  • A Loewe Opta Meteor 1781W that has been dropped. I was asked by a friend if I could repair it. The case is broken after being dropped but he said it worked. When I try it I am disappointed to find not everything is working as it should. This is going to be a bigger job than I thought!

    Wow ! That was fascinating and relaxing to watch. Now that i'm actually working on a radio myself, i understand so much more everything you are doing. The winding machine is just great and for somebody like you it's money well spent. I've seen a few other videos of guys working on similar German radios who were just as surprised to discover s selenium rectifier in a ''capacitor can'' format. One of them almost never figured it out in fact :-). Can't wait for part 2 to come out, i'm especially curious to see what you are going to do with the damaged corner.

    Respect, good recovery from egg-on-face (desk, schematic). There looked to be a lot of vibration when winding (some to be expected, but the table looked to be joining in the fun). You can use a step drill instead of a hole saw, if you use it in a drill press you should end up not having to file, he says, confidently.

    • @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
      @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 Год назад

      The bouncy table might well be why gaps were developing in the windings. Something to add mass to the whole setup (like stone? cementing flagstones to the top of the table?) could get that issue sorted.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Год назад

      The table is quite solid, the camera was shaking a bit. The problem with drilling the hole was that it was off centre to the original hole. I used the piece of wood to create a new off centre pilot hole 🙂

Really impressed that you have the patience and tenacity repairing these old vacuum models to rewind transformers and coils. I try to adapt similar transformers from basket cases before I shelve it (for Ron) or calling the radio i am working on a basket case. Nice work and looking forward to the next part of this restore.

    Thank goodness the mains transformer on mine worked as that would have been a total show-stopper for me. I chose to restuff the rectifier (and dual electrolytic) so I needed a dropping resistor as well and also a mains dropping resistor to get the filament voltage right as it's 240V plus here.
    I had to totally strip and refinish my cabinet which was terribly faded but at least the veneer was in good condition. I also dyed the grill cloth in place (it was too well glued down to remove) using a Procion MX gold dye. Very scary to do but it came out well - if you're tempted then test first as it's very easy to overdo the colour.
    If you haven't spotted it already then there's a bandpass function built into the volume pot (push/pull) which you'll need account for during AM alignment. But it's great to see you've finally been able to tackle this radio and to hear that your health issues are behind you. I'm looking forward to Part 2. Thanks for sharing.

    A little tip that I dont know if you've heard of. but if you want an environmentally friendly way to remove rust, mix molasses with water in a 9-1 ratio. let the parts soak in it for about a week if you have the time, then just give them a good scrub and they'll come up nice and clean, especially if they only have minor rust.

    Few notes: leaky paper capacitors always read high on DMM or similar cap tester. Tester is measuring the time to charge the cap, and the time is now longer due to leakage. You should get a leakage tester (insulation tester) to be sure, good cap will read OL on such tester (more than 1000 gigaohms). I replace them on sight, except for really special cases (like a tone cap with shield that has 0V DC on both sides).
    Small value electrolytic caps: I usually put leave them in place, but disconnect the + side (the one that isn't grounded) and keep it for the looks. I install a new small capacitor underneath, so that some of the originality is preserved, and the capacitor body acts a bit as a grounding shield. Also the tolerance for those old ones were -20%/+50% or even +100% at some cases. But the main problem is leakage current. Those caps are usually in high impedance circuits and even 0.1-0.2 mA leakage current can be too much. So I do 3 tests on caps: 1. capacitance, 2. ESR, 3. leakage current at close to rated voltage.
    Just my 2 cents. Btw really liked your transformer winding :) I'm sure this radio will end up even better than it was from the factory

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Год назад

      Thanks for the notes @michvod. I was aware of most of them. I have a megger and do use it to test caps, I don't usually bother as I replace them anyway. Interesting idea to hid smaller new cap under the old ones. The winding was interesting. I hope to get better as I do more 👍🙂

    • @michvod
      @michvod Год назад +1

      @@DavidTipton101 Yeah, I love that winding machine, and your skills. Yeah burned transformers aren't fun. For the caps, I try to preserve as much of the originality, so leaving the old components in, of course disconnected is always a consideration. I also restuff paper capacitors sometimes, but only on rare radios.

    3D immitates a concertroom. You have the complete nf spectrum from the front and the two room walls in the left and right reflects only a part of the nf spectrum. The higher frequecies.
    Remark: If a neighbor cranks up the loudness you hear the loud bass conducted by the walls of the building. Same with a car, you hear a loud bass outside.

    Looks like someone's worked on the radio in the not too distant past, one of the valves says "Made in Russia" and those green caps look fairly recent as well. The originals were probably all ERO100 paper caps. Roederstein (now part of Vishay-Roederstein) was a well-known manufacturer but paper caps are no good after 50-odd years, no matter who made them. They also had a bit of bad luck with their electrolytics in the 80s and early 90s. Older Roederstein caps are usually labelled ERO or Roederstein, later ones (early 80s onwards) are labelled ROE. If I remember correctly that logotype change occurred when the owner's son took over the company.
    Top job on that transformer!

      Thanks @Ragnar8504. I replaced the valve, the owner sent a set of NOS valves with the set so I fitted them after I rewound the transformer. One of the new valves caused distortion in the FM 🙄🙂

    Stay well David. It's always nice to see that the exceptional build quality of those 50's era German radios is still appreciated all over the globe.
    The transformer is faulty because of a wrong setting in the voltage selector, I guess (240V vs. 220V spec.). We can make do with the original transformer here in Europe without problems, even after all those years.
    Don't hesitate to ask European enthusiasts for more antiquities, we can still pull those old radios from the junkyard on a regular basis, if you can pay for shipment :)

    the reason the number of turns on the filament isn't enough, is most likely due to the wire resistance. 0.02 ohms/meter for the 1.03mm wire or thereabouts. I am not sure how many meters are on there but it looked like a decent amount.

    Great job with rewinding that transformer Dave.
    Looks like the winding machine has issues with feeding the wire straight.
    Could it be the wire slipping sideways in the feeder/tensioner as it moves back and forth?
    It would probably also need to tension the wire as much as it could without breaking the wire.
    But again great result being your first attempt, the second suck of the sav will be even better 😊

    Thanks David, I have been waiting for this and it turns out, unexpected... You must have a lovely wife... Nice winding machine and I think if you sort out a holding for the wire-spool it works as a dream. My machine I buildt have 2 axles, one for the bobbin and one for the the spool and 3 tension rolls between that i thought should let the wire walk over the winding, and it sort of doing that if the wire is over 0.5mm, otherwise it needs a little help but I have time when it does 32rpm flatout.... I also have a velleman counter which have a output to manage a relay so I can set the numbers of turns and it stops. It is nice to now that a blown transformer isn't the end of the road.
    A question, you isolated the laminations, is it necessary? I have used transformers out of old batterychargers and there they have put all E:s from one end and I:s from the other and weld it together, not so isolated...
    Thanks again for the insporation to build the winding machine, it have really helped to get it done.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Год назад

      Hi Leif, thank you. My wife is wonderful 😘 Well done making your own winder, I will run mine slower next time, there is no hurry. The laminations are insulated to limit eddy currents forming. The eddy currents oppose the building and collapsing of the AC magnetic field. For a power transformer the 'E's and 'I's should be staggered. In a output audio transformer the 'E's and 'I's should be laid as you describe but an insulation paper between the end of the 'E's and side of the 'I's 🙂

    What sort of varnish did you use to impregnate the windings? I have used a clear electrical varnish which is dissolved in a solvent, I guess xylene from the smell. I apply to each layer with a brush, allow to dry, add another coat, allow to dry, then a layer of Croyfilm before winding the next layer. Very time consuming, and there will be voids which reduce thermal conductivity. Is your varnish a two part one that doesn't need to evaporate the solvent?
    I use the Croyfilm to provide insulation between layers and reduce mechanical stresses on the wire insulation. I wind by hand, which is very time consuming but you get a neat result, no overlapping turns, again less mechanical stress on wire insulation.
    I don't bother cleaning off rust because the rust is a good insulator. It doesn't look half as good as your nice shiny laminations though, and I guess in a damp environment mine would continue to rust whereas yours is protected.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  11 месяцев назад

      It was an solvent based insulation coating. It is available in clear as well. I don't have access to it at the moment to check. It sounds like you go to more trouble than I do 😄 Yes the rust will insulate, I don't usually clean them that much but these were pretty bad.

    Reading all the comments about starting your own transformer winding business, most of them are joking of course but the reality is that there are very few transformer winders around now who will deal with small units like these. Most of the companies that do transformers are more on the industrial side and charge quite a bit to do small transformers.
    Over this side of the ditch in NZ I know of only one chap who is still winding transformers and he's getting on a bit. Eventually he will pass on and there will be one less option for getting them done. I have encouraged a young chap who is surprisingly skilled in electronic repair (he's only 17) to look at learning the art of transformer winding as it will serve him well for the rest of his life and provide a little extra income on the side.
