  • I checked all over the internet and could not find a good way to solve this issue so I made this video after I figured it out. IF you have the FE error, don't buy anything!!! clean your floats in about 30 minutes for free and most likely will solve your issue.

I _think_ I was able to drain the water from the bottom hose by running the “drain” / “cancel” feature before starting work: it runs the drain pump for 45 seconds and my hose was dry when I finally got it apart (although also full of gunk). On my model, that was holding “Normal” and “Delicate” for 3 seconds.
Thanks for the video, it was crucial in fixing our dishwasher today 🎉

Really helpful video. Often all we need is a little help. I’ve just completed this exact repair. The plastic body was so full of gunk that one of the floats was stuck. Since this was a dishwasher out of a rental apartment, I do not know if it was giving the previous users trouble. I am guessing it had to have given trouble given the amount of crud I removed. I’ve been cleaning this LG dishwasher prior to installing it into another apartment and just happened to spot the dirt inside this component. It caused me some concern so I started to dig into it more. At first I did not know the name of the part or it’s function. A few minutes on Mr. Internet and I had the direction I needed. Thank you for having posted this video. In Toronto, a new “float assembly costs $60.00.

Very well explained and simple fix for error code FE on my LG dishwasher. I found that my float tray and floats were caked in gunk. Removed, cleaned, and reinstalled in under 30 minutes. Thanks for saving me headache, hassle, and expense.

Thank you! My LG LDF7920WW recirculation pump was cavitating and I got no error codes. Figured out it just wasn’t filling enough water. So the inlet valve would fill for 70 seconds, but at 50 seconds, with inlet valve open, the drain pump would activate for 30 seconds. After each fill event, I would open the door and add a gallon of hot water from a jug. The dishwasher ran great. Pulled it out and my float assembly was black. Used your video as a guide to disassemble and clean the float assembly, ran dishwasher cleaner then a full load of actual dishes. My dishwasher now runs like it did when new - thanks to you!

Great, clear, useful video. Unclogged the float container which was completely packed with jelly-like goop. I also disconnected and cleaned the hose leading to it form the pump, which also had a lot of goop, I disconnected and cleaned the other plastic tank as well. The dishes now come out clean without little bits of dried stuff stuck to them. It hasn't worked this well in years. I wish the FE error had happened sooner and i had found your video sooner, Now I'll just keep those tanks and hose clean on a regular basis, like once a year.

That was exactly what the problem was with my LG dishwasher. I followed your video and it's working again. Not only did this save repair cost, but it saved the time with no dishwasher waiting for a repair appointment. The float assembly was full of gunk and the larger float was stuck. The intake hose was also clogged with that same gunk. It definitely needed to be cleaned. Thank you again!

Thank you sir. For those on the fence whether to tackle it, go for it. It’s not as hard or complicated as it looks on the video. My float assembly thing was absolutely filthy, I had some problems removing the cover but you just pry it with a screwdriver. Even though it seems you are removing quite a few parts everything is easily reattached. I hate calling repair people so I’m grateful for this video. Thanks.

Worked for me too. Thanks for sharing. The floats on mine were horrible shape. I ran into a leak issue on the reinstall. This was due to the gasket for the grate that attaches from the inside was a tad dry. I simply cleaned it really well and added some Vaseline to the gasket and the threads and it sealed right up.

Saved me a couple hundred bucks. Mine was absolutely filthy. Thanks a bunch!
Couple of tips for people in the future, i used a round brush to clean out the hose (it was filthy as well). When you are putting the float assembly back onto the hose, use a tiny bit of vasoline on the outside of the plastic part to slide the assembly back on with ease! Also, make sure the float assembly is level when putting it all back together. Mine was a little crooked and the larger float wasn’t rising as well as it should.

This is an excellent video. There are a lot of more complicated videos that totally miss this problem. I have had problems with FE errors for quite a while, mostly overcome by using the power scrub cycle, but even that has been failing lately. Checking the float chambers, they were much worse than this, with thick gooey gunk in both and all over both floats. 10 minutes with some Dawn, hot water and an old toothbrush got them all back to clean and functional. I also brushed out the pipe. All cycles work, no FE errors.

This video was awesome. Solved the FE error. The float assembly had a substantial amount of gunk after its 5+ years of use, and it definitely needed cleaned and washed out with soapy water, paper towel and Qtips. Of note: The hose clamp removal and reassembly was a bit awkward given its location, and care needed to be taken with removal of the top cap to the assembly and with the internal stick in the smaller float chamber.

THANK YOU!! Easy fix and now the LG is back to quiet operation. Dishwasher is only 4 years old and I did not want to buy a new one. The big white water-course that attached to the inside of the dishwasher was also full of gunk, and while not as easy to clean I was finally able to clear 95% of the gunk from it.

Thanks, this worked like a charm for my LG LDS5540ST dishwasher. Your instructions were very clear. It is just a little difficult getting the top off the plastic container that holds the floats; I found that gently prying the sides out and away from the top with a putty knife helped to let small protruding tabs on the top piece clear the retaining holes in the side. Again, thanks for sharing this great information!

Thank you so much for this video. You saved me several hundred dollars because I was just about to get a new dishwasher completely.
Our dishwasher is in the corner, near some cabinets and I thought I'd have to pull it out to work on it. Luckily, the cabinet doesn't have a wall on the inside and I was able to reach the parts necessary with the washer still in place. Your video was immensely helpful. For one, I'm pretty sure we have the same washer (LDS5540ST). Two, I couldn't *quite* see some things like the clip that holds the float switch assembly to the other piece but using your vid as a guide I made it happen.

This is a good how-to video, but I'd add that the vinyl seal ring for the fitting in the side of the tub (inside) is very thin, and the original in my machine wouldn't reseat on re-assembly and continued to leak even after I opened it up and tried to get it to seal. I recommend having a new replacement on hand. I also recommend doing a leak test before putting the dishwasher back in place.

I can not figure out what the clear sticky film is. Might be be chemical reaction from cascade and cooking and or baking sprays or olive oil. Alt Solution: Run your dishwasher on Power Scrub for 10 or so cycles for your next loads. No more FE Error on normal.
I had lots of FE errors and meant to pull my dishwasher out and fix it like the video shows but I found that it didn't error out when I used Power Scrub. After a while, I tried normal again and I haven't had an FE error in a long time.
I think what happens is by running Power Scrub you're filling that tank on the side full with water and washing any excess particles in the tank out. Just a guess though.
