantastic results! It has a great period look to it, and I think you choose the right color for it in the end. :)
Thanks Brian, agreed 👍🙂
Wow, nice job on the plating. i might have to try some on a project. Stay safe and take care.
Thanks John, it came out better than I expected. All the best 😀
Superb work..... love it......🙂👍
Thanks Manajo, take care 😀
Beautiful work, looks like new
Thanks wickedxe 😀
Wow !
It not only looks great but also sounds great. Nickleplating is a nice touch. And I think you are quite happy with the 3D printer.
Stay well, and best regards from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Nard
Hi Nard, Most of it came up very nice and the records sound quite natural. The 3D printer is very good when I need something 👍😀
Love it. You right about color too!
Hi george, I think so too, thanks 🙂
Really nice stuff, Dave. It looks great.
Hi Fibber's Closet, thank you 😀
What a pity you can only give one like! This episode is worth more. Never seen such a speaker repair before. And then, the nickel plating. David, you really care for originality! And, eventually, you decided you don't like the color. Tell you what: I didn't like it, too. Ten thumbs up!
Thanks for the 10 thumbs up Otto. Sounds like a lot of people didn't like the colour 😄
It's a beautiful work...
Thanks Valdir 😀
Amazing! Thanks a lot for share and teach.
Thank you Lori, my pleasure 👍🙂
