Disclaimer: I DO NOT ADVOCATE PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION. I can not be held responsible for your actions. Perform this mod at your own risk. It is recommended that you use brighter lights when tinting lenses (LEDs) to ensure they are still clearly visible. This was done on a car that is not driven. However, with the stock lights it was still clearly visible at the state required 1,000 feet per regulations at night for driving tail lights, as well as 300 feet in plain sunlight during the day for braking lights. They also retained their reflective qualities due to using one single thin coat of black. These lights ARE legal in the state of Idaho, and in most states. Авто/Мото
It also protects your lights from the elements. You'll always maintain that new high gloss showroom finish once you're done with the black look. This stuff is incredible.
Peeling off edges of plastidip has to be one of life's most satisfying experiences.
Thanks for showing the night comparison... First in several videos
i just dipped my grills on my bmw with matte black, looks clean. after watching this i will definitely apply plasti dip to my tail lights. nice tutorial man
Nice video straight to the point !!! No need to show every coat and all that.. perfect the way you did it and nice review after all was completed day and night didn't see that in any of the other video's.. thanks again !
Best video I've seen so far for the tailgate lights. for the simple fact that its not too dark and not too light! Perfect video man thanks !!
skillz dj Your kind words are much appreciated!
Shameless plug here, you otta subscribe for more plastidip stuff ;)
awesome tutorial. Thank you for showing how it can be applied in a reasonable fashion! I'm excited to try this.
+kthingwold Of course! I'm glad people are getting good vibes from this video!
Thnks dude! Have a spare plasi dip can and have been thinking about getting my tail lights darker with out spending much!!!! Cnt wait to try it
Quality, well laid tutorial. Thanks dude.
I caught a glimpse of “Boise Weekly” logo on your masking paper and had to pause it. Then I read your description & see you’re in Idaho. 🙂 hello, fellow Idahoan! 🥔 ⛰ 🚲✌🏻
Just did this to my 2010 Silverado. Didn't come out as glossy and I planned but I'm really loving the look. Thanks for the upload!
TheBiddlerontheroof No problem! Glossifier can be a bit tricky to get used to, but it looks awesome once you get it!
How to "properly" plastidip.... does it improperly in the wind
U caught that too?!
No one cares
Plastidip overspray literally rubs off.
He means how to do it properly with gansta style....get it right
Great job my man you really took your time with it and it came out great.
this was a great video and very informative. getting my tail lights smoked out today! thanks :)
I did it like you said on my GMC Sierra. Came out great. Thanks man. Good video.
+NoahCanHelp Right on man! Glad it helped!
I think you did a excellent job. I've seen people do all black, too dark!
doctor octo? is that you?
great video - thanks!
That's actually smart dude because not only will the cops cite them if it's not within regs but your shop can also be held liable if they really wanted to put the screws to yah it happens here with window tint shops will only hang the tint within regs if u ask them to like double hang limo tint no warranty no receipt no paper trail to them because they could also be fined as well
Thanks for the good video.
Yo gangsta ur hella kewl!
Cool idea!
Glad I saw ur vid. I bought smoke, but definitely gonna return it for black, thanks
How long does ur plastidip last with regular car washes? I did both the tail/headlights ur way, turned out pretty good
Is there a certain kind of gloss that I have to use or will anything work? I've never done this before but I have an all black pontiac GXP that would look great with some smoked taillights
Great job
I see you follow the 8in rule wen it comes to spray cans my good sir
If I take the taillights out of my car, do I still need to use the tape? Also should I use sand paper?
Okay when smoke first came out I used it excessively trying it out and I used one of my head lights to kinda experiment with to see how it would turn out and it was a pain I could never seem to get an even level of tint all over the whole light it was always to light here or to dark there so j kinda gave up on smoke and tried out the lens tint and that worked out way better on my lights
Thats sweet! Way better than the dam tint film
Do you have to sandpaper the lights before?
+Jsmakal61 Use plastidip glossifier. Also, use matte clear. Do one layer of black, 3-4 matte clear, then one of glossifier for a similar result
Your a genius
I never used "Pre-dip spray" I just use rubbing alcohol after I removed my tint and it worked well. Cops pulled me over because I hella over did the tint and I had to re-do them.
How many cans of glossifier did you use?
Nice bro your a 49ers fan
Night Shades, or mix 3 parts gloss clear coat , one part black paint.
GOD DAMN WIND!!
Nice video, only thing is that I think the sprays around the light are kind of heavy
thanks Branden
Could you tell me the steps?
Good tutorial going to do my G37 tailights
XTC Right on! Good luck!
Steezy af
So I gotta ask, did you actually spray some on to the body of the car and peel it off along with the tape? I actually just swapped out my front headlights for darker ones and I want to do tail lights next. I would do this, but just wanted to know how you took it off the vehicle when u peeled it, did u use a razor knife and cut it first?
No razor is needed. It's plastidip. AS long as your spray it as heavy as you do on the light it will peel up at the seam.
Hahaha I like that you tested it, in the night
I'm glad you liked that
Thanks getting tomorrow
Nice
Would 2 or 3 coats be too dark? My tail lights are LED and my headlights are halos
Mike W You might be okay with LED tail lights. I'll be uploading a video here fairly soon. We dipped all the chrome trim on my buddy's truck, as well as the taillights. He wanted two coats, and they are definitely not legal with the stock lights.
Would I be able to use the same method for tinting headlight covers, and the windows?
+Dylan Morphis Headlights would work, but I'd recommend using matte clear before the glossifier, and lots of it, because rock chips may be an issue. I wouldn't recommend doing windows with plastidip.
+Braden Carlson Okay thanks
Windows lmfao... Just get them tinted... If you look around you can literally get 4 windows tinted for like $180
I've got matte carbon black and clear coat gloss "custom wrap" removable coating ... will this work? or do I need a diff kind of black for tinting
that won't work
+Slow Balt yeah man I got the clear coat black it came out well still there after three months
Nice video bro this just saved me some money! Lol
If I decide to peel off the light, will it still be easy since you used only one coat of black?
bigleaper2 Yes, as long as you have adequate coats of glossifier. I did four, and I actually peeled it off this light about a week after this video was made :)
So I just did this to my car.. I'm kind of worried that I might get pulled over for em.. do you think that shade of tint isn't too dark?
Paul Romero run down to your local auto store and get the brightest replacement bulbs they sell. If you can run xenon bulbs in the back, do it.
hi, I did mines... but how do you clean them?
+jpaulmon After they have cured for 4 days, it is safe to spray it with a hose, pressure washer, and use many chemicals. Check out my video testing the durability of plastidip on this channel. We put it through a lot and it was fine!
Can u peel of the it off after u put the glossifier on it
Jon Gruben yeah man glossifier is also dip
Is this legal in cali? Or how does it come off if i wanted to take it off?
Just peel it off it's plastidip lol
how long was the process?
hawk keys You can do it from start to finish in just a couple hours.
tbh I think tinting them like this just a bit, helps people see you brake better , especially when its sunny out. just my two cents lol
where can u buy thar stuff at
Advanced auto parts, Home Depot
i guess the wind was more gangster 🤣😂
To all the people going to do this. Use VHT Nightshades because it is actually made for this and it is a translucent black, where light can shine through while allowing it to get darker.
Nfspeed000 I swear you people are commenting before you watch the video. When you use one coat of black plastidip as I did in the video, it too is translucent. I've seen plenty of nightshaded tail lights that you can't see the light through too well. You can make it darker here by making the black coat slightly heavier before adding gloss coats. And, as I'd recommend when tinting tail lights in any manner, put brighter bulbs in the housings...
The difference? If you get pulled over and removing it is the difference between getting a ticket or not, your nightshades will fail you. If you want to see how it will look before you go all in, this costs like $7 to do.
Your not too bright. Plasti dip IS NOT PERMANENT! !! night shade is! Therfore one can remove it if need be, say it's a lease, or perhaps you get pulled over.... you can peel off on the spot to avoid further hassle with the long arm of the law. I don't understand your logic behind the night shade. Personally I think the stuff sucks.
Thanks for changing my mind. I had thought that Smoke wouldn't be anywhere near my expectation... also I have several cans of black just sitting around so what the heck. Previous owner of my (2g Eclipse) project car was Hispanic so naturally he _had_ to stick on chrome Altezza tail lights. Bleaugh! Tinting that sucker!
The world may never know, all the same with African-Americans. In a neighboring county from me there are Chrome 20s/30s on everything including vans. Chrome looks okay on hot rod restorations, not so much on anything else.
is that the plastidip that yoir ripping off with the tape?
yeah!! you can peel off plastidip but iirc videos make it look really easy
would this be legal in WI? and how about headlights?
You literally could have just typed that in Google lmao
it's legal everywhere as long as you can still see the lights through the tint
good Job, because that smoke smoke spray sucks mane.
about to black out these taillights yessssss
yo why do you turn the can upside down and let aerosol out
Clears any paint left in the tip
+Da KushMan +Sir Swaglord Hit the nail on the head. It clears the nozzle and prevents any blockage during the next use. Drying in the nozzle and causing bad spray patterns is VERY common with the stock PD nozzle.
could you throw some smoke on top of the black plastidip?
adnan muhammad You could, but there's no reason to
sorry but why let it in hot water before usin'...?thanks
Proverbs 11 Let's it flow better.
thanks my brother, i just bought fluorescent blue and really appreciate your tips!!im subscribing right now
Braden how does this compare to liquid tint?
+gokartish performance wise, it's comparable. The biggest selling point, of course, is that it's removable.
dude your awesome
I blackened out my tail lights to they work less.
glossifier is very sensetive to scraps... I preffered smoke cause of it.
Алексей Щукин and scratches
I wonder what this technique would look like on a clear headlight with one coat of white or chamelion plasti dip.
Robert Faz did you do it
Robert Faz looks like a 5 year old took a crayon and went to town on ur car
With all that wind, I can't even imagine the over spray that got everywhere.....
Comes off with a pressure washer pretty Easlily
@@DylanGarciaaa along with ur paint lol
can you use the same steps for headlights?
Texas 014 You can, just be careful. Places around here do not take to tinted headlights. It's almost an instant ticket around here.
in my town the cops are cool i have dark window then and they dont even bother with it & ill see how it goes now immwaiting on the second spray can i ordered it online
Right on! Just make sure to stick with one coat of black. A buddy of mine wanted me to do his F150. We did two coats and it was beyond illegal.
so one coat on headlights and tailights so they can be the same darkness with how many coat of gloss?
I do 5-6 coats of gloss lately, but if you can get matte clear, do a few coats of that first, then a couple coats of gloss. Matte clear is thicker like regular PD, so it won't require as many coats
Once i put 2 heavy coats on my 2014 Mustang and it looks sick
WeKnowTheTruth2012 Just have to be careful and make sure your lights are still within laws. I know a lot of cops don't care too much, but there's always a couple out there who just want to ruin your day.
+Braden Carlson Yes I be very been pulled over twice after smoking my lights and no cops mentioned anything but yesterday a cop pulled me over and said I have to remove it
Did you plasti dip your license plate light?
We’re gangstas
ima sparay my headlights. wish me luck
I used VHT
Yo I have a black car and I've tried this technique 3 times and it doesn't come out shiny and it grey next to the black of my car. Idk what to do at this point
YoungJayL1VE dis you uses glossifier
I've even stopped at the local dip installer here in town and even asked the owner even he said he didn't really like it and it was kind of a pain in the ass
ccapehart1980 I own a small company for installing plastidip. I won't do people's tail lights. That's partially the reason I made this video. I don't want them to be mad at me when an angry cop pulls them over and gives them a ticket/makes them take it off
Matthew Chamakese Shop had a customer car in it. That customer asked me to do his lights, and I woudln't, so I made this video to show him how it can be done.
🤙🏾🤙🏾
Don't get wrong it's a cool dip product it has many uses but I this case I had much better results with rusty lens tint and yes I defiantly agree PD is way easier to remove but lens tint is a he'll of a lot easier to remove then VHT nightshade that shit practically fossilizes when it drys
Why not take the tail lights out to do all this?
Jameson Fults Because that'd just be adding an unnecessary and time consuming step :)
👌
go niners!!!
shit I did what he did I just got pulled over 20 mins ago guess peel it up and try again
full of shit
if you got pulled over why would try it again?
MegaVideoEditor make it a lighter coat...duh.
would have been so much easier just to take light out no taping
my car requires a weird sized deep socket tool that i can't seem to find anywhere except online. i have everything to do it without taking the light out lol some cars are easy tho
+MegaVideoEditor lol I got a 99 expo only has two bolt at the top holding the taillight in after there out you just pull on the light it comes out
+skulledmonte84 yeah my mother's impala is similar. you only need a flathead screwdriver to take the light out. the fusion is different though
i rest my case i see overspray all over
I can't believe why anyone would plasti dip lights instead of using VHT nightshade?
Jack Spratt And applied with a lot less prep time, yes.
Jack Spratt You edited your comment and made it a statement, lol.
Benefits:
1)Cheaper
2)Faster (as no dissasembly is required)
3)Better effect if done properly
4) Easily removed to please an angry traffic cop.
I can't believe anyone would use nightshade, as it's permanent.
Braden Carlson
Can for Can It's NOT cheaper in Canada... a can of Plasti Dip here is over $20 and a can of nightshade is like $12 or something. With that said though Nightshade ONLY does one thing whereas plasti dip can be used on almost anything so its worth the extra money... and car guys really should have high grit sandpaper and polish around anyway and clearcoat costs about $10 or so....
I don't believe its a better effect... thats my personal opinion I guess.
I think you can break down the clearcoat and nightshade with some kind of solvent im pretty sure... not road side but you can.
I prefer the factory shine of nightshade to matte finish of plasti dip... if you clearcoat plastidip it does not come off easy Im told..
Jack Spratt As you can see in this video, the plastidip glossifier did add a quite nice gloss effect to it. I suppose it'd be hard to get in Canada, but if a truly high gloss effect is desired, the new high gloss topcoat would work nicely.
My point was that for people that want their lights tinted, but don't necessarily want it permanent, or don't want to take the time to sand it between coats. Plastidip is the option!
I make a lot of stuff out of carbon fiber. I have enough fun making that high gloss, I don't want to do that on taillights ;)
Braden Carlson I forgot about the gloss plasti coat
or take the lense off
Brighton Collver The idea here is kinda to keep it simple and do it with very minimal effort. I think I succeeded.
as long as you don't complain when I rear end you :P
Sum Body Your insurance would still have to pick it up, as my lights are within the legal limits :)
i don't have insurance... besides, insurance is overrated anyway. :P
Then when I prove my lights are legal, I'll sue you ;)
i'll quickly spray an extra coat or two of plasti dip now that you showed me how it's done >_< :P, good vid though
So this is not PLASTIDIP SMOKE? Sorry i don't understand it good in video :)
Nope, just regular black plastidip and glossifier. The smoke stuff is cool, but it's a bit more expensive and nobody around here stocks it.
Old Brick nose Ford to the rescue.
You got some shit on the back window of your Expi btw might want to take care of that
The sticker in memory of my dead grandfather? Yeah I'll take that right off.
Braden Carlson no bro haha
That 49ers bs
Unless your grandpa played for the whiners or some shit
Josh Christiansen He was from San Francisco and was a big fan of them, so yes, that graphic is part of his memorial sticker. I knew what you were talking about.
Braden Carlson wow way to turn a sports rivalry thing into some sentimental pity party for you
Thanks for the video on the smoked tail lights
Josh Christiansen Haha, dude...there's no way you could have known. I'm just fucking with you.
Should've kept it matte black. Looks tacky w/the glossifier...
You're way too close, buddy... plus wind... not a good equation..
That's...unfortunate to...hear
Take off the tape while the Plasti Dip is still wet to avoid peeling. That's how you get a nice sharp edge
look glassy boy there is not proper or improper way if you plasti dip the headlamps or tailight it will looks foggy or orange skin means it will looks old and shitty looking dont waist your money buying plasti dip for that for everything else is good bit mot for that
Well mate u just completely show me how not to do it thanks 🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Guy, just figured I would let you know I knocked an Excursion into a ditch today when I could not see the brake lights until it was too late. ABS functioned well on my F350 and I was able to just catch the right two feet of the Excursion. He spun and when the heavy ass end got three or four feet off the road.. off in the ditch he went.
Now, up until today I have been a big fan of the tinted lights. They look cool and I have been thinking about smoking the lenses on our family Tacoma. In the past I have seen them in full sun or at night and never had a real complaint except the retards who make them 'unsafe.' In full sun the brake lights stand out and at night I see enough of a difference to have never had an issue, but today it was raining and mid day. I could not tell it was brake lights and not running lights until I realized how fast the truck and I were closing the gap. Like I said I love the look, and before today would have tinted my own. My opinion has changed, WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING TO HINDER OTHER DRIVERS ABILITY TO SEE YOUR CAR?!?!?!
Sorry Bro but if you do this to a vehicle that you would allow you family to travel in you are piece of garbage. Willfully endangering others to look cool in pretty ignorant and sorry. My Ranch Hand took the shot pretty well and I was able to get home. The cop wrote the Excursion's driver a ticket and impounded the thing after they got it out of the ditch. The moral of the story don't tint your taillights kids.
+joshuawgarner Like I said in the disclaimer in the description: I am not advocating doing this. My own cars do not have tinted tail lights. I said "old family work horse" and the key word there was "old". This thing has a thrown rod and does nothing but sits now. I'm not about to do it to the current family vehicle, nor any of my own. I just wanted to show how I do it (and though I used to plastidip people's cars, trim, wheels, etc., I would NEVER do taillights, no matter how many times customers asked...even had a couple ask me to do their headlights). I agree, it's not a great idea, and if you decide to do it, it's at your own risk and peril. Even when it comes down to being reear-ended. In most cases, the police will not be friendly to you with any sort of dimming modification. That's just a fact.
+Braden Carlson Cheers!
go somewhere
+Braden Carlson "it's at your own risk and peril" - Well, not really. It's a risk for the drivers around you, and it is disappointing that the police do not bother people who do this to their cars as much as they should.
There are many good reasons NOT to tint your tail lights, and only one good reason. I drive 250+ miles per day and see tinted taillights on a daily basis. People, don't tint your taillights, they are actually there for a reason, you are making driving more dangerous than it has to be. 95% of people have very little idea of how to actually drive, so why make everything more complex by taking away your communication with other drivers?
I know you don't do that to your car, which is good - but people must understand when they are driving it is not all about them.
joey888joey8 I drive twice as much as you and as long as they are visible in the day there is no issue. It's cry asses like you is the reason no one can have any fun these days....go fck urself
and dont tint yer head tail lights on the vehicle take the friggen things off
first off if you wanna smoke out yer tail lights dont use plasti dip smoke or matt black
use rustoleum lens tint
+ccapehart1980 First off, don't comment on my videos unless you're coherent enough to use proper grammar.
And don't tell me what I'm doing wrong when you know absolutely nothing about the product. It's clearly glossed, not Matte.
I rest my case, there's no over spray, if there was it comes off...
