  • With a week under its belt I flush out the OSMO to find out if it really is all I thought it would be. It's a bit of bumpy ride but we make it there. Watch my thoughts to find out.

It can pan diagonally and multi-directionally with the app. Maybe a firmware update will allow the handle to pan the same way. It doesn't appear to be a mechanical limitation.

Diagonal pan can be achieved with your smartphone. Also it is important to have the tripod with the extender in order to get decent panorama shots.

That pano thing - storing it on your phone, but keeping the raw photos on the sd card - is weird. I agree, it's annoying. Did my head in trying to find the generated file, initially.

Would it be possible to fit a different filter that a standard lens cap can fit?

totally agree about the internal mic, it sounded terrible, but if they didn't include one people would cry.

I think there are more people now complaining that it doesn't work as advertised, then if they said it didn't include a mic. When you tell a customer that a product includes a item, they expect it to work... Right? DJI made such a big thing about that fact that I think many people expected to use the Osmo as an all-around solution and was very disappointed that they spent $650.00 for half of a video camera; you can't even get good sound plugging in an external mic. DJI shouldn't have released this thing until they knew the problem was fixed. Personally, I would recommend to people if you already have a GoPro, just buy one of those (under $300) gimbal sticks and use that, at least you know the audio will be good and you may already have a 4K camera to put on it.

+rwa96 It's only useful if you want to sync audio recorded off-camera.

Totally agree with that audio sync, hadn't thought about that

+Bobster986 An on board mic is always a compromise. My DSLR has one, but I always use an external mic. I have heard external Rode mics on the Osmo and it's very good sound.

I'm wondering if the Sony a5100 is better, only because I'm not really wanting the 4K but I still pay for the feature and a5100 has way better lowlight but the stability is on point so I'm conflicted. The intended use is going for vloging let me know your opinion?

I'll probably buy version 2. Could be less bulky and in the world of camera sensors a year is a long time.

a lot of people say thet in 4 K it overheats and you can clearly hear the fan in the mic , it is very contradicting

Internal mic would be used to sink to an external recorder in post best thing don't need to bring an extra mic! I am a pro and I will use it the client will never get the sound.

There's no way to fit a tablet in that holder, even a small one. Only with phones with up to 5.5 inch screens will work. Unfortunately I don't have a smartphone, so I'm having to manufacture one for my Shield tablet with Autodesk and a 3d printer.

Bang per buck. That's the deal with the Osmo. Bang per buck. Not that it's poor quality. Not that it's not "pro." Not that it doesn't do all the things you use a pro camera for. It's bang per buck.

  • @Bobster986

The worse part of the Osmo isn't that it has an internal mic, it's that the sound recording sucks! Even if you plug in an external mic, it still sounds badly muffled. This camera isn't a camera that could ever be used as a professional, all in one solution, or even a selfie cam, its uses are limited to only B-roll at best. DJI should have never released this until they had the BAD audio issue resolved, but I guess telling people it would be out in September, but didn't until October caused them a lot of imbarresment so they released it before they fix this problem. Poor business strategy... again.

Oh, I forgot to mention. The fan and gimbal motors can be heard too on the internal mic, killing any possibility to capture Nat-sound in a quite invirorment (like a wedding ceremony) On the plus side, you can move the camera diagonally by sliding your finger across your smart device screen.
