Burzum was more atmospheric than most black metal bands those days.
What are you talking about? Todays Black Metal is more atmospheric than anytime in the past.
@@fiftyakaMighty That is what I said. "THOSE DAYS" not today, now there are too many atmospheric bands that are more atmospheric than black metal.
@@IHATEDRIVING2 they are barely "atmospheric" they dont put you into any kind of atmosphere, their music sucks to much.
@@gwennnnnnnnnnnn You are talking about now days atmosphreic black metal bands?
@Bartosz Biniek i agree. the atmosphere or spirit in the 90's black metal can never comes back. many bands tried this but nowadays there is to much computer involved and i like imo the pure materials like you can hear in burzum
Varg always been completely immersive, one of the rarest example, you could put headphones and sleep at night with Varg’s Music.
hahaha it's funny that you said that cause i put jesu dod everytime i can't sleep, it's so immersive
I do this every night
I have been fallen asleep while listening to burzum ever since I was a child
I thought i was the only one falling asleep with key to the gate..
I did. And slept like a baby. There is no better sleep than with "Rundgang..."
Varg was actually like a musical genius. If he hadn't gone to jail and let his skills slip and stop caring about them its hard to think about how amazing his music would have become.
Is* a musical genius, not was. Don’t go killing him off haha!
What do you mean? He made and released albums while he was locked up. He was in a very humane prison where he was permitted to take as many strolls through the forest a he pleased.
@@cooldude4376 If by humane you mean spending months in near-constant isolation that yeah I guess. Why do you think despite good conditions suicide rates were so bad in the '90s and early '00s. Just watch some of Vargs videos on the subject.
His music was just as great when he got out of jail. Belus is a fucking masterpiece, and Fallen is nothing to be ashamed of either
@@jspirmann isolation in a nice little house where you're allowed to use knives for cooking and walk around freely is much better than a US prison.
Varg's music was always about the feeling and atmosphere - guitar or ambient.
Black metal was always about the feeling and atmosphere*
Youre saying was, like he died or something.
@@z.s.n. Burzum doesn't exist anymore, and the rest he is playing is pure garbage
Elfo you’re talking like there was no new Burzum album in March 😁
Varg is/was black metal. I don’t agree with all of his opinions and I don’t know if I believe his side of the story but Burzum has a feel and atmosphere that no other band captured
Who wins ??
Let´s find out !!
i would love to see you cover borgir's blessings upon the throne of tyranny both guitars, one of the most brutal songs in bm. Also as a greek you blew my mind with the rotting christ cover, a classic.
Gotta go with Rotting Christ & Samael. Cheers and well done, man. 👍🏻
Varg
we are
Everyone else.
varg managed to make stuff sound evil without that element of cheese that most other bands still had. Jon (Dissection) i think had a similar gift
Ripping your band's name and song titles from The Hobbit is as cheesy as it can get. Great riffs, though.
@@paragorn206 makes sense though since Varg was very into folklore
@@paragorn206 it wasn't in the early 90s. most people hadn't heard of it
Dissection is the best black metal ❤
Man something about Vargs riffs are just so special. He had the perfect combination of atmosphere, a creepiness and disturbing sound, and brutality. When I think of black metal, Burzum's atmosphere and feeling of despair comes to mind before evil tremolo picking. I love the guy, quite a genius
👍
Burzum will always be one of a kind. Very dark, ambient and atmospheric. He's a genius tbh.
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
totally agree, what he did as a 19 year old easily shows he's a genius
And a madman
@@johnathan6489 Those often go hand in hand.
@@Terra101 Yes.
black metal makes me wanna live in the woods. I'm not complaining...
Need a friend to live with in woods?
Dead?
Burzum hands down one of the best black metal bands ever. Love him or hate him, Varg had the chops down
I just love him
an extremely skilled musician, shame about his personality and views...
His personality and views are what make the music.
real. i hate to say that, but that nazi bitch is a fucking god when hes grabbing a guitar
Strange to here them with good recording quality
Just listen to this video with your phone in your washing machine, fixed
haha yessss
Also with competent playing
OceanMachine man I did that next to the toilet flushing. I think that‘s the Secret of the sound
@@Camicente just tried. 100% worth it
Varg lets notes breathe
Very true. As later albums used less gain, you can really hear his technique and finesse also, theres so much thought applied into harmony and groove also.
There is something just hypnotic about Varg's music.
I think after 15 years I finally realized why i was so picky in my choices over BM bands
Because I simply couldn’t listen to 80% of the bands other than Burzum
His riffs sound so pure, melodic and dark at same time
Yes there are many bands that have beautiful songs, but they are selective
This video proves this perfectly
One single man (Burzum) basically puts all others into corner
Almost every single track is winning
i was like you there are a lot of bands that have gem albums smothered by lack luster ones.
you just have to sit through a lot of 4/10 stuff to find what you like.
Funnily enough I can't stand listening to about 80% of Burzum! XD
Dissection is a thousand times better than Burzum
Dissection is king burzum is 2nd place
His screaming sucks though that's the only thing. If his music was all instrumental it would be a hundred times better
Burzum riffs are amazing
Dude your tone is SO GOOD
Thanks mate !
Daniel Souza Agreed.
Was thinking the same damn thing
I'm kinda bummed out that you didn't "stab" the "other guy" during the Mayhem bit
He was on his way too.
The "other guy" can try----
But he is gonna fail miserably
😂🤣😂😂😂🤣😈😈😈
Hahahaha dude I was thinking the same thing.
or play bass
Varg is an outstanding, OUTSTANDING songwriter. Too bad though you didn't feature anything from Umskiptar. This album is jam-packed with gorgeous riffs.
Varg, lord of the riffs
Varg always said that it’s more important for him to create an atmosphere
Varg also wrote most of his riffs before he was in 21....
he also went to prison before the age of 21
Point?
So did most of the guys in the scene
@@Toshiro_Mifune also helped to rid the scene of Euronimous and his poserism. Neah, varg is kinda the embodiment of the scene, intolerant, dark and grim, massively antichristian (yes satanism is part of the christian belief) but in the real way, not a show for the camera.
@@ProPatriaRO So, essentially, he's a piece of shit.
This video was so good, it makes me want to subscribe 23 times in self defense
Underrated comment 😂😂😂
I must say, being a former swedish black (and death) metal musician myself who found these awesome bands and albums in younger years its actually extra interesting listening on the riffs you pull off when you've really gotten the extra length on the whole recorded setup of you vs you and even reacting to each take! There's not a lot of riffs I dislike but Burzum's always put me in a trance, that's the difference between Varg's and all other BM.
Must...stab...Euronymous
Misunderstood Bean Honestly this is getting old and boring... can we just appreciate Varg’s music without constantly talking about the things he’s done in his life, which must be separated from the music in any case
Misunderstood Bean Must....make.....overused joke
The BM knockoffs spend more time on their makeup
That's because Burzum made electronic trance musik in disguise as Black Metal 🤘
I don't know why Varg's music get's such a bad rap all of a sudden. Posers complain about Vargs politics, complain about his screams in War, it's always the meme aspect they complain about. But Burzum is the all original one man black metal, Atmospheric Black Metal, Pagan black metal, Depressive black metal band, original dungeon synth band. Varg has contributed so much to black metal's sound and direction only a poser, RABM, entry level kid would deny it.
Quorthon did it first and did it better. Varg stole his whole schtick from Bathory. Burzum is good, but not original.
@Chadúlean Perspective Consider watching the metal mythos on Bathory. There are multiple examples of what and how given throughout. ruclips.net/video/TF50yMyw7FE/видео.html
When I see War, this is huh... WOW
I listen to BM, because I like black metal. Dont really give a fck what people think about it or what the artist themselves think. Unless those ideas are making badass riffs and has something to do with the music itself.
It gets a bad wrap from me cause the recordings sound like absolute fucking dog shit. I'd totally listen to Burzum if it werent just lo-fi noise bullshit. The music is good, but the purposely lo-fi sound of black metal is the absolute worst part about black metal.
Considering how many great riffs Varg created by himself,he easily wins this one imo🤘 Great job with these videos btw!!!
Quorthon vs. all next please!
I agree with this!!!!
Finally a knowledgable comment.
Quorthon was a genius!
But Quorthon versus what? Thrash? Black? Viking?
@@FuraFaolox Quorthon versus Black & Viking. His two Thrash albums are really...mediocre, sorry. :/ And I love Quorthon/Bathory, but "Octagon" and "Requiem" weren't really good.

Agreed Brother
This video totally confirms my love for Burzum.
That Belus VS Watain comparison is pretty strong. I know we're not allowed to like the later according to the scene police, but they've certainly captured some out of this world atmosphere on some of their pieces.
Glad you put Samael in there. Everyone shit cans them because they are no longer black metal but their first two albums and possibly their 3rd are amazing black metal and very dark!
Ceremony of Opposites was a great album
Varg Vikernes is slower but BLACKER than others.
Yes that's so true man. It sounds so much more sinister when playing it slow like he does!
For sure. Speed can definitely be a hindrance for this kind of music.
He's actually pretty bright and not black at all. Pretty much the opposite.
That doesnt even mean anything....
Ppl don't know what real darkness is. It doesnt lie in flesh. All flesh fades away. Eternity is the cusp of true terror. A terror for people for that think they know terror to speak of terror so easily, which they quickly rebuke due to their preconceived notions when they understand absolutely nothing of spiritual matters. If they did they wouldn't say the things they do. Deep down everyone knows the price of Hell wasn't worth the price of this world. No one takes pleasure in true darkness. No one. It wasn't meant for the flesh. All this music lies in pleasure and it's this dark pleasure that Satan makes people think they are cool but they understand nothing. It's quite boring to those who really understand what true darkness is and it's not necessarily the flesh. Yes its complex. This isn't our reality mortals. . Its God's. But you dont believe.... heh.. They can't see with the eye that makes them see....
Varg's riffs are mostly less technical but all the more atmospheric. They always seem to tell a story.
Great video !
Yeah and that is the stories of role playing games for the most part. His lyrics esp on his earlier albums makes you think of lord of the rings more than once that is for sure hehe
great historical review, great to see how the genre progressed over the years, thx :)
Burzum has this certain special distinctive sound that just screams pure menace yet blatanyly ordered riffs. Its just so amazing
Man, I did not expect mgła.
Great video, greetings from Poland.
Thanks man !
Mgła is one of these things I happen to discover during the lockdown times. Goes very well with polish doughnuts for breakfast. Thanks for the video, you're doing great job👊
Polish women are something I discovered back in '17. Still not regretting.
Hahh
Including Mgła is a kick ass idea because their main inspiration source has always been Burzum. They took the path shaped by Varg, it’s the same melodic, melancholic and contemplative approach to black metal
I liked that you included later Burzum like Belus. Those albums are seriously underrated.
Fallen is one of my fav albums ever
Belus is my favourite Burzum album
@@_DeadEnd_ I didn't get that all. I don't even think of them as metal songs; moreso Varg going off on an electric pagan/folk rock tangent. The vocals are interesting because he abandoned the black metal rasp/shrieks for indigenous chants and clean singing.
Belus is one of the most important albums in my life.
Needed some Umskiptar as well though
Just discovered your channel yesterday and I really like it ! I'm not really into guitar, actually more into drum playing, but seeing you playing is really interesting and it helps focusing on guitar which is really interesting and almost makes me want to learn it :D

thylordrexth666 Transylvanian Hunger to me always represented a pinnacle of black metal

I'm going to turn this into a Spotify playlist for my winter walks. Thank you! Awesome selection and you are astonishingly skilled!
Varg was really genius in creating music. Just remember how many part changes the “Key to the gate” song. DarkThrone n Burzum were masters in their subject

Yes indeed !
He's sloppy and overrated.
if Varg is underrated then Metallica is fucking underground
I think he is very overated really
overrated because being Church burner and murder, not as guitarist
You are so much fun to watch! Love your stuff! You are the best guitar playing discovery I've had in the last few years! Such good choice of a variety of songs and styles. Would love more Yngwie too though you have a fair bit! Somehow you have gone in quite a different direction since you did those.
This is gold! Really cool!

To be honest burzum riffs are the gloomiest and most interesting ones

Burzum is just unmatched when it comes to that dark, atmospheric and overwhelming feeling
Nice! That "Jeg faller" 9:55 riffs brings me very nice nostalgic memories...
this one i like even before watching!

Lol, same.
I love this series of videos. It's incredibly interesting to hear the riffs one after the other, as it brings a perspective you don't really get when listening to the various songs in their entirety. Great concept. I also love the subtle nuances of your facial expressions and body language. Would love to see a bit more of this play out in these videos. I laugh out loud at some of these (as my gf looks at me like 'what's so funny?... only us old-schoolers get it, I suppose). Anyway, keep up the awesomeness! \m/

John Doe it’s great.
This was a great walk through the music of my youth, a really great idea and especially Burzum is my favorite band ☺
I love that you and your twin brother make these videos together. A family that jams together stays together 🤘
Greetings from Brazil. So much fun to watch !!! Thank you !
Varg's riffs are just different on a spiritual level. Sounds pretentious but it's true. Like it's not even metal or something. En Ring Til Aa Herske was missing btw. Good job.
I think it makes sense regarding your "Like it's not even metal or something" comment, since (as far as I understand it) Varg Vikernes wasn't that much into metal at all, but more into "experimental music", techno and ambient stuff. This is actually one of the reasons I liked a lot of the old black metal bands - it seemed like they were experimental musicians and not "just" metal.
@@lelandbobpalmer definitely. Before RUclips censored his channel he made a couple of videos about his top 10 metal albums and his top non metal albums/music. Very interesting. Fortunately I was able to save the list and here it is:

DISSECTION !!!!!!!! 🏴
What sticks out the most, is that Varg always had more sense for composition than other black metal acts. The way he shapes riffs and puts them into context of a song is exceptional.
He crushed everything here except Darkthrone because of the brilliant simplicity of that riff from Transilvanian Hunger. So simple yet so effective. In contrast to Immortal's riff which is just plain basic, uninspired and lacks rhythm.
But Dissection, Emperor?
@@George-cd9ik To answer that, first I have to say that I enjoy complex and intricate music (from prog-metal to jazz and fusion), but not in black metal.
Fenriz explained it perfectly in interviews and demonstrated in his songs: the point of black metal ("Norwegian" second wave) was to distance itself from death metal production, imagery and empty technicality. This "limitation" allowed talented people in the scene to explore simple and "primitive" riff structures which ultimately gave us Dunkelheit, Transilvanian Hunger and Bergtrollets Hevn.
Dissection is a great band for what it is, but being technically and atmospherically stuck between black and death metal, it excels in none of those.
Emperor is fine and certainly infuential, but their music often seemed to rely on overuse of synthesizers to achieve atmosphere and hide mediocre riffs.
I couldn't agree more
Perhaps but Mgła smashes anything Varg has done.
@@Odie50000 Mgla never did anything for me. I heard all of that music before, performed by better musicians. There is apparently some hype around their drummer. As a drummer myself, overuse of paradiddle variations on ride cymbal doesn't impress me, which seems to be Darkside's signature move. If you want truly aggresive, merciless yet techically apt drumming, Cryptic Winter's work on "To Embrace the Corpses Bleeding" is unmatched.
I could further elaborate on their mediocre riffs, characterless vocal, nonexistant atmosphere and laughable lyrics (all Varg's strong points by the way, from chilling inhuman screams that set him apart from the bunch in the 90's to the enveloping dark atmosphere present in his early albums) but you get the picture.
To be clear, I'm a Slav, and I am very proud that a Polish artist can be so highly thought of in black metal circles, but I can't lie and say that I find particular value in Mgla as a band.
This is really good battle. Thanks!
Somente clássicos! Saudades da minha juventude regada ao bom black metal...mas ainda hoje mantenho esse gosto, sempre!

Bathory would have won by far
@ŇøHă Ģ. You just can't disagree, Bathory is at least in the top 5 in every single genre he's experimented with, plus the creator of viking metal and one of the main inspirations for black metal.
HAIL QUORTHON ! ! !
Cool video, but I really wanted 'Varg' to switch to a synthesizer at some point to confuse the other guy.

Varg's music is very simple but its spirit reaches you. It is unique and no band can imitate it. Take " Inn i Slottet Fra Droemmen", for example. Most of the song is a two-tone riff but when it is connected to the lyrics, it creates an atmosphere of traveling at a fast pace, then the riff changes to a more complicated one - reaching the dreamt goal. Simple and deep. Nowadays all those new pretentious BM bands with perfect technique and nice records feel empty inside. I try listening to their music and get no message because there is none. They are posers who lack Varg's spirit. Varg's music is pure poetry.
so true
You know, and I know..
that's why there is no good burzum cover at all. they can't give the same feeling as Varg. Same as Darkthrone but even there Varg's influence is so much
@Inside Barry's Mind I like it.

Loved it🔥🔥 keep it up man🤘🤘
Hearing darkthrone was fresh, this was such a good idea! \m/
Say what you will about Varg, but you can't deny the fact the man has some talent. Songs like Budstikken, Glemselens Elv, My Journey to the Stars, and Dunkelheit (to name a few) really highlight what he does best (that being both epic and melodic, as well as slow and melancholic). Doesn't hurt that he also let's his notes "breathe" and sound out, as well as throwing in some stuff you'd usually only see on an acoustic guitar. The guy is a creative genius when it comes to music in my opinion. He really does create some timeless classics, I still pop on Filosofem and Burzum/Aske almost daily.
He uses classical folk music chords
@dazzerstar aye, he may not be the fastest in black metal, the most technical, or the most "kvlt", but he more than makes up for it with stunning writing. But at the end of the day, there really is some magic there that you just can't quite put your finger on.
I totally agree.
Also his screams were very unique, very distinctive from the other bands, even now.

Varg’s “anti-leads” as he calls them have a lot more emotion from their atmospheric effect
Awesome! Good Work! 🤘🏻
We know Varg at least kills Mayhem.
Zing!

The mixing here is so much better than most of the original albums!
Who else kind of wishes there were burzum recordings in such good quality?
This is a heckuva argument for Burzum superiority. The riffs are crazy, I never realized.
Some of the riffs on Spell of Destruction are THE most sinister riffs in Black Metal, I literally feel them put me under a black spell whenever I hear them, and have yet to encounter any other riff in BM that has that same effect on me.
On that alone, Varg wins for me 😁
this is a great source of new bands for me, thanks m8
The video production is actually wild!
though i'm not into black metal anymore it was nice to see, cool video, and yes Varg is all about amtosphere, maybe i'm into atmosphere as much as i'm now because i used to love his music
