I think her story quest will be heavily tied to the chasm, maybe she'll give us some sumeru lore as a treat. OR she will be the main focus of a future world or archon quest similar to how Shenhe and Diluc's story quests where integral parts of the main story.
There were some discussions in Chinese community whether Yelan's design is Liyue-ish or not. And an explanation that can be accepted by most is that, in lore, she is some kinda intelligence middleman and secret agent, therefore she naturally wants to hide her cultural characteristics so that she won't be noticed when she tries to sneak into other countries. So in general, she looks not so Liyue-ish, but has some small Liyue-ish details with her. The jacket actually give me some 20th century Hongkong gangster movies vibe. In those movies, the gangster bosses always like to drape a jacket or a coat over their shoulders.
u do realize GAME mechanics doesnt allow characters to actually change their cloths and underwear right... for the sake of lore.. i highly doubt anyone is not changing cloths everyday.. and all people would simply not only wear the closth they packed when travelign b utt also the cloths they bought in the place they traveled too... so personally i think the clothing argument is utter nonsense and foolish what im saying is. .. ya'll putting too much focus in to the cloth in terms of the story.. 😂 also to "hide" ur culture to blend in with another culture means u have to KNOW that culture so hiding is pointless as anyone would simple just fit in with the place they are currently residing in... conclusion.. no npc ever changes cloth for game mechanics.. i highly doubt that actually reflective of the lore.. so im saying ya'll are looking WAY TO DEEP.. xD

Seeing more "shadowy" characters to the game would be a great addition to the world building. Makes it seem that despite the current peace between nations (somewhat) there is still distrust between them and each nation requires special individuals for intelligence and counter-intelligence, it makes the nations more believable.
I see no reason to doubt Ningguang's judgement that she can trust Yelan. However, I wouldn't be surprised if, like Kaeya, she hangs out with some very shady connections as part of her intelligence network.
All these Liyue characters and im still waiting to see how long it takes before we get a Mondstatder. Last one was Eula iirc so its been... What a year?
@@jadesides51 he's on an expedition in the dandelion sea in mondstadt so personally, i dont think we'll see him in any other region. i do think we'll see him within the 3.x patches however. there is potential for the dandelion sea being added as another sub region for mondstadt.
Given that sumeru is coming out after the summer we might not see a new mondstadt character for a while, but that could be untrue, we got 3 liyue characters after inazuma came out

my theory is that she's the gambler from the gambler set and that she's actually a ghost.The set's story is very short but it does mention that the gambler is a woman and judging by the design of the watch, she was probably shot near her chest. Yelan's design has a dice and she's called a phantom but that's really all my evidence. Maybe i've been farming the dragspine domain for too long 😅

She is mostly a gambler since the tea house in Liyue are so freaking hostile. Probably might one of her sources of information since you need to have connections to the underground. She might be a good starting point to the Chasm and possibly are way in to Sumeru since she has been investigating in the Chasm.
Yelan and Shenhe are my favourite characters in game so far. Their designs are absolutely gorgeous and I have a feeling Yelan will have a shady backstory that explains why she was so interested in the chasm.

The maiden beloved was such a passive character waiting and growing old, nothing like Signora who set herself on fire to seek revenge on the ones who killed Rostam. She already has the crimson witch of flames set and the stainless bloom from the pale flame set. Just connected the wrong character to the wrong story. The Gambler set story is very vague but does specify the main character to be female. The only details it could provide is potential insight on how she operates. She only takes her chances when rolling the dice but usually uses trickery in most things, and places importance in keeping a calm and collected mind no matter the situation. Which sounds reasonable to imagine her being like that, considering Xiangling says that she eats Jueyun chilies raw meaning very little can faze her.
I think it would be quite sick if the dice ornament links her with the "casino-esque" place in Liyue known as Yansheng Teahouse... I mean the place literally has bouncer like guards at the door. Plus, it might be a good place to gather info from as her ministry of civil affairs work.
Maybe not Fatui infiltrating the ministry, but someone from the ministry working to infiltrate fatutu? If they have this much influence in Liyue after all, someone must be investigating them, right?
Before watching: I had this crack theory half-joke that she's Pulcinella because they both have a leg flap, similar colours, fluff around neck, and Yelan has multiple identities, and Pulcinella's face is hidden in Travail video which could be for a twist reveal, and I think some people said her clothes look like someone from Fontaine or Snezhnaya

Honestly if she is Colombina, I hope they incorporate card symbols into Arlecchino's design. It would give them a connection as they both love to play games with those around them.
It could be that she could be like Yae Miko: accepts the demands of others, helps them out, seemingly freely... yet asks even higher form of payment of her own after the deed is done, usually in the form of intel. Due to her being in with the gov't, people hardly have a chance to refuse those demands. Which makes her all the more valuable to keep as a friend.

i don't think she is a fatui harbinger for the simple reason that it seems kinda pointless that out of the 11 members the first 2 which were made playable are both hydro bow users
Feel like she’s connected to the Fontaine Archon, hence her mysterious vibe. And eager for justice since she works for the Ministry of Civil Affairs. And I have a hunch part of Fontaine will be available immediately after Sumeru like a one two punch. But yeah, looks have a Liyue appearance. But based off leaks, some of her character doesn’t appear to be from Liyue at all.
The only thing I can think of is how fancy her clothes is. It feels like she belongs in some kind of rich family. Also, after pointing out the dice she wears on her neck, it's possible she might has some connection to gambling. She probably gambles a lot.😅
there's a lot of people think that she's a yaksha. i don't think she is. i do agree with your theory that she is the shadow for the ministry of civil affairs. the fact that she suddenly appear in the chasm quest, maybe she is watching us while watching the fatui movement since chasm is an important area that relates to the archon war and the cataclysm. so she's making sure that they don't do anything reckless that can harm liyue but in shadow so she can know the reason why the fatui is there.
My theory is that she is related to Xingqiu (kinda like chungus), as a part of famity that went into gambling depth and was banished/imprisoned. Yelan ring on wrist could be some type of slave spell that will cut her hand if she goes against the master (civil affairs), till she pays off the famity debth. A bowman with no hand, cant use the bow any more.

Damn, nobody seem to realise Yelan’s design is actually heavily based on early-mid 20th century Shanghainese fashion, when costal cities like Shanghai are culturally heavily influenced by western culture. During this period, Shanghai received a nickname of “Paris of the East”. As a Shanghainese myself I immediately recognised this design trait. So in a sense, you’re definitely correct in a sense calling Yelan’s design modernised Liyue style

i haven't finished the Chasm's archon quest yet but, from the Chasm Quest & from lines of my Liyue characters, I suspect Yelan is either the Qixing's spymaster or shadow head of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. I see Yelan as being the Liyue equivalent of Kamisato Ayato & Kaeya (not Diluc, though both use their commercial enterprises as part of their underground intelligence networks). I have assumed that Yelan's running of that Exclusive Teahouse (cough gambling parlour cough) we players are prevented from entering is Just Canon, though it may not be openly known (appearing there as a mere customer, perhaps?) to enable her to hold an official role within the Ministry &/or the Qixing without censure.

I'm convinced that she's the Yaksha that got tasked to defend the Chasm during the cataclysm 500 years ago. Looking back at the design of the blue Yaksha in Xiao's promo vid... Knowing the story about a Yaksha trapped in the Chasm but no Yaksha was found there, just her lurking around on her own... Xiao commented on her prowess... Protecting Liyue from the shadow, being mysterious and all, watching over people's activities... I dunno it all felt connected to me, but I guess this comment will age like milk real soon, lol

The secrecy feels like the men in black or spies & counter spies. Her being an archer might give us the sneaky assassin sniper archetype.

We had shady since Kaeya. And the Liyue Qixing literally have the entire Inn run by their informants.

I doubt outside nations can infiltrate the Fatui. Seems to be they are stringent on such membership.

It could be that she could be like Yae Miko: accepts the demands of others, helps them out, seemingly freely... yet asks even higher form of payment of her own after the deed is done, usually in the form of intel. Due to her being in with the gov't, people hardly have a chance to refuse those demands. Which makes her all the more valuable to keep as a friend.

i don't think she is a fatui harbinger for the simple reason that it seems kinda pointless that out of the 11 members the first 2 which were made playable are both hydro bow users
Feel like she’s connected to the Fontaine Archon, hence her mysterious vibe. And eager for justice since she works for the Ministry of Civil Affairs. And I have a hunch part of Fontaine will be available immediately after Sumeru like a one two punch. But yeah, looks have a Liyue appearance. But based off leaks, some of her character doesn’t appear to be from Liyue at all.

there's a lot of people think that she's a yaksha. i don't think she is. i do agree with your theory that she is the shadow for the ministry of civil affairs. the fact that she suddenly appear in the chasm quest, maybe she is watching us while watching the fatui movement since chasm is an important area that relates to the archon war and the cataclysm. so she's making sure that they don't do anything reckless that can harm liyue but in shadow so she can know the reason why the fatui is there.

My theory is that she is related to Xingqiu (kinda like chungus), as a part of famity that went into gambling depth and was banished/imprisoned.
Yelan ring on wrist could be some type of slave spell that will cut her hand if she goes against the master (civil affairs), till she pays off the famity debth.

-We know from the cinematics that the electro Yaksha betrayed, sealed and maybe "killed" the hydro Yaksha.
-It was also heavily implied that a Yaksha got sealed in the Chasm.
-Then every time we saw Yelan, the crew in the chasm asked us if we found the lost Yaksha.
-We were told and reminded so many times about the legend of the lost Yaksha in the chasm.
-I thought it was quite obvious that we are supposed to encounter her "the hydro Yaksha" in the chasm.

Damn, nobody seem to realise Yelan’s design is actually heavily based on early-mid 20th century Shanghainese fashion, when costal cities like Shanghai are culturally heavily influenced by western culture. During this period, Shanghai received a nickname of “Paris of the East”. As a Shanghainese myself I immediately recognised this design trait. So in a sense, you’re definitely correct in a sense calling Yelan’s design modernised Liyue style

i haven't finished the Chasm's archon quest yet but, from the Chasm Quest & from lines of my Liyue characters, I suspect Yelan is either the Qixing's spymaster or shadow head of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. I see Yelan as being the Liyue equivalent of Kamisato Ayato & Kaeya (not Diluc, though both use their commercial enterprises as part of their underground intelligence networks).
I have assumed that Yelan's running of that Exclusive Teahouse (cough gambling parlour cough) we players are prevented from entering is Just Canon, though it may not be openly known (appearing there as a mere customer, perhaps?) to enable her to hold an official role within the Ministry &/or the Qixing without censure.

personally, I thought Yelan had something to do with the adepti/. There was something about rumors of a yaksha in the Chasm, and Yelan's design is pretty similar to that of the hydro yaksha. Plus, the 2.7 promational art has a huge picture of Xiao's face, so putting two and two together, it seems like Yelan may have ties to the hydro yaksha

I'm pretty sure the ministry of civil affairs are like the local Fatui of liyue. And there is a phrase that reminds me of the way the Fatui interact with the ministry: "even the traveling dragon doesn't pick a fight with the local snake"
