you tackle the point very fairly: it may be a personal choice but if society pressures women to get expensive, altering procedures in order to gain employment, that's not really a choice, isn't it?
I had several East Asian friends in elementary school and I always thought their monolids were so cool. We are in our 40s now and none of them have monolids anymore.
I really hated when people would tell me I’m quiet or don’t talk enough and act like it’s helping when in fact it made me hide in my shell even more As I’ve gotten older the less I hear and worry about it but realize the people who said that to me were usually the loud never shutting up kind of people ….so comparing me to them yes I would agree I was quiet 😅
Looks like you came to realise you should be who you are and not let others dictate who they think you should be or how you should act. People need to acknowledge and respect others' differences . All the best.
The beauty standards in Korea are to another level of crazy. The extreme judgement and pressure put on people to look a certain way is very detrimental mentally. I’m happy that I live in Australia 😊
Me too. I'm not pretty but here in Australia guys check me out and it feels good to feel attractive. In Korea nobody really notices me there because I don't think I'm beautiful in their eyes.
lol living long term in Korea made me start hating makeup actually... I stopped wearing it other than maybe some bb cream entirely. I also stopped taking selfies. idk... I just started HATING it. the overkill, obsession, constant in-your-face with perfect, unrealistic beauty standards just ruined it all for me. now that I'm back in the US, I've started to enjoy it again. also... mirrors and reflective surfaces seemingly being EVERYWHERE... and everyone checking their hair making sure it looks perfect. I started going crazy and purposely messing up my and my fiance's hair, or going to cafes and taking ugly face double chin selfies in "retaliation" to how god damn ridiculous and over the top it all was. like damn people take a chill pill. haha he'd just laugh a lot on our dates btw... he said his friends growing up and in the military would make fun of him and call him the equivalent of the Korean "n-word" because his skin is slightly darker. PSHT. gross. I told him tell me where they are and I'll go after them haha. my weird Busan boy will be joining me on a visa in the US soon
The beauty standard seems so shallow and superficial! It’s very unrealistic! As, long as you look after yourself, try to stay healthy, look after skin, without this obsession with beauty! Dress well, but in your own style! We all have flaws! And are all beautiful! There is a pressure to be perfect, but that’s the insecurity, right there! We are all pretty, no matter what! Be your own beauty standard! Try not to compare yourself, to others and fall into the trap of feeling, like you need to change, yourself! Much love!💄💋😊☺️😊💋💄Mental wellbeing and health and happiness is more important, then trying to fit the beauty standards! Once we learn to be more accepting of ourselves! We pay no attention to those standards! We can be our own person not copy and paste of every other person, out, there! Like a robot! No thank you! 🤖You stay well!❤❤
I am a Filipino and knowing that South Koreans use "Filipino" as a derogatory term really stings, especially that during the Korean War, Filipino soldiers fought alongside South Koreans for their victory. 🤷♀️
thank you for being so vulnerable and honest with us. I would really like to know, are the beauty standards applied to both men and women? What about the more mature, do beauty standards ONLY apply to the young or are those who are middle aged and elderly also subjected to certain beauty standards? In other words, is it relentless or does it ease up some as you age?
would you say it's more difficult to practice body positivity or body neutrality in Korea due to the kind of "enforced" beauty standards that you were exposed go? since you say you felt somewhat pressured into it? I tend to lean more toward body neutrality since it helps me be thankful for what my body does for me everyday, but im curious if you'd say that there's more of a focus on the effect of your beauty in korean society. like what your looks can get you socially? this video was super eye opening! thanks for posting ❤
I'm so sorry you had to experience this as a mere child. 😔 That must of been hard, the mental anguish. I say the most beautiful thing anyone has, no matter what other things are not in "beauty standards", is A HUGE INFECTIOUS SMILE. ♥️
Recently finished watching true beauty and definitely got an idea how it is the pressure is real in every part of society but nonetheless we should love ourselves and do what our heart says
Girl when you said in the title pretty privilege I genuinely thought you were the one having the pretty privilege telling your experience on how Korea treats people like that! I’m so sorry for what happened to you cause I REALLY thought “ she is so pretty, she has this magnetic aura and her face gives me a sense of trust and friendly but confident ” seriously I don’t say that as a mere compliment but with a DEEP opinion of it that I subconsciously thought while watching the video. If you aren’t fitting in the kbs then what do they want 😭 I’m so sorry once again
waiting for ur next vid, fairy Sienna!! I have been an exchange student in Ajou University for 4 months and had some experience with Korea. Now I have applied to another Uni as a 3rd year transfer and I do not know whether I want to stay and work in Korea in future or not 😅 From what it seems to me now (probably because of this strong rivalry spirit aka 경쟁심) all koreans are super mature from a very young age and are surely super competitive! I am sort of a vulnerable person who doesn't like the ppallippalli culture, so I thought of living in South East Asia later on 😄 Would greatly appreciate if you noticed any difference between Korean and other Asia countries (like Singapore) and let us know💝
Beauty standards in Korea is pretty high up there. I had Korean friends especially in college days, many of them rich, and one of them would say they feel insecure everytime they go Korea because of the beauty standards. My friend is honestly so beautiful. She definitely has the looks no doubt about that. She has the tall nose, tall height, pale and clear skin, symmetrical face etc. I never understood the big deal until I did more research and got into Korean and East/South East Asian culture and Asian culture in general. In general, I find Korean people one of the most physically attractive ethnic groups of Asia and of East Asia. Also all Asians and all ethnic groups are all beautiful. What I have noticed is that those Koreans who are more westernized and living outside of Korea more likely don't emphasize on Korean beauty standards. Some don't care about skin care at all as what I have observed etc... I am Filipino with European ancestry, but I consider myself pure Filipino. I am proud of my fair skin to "morena" color when I am exposed to the sun. Some East Asian especially Korean men especially in my college days have asked me out on dates. Maybe they were just open minded and/or liked me for whatever reason. They said I was beautiful and kind and sweet girl. But I didn't date because I was too focused on my studies. Also I felt like I was being pressured by them to date them. And I don't like submitting to people who make me feel uncomfortable. I guess they really liked me. And some traditional ones have secretly admired me. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Every one is beautiful and including you. Never feel pressure to have beauty standards. You are already more than good and beautiful enough!
It’s not just Koreans but East Asians too and I was talking to someone online in Indonesia; a lot of people in Indonesia crave the celebrities in K pop industry so many are getting skin-bleaching treatments 😞but I sincerely think the Korean’look’ discourages individuality ( apologies in advance for stereotyping), instead there’s a narrow interpretation of what‘beauty’ truly is. It’s harmful towards the younger generation as they are more exposed to social media and will compare themselves to others
Honestly, it's absolutely nuts to me that plastic surgery is considered a normal thing to do in South Korea. Surgery is not normal. You're own body is normal. Plastic surgery is necessary for people who have been in accidents etc to help them recover from horrible eg burns. It is also possibly necessary for certain (few) individuals born with say a cleft palate. All the rest of this is nonsense and just leads to horrific outcomes in society. We're meant to look different. We're not meant to all be programmed to want to look like - and be required by society to go under the knife to actually achieve - whatever is the latest trend. I'm surprised it's so normalised in Korea. It's not a good discovery. I'm curious about scarring? And botched surgeries? And aging with all this work done - is more necessary as you get older because certain parts of your body don't age? I've heard if you get breast implants, you'll need to get them redone roughly every decade, and when you get them you're at risk of various issues, including puncture and infection. I really really wish plastic surgery would stop being offered cosmetically. Kids born of such altered parents won't realise where their looks come from! There won't be cool generational family photos. And it blew my mind that this gorgeous youtuber was covering this from the angle of "I wasn't pretty". Gurl, honey, from one listen of your content I can already tell you're the definition of beautiful - note I said one LISTEN. Your words show a beautiful soul, something that you've obviously always had. Damn, I wish I had been born physically beautiful, the world would be easier, but the "ideal" by plastic surgery is just so commercial and corrupt. I've heard the same is true in Brazil (maybe South America generally). I wish the world would stop this insanity. It's because it's available that it's considered acceptable. It shouldn't be available for cosmetic purposes. It's soul destroying. It amplifies the me/them mentality - "I'm not good enough, because look at all these (fake) people". Nek minute, AI says hold my beer! Also it is nuts that photos are required for job applications! Whether you can do a job has literally nothing to do with what you look like! Talk about discrimination! With love, from New Zealand.
This video for great, please make the second video that you talked about ( realistic expectations ). It’s gonna help me & others who are moving to Korea soon💕
You are far from ugly! I know society pressures, don’t help! But you are beautiful, regardless! ☺️☺️The word ugly, shouldn’t exist! No one is! We are all different!!💋💄😊😊
Thank you for sharing. You are lovely. I think this is sad. External beauty does not mean that person is beautiful inside or capable. What do people not born beautiful do? This is unkind pressure in my view.
who cares abt what other says abt u? they are not going to be the one deciding your future, your life... just live your own self and have self confidence and ignore all the negative things... u only live once so enjoy and make use of it properly for your own benefit and also for your love ones...
Honey, you're still yellow. There's nothing wrong with that. Humans with tan , yellow, brown and black skin are beautiful despite Asia's self hate. Love yourself.
In no way is this embarrassing herself. And people can speak on their experiences they’ve had in any country, whether good or bad. Hiding things does not make a problem go away.
I was that ugly awkward no friend type of kid. Didn’t know when i became “pretty” but now at 40 i still don’t feel comfortable when men stare or people complimenting me. I’ve never put any effort into my looks though beside taking care of my teeth & skin and taking daily bath. 🫣

I feel this same way, like wth do you expect us to say, we just don't wanna talk. I heard this the whole of high school
Looks like you came to realise you should be who you are and not let others dictate who they think you should be or how you should act. People need to acknowledge and respect others' differences . All the best.
Bully: 'You look like Cleopatra'
Me: 'Thanks 😂'
I’d make them treat me like a queen 😂✨ sprinkle sprinkle

It's not just Filipino. They look down on Southeast Asians. Any people with darker skin really.

coming back to give you a little more love and encouragement to talk about the hard topics. it matters!
Would you consider doing a video on the plastic surgeries you've had done?
Sure!

Just found your Chanel! I love your Videos, I wish I’d had a friend like you haha
Awe thank you so much ❤
i am so sorry this was your experience as a child, you’re beautiful on the inside and out. the beauty standards in korea are insane
You are so gorgeous. I would have hated growing up in that culture being so heavily criticized for my looks.

I’m so sorry once again
Sis you were never ugly 😮
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Easy to say if u don’t live in the country and your life can get affected by this…relationships, jobs, unfair treatment …pretty privilege is real
hi sis, i think it is common both in East Asia and South Asia.
Do women who are especially attractive get sexually harassed at the workplace or by customer at their job?
God made you beautiful 🥰
You are beautiful.
❤❤❤❤❤
I think you are stunning, but I think it's sad when people are judged by their looks to get a job. 😮
You are beautiful. Why would u even consider yourself to be any other way ?
from a western view you look great sister The Lord Jesus loves you.
Omg you’re the woman from TikTok
As an Asian whenever someone asks me if I’m Korean I take that as a compliment
🙄🙄
pretty privilege is everywhere
yep but in korea i just… another level
It is so sad and wrong that you give such an importance to appearance... 😢
Honey, you're still yellow. There's nothing wrong with that. Humans with tan , yellow, brown and black skin are beautiful despite Asia's self hate. Love yourself.
I know this was supposed to be a kind comment, but please don't call people yellow
I think Filipino are prettier than Korean, just saying
I’m Filipino and I think Koreans are prettier tbh
Too much surgery is not good...and imagine a gorgeous woman and handsome man that get ugly kids cause they were not naturally good looking 😅
why do you have to embarrass yourself and your country by making this video?
