  • Hi Folks!
Enjoy Episode 5 of my New 6 Part Series - 60 Days Solo in the White Wilderness.
Join me solo camping with the dogs exploring wild and untouched Newfoundland & Labrador winter wilderness.
In this episode, I push towards Labrador's Eagle River and its tributaries with hopes of getting a glimpse of the nearby Mealy Mountains. The country is unknown to me and my Malamute Bear. Surprises await around each corner!
I will air a new episode every 7-14 days until the series is over.

    Saku's Book:

Justin Barbour goes on a long expedition through Newfoundland & Labrador’s most remote woods with his dogs Saku and Bear. There is first class-rarely seen wilderness galore. Together the companions explore, challenge themselves and kick back by the fire. The peace, beauty and unpredictability of nature is all around them.
This series consists of 2 winter expeditions covering 250 kilometres. The first begins in Newfoundland as Justin and the dogs venture into the faraway interior woods for a month. Justin moves by snowshoes and hauls a 250lb toboggan. The team pushes their way towards the vast 2,895km2 Bay Du Nord Wilderness Reserve.
The goal is to explore the province's vast, uninhabited winter woods and frozen waterways. But it will not be easy. It's hard work all the way but with it come rewards bigger than most can imagine!
Be prepared to feel the elements, taste a true wilderness journey, and travel the old way leaving the motors behind.
    The adventure begins!
** A video showing an in-depth overview of the expeditions outfit will air once the series is over. If this 7th episode interests you keep on the lookout for it.

I often times feel a bit sad of how quick it is to watch through something like this given how long it takes for you to create. The good I see though is how much you've grown through these years you've been doing this, and at the same time you keep doing your own thing. Got to respect that integrity.

Slush and hills are both killers. But when the going is good, boy what a blessing. Thanks for series. I'm not yet ready for the winter to come again, but this video is making me nostalgic for the colder months...
Oh, and snowmobile tracks: I love to hate them and hate that I love them. They take away a bit of the wilderness experience, but they ease travel, even when they buck the sled from time to time...

Another very cool adventure with Bear. I always think about after you and Bear busting trail most of the day, what a grind it must be to set up camp for the night. Setting up the tent & wood stove, cutting pine boughs for the tent, locate, haul and saw firewood, melt snow for water, feed yourself and Bear! You both must sleep very good! I would have a big pucker factor walking on that Eagle river when you can hear the water rushing below you! Love those sunset pictures. Another great video!!!!

I have been troubled by dry, cracking feet for several years. Absolutely the best remedey going is some stuff called "Healthy Feet" made by O'Keeffee Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. This stuff is a canned cream in a tub and re-hydrates both hands and feet literally over night. Don't know if it routinely distributed in Canada but you owe it to yourself to check it out...beats a water trough treatment hands down!

Such a good series, by'. Reminds me of my younger days and my small adventures back in Northern Ontario (nothing vast like yours, mind you, but they were fun adventures none the less). Lure of the North are good people, we have their anorak and moccasins too, and a Dustrude saw like yours. Top quality stuff. Is that a Niko stove?
