i just wanted to point out that garam, who was mentioned in the beginning of the video, was proved to be innocent, and pictures came out showing that she was the one being harrassed. the full document showed in the video was released, and it showed that she was found innocent. she was standing up for her friend, whose naked pictures were posted online by the student who made the claims against garam. it was also proved that the girl who accused garam and spread those pictures of her friend got one of the worst punishments, which is to be forced to transfer schools. this was an amazing video and it really explains why bullying scandals are so big in korea, and I don't mean to discredit any of it, i just wanted to make sure that people knew she was innocent. this 16 year old lost her career, got her dreams crushed and was harrassed online constantly by millions of people every day for months across multiple platforms. her face was even on the national news with people calling her a bully, which may even influence her future career prospects, while she was innocent all along. i just felt she needed some justice, specially as she's being used as an example of a kpop idol bully, when she really wasn't, and i wish people would just leave her alone. she's been through enough.

Always sucks when the wrong person is punished. It even sucks more that the same people spreading news to condemn her won't speak up about the accusation being wrong.

@@redgrave4492 exactly. people jumped to conclusions about the case, instead of staying neutral and waiting for both sides of the story and proof. I was keeping up with the story, and the only piece of evidence they released was that document, without the verdict and most of the information crossed out. it didn't even have the school's name, which makes it barely any evidence at all, since anyone could print a paper and cross out some lines. people believed allegations like the one where she hit a classmate in the head with a flowerpot, with no evidence, ans kept harrassing her and creating even more rumours. and when she was finally proven innocent, people were suddenly bored and never mentioned it again, leaving her with this horrible reputation. I remember asking people in comment sections to stay neutral and wait until there was proof, or an official notice saying whether she was innocent or not, and getting trashed for supposedly supporting a bully. and then, when she was proved innocent and i mentioned that in comments, people told me to shut up, that it was old news and that they were annoyed to hear about her. they really just wanted a public execution, and it came at the cost of a 16 year old girl's career and mental health. it was honestly one of the most frustrating scandals that happened in kpop, because the public was as responsible as the people who tried to frame her. had they not completely ruined her reputation by spreading information they didn't know was true, the poor girl could have had her name mostly cleared and been added back in the group.

Also w the class hierarchy there, kids with more successful parents are more likely to be able to get away with these crimes. It’s really messed up

in korea, "bullying" as it often gets translated to actually means "school violence" and i think that leads a lot of westerners to downplay the severity of the actions and accusations. its why idols being accused of "bullying" is such a severe and career ending accusation, because to the korean public, it's not just name calling. it involves abuse of all kinds (verbal, physical, sexual, etc)

    • @lee_27_nam

In all over the world every case is different, you cannot put an attempted m!!rder in the category of school bullying.
In all over the world there is cases with teenagers that is way severer then in the kdrama the glory or the penthouse or school 2015, but the dealing with the cases is different, when something like the glory happens it is called an attempted m!!rder and those are called criminals, they go to juvenile with a court and judge to determine the period of the jail time like any other crime.
The teachers will report the incident to the police and an investigation will be initiated and justice even if it takes long time will happens eventually.
In korea they cover every single major crime teenagers does by this umbrella term of school bullying with type of punishment that is used for cheating in exams in every other side of the world.
Armed robbery in korea is considered school bullying they get a punishment by getting expelled for few days and everything is over.
Helding a person hostage, kidnapping and physical harm also putted in the category of school bullying.
That is the major problem with korea, if they separate these crimes from school bullying they will find themselves like any other country with same level of bullying

    • @lee_27_nam
      @lee_27_nam Год назад +48

In any other country in this world a crime is a crime no one is above justice, you cannot use your social status and position in society to influence the justice system.
I see a lot of antibullying organisations in korea over the years screaming of this phenomenal of getting away with major crime by misusing the social status and high position in society.
In korea it is a known fact, if you are a chaebol family you can get away with everything even major crimes, you can do sexual harrassment of a child and do not get punished for it, instead you will be able to punish your victim with the school violence committee system.
Antibullying organisations every year states that over 70 % of school violence committees, the perpetrator is the real victim and bullies use school violence committees like a tool to cause a secondary harm and even a third harm to their victims.
If we are going to talk about the fact that bullying in korea is a severe problem, then let's talk about all the causes that made this a severe problem, not just that it is an existing problem.
Lets see the source before judging anything in this world

‼️The problem is in Asia there is no punishment for kids under the age of 18. In Japan a student who was like 16 or 17 knew he wouldn't be punished, so he took an entire bus of people hostage and stabbed four women to death because he wanted to and he knew he would get away with it. And he did. He got a slap on the wrist and like a month in a psychiatric hospital before he was set free. The government protected his identity I think they even gave him a new identity just in case. And now he walks free his crimes completely hidden and unknown to everyone in his life. He's happy and successful and doesn't regret it.
These kids that are really messed up in the head know there is no punishment. And the other kids also know there is no punishment so they just go along with it so they don't end up the next target of the bully leader. There is no incentive to protect the victim no matter how much they may want to and every reason not to interfere.
In the US a kid like that Japanese one would be treated as an adult and given an adult punishment and his identity certainly wouldn't be protected on a crime that terrible. He would have been charged as an adult and he would face adult consequences that permanently affected his life. But it's not like that in Asia and the kids know this and take advantage of it. They can basically do whatever they want as long as they're under the age of 18 and it won't affect their life or reputation in the future. Until the laws change and they stop protecting these criminal kids and start protecting society from them, nothing is going to change. Why would they change if there is no consequences for their behavior? Everyone else is too afraid of becoming the next victim.

As someone who was bullied, I HATE that people think bullies have it hard in their own lives. Movies often redeem bullies that way and it boils my blood! Because even though it might be like that for some people, it’s RARELY the case.
In my experience, hardships actually make you a more empathetic person. When I meet someone who I think is very empathetic, I often find out later that they were bullied in the past, and I think “yeah, that makes so much sense”. If you have bad parents and start bully perfectly nice people at school, you’re weird.
No, people don’t bully because they have it bad at home. They just have a brain with less empathy. I’m not talking about middle school bullies, since I myself have irrationally disliked people even though they haven’t done anything wrong (I can’t believe I ever did that). I’m also not talking about the people that only have bullied someone occasionally, like the mayor bully’s friends who doesn’t bother you as soon as the “leader” is absent from school. Those people might actually grow up into better people.
I’m talking about that one bully that finds a way to bully you everyday. Those people have something wrong with their brains. Statistics say that you’ll meet at least one psychopath in your lifetime, why wouldn’t it be your bully?

One day, I discovered them in girl's washroom, they were bullying a mentally challenged girl(my best friend was one of them), they ganged up on that poor girl, put her head inside of a dirty toilet and flushed it, slapped her and pulled her hair and torn her shirt.
When I went intervened in the middle of their henious act, they said that she is mad, she deserves it, even her parents beat her up. I told them that they aren't her parents and saved the girl and she was crying like hell. This became a reason of me breaking my friendship with these people, although my bestie came back to me, she said sorry to me and that girl. Its been 15 years since that incident as the other bullies/ friends never apologized, they even spread rumours about me and destroyed my notes 1 day before the exam. Not only that, but they wrote nasty slurs on my bench. That time I used to cry that I became isolated but today I thank God as afterwards I found really good friends who are still the same unlike the popular bully group whose friendship broke off as they left the school.

This reminds me of the stories I've heard of bullying in Japan... like even the teachers will subtly bully children for being different, like ignoring them or maybe ignoring that they have a waiver for their natural hair (whether it's brown or wavy, etc) because a lot of the schools say you must have black straight hair. I read a case where a school insisted a child's hair be dyed black. That shit's sick.
Apparently the whole society thinks standing out from the crowd is a bad thing and it seems Korean schools are similar in that regard. But it isn't just standing out, some of those bullying cases you mentioned were straight up hate crimes, like the bullying done to the Mongolian kid. The bullies should be in jail, imo. The government is protecting the students too much, imo. A lot of the bullying mentioned was plain ol' assault and just because a student committed the attacks doesn't mean that's a get out of jail free card. It'll keep getting worse because the punishment isn't severe enough and they know their record will be wiped clean at some point. If there is evidence of all these assaults, bullies should go to jail, no matter how high on the social status ladder they're on, and have them get out a year after their records would have normally been wiped. That way, it's always on record that they were abusive twats.

I watched "The Glory" as well and was shocked by the scenes. It left me so nervous and trembling, knowing that there was absolutely no one who helped her or cared at all. Discovering that the story is based on a real-life case and knowing that there are similar cases around the world makes me so sad and angry. I can't believe that people are capable of such horrifying acts without remorse, driving poor souls to suicide. What shocks me, even more, is that the system completely failed her. I had similar experiences and just like in the series, every adult has failed to help in any way.
Sadly, bullies exist everywhere in the world, in every class or age group. Whether at school, at work, or just on the open street ... I witnessed silent bullying in my class by a boy who never said a thing. He wasn't beaten, however, he was verbally ridiculed so the teachers thought it was just fun between "friends". At work, when I was in training, I often saw new employees being bullied by certain groups because their personalities didn't fit in. I always think of that one lovely woman who was a ray of sunshine and in less than 1 month she was completely broken and quit. These wounds will never fade.
I remember when I watched American high school movies, where it was a running gag of mobbing to dump the head of people in the toilet. Those scenes always terrified me. As a german/polish girl, I see that there are cultural differences in the way that the family name is involved in every action the child does. I hope from the bottom of my heart, that "The Glory" makes a huge impact in social media. I hope people will not only start to talk about mobbing more openly but take action. The change to tackle this problem is more than overdue.

I think there's also a lot of undiagnosed mental illness that goes on in Korean society in general as well, allowing power to be given into the hands of children that may have psychopathic or sociopathic tendancies. I can't tell you how many times I've heard stories from my friends teaching English in Korea and how many I've seen online of foreign teachers exposing just how many undiagnosed students (with severe autism, ADHD, suicidal thoughts and personality disorders etc.) there are and how NO help is allotted to them to cater to their learning needs or learning environment.
In fact, when teachers attempt to bring up the fact that a child may be mentally unwell or need extra care to the parents, the parents just get offended and have threatened to sue the school and the teachers, making it difficult for teachers to speak up because they threaten their reputations among the other school staff. South Korea seriously needs to change. I'm sure the majority of the kids bullying others have some sort of disorder that is going unchecked and perhaps those who are being bullied do too, like autism for example, making it less likely for them to speak up.
We need to end this once and for all and give these kids the resources they deserve to live and thrive in a healthy environment. Oh yeah, and prosecute the offenders to the fullest degree! Goodness...

That is so sad. This is such a worldwide problem. I do think it may be worst in Korea because of the whole group mentality thing and how you're not supposed to stand out. My heart goes out to those who do stand out for the right things and get hate for it. Here In the US there is also tons of bullying but it's definitely more verbal, racist, and psychological, cyber and not really physical because there's consequences like lawsuits and news media. The LAST THING a principal at a school wants is for the news media to do a story on their school and see just how bad they are. Why? Bad reputation = less enrollment and less enrollment = less money ($$$ millions lost) if kids go to other districts or homeschool. It's all about money.
It's simple really. The reason bullies exist is because of really bad parents. I have seen parents teach their kids to say bad words to the teacher and to punch someone if they don't like them as small as 2nd grade. Such bad parents! If only good God fearing parents existed that would love and educate their children to be good productive members of society then this world would be a paradise and we could all enjoy life forever.
I'm going to watch the Glory later on because i keep seeing it in my recommendations.

A person who actually has a healthy fear/reverence for God would strive to live holy, and would seek to abstain from corruption, abuse, and sexual crimes, etc. Here in North America a person doesn't have to look too hard to find that our society does not live up to its claim, "IN GOD WE TRUST". The deciding factor is what people claim to be as opposed to what they actually live. Therefore, the wheat and tares grow together and in the end God will sort it out.

And the answer is very simple really. Because they are not god-fearing at all so that makes them fake/false christians (and that is NOT because its their fault bc i'm sure they had good hearts) but mainly because their clergy/leaders practice, tolerate and teach such things or don't teach them anything. They also don't have any discipline/consequences. If you commit a serious crime like( you mentioned "sex crimes, and TONS of corruption") you should get prison. Period! Your religious leaders should not interfere with the law of the land. They should only try to help you as much as possible spiritually but if you don't want to change your ways, then they should kick you out of their religious organization because you are ruining the reputation of that organization and above all God's.
Because there is no discipline and their leaders tolerate all types of wrongdoing or do it themselves, many people don't want anything to do with any religion, even a good one.
If you really want scriptural answer Jesus says there would be many fake/false Christians in Matthew 7:21-23 because many religious leaders would trick many people into thinking they are christian but they just want money and power, mainly money. Remember there are many pure evil people in this world. Google says there are about 45000+ DIFFERENT christian denominations. Thats just ridiculous if you really think about it.) Jesus compared the religious organizations to trees and any bad tree producing "bad fruit" (in other words bad people) should be burned/destroyed. Matthew 7:19-20. Anyways very good question!

Why break into people's houses? Why search them out?
I also read a webtoon about bullies and there's a character who gave the same rationale mentioned here about how not ruining the kids' futures by punishing them too harshly or publicly. On one level, I can understand the thought but on the other, what about the victims? And certain actions are beyond redemption or forgivable (in my opinion; better people than me might be able to forgive). For example, the crimes done in the glory are unforgivable and NONE of the bullies are repentent in the slightest. The main bully even says her mistake was not just killing the protagonist.
I think expulsion and imprisonment should go together because they commited heinous crimes. Like how are you 16/17/18 and claiming your brain isn't developed enough to know this is a bad decision/choice/action? You *chose* to hurt someone _repeatedly_ because you got enjoyment out of it.

When my brother tormented me, I'd always think that he'd either get so angry that he'll take my life, or that I'd get so depressed that I'd take my own. When I felt a lot of pain, choosing life, choosing to live, was knowing that you'll get abused, tormented, and tortured again, which makes it hard to face and to choose life. It is also that your life is treated as not important, that you are stupid, worthless, useless, and deserve to be hurt by others, and you're treated like you're nothing to them, that causes depression and makes it also hard to live, and I even avoided mirrors for a long time, because looking at it I just saw pain and suffering. But I chose to live anyways, which felt like choosing insanity sometimes, but if something like a bug can live, then why couldn't I? If someone that mean and violent is able to live, then why couldn't I?
I cut off contact to my brother, and I enjoy my life and my freedom now. But my mind still wonders back into the past, because I think there's something important it that can help people understand something new, and maybe it can help them somehow.

It is so weird that you say that the whole country takes bullying seriously when I have seen (in Korean dramas of course, I use them as reference) these teachers that just don’t care. They blame the victims for attracting the wrong attention. Some teachers are just corrupt and they don’t care about the victims, they just want their good report for a promotion. And worse, some teachers are afraid to scold the bullies because the bullies have rich parents. Like… the country suddenly only cares about bullying when it comes to celebrities like idols and actors, but that is WAY too late to start caring. The society should’ve cared about their bullying habits WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING. Anyways, the irony is uncanny here.

The celebrities are just scapegoats, a sort of virtue signaling if you will... When the society doesn't actually care to fix a problem, they will continously find public scapegoats to prove that their society isn't like that. The amount of bullies that go unpunished also result in extreme online bullying of idols and celebrities. Too many frustrated people willing to enact justice "anonymously".

One thing I wanted to mention - Kim Garam was proven innocent. I would love it if you could mention it, because the bullying accusations were a targeted character assassination from her old bully, and they worked. Her bully was given a level 8. The official document backed Garam up completely. Because she's still young and the accusations got *much* more publicity than her innocence, it would be nice to mention that her name has in fact been cleared. Itthink Kwon Mina is a better example of a bully in a kpop group. She had everyone believing terrible things about her groupmates, and clearly has some serious mental issues which influence her malicious fixation on her teammate, Jimin. She almost ruined her career singlehandedly.

Garam is innocent of bullying and violence in the official school disciplinary report; therefore, she should have stayed in Le Sserafim. Garam defended a friend verbally who pleaded for help when Eunsoo took hidden photos of Garam's friend in her underwear and hacked a facebook account to post them online under another name to incriminate an innocent student. Eunsoo's rich father used his influence to push through a disciplinary committee that was biased against Garam. Yet, the level 5 offense that Garam received for defending her friend with a cuss word or two carried 0 severity points for violence and was the most common one given at her school, while Eunsoo's very rare level 8 offense carried 16-20 points in severity of violence which was beyond suspension. Yet, the rich father used his influence to get Eunsoo to transfer schools before the punishment could be implemented and jealous Eunsoo bullied Garam at the new school by getting boys in online chat rooms to threaten violence against her and keep inviting her so she couldn't leave the chats. Garam also had insults and obscenities written on her desk at school.
Eunsoo's intense jealousy of Garam debuting in her favorite kpop company was one of the primary driving forces for the lies and corruption to drive Garam out, but another pivotal reason the powers in kpop and South Korea were so rabid in going after Garam is that she stood up to the rich elite's perverted "right" to post child porn online, use blackmail to control girls' lives, and incriminate others by stealing their identity to post it so they don't get caught. In their demented minds, this is what they call a perpetrator of crimes. As a result, Eunsoo's rich father purchased a dirty law firm to file a fraudulent lawsuit with the ulterior motive of destroying Garam's career since it coincided with Garam's debut in Le Sserafim and had nothing to do with the stated intent which was accusing Garam of bullying, since the school incident happened four years before and was caused by the violent actions of sexual harassment and theft of a facebook account by Eunsoo.
According to the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Garam was by far the hardest hit target by Kakao Organization affiliated with Starship with 336 slanderous articles written to destroy her reputation. Kakao is currently under investigation by the FTC for reverse viral marketing. Kakao falsely claimed that Garam was an ex Starship trainee who was removed for bullying other members which was a lie. Furthermore, Kakao is responsible for the slanderous picture and article claiming that Garam had written down with Ive and other famous kpop groups on a blackboard, even though Garam is not seen in the picture and even though she hadn't attended that school since 2018 which was long before the group IVE even formed. Finally, they are responsible for lies about Garam bullying other Le Sserafim members. it is obvious that there was a coordinated conspiracy to cancel Garam, especially with the fake evidence and fabricated photos spread all over the internet by the fake victim, Eunsoo, her rich father's purchase of a dirty law firm to file a fraudulent lawsuit with the ulterior motive of destroying Garam's career, and Kakao's viral flooding of the internet with negative and slanderous articles against Garam who was innocent of the false allegations.
While Hybe appeared to defend Garam in a superficial sense by putting out an official statement that recounted Garam's version of the story, it was done in an impersonal way with statements like According to Garam. Furthermore, it was issued too late, since it also announced that she was being placed on hiatus. However, the real incompetence and undermining by Hybe came from their refusal to let Garam make the public statement she requested in mid-April and their refusal to let her release the official school disciplinary report which she also had available in mid-April. Even worse, Hybe's complete betrayed of Garam came when they refused to release this critical information even after Eunsoo's side released a cropped and marked on part of the school disciplinary document which only indicated Garam's offense. Furthermore, they didn't release the testimonies of the many students that supported Garam's innocence. Hybe also never filed lawsuits for libel or slander against all the false information and incriminating faked photos posted by the fake victim (real bully) or against the death or sexual assault threats that were posted online which badly damaged Garam's reputation and traumatized her psychologically, especially since she rarely left her dorm room during the time of her hiatus because of anxiety and depression. This downcast condition and isolation persisted for an extended period even after Garam left Hybe and went home.
This cyber witch hunt fueled with malicious lies didn't give Garam's side of the story which would have been based, if it had been allowed to take place, on official school evidence, direct testimony and the emotional resonance of Garam's personal appeal. The effect was to create great hype at the moment of debut but to destroy the mental health of Garam who was falsely accused and served as the scapegoat for the group. There is even a haunting scene in an ad in which Garam falls really hard on a car which suggests that she is Hybe's fallen sixth angel, since Le Sseragim means six angels. Then after a long hiatus and a period of silence, Hybe dumped Garam with no attempt made to clear her name, even though they had all the evidence to do so and even though they had used the excuse of an upcoming trial against Eunsoo as the reason not to reveal the evidence to exonerate Garam. The defender against sexual exploitation, Garam, was severely punished and Eunsoo, the sexual offender of Garam's friend and facebook hacker was rewarded.
Therefore after Garam's unjust cancellation and while sunk in the depths of depression, it was left up to Garam with the help of her faithful friend Yudimi to muster up the strength to clear her name by releasing the official school disciplinary report and Garam's explanatory statement in August, in which Garam refuted many of the falsehoods by saying she never drank or smoked, never bullied or ordered anyone around, never transferred schools and never used violence. She also had the honesty to admit that she would have handled the defense of her friend a bit differently now that she had the perspective of more maturity but was adamant that in principle she had done the right thing because her parents had taught her the importance of defending a friend in a time of adversity. But honestly, Garam's actions seem really honorable and reasonable considering the severity of the offense: yelling and saying a couple of cuss words at Eunsoo for posting half nude photos of her friend as a profile pic online and hacking a facebook account to incriminate another student. Better yet, I thought of Garam's actions as a wise lesson posed as a question: If every member of a group and its fandom had the guts to defend a targeted member the way Garam defended her friend against a powerful and perverted enemy like Eunsoo, wouldn't all these unjust bullying cancellations like of Jimin, Soojin and Garam come to an end? In Garam's closing address in her letter, she thanked her fans with a harbinger of hope, GaramDream. And the strength of Garam's and Yudimi's efforts freed from Hybe's draconian restrictions turned the tide of public opinion in Garam's favor.
Presently, there are some hopeful signs such as Garam giving thanks to her fans on her birthday for her video banner in Seoul on November 16, and 6 days later the first beautiful photos of Garam in her yellow school uniform appeared on twitter. My hope is that if Garam wishes to return to music that she will go into jpop in Japan, as I think it would be safer and give her far more freedom of expression and action. Garam is also quite popular there, comments are more positive for her there than in South Korea, there are far fewer risks, and Japanese songs are longer with storylines that include acting in the videos, which is a great fit since she is currently studying acting at the School of Performing Arts. Plus, the big money influences and propaganda and cancellation campaigns waged against her in kpop will have far less influence in Japan and she will have better protection in Japan from the depravity of lies, misogyny, jealousy and hypocrisy. However, I will support her in whatever she decides to do especially if it is kpop or kdrama because she will need a lot more protection then. Garam is one of my very favorites because of her great beauty and charisma on stage and her fabulous singing, dancing, and her strong integrity of character at such a young age. Her soothing sweet vocals with a touch of sassiness in Blue Flame and Sour Grapes are like a delightful dream and her beautiful ferocity in Fearless is captivating. Her heartbreaking story and efforts to rise again from great persecution are a true inspiration and remind me of an epic movie, so it is certainly no coincidence that she is studying to be an actress. I just wish her the best of success, happiness with love and trust from family and friends, and warmth and understanding from all over the world.
