THANK YOU! I can’t afford a cutter( wool cutting machine). I found out about YARN HOOKING…YES!! I truly am thrilled at finding your video!! You are easy to follow and understand! OM Gosh, you and your site are heaven sent! Ok, I have to go to my yarn..😀
Hi, I just watched yours fabulous video because, lucky for me, yesterday I bought some vintage pre-cut wool, in those paper tubes and there was a well-loved hook (1.49!) included. Soooo as I have been alone in Seattle since the lockdown (my job dissolved with the event party company), I have been surfing through a myriad of crafts - it would probably get me sent to Vienna for serious observation if anyone knew all of the new crafting powers I have obtained. It has saved me, literally. And most importantly, today I found you. And your lovely, sometimes sweaty, way of teaching has not only helped me try this new craft with excitement but you and your humanity, knowledge, cheerfulness, smarts and wit has helped me feel better about my life. More hopeful. THANK YOU 🙏 Christina
I'm so glad, Christina. It's the same for me. Doing this and making patterns and being here to do shows and fill orders this past year has been a saving grace. I also have had so many times of needing to connect and hear the right thing at the right time to renew my hope and energy. I'm glad I could help out and be some kind of positive push xx
I got a real kick out of your refreshing honesty...thank you from someone who's trying to decide whether I could try hooking. You make it so clear & understandable!😃👍
Your video is great. Thank you for making it…I can’t afford a cutter machine, so finding out that wool yarn can do as well…is truly a blessing. Thanks.
This has been so helpful. I just started needle punch and now i'm obsessed. I also just realized that the wool I got for a new project is probably more suited for hooking, rather than punch! I've been wrestling with it. Thanks for taking the time to explain this all.
I’m so glad I came across your channel. I’m watching some vids on rug hooking because I am interested in learning. I crochet and I’m still fairly new at that, a year maybe. I’m also in New England. I’m keeping my mind stimulated with my hobbies. Stay safe and healthy.
It sorry i'm just seeing this message! Have you joined our group page on fbook... Rug Hooking, Rug Braiding, Punch Needle Club of Southern New England... so many beginners from the are and so many meet ups as soon as life is normal again. I crochet too and really took too hooking. You can use your yarn for both so you can keep buying nice yarns! Stay in touch and let me know if I can help you get going!
Ive want to learn how to hook rugs but didnt want to spend a fortune. Now the yarn is the way im going I have maybe 12 totes full and I cant knit that fast. I am going to visit my daughter and I found someone in Oshawa that will give me a few lessons. Thank you for your videos.
Wow! What a great video. I just took a break from what I was hooking and went over to a bracelet I had on another frame, and added some quadrupled yarn. Whoa! Magic! Thanks so much. I just discovered you today, and am LOVING your videos, your sense of humor and creativity supportive attitude towards fiber freaks finding their own way. More please!!!
Awesome video! 100 percent answered my question! I’m Brand new at this and thought I could get acrylic yarn but never thought about when i steam it. Love love love the doubling up for colour pops.
I love your channel! Thank you so much. I am new to rug hooking and love mixing fibers in my rugs...though most of what I do is wall hangings and pillows. I am so glad I found you!
I’ve been searching thru so many videos trying to find out about hooking with yarn. You answered ALL of my questions..!! So informative and fun (love your son’s cameo). Thank you..!!
I've always hooked with yarn (about 12 years now) and find that 'packing' is good with yarn, but 'bad' with wool strip. Many yarns are smoother and packing helps them stay in the backing. Also, I have found that though I tend to want a 'low' pile, that if I go for a higher pile, and pack it dense enough, the rug is very stable, cushy and looks great.
love it - your videos are fantastic... very interesting - a lot of the stores etc we cant access and it shows how different it is in Australia to the US.. as we have limited stores - however we do have a lot of natural fibres & lucky me - i spin, weave, knit & crochet so I have a huggggeeee stash of yarns ;) cant wait to give it a shot thank you
I love your Buttons design, great colors. I'm having a struggle with it having to be wool yarn, and need a cheaper way to get started to make sure I like it first. Being in Maine and a remote area (and a brand new beginner) not only are there no stores that sell wool yarn, it's difficult knowing if you even like the hobby yet. Hobby Lobby sells exactly two types and colors I believe, Lyons cream and a khaki color. Anyway, to order online it would be a big investment to order full skeins without knowing if you like it yet. I have lots of cheap acrylics - LOTS! - from looming but wool is just not easily available. I've been binge watching your videos since last night!
Definitely use acrylics. Grab those big multi color cakes and separate the colors. Sometimes one cake has 10 or more distinct colors and it's great to work with
Not to worry. Use your synthetic. I mix both together, and did early pieces with almost entirely synthetics. Works fine, and I did not have any bleeding when pressing. But it does sort of pill in a foot rug… blurring the pattern. Not an issue for art pieces on the wall. Besides which, I can buy left overs readily found in thrift stores. But I watch for wall blends a d pure wools , which I choose first. I have several friends who watch out for me when shopping thrift stores, so I have quite a large collection now…. Ow I need storage ideas!
You can order yarn online from knit picks for 100% wool for very reasonable prices. Their yarn is called Wool of the Andes and is a workhorse yarn. And lots of solid colors. Plus if your in Maine there is a Canadian yarn called Briggs and Little that is very affordable. There is a distributor in Maine!
@@RibbonCandyHooking ty!! Im new at rug hooking and the fact id have to look for the wool myself was unmotivating. Ill definitely try the yarn. Do you double up for all stitches or are some ok the single strand? Thx! Love your videos 🥰
PS re previous comment. Forgot to mention I am enjoying using your yarn technique on rug warp. Linen does feel a bit loose. Rug warp seems like a pleasant compromise between monk's cloth and linen.
Wonderful video! What size hook are you using for most of your projects? I spin my own yarn and have from lace to super bulky that I want to use... I especially want to hook medium & bulky and some lock spun that's probably super-bulky in some places.
I always use a larger sized hook. A lot of the sites are selling them in 2 sizes. It so hard because they're not standardized on every site, but I always use a large one even with yarn. I tried some of my teeny tiny hooks with sock yarn hooking and found it was still easier to use a larger headed hook. I have actually yet to find a use for my really tiny hooks. I like trying new ones at the local rug hooking shop... not open now... but most shops let you try a hook before you buy.
Brand new here and love your RUclips channel! I've been binge watching. I'm just wondering where you get your super bulky yarn from as well as where I could find the "wool sheets" that you cut into strips undyed.. I'd like to be able to to dye my own but haven't had any luck sourcing out what your bulky yarn looks like or the wool sheets (undyed) that I can dye and cut. Thank you so much! I just joined your face book group tonight!
Hi Deanne Thank you so much for your videos. I'm a beginner and I'm finding it difficult not to pull out the previous 'loop', I also have difficulty 'catching' the whole fibre and not splitting it when I catch it, and removing the hook from the yarn once I've pulled it through - is this just a beginner-thing that will resolve or am I doing something very wrong? I haven't yet obtained a frame so perhaps some of the awkwardness could be explained by this?
I thank you for all of the different yarns to use. Can you please add the numbers and seconds time , where you show how to actually hook, in case I get lost? Thanks!
Hello again. You mentioned that you buy your sari silk yarn from Diana OBrien's shop on on ETSY but I cannot find it. Can you tell me the name of her shop? Thank you.
Hi, please can you tell me if I need to wash the backing material, before I use it? Here in the UK I can't seem to get my hands on rug warp, linen is a bit too expensive for me. However I was reading up on monks cloth which I can get, and it says that it shrinks. When you block the final product with steam will the backing not shrink? Finally, if I'm making a rug, how do I clean it if I can't throw it on the washing machine. Thank you, Stella
Hi Stella you definitely don't need to wash your backing but just make sure that the monk's cloth at your seeing is not the most cloth 4 cross-stitch but the monks cloth for rug hooking either way you don't need to watch it
On the monks cloth you mean? If so it's gridded 100%cotton standard. If I'm hooking with really thin yarn I double it up only so hooking goes faster. The backing will be standard though.
Let me ask someone who's smarter than me! I would love love love to see at! Are you in the Facebook group is well or not on Facebook?xx the group is Rug Hooking & Punch Needle Club.... or you can always email me at ribboncandyhooking@gmail.com...I'll figure out about the RUclips part too!××
Is this a fair question? You and many "hookers" where do you find the material that you use in the videos? JoAnna's,HobbyLobby,Walmart at least in my "neck of woods" rural Missouri , don't carry in their stores. So then the material you have to purchase from each talented teacher?
That's a very fair question. It can be hard. First, if you're on facebook, check facebook marketplace. You put in your location and it'll show you if anyone near you is selling a lot of supplies. I've found many lots this way - people sadly pass away or give up hooking and will sell a bundle of wool for an excellent price. There aren't a lot of brick and morter shops anymore. I'm lucky to have one an hour and a half away - still an hour and a half! I order a lot online on etsy and through various rug hooking shops like Searsport, Cushing Dorr, and particularly smaller shops to help the littler businesses out. Shipping flat rate is ok. I have a group facebook page called Rug Hooking & Rug Braiding of New England. It sounds regional but there's people even from Canada in the group. People post supplies that are often a bargain on there, and you're very welcome to ask questions there too. It's a very friendly group. I sell supplies in posts there sometimes and do giveways too. I'm putting the July one together now. If you have Goodwill or Savers or thrift shops there - consignment shops - you can grab wool there too. You'll need to cut it along the seams, so I find longer skirts and pants can give more material than a heay blazer sometimes. I hope this helps. I pull from all over the place but it can be hard, so I'm always searching! x

That's such a good point! I'm going to cite that as my reason for packing my wool strips so badly every time I hook with wool!
@@RibbonCandyHooking no! Don't pack with wool strips! Just when using yarn and only if you need to.
