Hooking with T shirts is a great way to recycle your redundant clothing they also come in a good selection of colours and you can dye them too if you so wish... we have been hooking with T shirts in the Uk for years as not everyone likes or has a good stash of wool... wool is not that easy to find here ... I have a proddy mat I made from t shirts about 20 years ago and it still looks fine.... I wouldn't put a t shirt rug in a very high traffic area as they do hold the dirt eg in a door way... t shirts are easy to collect making it possible to make a quick start :)
Yes I find it really annoying that the people who sort out the bags in charity shops throw all the felted jumpers and blankets etc into the blue bags that firms buy and then sell on. We can't find old ledgers or library cards and tickets, things that are used to make Junk Journals. It seems that many Sorters are not Crafters!

Yes, I use a rotary cutter that they use for quilting (looks like a pizza cutter) on a cutting mat. I use a yardstick as a guide to make my strips around 3/8" wide. It's pretty easy and quick.
