I remember how zhong li mentioned several time about story/history change through the narrative of the story teller, as the one that witnessing the events, I kinda knew why daddy zhong loves to amuse him self listening to different version of his own story at third knock around. The superlative narration also mentioned in Noelle's hangout story. It is interesting watching this kind of multiple narration in game

It can be seen clearly in his first story quest. When he's debating with some historians about facts from Rex Lapis, they're pretty convinced that what they're saying is true because their research lead to it. And these are not uninteligent people, these are scholars with years of study and experience.

I think the lore is meant to mimick how in real life we have many historical documents and other sources, but they are biased, unfull and often plain untrue - that's where the contradictions and uncertainties come from. It's fascinating, and also fucking impossible to figure out.

    Awesome video!
And because I always feel the need to add my five cents:
A very good example of narrative unreliability is the story of Decarabian's fall. We have bits of the story, from various sources. And yet, while they do paint something of a cohesive narrative; everything beyond that remains so very uncertain.
An example: why did the people of Mondstadt rebel against Decarabian? We are told it was because he was a tyrant, and trapped everyone behind a wind barrier. Yet Gunnhildr's grandfather left old Mond. And we are also told that Decarabian was kind. Decarabian had a lover. And the world outside that wind barrier was inhospitable and cold.
In game we have two ways into the city; one marked with symbols of the Lawrence clan (a founding clan of new mond), and one marked with the symbols of Decarabian.
And what does Ceclia garden have to do with the Lawrence clan? And why did Decarabian build a high road up towards Pilos Peak?
What even happened to Decarabian? Where is the corruption a dying or sealed god should create? (does that even exist or is Xiao simply mistaken?)
Venti supplies us with a simple narrative that collapses under closer scrutiny, and proves to be a story; told about events of the past by the greatest storyteller of them all.

  • @transient_moonlight

IMO, Genshin's lore is compelling precisely because it's delivered through stories told by Teyvat's people--it's what happens in reality, and fragmentation and contradicton (and intentionally altering or falsifying documents/recounts/testimonies/etc...) are exactly what happens with history in reality. I'll even g a step further and say that this is how a fantasy world story should be seen in-universe.
From a meta perspective, I wouldn't say that it's just to create buildup (in fact, this degree of fragmentation isn't really necessary for buildup). The uncertainty leads players to fill in the blanks with their own stories (the human brain can't stand information void and WILL try to fill it and erase uncertainty), and especially assign certain motivations to past actions or to why characters would say certain things (guessing other people's intentions is something the brain just *loves* doing), even though that might be contradicted at some point.
It's what makes every player's experience quite unique, and the point of strength of the Soulsborne games narrative formula (down to hiding stories in item descriptions and visual storytelling). Even though Genshin made things more explicit, probably as to not entirely lose people, but falls a bit in the opposite camp for certain aspects (like the artifically verbose dialogues that can feel like thinly veiled exposition).

  • @caparashon
    @caparashon 2 года назад +46

The most unreliable narrator of Genshin is in my opinion the books, which is funny since lore buffs tend to take everything as true until contradicted. We see this in Amber's children book first; Barbatos couldn't have taught birds how to fly, it's just a parable/fable. Zhongli and Xiao have called Rex Incognito and the yaksha book "fanfiction". And while some parts of yaksha lore are confirmed, we don't know for sure what parts of the yaksha cutscene will get Azhdaha'd later in Chasm part 2. Every book about Orobaxi before Enkanomiya lore was wrong or propaganda. We're taking Before Sun and Moon as the true genesis of Teyvat and it's just a matter of time (pun unintended) before something gets refuted. This is fun to me since it's like mythology and history irl, but I also feel frustration like you. We don't even know if those 5 yaksha power rangers were real, but here we are figuring out if Bosacius is electro yaksha from the Chasm/Vermillion set or geo yaksha from the cutscene, for instance, and it drives me MAD

As someone that studied storytelling in games and media and narrative theory, thank you for this!! I found genshin's storytelling and lore execution extremely fascinating where each fragmented piece is always told in a different perspective unlike some other games from an omnipresent and all knowing 3rd party, I'm always confused by what is true and what is not and I'm living for it!!

Even the game itself, about the Characters you have, have some kind of really abrasive story telling but a lot of Character's Voice Lines and even Events show multiple Layer of depth to the characters too. Keqing is very considerate to the ones close to her. Xingqiu acts like a Righteous, Arrogant prick but he has the worst hand-writing and seem to loathe doing Heavy Manual Tasks himself as he's more on Brain. Kazuha doesn't Detest the Shogun because it was his Friend's choice to confront the Shogun herself, but he doesn't turn a blind eye from the Vision Hunt Decree and he let his inheritance be given in the end as he wanted to live a Traveler himself. Eula is just keeping a Facade behind her rash motives, but when it comes to a child who doesn't know about her, she let it slide as he doesn't know about Eula's Heritage or the Lawrence Clan. They outright contradict snippets in the Voicelines and even the characters respectively without making it opposing. Qiqi remembers and outright hates Hu Tao despite her efforts to make up for it and Gorou can't forgive the Shogun and Ei's action after the Vision Hunt Decree yet deathly afraid of her Familiar; Yae Miko. This as an example tells you not everything is not what it seems, which makes obtaining said characters more special, they add more to the narrative in the past, present and even future content.
While I despise Shenhe's Father, she doesn't have any ill will against him and even then, the father itself causes more harm than his Daughter and ended a lot of lives in his own selfish deed. While Shenhe herself fought for her life, not knowing she saved a lot of people before hand without knowing or even has Pure Evil in her. She learned, from Cloud Retainer herself, that her powers can save others despite what she is.
Even Yun Jin, who wanna play and enact Shenhe's life without knowing the Girl in the Tales she's planning to sing about was right beside her all along, in which she wanted to rewrite to story to respect her privacy. But Shenhe refused and let Yunjin the Story as is and refined it after the Main Quest in honor of defending Liyue and prove once again Liyue is now on capable hands by Humans and the Adepti are now confident Liyue doesn't need their protection anymore but there to watch over.

so basically from what we got until today, we could assume that genshin lore was built up following a certain theory, which is Narrative Paradigm? not just a simple "A to Z linear storytelling" but more story within story?
to be honest on my opinion, thats cool. like, really cool. i could imagine if every lore on genshin implemented into quest so we could get the truth of the story, it will sustain the longevity of the game, story-wise, and quest update-wise

In my opinion, Kingdom Hearts franchise also follows that idea, though its more tedious since it involves understanding their main/side/mobile games. Union X, which is the prequel before the entire story, final chapters drops a lore bomb that changes the entire pesepctive of the entire story, in a heartbreaking way.

I discovered my love of lore Through a DnD channel running multiple campains at once in the same world over the course of several years.
Seeing veteran players freak out at the mere mention of a mundane word and newbies unknowingly interact with potentially world ending forces while slowly putting the pieces together as a viewer was an awesome experience.
When it abruptly crached down and burnt to the ground I started playing Genshin to pass the time and the lore of the game is facinating.
I particularly enjoy spotting small or obscure refferences in quest dialogue and item descriptions, I just wish so much lore wasn't time gated behind events.

I have recently really been comparing the difference in storytelling methods used between genshin and honkai, honkai is bombastic, epic, has a plotwist about every hour of gameplay and lets you play all the backstories. While genshin is slow, methodical and based in realism... not saying either is better, its just really interresting that they are so drastically different

Yea, the lore and often the story itself is quite incoherent, especially for more or less casual players, seeing anything even slightly bellow the very top layer of the writers intentions is nearly impossible. Genshin suffers from simply being the type of game it is, having to consistently keep players engaged by new characters, locations and plotlines means that there is little to no time to flesh out stuff properly, its usually relegated to side media, if that.
This is one of the things that bug me the most, in games like this in general, not just Genshin. For many people understanding the story and characters is crucial and the writers need to do everything in their power to make it so their intentions get across, if it doesnt for majority its simply their failure and poor writing. I remember when FF XIII came out, aside for the comments about it being hallways simulator, many considered its story to be incredible convoluted and incomprehensible, especially when coupled with its sequels, I spend hours reading up on wiki and eventually came to adore the story for its intricacies, but the opinion of majority still stands and its a testament to the poor ability of the writing team to tell their story.
Its the same here, even if the script writers rely on excuses such as unreliable narrator, and yes, I do think that in this case its simply and excuse, much like its an excuse in case of wow for example, the main issues are simply meta, its because of the type of game it is and I can only hope that they will find ways to cope with it because otherwise the story will become more and more fragmented and the experience more and more confusing for anyone not following and aware the lore and story they have in their books and artifact lore and such or outside media, its already suffering now and its at the point where the new player experience is so much worse than others that its insane to me.
I like Genshin a lot, but I do not have the trust in the team that they will be able to continually pull this together even if they have the overarching plot down, at the moment its still more or less fine, but I think it will continue to get worse and worse and unlike you I dont believe all this to be fully intentional at all, its simply mistakes on part of the developers in many cases. That being said, when it works, it works great and there are some super awesome moments, in general its a great ride.

      *Long story short;*
Before knows as the Balladeer or Scaramouche --- he was simply a wandering eccenctric. The reason why his appearence is so important because his actions caused negative consequenes on Inazuma's culture and history, and by extension causing the fall of the Kaedehara Clan and affecting the Kamisato clan. He claimed the name Kunikuzushi (Destroyer of Countries) as way to proclaim his own identity, and hunted down the bladesmith families as way to avengence his friend, and give a message to the Ei (Raiden Shogun)
This all plan by Yae Miko, but it was Ayato who planted those poems to guide Kazuha --- and guide him towards to discover what really happened to his clan.

Ok but fr this made me think about D&D and TTRPG lore narratives. Obviously the DM has their own "canon" lore, but PCs are constantly encountering NPCs and are often given little direction on what is true and what isn't. Sure, you can roll an insight check, but there's a chance you get absolutely nothing from that person. I feel like Genshin has similar traits; if only you could roll insight checks on npc and pcs lol.

about the vision thing, i do think celestia wants vision holders to believe the archons give them out. its like a false sense of freedom/blessing because to the people, celestia is just there to watch over them and the archons are the rulers, the ones that set laws in place and protect their nation from dangers. the average person doesnt realize that celestia is the one who pulls the strings in the background. i think the only reason why celestia is feared by the average person is because of the cataclysm; its a recent major part of history that cant really be covered up so easily. it seems that religion/beliefs in teyvat are based around the archons, especially in mondstadt, not celestia.
celestia is more regarded as the "heavens", something higher than the archons but not considered all powerful.....that is until they rain down the wrath of the the gods upon an entire nation that reshapes the entire world. who knows if celestia has done this before and was long forgotten?? was that how the abyss, light, and vishap realm came to be in the first place?? was is once all one realm and then celestia destroyed that singularity?? did the cataclysm shatter that fragile connection each realm has even more?? is that why mutation of khaenri'ah's people truly happened?? through a curse and the destruction of a fragile balance between realms?
and if another cataclysm had happened before khaenri'ah, is that why we only just now found ruins of a civilization older than khaenri'ah in the deepest parts of the chasm???

(Mi)HoYo(verse) is making genshin into its own fantasy world, not a fantasy story. You are collecting clues through random notes, people, books, and relics of the past, as well as excepting the fact that some of these might be unreliable, particularly the people you speak to. The annoying thing is, it makes it so difficult to get a cohesive outlook that way.

I suspect Hoyo intentionally fragmented the lore partly to encourage content creators like you. If things were, frankly, more well written, we wouldn't have all these vibrant lore communities. Same with combat. ICD, elemental gauge etc. theres no proper tutorial, and it drove lots of theorycrafting and audiences to watch guides. Very sneaky and efficient way to build hype, while buying time for them to properly flesh out the story in events/quests, and get away with saving dev resources cos the community does its work for them.
