I’ve never known anyone that ever lost “big” weight like I have. When I listen to you I feel a kindred spirit. I was exactly like you at my heaviest weight. I didn’t even believe photographs were accurate. I always felt I was smaller than that. I also never looked at anything in the mirror except my face for brushing my teeth & makeup. On the flip side, just like you, I didn’t believe people telling me I looked thinner. Even at -50 or -60. These people all knew I had lost this weight & I felt they were just being kind. I honestly couldn’t see it. I’m 6’0” tall so I know I have to lose more than average people to show a visual difference. I think I was at -80 before I truly felt I looked thinner. Even now at -98 I’m surprised when people I haven’t seen for ages seem so shocked at my appearance & so happy for me. It honestly brings tears to my eyes because the difference must actually be real! I’m so happy I found you. You explain how you feel about this journey in ways I can’t. Thank you.

When you love your body you are loving all the women who have come before you. Instead of saying I hate my legs because there not as long or toned as someone else's, I say I love my legs because they are strong and they look like my grandma's and she was awesome. Or if I'm feeling like I don't like my tummy and It looks like my mom's, I'll say to myself what would I say to my mom if she was complaining about it the way I am. Loving is an act of healing.

Brilliant video! I plan to combat change blindness by taking a photo weekly when I weigh myself. I am not too fussed about my current actual weight, it is on its way to reducing because I am taking steps, but I am subject to not seeing my body silhouette for what it really is. Ironically, I have tended to see myself as thinner than I really am so it can take an objective snapshot for me to take in the truth which might be why I have stayed heavier for longer than I needed to. But objective info is really important for taking off the blinders to change. I am excited to embrace change in the direction of getting fitter.

Since a very young age I thought I was fat. I remember as young as 7 years old hating taking pictures because I believed I was fat and ugly. I look back at those pictures now and a see a very normal not at all fat child standing next to her "tiny" younger sister. My sister was very petite. People would comment on how small she was which in turn made my child mind think that I must be huge! The comments made about my sister where never intentionally meant to make me feel negative about myself or to hurt me, but from early on I began to compare myself to everyone around me, always coming up deficient. This constant/daily negative inner voice sent me on a path of destructive body dysmorphia and shame my entire life
.I became what I told myself I was. Now, at 53 I yearn to find that inner normal sized girl, to be her, to console her, to tell her she is worthy of love and respect, and to be the person I was intended to be. 🎸❤️

I have fallen down the rabbit hole binging your videos! Every one speaks to me more and more! "Not today, Satan!" - I felt that when you talked about the negative thoughts and self talk that comes to sabotage our progress and motivation. Your videos showed me that the missing piece of my weight loss journey was the mental part. I knew the basics. Every diet is the same. Calorie deficit and some movement. But my mind was holding me back for a myriad of reasons that I am working through. Every day that I put in the work to correct the self-sabotaging thoughts that lead to destructive behavior makes it easier to follow the basic weight loss plan that works no matter how it's packaged. I have almost the same amount of weight to lose as you did to reach my GREAT physical self and I'm going for it 100%!
I too suffered from the body blindness and could not see how large I really was. I avoided mirrors, cameras and people as much as possible. I did not want any feedback of reality. I did this subconsciously, but now I realize that's what I was doing - avoiding the truth. When I face it I was horrified - not with how I looked but by how much I has abused myself and mistreated myself. The behavior horrified me because I would not allow anyone I loved to abuse themselves in that way.... yet I did it to myself. So that spoke volumes of the love I felt for myself and that had to change. Thank God is it changing and I am seeing the results in my physical body. Once I reach my goal of half my size I'll be back to let you know!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story with the world!!

I haven't started actually losing weight yet...this time, anyway. These tips are great! I feel thinner than I am, so when I see photos or video of myself it's like a punch in the gut. I was the tallest, skinniest kid all through grade school. The guys started catching up in middle school. I didn't start gaining weight until college. So it's a double shock to see myself this way when mentally I still feel like that gangly, awkward kid. Thank you for being so honest about your journey. You are a true inspiration for me, you give me hope that maybe I can actually get there too.

Yes! I went to my class reunion SO happy that I had lost 14 pounds…until we got the photos back! Oh! My! I thought I was so “thin”!! The photos showed me in need of 60 pounds more to go! I had no idea how fat I really was! Now that I am at goal weight, I don’t know what I look like! I have been this way now for almost 3 years but I still pick up the “teeny tiny shorts” and think they won’t fit-when I just took them out of the dryer! My own clothes! One wise thing we did (hubby also lost 60 lbs) was to buy interim clothing from the thrift store and other low-priced places! I went from a size XL (because I refused to buy anything that said 18 or 20 or 22!) down to a Medium or 8-10. I LOVE getting dressed now! (That was one of my goals when I started.) I am afraid that I LOOK at myself a LOT! I try to get people to take photos so I can SEE what I look like now. I never want to go back! But not knowing what you really look like is such a big part of this process!

Self sabotage for sure! Bad day? Have a snack or 2 or 3. It took a long time for my head to stop saying "I deserve this treat" to asking myself - what do you REALLY want? I have been overweight since my 30s and I am TIRED of it. I want to enjoy life while I can. -22 pounds so far and a long way to go (60 more pounds) but small goals and positive self talk will get me there. I don't want to go another year thinking maybe next year I will get healthy or get in shape or fit into cute clothes. 🎸🎸❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for this content. I’m in the process of making the decision to loose weight and I have begun to immerse myself in the mindset so that I will be all in. One of my fears is how to handle it when I reach goal. Last time I reached goal, I was nervous and never got comfortable with my new shape and living in the smaller body. Thank you for talking so candidly about this topic. This topic is much more important to maintenance than many realize. One must continue to work on themself in every area because the journey does not end with weight loss.

🎸 I just received some clothes that I've recently ordered and I really can see how my mind is not catching up to my weight loss, because the stuff I was afraid wouldn't fit fits ok and the stuff where I bought my usual size is too big. I still have a long way to go with my weight loss/fitness journey, but it's quite nice to see how far I've come.

🎸 I think an important thing to remember too is that even if that size 10 pair of jeans doesn’t fit, it doesn’t necessarily mean you haven’t made progress. As we all know, women’s clothing is stupid.
I was trying on pants the other day and I fit into a size 16 for the first time since probably high school. I was excited about it but even though they buttoned and zipped up they were still quite tight and uncomfortable and gave me a massive muffin top. They didn’t have an 18 in that style, but they did have an 18 in a similar one so I grabbed them and tried them on. They fit the exact same as the 16 in the other style so I had to get a size 20 in that one lol.
But I just told myself hey, I’ve taken my measurements and I KNOW I’ve made huge progress. And I didn’t let it deter me when even just a year ago, I probably would have spiralled from it. It was the least stressful time I’ve ever had trying on clothes so I had to give myself a huge pat on the back about it.
TLDR; the size of the pants/shirt/dress is not the be all end all

Wow thank you for this video. I have somewhat of an opposite problem where growing up I always felt so “big”. I felt like all the others girls in my class were skinnier than me (and they probably were just not as much as I thought.) I constantly thought if I lost weight I would be happier. Then I lost weight and I didn’t realize until my friend pointed it out. But I still didn’t feel small unless I took pictures/ videos I looked skinny in. Now that I’ve gained weight I actually look like what I used to think I looked like. When I look back I can’t believe how skinny I was without really realizing it! When I looked skinnier in a picture I just thought that I was good at posing. So now I also can’t trust myself. What if I’m not that big I’m just making it up in my head? What if I’m actually really big but I’m being delusional. I have so much more love for my body so it’s weird being my heaviest but also being happy with my body. It’s so weird looking in the mirror not knowing what you are. What also helped me is realizing fat is not a feeling. The feeling is fear (of being unattractive), insecurity, etc.
I will definitely use the tips in your video!

Your perceptive and compassionate approach to these issues is inspiring. I've been up and down in my weight for ever it seems but have never been satisfied with how I look. And when I did lose, I always gained it back again. Even today I am still shocked when I see myself in a photo because I see myself (internally) as smaller than I really am. From listening to you I understand there is a disconnect here, and I've never thought of it in this way. Your suggestions are incredibly helpful - to take a photo of myself once a week, and to change my style. To pull these old unconscious patterns into the light of day is hard work. Your channel is helping me to begin to understand them. Thanks so much for all you do!

Before and after pictures really can be inspirational to others and help them get going. It is difficult as for some it will be that they can see it can be achieved and spurs them on, for others they may feel its just not acheivable for them. So what do we do? I say share, its i.portant that tjose who have struggled can see it is possible, it is about finding your own route to health and starting the journey yourself, it will be about more than food. Sort the head and the food. My issue has been losing and gaining 4 stone repeatedly. Very few pictures. Currently slim but not feeling it going to work on that and booked for a tummy tuck later this year. Will still have the bingo wings but the flabby floppy scarred belly will be going.

Watching before and after's has been so powerful for me to convince myself that despite previous setbacks, this really and truly is possibly for me. I 100% agree! When I had lost a noticeable amount of weight in the past, I had a really hard time liking how I looked because it reminded me of a time I had lost a lot of weight from being sick. Even though there was literally a 40lb difference and that time I had lost weight in a good way, it was still scary to see myself “skinnier”. It’s been something I’m scared of dealing with again. 🎸 I relate to everything you said, well, except for the end result after losing weight. I'm still in the losing weight phase. Thank you for being so upfront and relatable. I've switched to a whole-foods plant-based diet (essentially vegan) and I"ve noticed great results in less than two months. I have lost some weight, but my blood work results are really showing improvement, even without exercise. Hopefully I can add exercise soon! (I have a foot injury that is preventing me at this time.)

I just found you in the past week and love listening to you! 🎸 I have lost and gained many pounds ever since I was a teenager but I took my most successful weight loss journey 10 years ago. Your vlogs help me remain healthy and fit as a 75 year old woman. Your success is amazing!! Your messages about how we feel and think about ourselves really make a huge difference as we choose how we eat and how we stay physically active. Many thanks for the inspiration ❤

I "found" you through your ALT style video as I'm trying to find my new style in the middle of my weight loss journey. I needed this video so much. I was in a total panic shopping the other day, holding up clothes having no idea what something that would fit my body would look like in stores where I hadn't been able to fit into their size ranges in years. I feel like I "should" just be happy to be losing weight. I'm so glad that you're discussing the mental/emotional challenges on your channel.

I have experienced body dysmorphia and it’s a demon I have to constantly keep in check. I’m covered in cellulite and need to lose 10kg, I’ve joined a gym and started weighing myself. 20 years ago I lost 4 stone on an air walker, air walkers are great cause there’s no pressure on your joints, but it has left me with excess skin, the works. We have to love ourselves, whatever our body is like. I give myself compliments daily and it really helps.🎸🖤❤️

🎸 Love the new background (but a few times someone was quietly talking in the background and it was distracting). SO helpful. I also avoided pics and thought I was thinner before I started, so I get it. Loved your tips and tricks which I will add to my daily life. And THANK YOU for addressing self sabotage! Bingo. As soon as I'd lost 20 lbs and was near a big WL goal for me, I freaked out and gained 3 1/2 lbs in one week. I figured out what was happening, have now lost that weight (and another pound), so back on track, but watching my behaviours. But thank you. And re: style - yep, was only buying clothes that fit and looked at least ok. I'm waiting to buy new clothes, but what I'm looking at and wanting to buy is totally different! Bit by bit... You rock Carla. 😎🎸

I 100% get this! I still feel at times I look 150lbs heavier. I'm still shocked when I see myself in clothes now...or pictures...my brain has been hard-wired to live with 20 years of obesity that I can't seem to fully accept the new me. It's very frustrating most days. I have people SHOCKED when they see they have seen me in some time, telling me how tiny I am and great I look and I just shrug it off with the mindset that I'm still fat/overweight...150lbs heavier...even though I can see the difference my brain doesn't want to accept my new reality...very frustrating.

@Carla these topics are so relevant and resonant and I really appreciate your sharing! Like you, I have had a long-standing tendency to think I don’t “look” as overweight as I’ve been (and for me that was also tied to a bias against superficial appearance preoccupation and for healthy living instead). In the course of my life, I would lose ten to twenty pounds and then-even though I felt basically the same-others would comment. I imagine the attention was well intended, but it was usually at that point that I’d get most derailed because I would end up feeling very self conscious.
Reconciling my tendency of change blindness, as well as my sensitivity to unsolicited feedback from others, is definitely part of what I’m working through and I’m happy to be at a place to now prioritize my focus on physical health and well-being over all the other ups and downs.
You are such an inspiration. As I intentionally exercise and also increase my daily activity and movement overall, I often think of your encouragement on your walking video. Thank you.
On the loose skin issue, I had lost 34 lbs last summer and suddenly panicked about the possibility of getting loose skin. This also came at a time that I got unsolicited feedback from someone I know well which seemed hurtful. So I stopped all that was working and now a year later (most of my weight loss maintained), I am back on track to get to my ideal weight (about 60 lbs to go). This has been a very solo journey for me and I’m grateful to find RUclipsrs like you sharing insights and support so I feel less alone and overwhelmed by it all. Thank you, again 🙏

Oh Sandy thank you for sharing so much! I totally understand the unsolicited feedback and comments on your appearance. It can also make us feel more exposed with less fat to act as a barrier. I wish you all the best with your journey cx

@@HalfofCarla exactly! For years I would call my body fat a “protective layer” because it did feel like a kind of emotional and literal insulation. Obviously that is not the best approach and as I realized what I I had been saying, I stopped saying it and look for other ways to be safe in the world.

🎸Thanks so much for posting this! I think I mentioned on your video before this one that change blindness is something I struggle with now, and these tips will probably help. Like you said it takes time! Great idea with the actual measurements instead of the number on the scale & photos alone. I still have a long way to go, a very long way to lose the amount of weight I need to. But I break it down into smaller goals so that each step on the path feels like a victory. I just need to convince my eyes and mind that things are going well. (: Thanks again.

🎸 Excellent descriptions. I totally understand "the opposite thinking I'm smaller than I am" sometimes but other times I'm looking at myself seeing the rounded face and i say I don't recognize myself but I do other times lol all over the place. I was talking about this funnily enough to my husband earlier, that when I get to my goal I am going to see it I don't think I'll have a problem seeing myself thin lol I'm just so ready for it. I also thought about creating a vision board on pinterest of what my new style will be once I get to my goal weight, and then THIS video popped up in my feed today lol!! Crazy!

Thank you so much for this video, Carla! It is incredibly helpful as I am on what's going to be my final weight loss journey (claiming this as fact!). I had what I believe to be Body Dysmorphia 21 years ago when I was in high school and lost 100 lbs fairly quickly. I have worries about that happening again, but when you mentioned change blindess, a term that's new to me, I for sure can relate to that now. This go around I have lost 98.4 in 8 months, and while all of my clothes are too big, I can technically get away with still wearing some of them, but feel so so frumpy because it all looks too long and makes me look bigger than I am. I have yet to try on new jeans because I am afraid the size I think I am now won't fit and I will get discouraged, BUT, the next time I am out I am going to make it a point to try on some new clothes to get my mind to catch up with how much smaller I am even though I don't always see it. So many great points you made in this video!

I dont know how to say this, but in my teenage years i was never heavy, like my bmi was around 19-20, but i had some bigger breasts for my age, + i had very chubby cheeks, when i looked in the mirror i always felt like i was super fat, this changed the way i look at my self and my eating habits, i always wore medium sized clothes (one to two sizes bigger that what i should wear), as the years passed i gained weight but my size didnt change, the way clothes looked on me changed but since i still wore the same size it didnt matter, i always avoided pictures, and when i look in the mirror i only look at my face, whenever someone takes a picture of me i think im ssuper heavy, now, I'm at my heaviest weight (bmi 30) and i just started wearing large sized clothes since my medium-sized dont fit anymore) when i look at pictures from my teenage years or early college i dont believe it, like i was this "thin"???? I always thought i was heavy, watchig your videos are helping me understand my self a little better and stoppig that cycle i was in for my entire life, appreciating my look and stopping those bad eating habits that i accumulated though out all of these years~~ 🥺🥺
