I'm almost 80 yrs. old and come from Lancashire England. These types of rugs were made by women at home out of any supplies they could Often the backing was corn or wheat sacks. The fabric used was anything that could be cut into thin strips. They lasted for years, which was the point.
Hello Vera, my Grandma was English and she had some of those rag rugs on her floor. I never saw her make them, so I am not sure if she bought them off of a friend or made them herself when us grand kids weren't around visiting her. I can't ask her now because she has passed away, 10 years ago, unfortunately. Would she have used a tool like in this video to make them?
You truly are an Artist with your unique and calm way of explaining your art and ways and your work is beautiful. I appreciate your extremely calming music which is a beautiful background to your voice and art. I could listen to you for hours. Thank you so much xx
I really love your type of hand motions for your punches. My favorite is using the side of the needle. ❤overall your explanation of being an artist motivates me to create a video as to why I am one also. Thanks.
I have taught this project to my art students. There is a punch needle rug of a cat in a chair made by a student in 1975 hanging in my classroom right now. The only amazing difference is that the side with the loops was our right side and the side you display in your video was the back side. This is my first time seeing your method as the front. It goes to show you that you can learn something new everyday. The arts are always so amazing!
Hi, and you can be lucky and you have freedom to do what you like even if you have five minits free....important is what you want to do....after you start it will be wonderful.
@@amandamanjarres4716 I feel your temporary circumstance....getting a tool or supply ish something always brightens the day and sometimes getting overwhelmed happens too =) Focus on what you can make even sketching with pencil or pen and paper ANY paper.....its about having fun and being creatively inspired OR NOT as well ---- do your best to focus on the small things and begin there....I hope you start making wtvr you decide to make!! Cheers from moi🍁 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
As a mom of 3 I really relate to this. I started crochet a couple years ago and its been so nice to finally have a creative outlet again. You can pick up and do just a little at a time and leave out.
Love your work. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Really like the idea of creating art with sheets, cutting it into thin strips and needle punching with it. Never knew that could be done. If I lived in New York I would definitely join your class but at least I can watch from my sofa all the way from the UK 🇬🇧
Thank you for sharing your creativity and ability to find a medium in which to express your talent. Your pieces are unique and beautiful, I love how you use environmental friendly methods and materials to imprint art.You inspired me to be more creative not just by making an art piece but in discovering mediums and methods that will be helping the environment.
Hi Rose you came up on my home screen and I am so glad. When I was young rag rugs were what I was shown how to do and have fond memories of doing it with my grandmother. Thank you for bringing back those memories and showing how different it now is. I am going searching now for one of those hooks you use. Thank you also for allowing me to see what I have and how to use it. I am a crafter of various mediums so now I can use my huge collection of tapestry wools I was thinking of getting rid of. Hugs and Loves xx
Oh my gosh!!! This was JUST what I was looking for and didn't know it!! I almost didn't click to find out "What she Makes"! lol Funny how what you seek somehow finds you😍
You don't understand how happy I am to come across your video. I'm a 36 year old city girl, but I feel like I should live in the mountains far away from people. I love the idea of making the things I use. I will definitely start making my own rugs now that I watched your video. I always wanted to know how they were made. Thank you so much.
I found you so inspiring. For most of my life I have always felt something in me but could never work it out & now I'm going to add another craft to my list along side of learning macrame & crocheting that I've only learnt 4 or 5 months ago. I'll finish my summer shawl off 1st before I start this project...maybe lol. Thank you for your lovely video 🥰🍀
Thank you for this. My great Aunt would cut her strips of wool and other fabrics on an old wool cutter. There were many frames, some with stands throughout the front livingroom , where various works were in progress. I just love your pieces.
Ahhhh! Now I really want to do rug punching! I don't know if there is enough room in my art area. I need to stop watching art videos. Rose's work is so beautiful and calming, and practical.
So beautiful. I too am a painter and mother with little children in a small space. I’m so excited to start this creative journey using this new medium! I’ve struggled getting my paints out and having that studio space.
Creating so much with so little..imagination and circumstance carries you there..brilliantly beautiful idea..thanks for introducing this for inspiration..⭐
She seems to have a beautiful home, a nice place to do her stuff, she does not look worried for anything, money.. not a problem I guess, people at her charge.. don't think so, life don't give her any stress.. it look like this...🙄 I believe she got more than a 'little' 😏 and so she does not created that much 😬. The punch needles are not a new invention btw. 👍
malkarton Yes, very relaxing to watch, and very inspiring. Artists have the ability to change the mode of art when necessary, like she and her mother both did. I am not an artist, but so appreciative that others are. 😊
Rose, I ran across your video. I feel like I know you as I followed your Mom, Dad and you kids through things they put on the web. Plus I won your Mom's paper pattern for her rug hooking pattern "Expect Good Things" which I have hooked. Really like this video you have done.
I found rug hooking with the oxford needle to be very relaxing. I loved your video. It has inspired me to try something more abstract and without a pattern. Thank you.
Hi, great video, love the use of textures. The pillows are gorgeous. What kind of yarn, cloth and needle do I have to use if I want to make pillows like those? Thank you.
I would love to know about using the tool you have here......I did not know it could be done with yarn....I did a tiny bit of wool strips hooking once...any video or a really good book you have checked. Out, it is really hard to find the right books and expensive...I work and classes not around here for much..LOL...This really excites me...Thanks....
How BEAUTIFUL is this, and super relaxing....thanks for sharing this video...I look out for more.. Maybe I will go trey it myself. Aniet from the 🇳🇱 Netherlands ( Holland).
Aw man. I'm gonna need to lay off the craft channels in this quarantine. I just spent money on embroidery stuff to do that for the first time. I crochet, sew, paint, draw, I try to knit but I'm not great, and I love ceramics and macrame. I just wanna do all the stuff 😍
I would love to see the right side of the rug you punched with fabric. I have many fabric strips here that I use for rag rugs but would love to try to use it up using a punch. What is the material you punch on? Thanks so much! Love your work :)
omg those cushions look so fluffy!! Im a beginner at needle punching and this is a great inspiration, I would love to know what materials does she use if anyone knows, to make rugs and pillows!! thanks this was lovely
Rose, you’re work is beautiful. Each piece you showed in your video was lovely. I especially loved the handbag and tissue holder. Did you also make the baskets? Do you sell on Etsy? If not, you should. Thanks for sharing the things you make. Would love to see more.
Hi Rose. Your work is amazing 😍. I wanna try this but not sure what size of that punch needle is ok to make rugs . I would be using some fabrics as well as yarns.
Onion can be used to make a pretty dye. Ice seen it on a manor house type thing where there was this older woman wanting to dye her hair only she couldn't use a synthetic hair dye because they weren't common back in that time frame and she had to use onions to dye her hair. I forget what color they end up dyeing the water, but I remember it can be a pretty color
This was very interesting. I feel the same way about hand embroidery as she does with rug hooking. I wanted her to note that acrylic is also extremely toxic in the air so you DEF don’t want that around your loved ones.
i hear you. i stashed art material for 25 years when, i was raising my children. I bought from charity shops, free stuff from Freecycle etc. but still only have weekends (sometimes). but hey, i'm making art now. little baby steps.

Crochet is brilliant in that you don't need to finish the row every time and there's usually only one stitch on the hook.
This was so relaxing and educational. I recently got admission into textile designing. Wish me luck ❤
fun! good luck
Good luck.. Have a wonderful time
