It is a bit presumptuous to expect any country to monitor every bit social media and take it seriously, especially when a lot of it is very biased and toxic. If you want a country to change, you go through the proper channels. You can't expect your vlog to be considered newsworthy when it is really just an opinion.

it is sometimes! just... other times they aren't that accepting of you if you either don't want to engage (maybe you can't talk at that moment) or give answers that they don't expect... Eg: my friend is ethnically lebanese but is spanish (nationality) and they just fought her about it lmao... it was funny but it happened sooo many times my friend was obvi tired about it

I’m in Korea at the moment and yes on the social anxiety thing. So many people stare intensely and it makes me self conscious because I’m also tall for a girl and on the chubby side (with a complex about my weight) so I don’t know what aspect about me they are staring at. So it can make me a bit self conscious. But on the flip side there have also been so many wonderful people I’ve met and have made me feel so amazing and are super friendly and over accomodating to make us feel welcome ❤
@@tracy4jester Koreans stare at foreigners because foreigners stand out. They also stare at kids, pretty people, dressed-up people. If you are young and beautiful, old people will stare a lot. On the other hand, if you dont look good (I.e. looks like you are a homeless, handicapped, dressed weirdly ), they will try hard not to look at you so they do not offend you. My daughter is pretty, and when she dresses shabby, people don't stare at her much. When she dresses up (skirt, tidy hair), she gets a lot of stares, especially from old people. They like looking at pretty, interesting people 😅 They are not judging you. They are “amused” at people. Old Koreans tend to say “going out to get fresh air and watch people” because they do enjoy watching people when they are out. 😂 You can say to yourself “oh, people look at me. Am I that pretty today?” - That‘s the way young Korean girls think 😅
Going (back) there in 2 weeks and I am scared. Last time I encountered an Ahjussi who wanted to do the nasties with me because I was (and still am) chubby. :/
Koreans just stare a lot, period, even at other Koreans. They're not taught that staring at people is rude like we are in western countries. But if you're a foreigner, you're really going to get stared at. They're just curious. And if you're fairly attractive, people will really stare at you.

I just came back from Seoul for the first time on a 6 day trip and its pretty much spot on to what they're saying. Just wanted to add that there are so many restaurants and cafes here. The food here is amazing, its like three times cheaper in Seoul and the quality is twice as better than in the NYC area.
@Ploiesti2001 first few days, I stayed at an airbnb near the lotte tower. The host was great and then later at a hotel called ''glad mapo''. Hotel was really good.
@Ploiesti2001 It's a great location. kind of a business district but easy to get to the tourist spots. The subway/metro goes directly to the hotel and there's a large supermarket within a 5 minute walking distance.
The teacher's vibe is excellent. Of all these people interviewed in this video, I only want to hangout with the teacher and the Brit lady. They have the best energy, to me.

@@Ploiesti2001 I believe it went well thank you but it is hard to tell sometimes. Since I applied I have been acting and thinking like I already have the job and telling people I am moving to Korea. Not through arrogance but just that feeling I had. I will feel really foolish if I don't get it after all that haha It would be in Seoul which is completely fine but I will be getting out into the countryside as often as possible. I won't know whether or not I have got the job until next week I think. The waiting is agony. If I do move there, vlog time indeed.
@@CoachKnapovicEAFC - I think it's mentally healthy o prepare yourself for a totally different way of life and everybody knows interviews results are sometimes a surprise, either way, that's life. Just come back and tell us when the results are back, I personally contemplate visiting Seoul in either spring or autumn, depending on my health.
What basic understanding is missing in people who say life isn’t like K dramas. K dramas are like any other country’s shows. They are all about difficult people and situations. A drama IS conflict. Even in the romances there is often a very human or dark subplot. I learned a fair amount from watching K dramas and when I went to Korea it helped me interact with people and situations a good amount. If they all mean you won’t find a good looking, nice partner with a decent job to have a romance with, aren’t we talking about their naïveté? In 2024 everyone has grown up with tv and films. They may be romantic or optimists or cynical in how they relate to Korea. But they don’t need to be told what they watch on tv isn’t real.
It’s usually featuring rich CEO’s or the children of CEOs . Wealthy elite powerful families etc … which is not what the majority of Koreans lives are like.

after living in korea for two years i would say most of it is just focusing on your own life being happy and yes it can be selfish. but once you try to understand that hard society youll lose yourself, thats why i reccomand not to club too often and drink because its just not as western cultures and people must use you especially if youre a women.

the racism is rife in some of these comments, the girl made a tiktok straight after she got rejected from the uber. it was on uber and she reported it, do people expect her to be recording whilst getting into and uber and not knowing she would be rejected. she speaks korean fluently on her tiktok and i’ve been following her for ages, so yes she understands korean.. there are good drivers and some damn bad ones, unfortunately she crossed paths with a bad one
I think these kind of videos are tricky because once the responses are posted, backlash is inevitable. The Koreans may feel instant protective reflex and get defensive. Foreigners who had a different experience come out against negative experiences of the other respondents because it doesn’t reflect their views. Then the people who always want to play advocates start preaching the “ all countries and cultures do the same” which is not the point because if that is the conclusion, why ask for others opinions if everything is the same everywhere in the world? I feel that people just like to hear what makes them feel better about their own perspective and or reality.
Ok, As a foreigner, I’m already in korea now and I’m already experiencing a lot like a lot!!! Just like what these interviewees said, they already said it but i have lots to say lol, overall I really enjoy Korea so much that I experience new things and culture ‘ And also what the woman says about the couple, so super true!!! Lots of couple around… I’m being like am I supposed to be coupled up or something haha
They sound so shallow to me, always worrying about what people think of them, what people would say about them, etc. People in Asian countries are taught from an early age to conform and just be like all the others, individuality is strongly rejected and expectations from the family are too high, no wonder they suffer so much, one size fits all doesn't suit everyone.

I get the DJ girl. When I moved to LA/Hollywood in the U.S and surrounded myself with only party people, I was also faced with white and hispanic men who fetishized me and asked me how expensive I was. I was drugged before, I was SA'ed on the street while walking home from a club, and the guys I dated there were incredibly toxic. One of my homegirls even got her nose and ribs broken by a gangbanger who had 3 guys find her and beat her up in her own home because she stood up for herself after he verbally abused her. Trashy and immoral people exist in ALL countries esp if you put yourself smack in the middle of shady places. Ofc you won't meet a long term partner at a club, or areas known for partying. And ofc you'll instead meet the most deplorable people in places like that. I think it's our responsibility to choose who we hang out with and where we hang out.

Hearing the words of the Russian girl breaks my heart. As a Korean girl, I completely empathize with her feelings. In Korea, countless sexual offenders and child predators receive lenient sentences, and women are being killed due to dating violence and stalking. Some Korean men even defend the perpetrators. I love Korea, but I can say Korea is a misogynistic country. You can see this clearly from cases like the "Nth Room" incident. To many foreign women visiting Korea, I want to say this: Come, have fun, experience amazing things, and enjoy the delicious food. But please, don’t have any expectations of Korean men. If possible, avoid dating them altogether. They are very different from the image created by K-dramas and K-pop. Of course, there are good people everywhere, but it might be worse than you think. Korean women are increasingly choosing not to date or marry(ex. 4B movement). Some men argue it’s because of women’s selfishness, but that’s simply not true. Some Korean men may disagree with my opinion after reading my comment. However, if you search for misogyny in Korea, you'll see what the truth is. Lastly, I want to tell others there is racism, good things or bad things everywhere. I’ve experienced racism and unkindness while traveling, but I never believed those people represented the entire country. Because I met many kind and wonderful people. :)

I completely understand the pov of the partly russian girl, Ive had the same experience here but its best to realize that if you want to live and be part of the korean society then you need to oblige to these "unspoken rules", this is how the country functions and it is deeply rooted in the culture, there is a certain way to behave in society and you can either find it good or bad but if you want to live there instead of always being in conflict with it, its best to behave like how you are "supposed to", it will become much more comfortable for you or you will most prob become an outcast and that would limit your interactions with korean people.
Why? She’s correct, it should be called out that Korea is disturbing on many levels. In fact it’s very much a patriarchal society where everyone has to adhere to a rigid conformity, that you’re looked down upon if you step outside of the box of the rigid conformity. The reason Korea is a 98% homogeneous society is because they don’t allow people from other countries to become citizens because it would dilute their bloodlines. Westerners think Korea is like their Kdramas which isn’t true at all, in fact the opposite. And it’s the same within the Kpop world, the management companies control every aspect of these idols lives, what they can say & do even not allowing them to date, it’s all very very disturbing yet western fans have romanticised both Kdramas & idols yet in reality it doesn’t even exist. There’s also a lot of racism against any one of different ethnicities especially brown & black people. And what she said about their obsession with age is so true, it’s archaic, you have to be subservient to anyone that is older than yourself as it’s based on seniority rather than ability, even calling them by special names, it’s bizarre. So I think it’s great that she’s being honest and telling people watching the actual reality of living in Korea, especially the cultural aspects as opposed to a romanticised fantasy that doesn’t exist.
Personally, I agree and disagree with her. I think it depends on what unspoken rules she's talking about. I would have liked for her to elaborate on that, like examples. I also agree with her with them expecting you to follow these rules when you come here, like you might not even know about the rules.

And if you are visiting and plan to live there you have to socially adapt!! Traditional customs and ALL. Some aspects, sure, can be offensive, like racism or the beauty standard. But that LITERALLY is everywhere!! Some countries are more straight to the point about it while others are more behind the scenes. If you are going to have a negative outlook on it and fight the customs of another country, it’s probably not going to be a great experience for you in the long run.
It is common for korean being stared by elder people. And I don't like it much and also don't understand it. 😬 But still, we have many good things in korea so please visit, feel and experience real korea! 😄

Safe country but if you are a woman, dont let your guard down, still be careful. Leave the kdrama fantasies at home, Korea is a real country with beautiful deep culture and traditions. And just like any country, it has virtues and flaws. You will find good and bad people too. And dont go around calling men Oppas, ITS CRINGE.

I’ve seen a lot of videos saying Koreans stare a lot and I didn’t get stared at 😂 I’m 5’10” and blonde so I expected a couple of glances over my two weeks but everyone seemed to mind their own business. The only time I got stared at was when a tour bus full of Chinese tourists arrived at one of the temples we were checking out 😂 Should I have a complex over this? 😂 Everyone gets stared at but me? 😂
Maybe, just maybe, those people are extremely self conscientious and misinterpreted the stares, there are times we are lost in our thoughts looking towards someone without actually seeing them.
Korea may be modernized today, but you should have been in The Republic of Korea in the 1970s. I was in the US Army and Military Police, and a KATUSA was with me, the Katusa, and I had to drive to a place in Korea where there were no US troops. Man, the looks I received - nothing terrible. It was my third trip or tour to the Republic of Korea. I loved every moment.
If you go to a country and expect them to change how they act / their culture, you will have a hard time there and maybe you should go somewhere that alignes with your way of doing things and the way you think.
No you should never have to give up your own sense of self or identity. That’s absolutely rubbish, living somewhere and participating in the culture is not the same thing as being bullied into doing things that are inherently wrong or hurtful. Putting up with abusive older people just because they tell you it’s their culture is wrong. Just because something had always been done a certain way doesn’t make it right.
I’d like to visit Korea one day so I like to watch videos like this about Korea and potential things to expect. I’m mostly worried though because I’m a bit tan ( I’m part Mexican and part white so I have more of an olive complexion) and it makes me nervous that people won’t like me since I’ve heard lots of negative experience some people have lol so I’m slightly scared of going. Still though, I do hope to visit for the experience one day if I’m ever able! Thanks for this video!
Don’t worry. Racism in Korea is exaggerated. If you are a tan, black, white, Mexican, European, or African tourist, you are just a “foreign tourist” to Koreans. They will treat you as a foreigner and a tourist, that’s all. They will stare at you because you look different. Foreigners who may get bad experience are mostly from other Asian countries because they got some bad reputation , and/or they are not in good environment. Let’s say if you work in a bad area (bars, clubs, rough labor job market) illegally , the chances of meeting bad people are high. Most mistreatment to foreigners would be verbal). Unlike Europe or Japan, there is no racist group targeting / attacking foreigners in Korea. If you are sociable, you can meet a lot of sweet Koreans. Most Koreans are curious about foreigners. They are shy though. When Koreans stare at you, I advise you to smile and say hi to them. Some may get scared and run away😅 , but some may want to chat with you even though they may not speak English fluently. It will be fun to talk to the locals.
I have something to say.. to russian woman for 7 years in Korea. If you simply accept culture Korean mainly do,(not all just 60 to 70 percent keeping your own personality) they must regard you as Korean. It is the same. everywhere in the world.

14:46 This is a big exaggeration. Most Koreans are quiet and do not spit. Korea is fairly clean, except for a few areas. There is a level of irreverence that can be seen as disrespectful in Korea, so I am not surprised that elders do not take well to her, especially when she describes elders with their “shitty English”. If you expect to be received well, you should come with a modest attitude. Not everything is a joke. People don’t like to be made fun of.

I’m in Korea at the moment and yes on the social anxiety thing. So many people stare intensely and it makes me self conscious because I’m also tall for a girl and on the chubby side (with a complex about my weight) so I don’t know what aspect about me they are staring at. So it can make me a bit self conscious. But on the flip side there have also been so many wonderful people I’ve met and have made me feel so amazing and are super friendly and over accomodating to make us feel welcome ❤
@@tracy4jester Koreans stare at foreigners because foreigners stand out. They also stare at kids, pretty people, dressed-up people. If you are young and beautiful, old people will stare a lot. On the other hand, if you dont look good (I.e. looks like you are a homeless, handicapped, dressed weirdly ), they will try hard not to look at you so they do not offend you.
My daughter is pretty, and when she dresses shabby, people don't stare at her much. When she dresses up (skirt, tidy hair), she gets a lot of stares, especially from old people. They like looking at pretty, interesting people 😅 They are not judging you. They are “amused” at people.
Old Koreans tend to say “going out to get fresh air and watch people” because they do enjoy watching people when they are out. 😂 You can say to yourself “oh, people look at me. Am I that pretty today?” - That‘s the way young Korean girls think 😅

Koreans just stare a lot, period, even at other Koreans. They're not taught that staring at people is rude like we are in western countries. But if you're a foreigner, you're really going to get stared at. They're just curious. And if you're fairly attractive, people will really stare at you.

I just came back from Seoul for the first time on a 6 day trip and its pretty much spot on to what they're saying. Just wanted to add that there are so many restaurants and cafes here. The food here is amazing, its like three times cheaper in Seoul and the quality is twice as better than in the NYC area.

It's so true that you can do so much more in a day there than you can in the U.S. just because of travel time and proximity of things.
What basic understanding is missing in people who say life isn’t like K dramas. K dramas are like any other country’s shows. They are all about difficult people and situations. A drama IS conflict. Even in the romances there is often a very human or dark subplot. I learned a fair amount from watching K dramas and when I went to Korea it helped me interact with people and situations a good amount. If they all mean you won’t find a good looking, nice partner with a decent job to have a romance with, aren’t we talking about their naïveté? In 2024 everyone has grown up with tv and films. They may be romantic or optimists or cynical in how they relate to Korea. But they don’t need to be told what they watch on tv isn’t real.

after living in korea for two years i would say most of it is just focusing on your own life being happy and yes it can be selfish. but once you try to understand that hard society youll lose yourself, thats why i reccomand not to club too often and drink because its just not as western cultures and people must use you especially if youre a women.

the racism is rife in some of these comments, the girl made a tiktok straight after she got rejected from the uber. it was on uber and she reported it, do people expect her to be recording whilst getting into and uber and not knowing she would be rejected. she speaks korean fluently on her tiktok and i’ve been following her for ages, so yes she understands korean.. there are good drivers and some damn bad ones, unfortunately she crossed paths with a bad one
As a Korean, there are a lot of uber drivers who either are bad or asks you so many questions that are unnecessary
I think these kind of videos are tricky because once the responses are posted, backlash is inevitable. The Koreans may feel instant protective reflex and get defensive. Foreigners who had a different experience come out against negative experiences of the other respondents because it doesn’t reflect their views. Then the people who always want to play advocates start preaching the “ all countries and cultures do the same” which is not the point because if that is the conclusion, why ask for others opinions if everything is the same everywhere in the world? I feel that people just like to hear what makes them feel better about their own perspective and or reality.

I get the DJ girl. When I moved to LA/Hollywood in the U.S and surrounded myself with only party people, I was also faced with white and hispanic men who fetishized me and asked me how expensive I was.
I was drugged before, I was SA'ed on the street while walking home from a club, and the guys I dated there were incredibly toxic. One of my homegirls even got her nose and ribs broken by a gangbanger who had 3 guys find her and beat her up in her own home because she stood up for herself after he verbally abused her.
Trashy and immoral people exist in ALL countries esp if you put yourself smack in the middle of shady places. Ofc you won't meet a long term partner at a club, or areas known for partying. And ofc you'll instead meet the most deplorable people in places like that. I think it's our responsibility to choose who we hang out with and where we hang out.

Hearing the words of the Russian girl breaks my heart. As a Korean girl, I completely empathize with her feelings. In Korea, countless sexual offenders and child predators receive lenient sentences, and women are being killed due to dating violence and stalking. Some Korean men even defend the perpetrators. I love Korea, but I can say Korea is a misogynistic country. You can see this clearly from cases like the "Nth Room" incident.
To many foreign women visiting Korea, I want to say this: Come, have fun, experience amazing things, and enjoy the delicious food. But please, don’t have any expectations of Korean men. If possible, avoid dating them altogether. They are very different from the image created by K-dramas and K-pop. Of course, there are good people everywhere, but it might be worse than you think. Korean women are increasingly choosing not to date or marry(ex. 4B movement). Some men argue it’s because of women’s selfishness, but that’s simply not true. Some Korean men may disagree with my opinion after reading my comment. However, if you search for misogyny in Korea, you'll see what the truth is.
Lastly, I want to tell others there is racism, good things or bad things everywhere. I’ve experienced racism and unkindness while traveling, but I never believed those people represented the entire country. Because I met many kind and wonderful people. :)

I completely understand the pov of the partly russian girl, Ive had the same experience here but its best to realize that if you want to live and be part of the korean society then you need to oblige to these "unspoken rules", this is how the country functions and it is deeply rooted in the culture, there is a certain way to behave in society and you can either find it good or bad but if you want to live there instead of always being in conflict with it, its best to behave like how you are "supposed to", it will become much more comfortable for you or you will most prob become an outcast and that would limit your interactions with korean people.
Why? She’s correct, it should be called out that Korea is disturbing on many levels. In fact it’s very much a patriarchal society where everyone has to adhere to a rigid conformity, that you’re looked down upon if you step outside of the box of the rigid conformity.
The reason Korea is a 98% homogeneous society is because they don’t allow people from other countries to become citizens because it would dilute their bloodlines.
Westerners think Korea is like their Kdramas which isn’t true at all, in fact the opposite. And it’s the same within the Kpop world, the management companies control every aspect of these idols lives, what they can say & do even not allowing them to date, it’s all very very disturbing yet western fans have romanticised both Kdramas & idols yet in reality it doesn’t even exist.
There’s also a lot of racism against any one of different ethnicities especially brown & black people.
And what she said about their obsession with age is so true, it’s archaic, you have to be subservient to anyone that is older than yourself as it’s based on seniority rather than ability, even calling them by special names, it’s bizarre.
So I think it’s great that she’s being honest and telling people watching the actual reality of living in Korea, especially the cultural aspects as opposed to a romanticised fantasy that doesn’t exist.
Personally, I agree and disagree with her. I think it depends on what unspoken rules she's talking about. I would have liked for her to elaborate on that, like examples. I also agree with her with them expecting you to follow these rules when you come here, like you might not even know about the rules.

외국인들은 자신을 무조건적으로 존중해달라고 하지만, 그들이 한국인을 똑같이 존중해 주는지부터 생각을 해봤으면 좋겠다. 한국에 온 외국인들 중 자신이 고객이라 생각하는 외국인들이 너무 많은것 같아.
I’ve seen a lot of videos saying Koreans stare a lot and I didn’t get stared at 😂 I’m 5’10” and blonde so I expected a couple of glances over my two weeks but everyone seemed to mind their own business. The only time I got stared at was when a tour bus full of Chinese tourists arrived at one of the temples we were checking out 😂 Should I have a complex over this? 😂 Everyone gets stared at but me? 😂
Maybe, just maybe, those people are extremely self conscientious and misinterpreted the stares, there are times we are lost in our thoughts looking towards someone without actually seeing them.

Korea may be modernized today, but you should have been in The Republic of Korea in the 1970s. I was in the US Army and Military Police, and a KATUSA was with me, the Katusa, and I had to drive to a place in Korea where there were no US troops. Man, the looks I received - nothing terrible. It was my third trip or tour to the Republic of Korea. I loved every moment.
I want to move to Korea. Any tips on how I can make it happen?

If you go to a country and expect them to change how they act / their culture, you will have a hard time there and maybe you should go somewhere that alignes with your way of doing things and the way you think.
No you should never have to give up your own sense of self or identity. That’s absolutely rubbish, living somewhere and participating in the culture is not the same thing as being bullied into doing things that are inherently wrong or hurtful. Putting up with abusive older people just because they tell you it’s their culture is wrong. Just because something had always been done a certain way doesn’t make it right.
I’d like to visit Korea one day so I like to watch videos like this about Korea and potential things to expect. I’m mostly worried though because I’m a bit tan ( I’m part Mexican and part white so I have more of an olive complexion) and it makes me nervous that people won’t like me since I’ve heard lots of negative experience some people have lol so I’m slightly scared of going. Still though, I do hope to visit for the experience one day if I’m ever able! Thanks for this video!
Don’t worry. Racism in Korea is exaggerated. If you are a tan, black, white, Mexican, European, or African tourist, you are just a “foreign tourist” to Koreans. They will treat you as a foreigner and a tourist, that’s all. They will stare at you because you look different. Foreigners who may get bad experience are mostly from other Asian countries because they got some bad reputation , and/or they are not in good environment. Let’s say if you work in a bad area (bars, clubs, rough labor job market) illegally , the chances of meeting bad people are high. Most mistreatment to foreigners would be verbal). Unlike Europe or Japan, there is no racist group targeting / attacking foreigners in Korea.
If you are sociable, you can meet a lot of sweet Koreans. Most Koreans are curious about foreigners. They are shy though. When Koreans stare at you, I advise you to smile and say hi to them. Some may get scared and run away😅 , but some may want to chat with you even though they may not speak English fluently. It will be fun to talk to the locals.
In Sweden is the same 😅 people stare a lot at each other during the talking.
I have something to say.. to russian woman for 7 years in Korea. If you simply accept culture Korean mainly do,(not all just 60 to 70 percent keeping your own personality) they must regard you as Korean. It is the same. everywhere in the world.

14:46 This is a big exaggeration. Most Koreans are quiet and do not spit. Korea is fairly clean, except for a few areas. There is a level of irreverence that can be seen as disrespectful in Korea, so I am not surprised that elders do not take well to her, especially when she describes elders with their “shitty English”. If you expect to be received well, you should come with a modest attitude. Not everything is a joke. People don’t like to be made fun of.
