I have to keep reminding myself that you're entering into autumn there, David! 5:47 Here in Arizona 🌵we're wrapping up our wonderful winter/early spring season and progressing towards Hell aka 'summer' 🥵😈🤣
I bet it gets hot there John. Here in Melbourne the wind blows across the desert and heats us up to over 40C (100F +) some days. I live in Queensland so summer is more in the low 30C but can be humid 🙄🙂
I have a Phillips radio I picked up at an antiques markets at Pt Adelaide in South Aus where I live a few years ago, very similar design to this, except it has a plain speaker grille with no bars going across like this one, other than that, the knobs are exactly the same, and the cabinets aren't that different. mine is in perfect working condition, and has a beautiful sound and tone too like you say.
There were a number of slight design changes with these radios, I have two others at home which are the same radio with different cabinets, all with the same knobs though. They do sound good 👍🙂
Hi David. Great seeing you enjoying a Bishop's Finger over there! On a cautionary note you probably know care needs to be taken when using abrasives on bakelite due to asbestos commonly having been used within it. Only in later years and as countries became aware of the hazards was its use eventually phased out in bakelite production.
What a coincidence, its about 37* in Colorado (USA) also... well 37* F not C ;) Ive never been south of the equator so its strange to think that in February it could be 98*F (37*C) Cheers and thank you for the video even if its a teaser, I appreciate you putting these videos together even though you are obviously preoccupied with more important things than entertaining us.
@DavidTipton101 it's amazing how the US clings to the imperial system of inches and Fahrenheit. My brain works in imperial then after a hiccup it converts to metric. My wife refuses to learn the metric system so I know how 80% of the population in the US is thinking. As an HVAC service tech and mechanic, I wish we would just rip that band-aid off and convert to metric. My wife already thinks it's cold in the house though, if we changed the thermostats to Celsius she'd accuse me of freezing her out 😁
@@mrbyamile6973 I remember a push in the US to convert to metric many years ago it was eventually defeated. A pity really as metric is far easier to use. I bet your wife struggle to set the thermostat to 21C 😄
Nice radios - the homebuilt one is interesting in terms of construction and performance, I think. And the one with the wooden case, once restored, should be something else. Your woodworking skills are very impressive and I'd love to see how you restore that.
Hi David, those Mullards and the Philips equivalent perform well, but for some reason the Mullard cases go bad, The old shoe polish usually works! At least the dial glass isn't broken - they usually are. Should be easy to reproduce. Funny I've been fixing a Swedish made Philips this afternoon. Your Swed looks to have Philips knobs, I don't suppose you'll still be here next Sunday (7 April 2024) as we are having a big auction (250 items) you are welcome to come along.
Hi Andrew, is that so? OK. This one had deteriorated quite badly. The Swedish radio is actually Swiss, I said the wrong thing. I don't know if we will be here, we hoped to move on during the week and visit relatives on the way home, if we are here I will see if I'm allowed to attend the meet 🙂
I have seen Mullard tubes but never saw a Mullard radio before. You are roasting and we are freezing here it is currently snowing once again with temps below 32 F
Hello Larry, Mullard were based in the UK and were wholly owned by Philips. They were one of the biggest valve manufacturers in Europe so it's no wonder they were known for they valves and not radios outside of the UK. This radio is a rebadged Philips Australia. This is typical Melbourne weather, hot winds from the desert push temps over 104F then the wind swings around and comes across the bay and the temp drop 60F in 15 minutes. It's very uncomfortably hot then uncomfortably cold 🙄🙂
I used to drink in a Shepherd Neame pub when I worked in London 20 years ago before moving to Perth. They make some excellent beers and I've got a bottle of Bishops Finger ready to go in the cupboard.
2 old working radios out of 3 ain't a bad score, granted they might not look as nice as other projects you've done or have on the back burner, but personally i'd really like to see what you would do to improve the Mullard's Bakelite finish. As you know i had issues with a Grundig bakelite cabinet recently, so i would more than welcome the knowledge. Nice to see the workshop clean out is done although it meant you had to work on cardboard boxes... Have a great day, hope the house sells quickly, thank's for the video Dave 🙂
Hello Raymond. I might attempt the Mullard case just to see if it can be restored. As a radio, it wouldn't be worth much so I wouldn't sink too much time into it. They are nice radios to listen to though. Thanks Raymond 👍🙂

@@DavidTipton101 I knew that. Suspect you were trying to rile up the viewers. I,ll bet a light sanding and clear lacquer would bring back that cabinet. A clear water transfer decal printed reversed and placed inside the glass would fix dial. Once you figure out the process I can copy it.

and thanks for sharing the video
Replaced! thanks kahlid 👍🙂
Yeah Dave, I reckon take the Mullard home and bring it back to life! 😂 I love your work! Craig - Geelong 😎
Thanks Craig, suggestion noted 👍🙂
Thanks, Dave!
Thanks Shannon 🙂
Have fun David !
Thanks Andrew 🙂
5 AM here in UK and I am the First !!!! Hello David great channel 'Bishops Finger's' get everywhere, I prefer 'Old Speckled Hen'
10 PM Seattle USA. Guess I am the second. Love the channel
🥇 Well done Woffy 😄 I did get some Old Speckled Hen here a few years ago.
Oh David, I think yo can get some cream for that !. Love you style and humour and have learn't at the same time. I hope all goes well with the move, it is emotionally draining take it at your pace. Must go as I have a 'Hungry Badger' here Cheers. Best from G8WOF Wirral UK. @@DavidTipton101
Theres life in it yet, Sounds great 👍
They are a good sounding radio Baron👍🙂
@@DavidTipton101 please clean off the dust from the chassis of the radio you are working on.
Hi David, hope everything goes smooth with the sale. Mullard made some fantastic tubes (valves). Take care.
Thanks James, take care 🙂
That's good point Gerard, I will be careful if I attempt to sand it back, thanks 👍🙂
Nice video Dave!
Thanks Gregg 😃
What a coincidence, its about 37* in Colorado (USA) also... well 37* F not C ;) Ive never been south of the equator so its strange to think that in February it could be 98*F (37*C) Cheers and thank you for the video even if its a teaser, I appreciate you putting these videos together even though you are obviously preoccupied with more important things than entertaining us.
Haha... you had me going there Mr Byamile. 37 in Colorado in March 😄
Thank you Mr Byamile and it's my pleasure of course 🙂
Interesting update David - thanks a lot. How about inkjet-printable waterslide transfer for the Mullard dial?
Thanks berniestep. The waterslide transfers don't work, the ink is too faint 🤔🙂
That's one of my favourite beers
Yep, a nice beer all right 🙂
Nice radios - the homebuilt one is interesting in terms of construction and performance, I think. And the one with the wooden case, once restored, should be something else. Your woodworking skills are very impressive and I'd love to see how you restore that.
The wooden one should look good, I'm quite keen to restore it 🙂
Dave: "I've gone full Shango here..." - radiotvphononut would approve.
Haha... he would too. Thanks RoughJustice 😄
good show
Thanks JE 🙂
I reckon it's a keeper.
Noted, thanks stumpydog87 🙂
Hi David, those Mullards and the Philips equivalent perform well, but for some reason the Mullard cases go bad, The old shoe polish usually works! At least the dial glass isn't broken - they usually are. Should be easy to reproduce. Funny I've been fixing a Swedish made Philips this afternoon. Your Swed looks to have Philips knobs,
I don't suppose you'll still be here next Sunday (7 April 2024) as we are having a big auction (250 items) you are welcome to come along.
Thanks for the explanation David. I know you will have a great day@@DavidTipton101
Fresh off the press David. There's nothing like a Bishops Finger! Thanks for the quicky David.
Yeah, it was very nice Antony, perfect for a hot day 😀
Hi David, it was fun to se a Swedish radio I did not know of. I think you can do something nice with dem. Greetings from Sweden.👍👍
It's not Swedish, it's from switzerland men bra ändå.
My fault Claes, it's from Switzerland. I said the wrong country 🙄🙂
Hope your Having a Great Relaxing Holiday...
Yeah, not so much relaxing but a nice break from normal life 🙂
No hum? You just know I'm going to say this...... The set knows all the words to the song! LOL😁
@neilforbes in a radio announcers style voice Yes Neil Welcome to *Name That Tune.* 😀
🙂
"have it warm over there".
***shakes head sadly in British ***
You have it at room or cellar temperature, meaning it's not chilled. If we did that here is would be over 20C 🙂
I used to drink in a Shepherd Neame pub when I worked in London 20 years ago before moving to Perth. They make some excellent beers and I've got a bottle of Bishops Finger ready to go in the cupboard.
I looked for the finger for ages, it suddenly showed up at Dan Murphys so I grabbed a bottle 🙂
Take it home David
It's coming home, whether I do anything with it is the question 👍🙂
Come on David, bring it back to QLD and do your very good high quality work on it! Interesting video mate, thanks!
OK, I'll count that as a yes 👍🙂
I reckon its definitely worth restoring
Noted, thanks Cam 👍🙂

Ok Olen, sounds like a plan 👍🙂
There's nothing like having a Guinness in a pub less than a Km from where it was brewed.
I had a couple at the brewery on a tour 🙂
Thanks for keeping us in the loop Dave! When do you reckon you'll be leaving "Mexico" & returning home to QLD?
Thanks Geoff. We will be heading home in a week or two or three. We both have Covid at the moment 🙄
Hi 👋 David
Hi Haytham 👋
I think that you should give a chance to the Mullard also. Thanks.
OK, thanks radiosantigos 👍🙂
I like it when you work on the American radios, A good challenge would be a zenith h725,b835,c845 the later 2 have fm afc, anyways the last 3 of the 4 I worked on had silver mica disease.
I haven't seen a American radio with FM yet, it would be a fun project. Thanks Rob 🙂
Greetings from an old Tandy (Radio Shack)Engineer from Fort Worth. Please fix it and find it a good home.
Thanks John, I'll add your name to the list 👍🙂
Old Peculiar is also a nice drop.
I haven't heard of that one David 🙂
Miss my radio adventures. I hope YOU are feeling wiell. When are you going to be back home?
Thanks jmb874. We both have covid so waiting for that to pass then heading home 🙂
Hey, Mate. I thought you were still on holiday. A little content doesn't go amiss. My youtube didn't show it to me, I had to search the subscriptions to see the post.
Just back clasicradiolover. This video has been in my vault for 6 months 😊
“I’ve gone full Shango…” I think you need to be American to be able to do that 😂😂😂😂 His Americana related rants are what makes him a proper Shango 😂
Haha... I can't expect to be a true Shango 😄
The Paillard radio is made in Switzerland not Sweden ;-) by Paillard AG; St. Crox
Yes, sorry Lars. I misspoke 🙂
@@DavidTipton101 No worries you are not the first ;-) Usually its the Americans that make that mistake :-)

Those look like nice projects Would love a masterclass in bakeliet restauration as I have a very poor philips pancake speaker that could use a litte shine. Greetings for the Netherlands
It would be interesting to see if it can be bought back. Thanks Maarten 👍
The first transistor I bought in 1965 was a Mullard I paid 1 pound it was a OC71
A one pound radio, that's cheap even for then. OC71... that sounds like a transistor number 🙂
It was a transistor, as I said. I used it to make my crystal set louder. I was 10.
@@DavidTipton101
Ahh... got it 👍🙂
I have the same Mullard, the dial glass looks fantastic and it has 3 color. It is the highlight of this radio. Shame that yours isn't that good.
Hi Khaled, this may have been sold at a lower price point hence the single colour dial. At least it will be easier to replicate 😀
Yes take it home and fix it up a bit. Couldn’t you print off the lettering on some clear slide decal material for the dial glass?
Thanks mopar. I have tried waterslide transfers in the past and they don't work, the ikl is too faint 🙂
The size of the transformer in the homemade radio makes me wonder if it came from a TV. Think the Mullard is probably worth it
It is very big, bigger than the radio needs. It could be from a TV 👍🙂
No Radio left behind.........😮
No chance of that Vern 😄
@@DavidTipton101 I knew that. Suspect you were trying to rile up the viewers. I,ll bet a light sanding and clear lacquer would bring back that cabinet. A clear water transfer decal printed reversed and placed inside the glass would fix dial. Once you figure out the process I can copy it.
That was my thinking, sand and clear coat 👍🙂 I've tried water transfers but the text is too light. I did try putting a second transfer over the first one which helped but was very difficult to align accurately 🤔
@@DavidTipton101 David my friend, I know you will find a solution that I can Plagerize (SP?). Stay well, was so happy to see a video from your side.
