  • I was lucky enough to be invited to be a part of Rocky Mountain's $1,000 bike 1,000 mile challenge! I was aboard the 1982 Suzuki SP500, and this is a short summary of how that ride went, and what I got out of it. The whole series produced by Rocky Mountain is WAY better. Back in 1981 the first year of production I bought a brand new SP 500. I paid $1800 for it. Soon after I had a White Bros pipe installed along with carb jetting. That thing sounded bad ass with that pipe. I put about 5000 miles on it the next couple of years and then traded it in for a GS 750 EZ. Both of those bikes gave me great memories.

I started out as a young boy on a 1976 Yamaha TT500, dual shocks with maybe 3 inches of travel front and rear lol. I am 50 now, ride single track in the mountains of East TN and I actually lowered my 2020 YZ250 shock/forks internally 2 inches because I learned to ride on a bike that was lower to the ground lol. I can climb hills better, throw the bike around better through tight single track, it is just so much easier to ride a little lower bike like the old bikes were. Funny thing about it is I am 6'5, no physical height need to lower it whatsoever! Having a good time has to do with the company you keep and the attitude going forward! Thanks for sharing your experience! Great video!

That was great! To see a bunch of old bikes from back when I was young, doing such a wild adventure, very cool! Back in the mid-80's, I had an '83 SP500 with very low miles and it was a very capable dual sport at the time. I took it on many trips to Colorado (rode it all the way from Texas), then used it in Colorado for riding off-road on the mountain trails. That bike got up some pretty nasty stuff, and had been above 13,000 ft. many times with never any problems. When fairly new and in good shape, the SP500 had plenty of power and could easily cruise at 65mph all day, and had tons of low end torque for the trails. Mine never had oil leaks or fuel leaks, or any problems at all. It was heavy bike, but a huge improvement over my previous trail bike which was a '72 Honda CL350.

Great take away! Great lesson to share! This is an intimidating crossroad we all will face some day - the degradation of our bodie's capabilities. I have said since I first rode two wheels, if I can sling a leg over, I'm riding, no matter my condition - wheel chair, crutches, injuries kept me from some point events consequently sponsors were reluctant the following season..... Glad your enlightenment happened relatively fast for you. Took a while for me to gain the perspective and several more years before competing again (fearing reinjury)....
No matter what - never give up on self or our passions.

Thanks for this video on the SP Gabe. Last year, I purchased a SP250 to go ride the dirt roads in the Mendocino National forest . It's been a fun little bike. I truck it up to the mountains in my pickup for 2 reasons. One, it has a mall tank and can't go too far without a refill as you already know. Two, I'm guessing top speed would be around 45 MPH. It's about 30 miles to the mountains from my home. That said, at 65 years old, I enjoy the heck out of riding a bike that let's me get away but not worrying about it leaving me on foot. More power would only get me into trouble.

Your comments on the frailty of the human body is true no matter your age. I am now 76yo and until I 72 my goal was coastal cruising in a sailboat. A massive heart attack at 72 changed all that. I will admit that I have given myself the time to indulge in many hobbies. Never gold plated ones. Most of my hobbies have involved older equiptment that I have rebuilt or modified. So to all of you enjoy your life as I did as there is no guarantee of you lasting without problems. Certain risks are acceptable, but don't be an idiot and push it over the top. Happy riding racing or sailing or whatever rings your bell. Bill

Very cool video! I rode along with my brother and a group on my brother's Suzuki SP500 near Tower city Pennsylvania several decades ago! Before there was a legal way to ride there. It was sort of a no man's land of trails on land owned by several different coal mining companies. This video reminded me of that! The SP500 I rode was in much better shape than the one you were on and it was not loaded down with stuff. I still struggled in the rocky areas and steep hills. But it proves the point you don't have to spend a lot of money to go for a trail ride and have a lot of fun!

We're both pretty banged up from a parallel lifetime of abuse and neglect.. of scrapes and dings.. and of long trips and short hauls.. in other words... we're all at the same level in the end. Depends on the bike. Most of the bikes made in 1982 were roached long ago, but a few stick around. In 40 years, we'll probably similarly see about 2% of this year's bikes still running. Probably light on 250Fs and heavy on YZ250s and stone-axe thumpers. Come to think of it, that's mostly what survived from 1982 also. Lol

It's hard to imagine a better addition to join the team from RM-ATV/MC than you. Did anyone think there was even a possibility that six clapped-out turd-sickles would survive a thousand mile bash through the desert? I binge watched the entire series and it was amazing and hilarious.

Nice! I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I've been enjoying mine. Yours has 632 thousand? As in 632,000 km?

Back in 1983 I bought a brand new dr 500.The dmv sent me a license plate instead of a green sticker.I rode that bike on the dirt and street. It never gave me to much trouble.I rode it everywhere injury at work my shoulder .Had to sell it still miss it.

Great video, shame that you didn't have a couple of days to fix a few of the more serious issues before the trip but I guess it made it more of an adventure!😉👍👍
