The idea with "black metal" was to create something unique. Every band in that scene wanted to be as original as possible. It was a reaction to the death metal scene where every band sounded the same.
Well, Euronymous was much more influenced by Sodom and Venom, so the style is more agressive and close to Thrash Metal, and Varg, you can ear it, have more influence (first 2 records) by Bathory and i hear a lot of Iron Maiden on him, so... different styles, both very good
Do you agree with Euronymous' views? cause he was as big if not a bigger shitlord than Varg. And at least Varg believes in his blood and heritage than sending death threats and being a tryhard.
@@paulr935 Euronymous was clearly terrible too and a lot of people in the scene aren't fans of him, his own bandmates have bad things to say about him, and I've read about terrible thing he's done to Dead and manipulating him.

I understand your preference for Burzum's style but Euronymous was the creator of the classic riff of Norwegian black metal (the initial riff of Freezing Moon is killer), Norwegian black metal is unthinkable without its existence.
@@Euronymous80 Yeah I really thought about that but I don't just attribute greatness to innovation but also development and improvement. That's why I rank Megadeth above Metallica or Death above Possessed or Darkthrone above Mayhem. At specific instances in time I'd rank differently though.
@@FDHChidori Of course, Mayhem and Euronymous created the sound, and other bands were in charge of giving it variety and enriching it, on that I completely agree.Only I was telling you that at least for me it is difficult to imagine a Norwegian scene without Euronymous because he was practically the main influence of this, in some way or another what we hear and like are variants of the sound what he was pioner(Bathory sound is some diferent).

Euronymous was a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter, and there is no denying that he inspired hundreds of bands and countless of guitarists around the world. However, there's something special and archaic about Varg's riffs. They feel sad, forlorn, and like they're centuries old. It creates a better atmosphere overall and it definitely sets up an emotion of sadness and loss for many of his songs. There are some, however, that punch you in the face, like Lost Wisdom's opening riff and the main riff for War. Either way, they were/are both incredible musicians and I respect their contribution to metal; I will say nothing about either of them as people. There's so much fog around what truly happened and the circumstances of the early black metal scene. I feel they were both at fault for what went down in Norway in the 90's. As I said before though, both are incredible musicians, and I believe it is important to separate the art from the artist. Art takes on its own life after it is created, and if it reaches enough people, the art becomes so far removed from the artist that it can be taken for what it is without regard for who the creator was or is as a person. I'm sure they helped each other with comimg out with some new riffs at one point , Varg mentioned it in one of his Vids about how he recorded his albums.
Very nice video, I particularly appreciated your picking technique: precise, smooth and seemingly effortless, concentrating all the momentum on the wrist. Excellent tremolo picking, congratulations!
Both very underrated guitarists, can you imagine of both had continued to play together and even make Music? Say what you want about Varg, he believes in what he believes, so does Dave Mustaine, etc, but he's a very gifted Musician, Euronymous left a huge mark on metal w Mayhem, two great talents of the guitar in Metal, no doubt. Everyone has tried making riffs like this today is called ''Black Metal''.
euronymous tends to have more contagious riffs which is something very good and Varg tends to have more atmospheric riffs, i like much Euro riffs but my vote will certainly go for Varg
First of all, you absolutely killed it!! Secondly, there are parts where I like Euronymous’s riffs more...but for the majority, Varg’s riffs are preferable. They are more rooted and crisp. More bare and eerie to the ear and soul.
Sadly, you didn't use some of Varg's best riffs. (My Journey to the Stars, Snu Mikrokosmos Tegn (the ending), Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament, Key to the Gate).
I love how Varg-centric this is.. given that he also played on most of the Mayhems songs and also contributed some riffs with Snorre to DMDS! Good work, man!!
I mean it still has that classic black metal treble sound but I can hear the bass when you chug too. Listening to their old records is like listening to white noise. You really have talent in mixing
Great idea! I've seen similar videos for different genres, but this is the first I've seen for black metal. It would be awesome if you approached some other bands too. Keep up the good work! 🤘
God damn it I love both so much. I'd say for the riffs chosen in this particular battle I prefer more of Euronymous's. Life Eternal is so insanely good.
I was always drawn to Vargs riffs when I was younger but there’s something about Euronymous riffs that’s just sound so archetypal to me. He recorded two albums and with those two records cast such a huge shadow over the entire second wave. P.S. I think the intro to Chainsaw Gutsfuck was actually a Necrobutcher riff. He’s talked a lot about how they used to alternate writing riffs back in the day and how they both made sure that the bass/guitar always got a fair showing in the song.
They were going for two completely different moods. Euro wanted to sound ugly and brutal and aggressive and varg wanted to sound melancholic and melodic. I honestly like them both the same,

I think Varg's music hit deeper emotionally and he's more of a true artist. That said, I will give it to both Euronomous and Varg that De Mysteris Dom Sathanas is one of my favorite black metal songs ever and the guitar, bass, and vocal harmonies together make a masterpiece in beautifully evil music composition.
Your playing is fucking awesome man! I love your tone! personally I’m a bigger Varg fan just cause I tend to lean more towards the atmospheric and emotional side of black metal, but I also love a Euronymous-type violent riff as well every now and then, it really just depends how I’m feelin
Vargs riffs are more dark and cold imho. I like both and i wish i could see them playing together today.
Actually Euronymous is the one that is dark and cold now 😜😜😜
Euronymous and Varg both were excellent. Varg's riffs, of course, are more complicated, but that just shows the beauty of black metal revolution.
When De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas played, the cat sitting on my lap started purring. No joke! 😄
Cats are good like that. :)
When De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas started playing my cat ran off to burn some churches. 🤘🤘
Pelle actually hated cats xd
Pelle would have liked that 😬
Pagan fears is badass but besides that exception, I prefer Vags style.
what about life eternal.. dude the solo in the original is outta space..
Hail Vag!🤘
Agreed Pagan fears is one of the most badass riffs ever
How about sarcofago or blasphemy
@@nikothomasson They Fuckin’ Rule man! 🤘🐐🤘
I always preferred mayhem to burzum but I also love euronymous's style more maybe coz I found mayhem first and they was the first black metal band i found but everything from their beginning to end to beginning again just made them stand out to me more
Euronymous obviously had some death metal influences, whereas Varg is really going for the DnD Mordor vibe 100%
No one wants to talk about how the life eternal riff was literally one of the best
Right? Sounds evil
Isn’t it vargs riff?

I'm sure they helped each other with comimg out with some new riffs at one point , Varg mentioned it in one of his Vids about how he recorded his albums.
Almost 12 minutes of out-of-this-world freaking absolute masterpieces with awesome sound! Thank you!
Varg and Euronymous aside, these riffs are cold. Some true shredding, and dark atmospheric work 🤘
Fantastic! Excellent playing as always. I liked the fact that you captured them both looking unhappy to be on the same screen too!

The fact that Ludwig Van Beethoven recognizes them as such good musicians is just one more reason to listen to black metal.
If you can separate the music from the art / dont give a shit about personal beliefs of musicians then why even bring it up

euronymous tends to have more contagious riffs which is something very good and Varg tends to have more atmospheric riffs, i like much Euro riffs but my vote will certainly go for Varg
yeah war is so atomospheric..
@@unspecifiied3627 The riff on War was ripped off from Bathory's Necromancy.
First of all, you absolutely killed it!! Secondly, there are parts where I like Euronymous’s riffs more...but for the majority, Varg’s riffs are preferable. They are more rooted and crisp. More bare and eerie to the ear and soul.
Both are amazing, tough battle of the Black Metal riff. But for me It's Varg all the way. Just has that true Black Metal spirit.
It's the opposite
This is BEAUTIFUL! Thank you SO MUCH!
Hell yeahhh ! Great video ! Cool playing and nice sound 🤟🤟
Imma go with euronymous . His riffs are the type of black metal I like but Varga are great too they really set a atmospheric tone
Buen video y excelentes riffs. Burzum mi banda favorita, saludos desde México !
Sadly, you didn't use some of Varg's best riffs. (My Journey to the Stars, Snu Mikrokosmos Tegn (the ending), Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament, Key to the Gate).
Beholding daughters of the firmament is so cold and dark it shouldn't be made

Suggestion:Bathory riffs!
I could never pick one over the other. They're both amazing in their own distinctive ways!

Yet another ingenious video on this channel. Thank you.
I love how Varg-centric this is.. given that he also played on most of the Mayhems songs and also contributed some riffs with Snorre to DMDS! Good work, man!!
Lots of people don't know Snorre ghostwrote a lot
@@tomchips8297 Didn't Necrobutcher write some of it too? And I wish Snorre would write more music, man has killer riffs.
I prefer V man riffs more because of the atmosphere they deliver
Euronymous was such an inovator, a legend. He basically created Modern Black Metal
yes but with a lot of help from varg
He copied most of the riffs from old-school Death Metal demos like Necrodeath's 86 one , and other riffs he simply got from Snørre
Varg's riffs are more technical and kinda sad too, while Euronymous's are pure evil
I mean it still has that classic black metal treble sound but I can hear the bass when you chug too. Listening to their old records is like listening to white noise. You really have talent in mixing
Great video. I forgot how good some of those Mayhem and Burzum riffs were.
Jon Nödtveidt vs. Infernus riff battle would be pretty epic...
Nodtveidt is tops when it comes to black metal to me.
What about Werwolf vs Shatraug
Great idea! I've seen similar videos for different genres, but this is the first I've seen for black metal. It would be awesome if you approached some other bands too. Keep up the good work! 🤘
I can't pick one. They both have some sick riffs. That lost wisdom riff is fuckin perfect.

I honestly like them both the same,
Euronymous - catchy Varg Vikernes - Deep
The comment I was searching for! +1
Vargs riffs are sadder and depressive. I would go with Euronymous on that one.
