I had a can of VHT ready to do my truck taillights. Never even dawned on me to wet sand or clear coat. 8:00 I had 2000grit at home. They turned out fantastic. Thank u for this video!
Yeah never occurred to me either. I did this on my chevy only cleaned them with alcohol did 4 coats to get a dark smoke look and 2 layers of clear coat looked absolutely amazing. Honestly as long as you know how to use spray paint it'll be fine without sanding
I’m not sure if this would be considered a tint or not, I believe just is just a clear spray paint with a darker pigment. But you can also control how dark or light your lights will come out with with how many coats you put on.
Yes one coat will be fine if you don’t want it to dark. But I don’t think you would see it as much! As for clear coat, I would recommend any type of automotive clear coat, especially something with UV protection so it does not yellow!
Typically you would want to wait about 24 hours. But depends on temperature and humidity. I would just make sure it’s not tacky to the touch, and you should be fine to start wet sanding.
So after you apply your vht let’s say two coats each within 10-15 min from each coat what is wait time to sand ? And finally when to sand after applying 2-3 clear coats? Asking and will do testing want to offer this my business and will ofcourse do ima practice twilights but would like to know your ultimate thoughts would like ti get it done within that same dat turnaround ?
I would say I would wait about an hour, for the VHT coats to wet sand. But To be honest, you might not need to do it depending how well the VHT went down. I sanded it because it seemed pretty rough and had some imperfections. And for the clear coat I would at least a minimum of 6-12 hours. Depending on how cold and humid the weather is. But if you can wait even longer that would be better. Same day turn around might be pushing it, unless you really start early, and can finish kind of late.
Understood and what I figured maybe would have to offer to come back and finish them up after the clear coat or them just leave lights with me thanks man 🙏🏼 Do you think people Still Would want this kind of service now a days over actual tint!?
@@THATLTRFOUR50 yeah either if you can keep the lights for over a day would probably better. I still like to tint my taillights, also this way works much better on very complex shaped tail lights. Where your typical tint won’t stretch on certain angles. I would say many people like the tinted look, they just don’t won’t to pay for the expensive price for after market tail lights. So if you could offer at a decent price. Where it’s still much cheaper then nice after market lights, but still offers a nice tint for less then half of a new set of tail lights.
1 coat will be very light, maybe 2 coats you will be able to see the difference from the OEM color. But I would recommend any automotive clear coat with UV protection.
Depending on how many layers you put, if you only do a couple, it won’t effect it much, but if you put multiple layers it can start to block the light!
I’m just running a cheap set as well. And they do the same thing. There is no fix for this issue. Other then some people make decoders for these lights and all it does it make them run at full brightness all the time!
Should last a pretty long time! I had mine for about 2 years and they drilled looked like new! Only reason I don’t have it anymore is because I upgraded my tail lights!
If I finish following the steps, and I decide I want the tail lights to be darker after i polish them, can I just west sand them and go over it with another layer of VHT and clear coat? Or do I need to remove all of it?
If you polish it up, and decide you want it darker. I would atleast give them a quick sand with scotch brite to rough up the surface a little so the paint sticks better. But you should be able to tell when your applying the VHT, if it’s dark enough or not, and then just add an additional coat before the clear coat.
Yeah people do that, you just have to be more careful when you do that, because this doesn’t come off your paint. So just got to tape off and mask off really good!
Preferably an automotive clear coat. Either 2K clear, or some type of clear gloss for the cars paint or wheels. Because this clear coat has other protections usually including UV, so it won’t turn yellow.
I don’t know if it’s the headlight tint or the laquer spray but after I let the tint spray dry and apply laquer it removes the tint lol wtf I’m gonna have to remove it all again tomorrow and redo without the laquer
I am not sure I understand your question. If you are asking if you need to disconnect the lights from the car, you do not need too. But it makes it easier so you don’t get any over spray on the car.
I am unfamiliar with UK laws. I know in the US, it’s not specifically illegal, but if some rear ends you, and you have modified lights, it would be your fault!

That’s awesome! I’m glad the video gave you the idea for sanding and clear coating!
I was gonna be lazy glad I found this

Best vht tint outcome I have seen. Nice work.
Thank you!
All your mods are on point man. I have the same corolla and every video your release is like a teaser for me
Glad to know you like the videos. Thanks 🙏
I feel you bro, I got the s model so I’m a couple of features ahead of his car but every mod he comes out with I feel like I need to do to mine too 😅
best application and outcome i've seen!
Thank you!! Really appreciate it!
Recommend wrap, smoother and stays looking smooth over time.
I agree! But much harder to work with!
I like this one, a lot of people go for the straight up pitch black I'm not looking to do pitch black and I was wondering if a light tint was possible
Thank you! I agree, so many other people go straight black out, and I wanted something in between!
love the vids man keep it up
Thank you 🙏
Love the end product 👏🏻
Thanks 👍
So you did the vht, wet sanded with 2000, two coats of clear coat, one more wet sand and then hand polished?
Yes that is correct! You could probably omit the first wet sand if you are in a time crunch.
Thanks for the video very helpful
Thank you! I hope the video helped!
Does this count as tinting in terms of legality in Cali? or would tinting refer specifically to something vinyl/polyester wrapped?
I’m not sure if this would be considered a tint or not, I believe just is just a clear spray paint with a darker pigment. But you can also control how dark or light your lights will come out with with how many coats you put on.
Hello is it fine to do with just one coat if you do not want it too dark? Also what clear coat do you reccomend
Yes one coat will be fine if you don’t want it to dark. But I don’t think you would see it as much!
As for clear coat, I would recommend any type of automotive clear coat, especially something with UV protection so it does not yellow!
How long did you wait for the VHT to dry before wet sanding? Thanks!
I believe I let the VHT dry for about an hour before wet sanding it, and the clear coat I let sit over night before wet sanding and polishing.
how do you polish and buff after wet sand
I just take some Meguiars polish for plastic, and a microfiber pad, and I just polish it by hand, because I don’t have a polisher!
How long was the wait time in between coats for the vht and clear coat?
I probably waited about 30 minutes between the VHT and the clear coat.
I got a run on my first layer of clear coat. How long do I need to wait before sanding it?
Typically you would want to wait about 24 hours. But depends on temperature and humidity. I would just make sure it’s not tacky to the touch, and you should be fine to start wet sanding.
Hello and thank you for the video. Its been about 2 years since you made the video, do you still have the car and are you seeing any discoloration?
I had them off my car for about 6 months, but ended up putting these back onto my new corolla, and they still look brand new!
So after you apply your vht let’s say two coats each within 10-15 min from each coat what is wait time to sand ? And finally when to sand after applying 2-3 clear coats?

Hi there, which scotch brite did you use at the beginning there?
I believe I was using Brown scotch brite, which is not too aggressive, but enough to scuff the surfaces!

A question, does it reduce the light source
Depending on how many layers you put, if you only do a couple, it won’t effect it much, but if you put multiple layers it can start to block the light!
Greetings, I have the same car but I can't use a led in 9005 because they fliclkering a lot, what led 9005 do you use?
I’m just running a cheap set as well. And they do the same thing. There is no fix for this issue. Other then some people make decoders for these lights and all it does it make them run at full brightness all the time!
@@BrandonStellmach The same, I don’t want to use it at full all the time :(
How long will it last with clear coat like you did it?
Should last a pretty long time! I had mine for about 2 years and they drilled looked like new!

Thanks bro, did you end up sanding the clear coat?
If I finish following the steps, and I decide I want the tail lights to be darker after i polish them, can I just west sand them and go over it with another layer of VHT and clear coat? Or do I need to remove all of it?

What did you use to "polish" it at the end after clear coating and wet sanding?
I just used a meguiars paint polish. Don’t remember the exact one.
@@BrandonStellmach so polishing it didn't give it any haze look or yellowing? And rub in by hand or did you use a power polisher?
@@chacebusness6451 I just did it by hand using a micro fiber polish pad! And as for haze or yellowing I did not notice any of that.
Can you remove it back to normal if you clear coat them?
It would not be easy to remove, you would need to sand and re clear coat it.
Could I do this if I cover all around the light without having to take it completely off?
Yeah people do that, you just have to be more careful when you do that, because this doesn’t come off your paint. So just got to tape off and mask off really good!
Thank you!
No problem! I hope the video helped!
What kind of cutting compound?
I was just using meguiars ultimate compound.
Does it matter what type of clear coat used?
Preferably an automotive clear coat. Either 2K clear, or some type of clear gloss for the cars paint or wheels. Because this clear coat has other protections usually including UV, so it won’t turn yellow.

I know humidity can cause problems with the clear coat. Never heard it remove it.
Do you have to discount the lights
I am not sure I understand your question.
If you are asking if you need to disconnect the lights from the car, you do not need too. But it makes it easier so you don’t get any over spray on the car.
@ disconnect sorry autocorrect
What did you use to polish?
I just used a meguiars ultimate compound to polish them.
Did u sand after u sprayed ?
Yes I did a quick sand after the VHT, and then I did a finally wet sand and polish after the clear coat!
Do you have to take the lights off I know nothing about cars
You can keep the lights on the car, you just have to mask off the car so you don’t get any over spray!
How does it hold up?
They have been holding up great!
great info, btw please lower the BG music volume next time please!
Thank you! Will keep that in mine for my new videos!
