The majority of us "know" how to lose weight and we can apply weight loss tips until we're blue in the face, but if the motivation behind our actions is off, the results won't matter. In this video I'm sharing with you the difference that made the difference with my weight loss journey and how this attempt, as opposed to all the others led to lasting and sustainable weight loss.

I remember in one of your earlier videos, you said "be kind to yourself and come from a place of love." It completely changed the way I viewed weight loss. I stopped seeing the process as punitive, and started viewing it as an act of self-love, and it's made such a difference to my approach. Thank you for inspiring me to change my mindset!

I have been a champion of putting myself down my whole life. One day I was telling myself that I was weak because I put this weight on, and just wasn’t have any success getting it off. Then, I realized that I wouldn’t tell my friend she was weak. I would talk to her and remind her of everything she has accomplished, and reminded her that she was anything but weak. I sat there and told myself “you were in the Army and served in the Middle East during Desert Storm, you had a great career in law enforcement, you’re a mother of a brilliant daughter, and the grandmother of 3 beautiful kids. You survived cancer!!! So what, if I’m not losing weight as fast as I want? I’m sleeping better, my clothes fit better, and my energy level is great. The weight WILL come off.” If we talk to ourselves the way we speak to strangers, our emotional selves we would be so much better off. 💜💜💜

I honestly believe that without talking to yourself in a positive & inspiring way every single day, you have very little chance of large weight loss success. People always ask me about the 95 lbs I lost & how I did it. The simple answer is that I talk myself into it everyday. It wasn’t enough for other people to believe in me. I had to start believing in myself. Everything outside of that is just simple calorie math. 💜💜💜

the idea of "radical self compassion" sounds way more appliable to me than "radical self love". It's insane to me how our thoughts keep us stuck in unhealthy behaviours, and how we get used to them! Thank you for addressing this, Carla xx

I only found your videos yesterday, but it’s been an absolute refreshing wake up call. I lost a whole lot of weight 4 years ago but couldn’t for the life of me keep it off. Looking back now I’ve realised how I white-knuckled my way through it and my motivation was essentially self loathing and disgust with myself. I really need to stop the judgement and work on the self compassion. Thank you so much 💜💜💜

We always tell the boys at baseball practice not to watch the ball while running the bases bc it slows them down. Why did I never associate that with my own self??? I am always comparing - and failing - and talking very badly of myself. Thank you for these insights. I have much to ponder! 💜💜💜

💖💖💖thank you Carla for being my weekly inspiration and pep talk. Your videos have really helped me a lot. My biggest mental struggle is the voice in my head that keeps telling me “why do you think that this time you will be able to keep the weight off. You will just gain it back”. I've been beating myself up over spending money that could definitely been spent in a more productive way. I can't change it, so I have to let it go, get back on my path to move forward.

The Kindness Method, a book by Shahroo Izadi, has helped me change my negative inner monologue. Her approach is similar to yours, Carla. The author helrself has lost half her bodyweight, and has worked as an addiction specialist for the NHS before writing the book. I recommend it to anyone trying to change their habits and inner monologue ❤

Re questions, I wondered how you remind yourself to practise self compassion when you're not in a great place mentally, and ironically need the self compassion even more, but it's always harder then!! Well, at least for me it is. I know you physically bat away negative thoughts and ground yourself. Does it always need to be a physical reconnect in that scenario to take yourself out of your own negative head do you think?

I stepped on the scale this morning to find that I'm the weight I was when I got sick 5 years ago. Well, actually, 5 years ago was the first time I went into the hospital. I was "sick" well before then, I just didn't know it. It's been a rough road with another week-long hospitalization and several surgeries- minor and major, many medications and almost monthly bloodwork with a massive weight gain. Last August I started on a WFPB journey and since then, I have been able to stop taking several medications, my bloodwork results have greatly improved, the brain fog has disappeared and I'm halfway to my weightless goal. This has been without any exercise. I finally felt well enough to start the gym last week and I'm going slow because I have little muscle and strength left, but I'm starting. This whole time the biggest factor, besides eating WFPB has been changing how I talk to myself. I literally praise my body, telling her she's doing great and thank her for keeping me alive even when I wasn't giving her the nourishment to sustain health. Yes, it's "woo-woo" but we all need to talk kindly to ourselves. Your channel has really helped me with the mental health aspect of my journey. I even started therapy which has helped me deal with some issues I've been suppressing. Thank you so much for showing up for yourself and sharing the "how-to" with us! 🖤👑

Hi Carla 👋🏻 just wanted to ask what came first - was the first step the consistency with food prep and walking, and then self compassion came as a second step (as it is consoderbaly more difficult)?

I’d love to know the author and name of the book you mentioned at 12:00 minutes in.
Thank you for these videos! It’s stirring up a lot of emotion for me but it’s because i have that dialog too.
Everyday I pray for that “moment” when it all makes sense and I learn to treat myself with dignity and kindness.

Hi Carla- I love your channel so much! You have such wonderful advice and insights. Beyond the weight loss but about self care. I eat and exercise differently than you do but I get a lot out of what you share. The mindset is critical in having a positive experience during our weight loss journey 🖤🖤🖤

I haven’t seen a video of you talk about how you lost your weight. Was it a specific diet?

So when you used to be judgemental and punish yourself, doing hard workouts, did you get any results? or did you become overwhelmed by the punishing regime and give up?
This latest diet I'm on I started by eating 3 proper portioned meals, salad, whole foods, veg, around 1500 calories but maybe really was 1700 calories, no exercise, maybe a light walk round the table at home and some light weight lifting. I did some walk at home exercises sometimes, but not regular. I stopped eating cake and chocolate. I thought that would be enough effort to slowly lose weight. At first I was , then no results, so I started a little fasting in the morning to push on. In the end that seems to be the only way I lose any weight. I can't sustain that over a year, but if I eat 3 meals, I put on weight. So I get annoyed with the way my body works and frustrated. I'm eating well proportioned food, not pushing myself with exercise. Other people that would be enough.
I don't hate myself as a person, I'm just frustrated. I agree with you about not depriving myself, but I get triggered by food, there's no off switch. I'm happy with what I'm eating, I don't miss the cake. It's junk anyway.
    Love your message. Thanks

You should exercise regularly if you’re serious about weight loss. It will take ages if you don’t. The fact you aren’t losing weight isn’t a unique issue with your particular body, that’s just an excuse. Anyone that is very sedentary will struggle to lose any weight. Try walking, if you can, or chair exercises if you can’t.

@@jillianrussell3321 I have a physical job which I do 5hrs a day 2 to 3 times a week and as I said I do light walking and weights for exercise. I didn't want to go through my whole diet and exercise history, but in the past I've done a lot of exercise, same problem. I was thinking about all the times in the past I got my weight down and it was always because I was not eating, I wasn't exercising, just not eating. I don't agree with you that hard exercise is the answer. The Zoe institute say hard exercise just makes you hungrier and the body will urge you to put it back. I've experienced that, so I agree, more exercise will cause me to feel hungrier and I'll be fighting that as well.
I've done regular 2 to 3 hour walks, I even started running for 2 hours every day. It doesn't make any difference, I still come to a grinding halt.
