Glad it was helpful!
I am so amazed at the variety of fabrics you have behind you here! GOSH i would move to the US just for all the variety and options you have for crafting!
It is a collection that took many years to put together. I hit what I call critical mass about 10 years ago. That was where I could hook any thing I wanted and I had the right wool on the shelf.
Fantastic video on different rug backs very helpful

Great video! Very informative.
So rug warp over linen !?
That is my preference for a TON of reasons.
Thanks very much for the time to cover these items in this video; I especially love that you covered longevity!
Glad it was helpful!
I wish i would have found your video before ordering all my material. Just got into tufting rugs and omg...awesome. Anyways, great info
I don't use a tufter or a punch. I hook from the front. Fuels my need to see what I am doing as I do it.
what cloth do you use and where did you get them?
I'm just learning so I bought a underlay nonslip plastic and made a yarn rug for dog. Cindy 65
Animals love wool.
Thank u for info
Welcome
Good info
Choosing the right backing is the most important decision you make when your rug hook a rug.
Thank you for sharing. I'm interested in hooking for my dollhouse rugs. What size do I need for rug warping? And where would I need to purchase?
I would look into needle punching using embroidery thread. Even our smallest cuts would be too large for doll house rugs.
If one wants to make a 6 ' x 9' rug, how do you get backing that you don't have to piece together for that size since most backing is 60" wide?
I now sell 75" wide rug warp. Since what you want to hook is 72", you would have to sew on excess fabric at the edges to make the backing sit comfortably on your frame. To accomodate the 9' length, buy 4 yards (I sell the rug warp in full yard increments.)
You can buy it here: cindigayrughooking.com/product/rug-warp-rug-hooking-backing/
The primary tuft cloth that you describe for rugs you sell it or where I can get it for quantity
I don't know about tufting, but I sell rug warp on my website, cindigayrughooking.com/product/rug-warp-rug-hooking-backing/
I'm just getting started and I'm researching supplies (cheaply) Where can I get grippers? I can have my husband make me a stand much cheaper than buying one but I'd need grippers. Also, do I have to use wool or can I use cheaper fibers? Wool is expensive and I hate to put a lot of money into a new venture if I'm not sure I'll like it or not. Thanks!
On Amy Oxford channel you'll find full information!
You can use whatever fiber you like, but in the long run wool is cheaper because it just does not get dirty and wears forever.
Hi just found you and been making rag rugs but I can’t get rug warp I use burlap and find it ok but my first rug only lasted 6 years I washed it in the washer I used fleece that was ok but the burlap rotted it broke my heart because I had to throw it away but I kept the fleece I hope to use it again x I’ve started another rug now and hope it stays ok thanks 🙏 Wendy uk 🇬🇧
Burlap has a very short life. That is the main reason I do not recommend it for rugs.
I can't seem to find Rug Warp, online.
Do I need to look it up under a different name?
Is it available through Amazon or should I stick to a certain manufacturer?
Keep it simple. I sell it online in my online store. Go to ccindigayrughooking.com/product/rug-warp-rug-hooking-backing/
Burlap is only 3.99 a yard. Monks cloth is used as a backing on most large tufted rugs. It will last a long time with a fiber glue backing.
Is burlap still okay to use? Monks cloth prices hurt my soullll
@@youngkale2685 im not sure where you live but download the joans app and if there is one near you, you can use coupons and it’s 14.99 a yard but the coupons are usually 50% off so it’s only 7!
The "backings" you can buy at a fabric store are not intended for rug hooking. You will not get your best product. Why skimp on backing, even expensive linen at $30 a yard when the wool your are buying to make the rug costs hundreds of dollars?
Is rug warp a good product for tufting machines? From what she said it seems it would be but I know tufting guns are obviously stronger then punching.
I've never used a tufting machine, so I do not know.
Quick question, how do you stretch the giant room-sized rug you are making when you are working on it? The picture you showed looked like you had it lying on the floor, so just curious. :) thanks!
You can see my initial set up here: cindigayrughooking.com/how-to-hook-large-rug/ The only change is that I screwed a 1/4 sheet of plywood to the bottom by drilling up from the bottom into the feet of my stand. That is really all I needed. You do not need a large frame because your arm is only so long, right?
@@rughooking Thank you for the reply! So you use some sort of metal podium. Interesting! Is this the only way you've seen people hook a large rug besides stretching the cloth over some stretcher bars?
@@ea.g Not sure what you are asking. Most rug hooking frames have gripper strips that hold the rug tight from below. You only need a surface large enough to work on, not large enough for the entire rug.
Hello, please tell me what fabrics are needed for taffeta machines? weave a carpet.
Посмотрите Amy Oxford канал. Получите массу нужной информации! Успеха!
You would have to ask someone who does that type of technique.
Is that a zig zag stitch on the trim of the rug warp???
Yes, it prevents the backing from unraveling. You can also simply use duct tape.
Very interesting video. Thank you! ❤️ Can rug warp be used for locker hooking?
bonnie musselman yes it can.
My mom did a lot of locker hooking and always used latch hook canvas that you can get at any fabric store. The cotton she cut was quite thick. It made a look larger than a #8. I doubt she could have used rug warp, but if you cut it thinner, you probably can.
I'm Marilyn Vance thank you
Does rug warp work for Punch Needle rug making?
Depends on what you are punching with. There are so many variables.
8 of March my bertday
Happy Birthday!
Is burlap just as good? Thanks.
No, burlap can rot in as little as 15 years. I’ve been Hooking for 21 years. I would be devastated if my first rugs were rotten. Linen and rug warp (cotton) lasts for generations.
Can i use canvas or calico fabric?
I don't recommend them. They are stiffer fabrics than wool and absorbent which means they get dirty quicker. Wool rugs just shrug off the dirt. They never seem to get dirty.
Can cross stitch material be use?
You can punch with embroidery floss but it is not useful as a rug. We use wool fabric cut into small strips. You need a special backing for that. You can buy that from my online store at cindigayrughooking.com/shop
Is the rug warp referred to weavers cloth?
No- they're different fabrics. Weaver's cloth is primarily used with smaller punch needle embroidery.
Mystele thank you, i finally figured that out .
@@PoohBah There's so much info!! I just started punch needle recently. Take care!!
Mystele thank you and they are lot of supplies to get when you start it. Crafts aren’t cheap they can get expensive. You take care.
@@PoohBah YEs! I thought my paint supplies were expensive...oh my WORD!! This stuff is so pricey, but I'm having a blast!
Is this different from a latch hook rug?
Meghan Miller yes it is.
I think of latch hook as a craft while rug hooking is also a craft, it becomes and art form because you no longer have to assemble it in straight rows.
It's hard to get material where l live
Most people cannot get materials where they live. Find a teacher. Most do not have stores, but they sell out of closets or basements. Try Dorr Mill Store for basics. I sell backing and wool on my website, cindigayrughooking.com
can i tuft with rug warp? does anyone knows?
You can always order a sample. I have a beginner piece available for only a few dollars. cindigayrughooking.com/product/rug-warp-rug-hooking-backing/
@@rughooking ok I’ll check it out
What about Jean material
Denim is stiff and would be hard to pull up but the main reason I would not use it would be how absorbent it is. Wool repels water and stays remarkably clean with very little effort.
Just to let you know burlap is under 3.00 per yard at walmart.
is it as good as monks cloth? the prices on monks cloth are absurd
If you don't care that all your hard work only is gonna last 15 years then go for it. But why follow and listen to an artist and then not take heed to her advice. Or attempt the video. I'm thinking you haven't seen it yet.
Why would you chase down $3.00 backing that is going to rot quickly when you are spending up to $90 a yard for the wool? Use linen or my favorite, rug warp. They will last as long as the wool does.
Crap,I just bought 6 yards of burlap be ause it was on sale for 2$ per yard 😨😨
You can always use it to make a texture sampler, something I teach in the Color Planning Course.
I have a friend that's been hooking 😂sorry😏
Why don't you join her? It is soooo much fun to travel to rug hooking events with a friend.
Prea multă vorbărie,activitate prea puțină
I'm sorry you thought it was too much talk. You could simply try each of the backings yourself.
