  • In this video I STRUGGLED to get the SP500's carburetor working correctly, thanks to some tiny little oversights I made. I also tried out the bike back to back with and without the Dial-A-Jet "carburetor enhancement pump"

Great story telling to make carburetor problems entertaining. Also, thank you for making me feel better about buying a modern fuel injected street legal enduro that exceeds my capability, just for how well sorted it came from the factory. Chasis, suspension, brakes, fueling, clutch; all better than me. Not feeling any shame.

Yah those carb vent lines are more important than you might think. Got stuck in quicksand one time and clogged a vent line on my xr250 and it absolutely would not run. Took many many hours to pull it out and then push it a few miles back to the truck. Ended up cleaning the carb half a dozen times before I figured out the vent line was clogged, clipped the clog bit off with some scissors, and it ran perfect after that.

The DR500 has a de-compression lever. On mine I got rid of the cable and handlebar lever and made a small aluminium lever which bolts directly to the shaft on the head. I get the piston to the right spot, flip the lever and kick. No kick back and no risk of breaking the kickstarter etc. I have photos if it's helpful.

Gabe I had a similar issue with the float bowl on 3 carbs on a YZ80. I put a second flow control (lawnmower) valve after the tank petcock. It seemed to regulate the flow into the bowl and was able to start work on the jets. Loving the journey on this.

The Kenda Parker DT's are amazing for the terrain you're riding. They carve up a storm, even the narrow odd tread patterned front, please trust me. The Trackmaster sucks balls under any lateral grip situations. I was a cheap-azz for my first year riding and only used Trackmasters... Never again. Dude, I'll venmo you the difference in price to get a 120 Parker rear over a Trackcrapper. Plus the Parkers are DOT and they LAST just as long as the Tmaster

Agreed but… Even my XR250 is a bear to push start on dirt. Cannot imagine a fresh built 500cc. Pavement with a pull strap another thing entirely.
Also consider what broke is not likely soft aluminum parts but rather cast steel. Good damage control suggests you don’t circulate that debris around a ‘fresh’ engine.
