Love seeing john playing and explaining tone. If he had an youtube channel I would watch it all day! Mesa please make more and more videos with him. Also, what a beast of an amp. Sounds amazing
he has a channel, sadly doesnt do stuff like this too often though
2:34 - 2:44. That Petrucci face when discover something new. lol
really rich sounds!!!Love this boogie thing!
That playing is so spectacular, it sounds insane
God, that intro gets me every time!! The tone! The melody! UGHH
So Sweet Lead Tones !
mother of all tones!!!! please john have mercy!!!
sounds amazing
This is getting really expensive for me, John. First you were selling the Mark V so i bought one, now you're selling the iic+ and i just bought one. Im afraid if a Mark VI ever comes out i will be divorced and broke. Kidding of course, these are badass amps. I'm just trying to figure out how to run both heads. Been a boogie fan since i first head MOP and Stryper and a boogie owner aince the late 90s. ive owned a triple rec, a couple dual recs and a roadster but the Mark amps are it for me. My wife thinks i am selling the Mark V since i now have the jp2c but she is sadly mistaken.
Holy cow, every year passes and John's guitars look more and more beautiful. Too bad it's too expensive.
EPIC!!!
Love the solo stance he gets into! You can see him exiting it at 1:43
Killer amp and priced well :). 3 channels, 2 EQs, full MIDI. Can't go wrong.
unless you want that lol!! love you man! sounds beautiful!
1:08 " [ ... ] splitting peoples' skulls open [ ... ] "
Adam02, is that you?
These guys who can just kill you straight away, I feel that's the best way possible for me to die.
Sounds great ! I hope Mesa does either a 25 or 35 watt version down the road
Yep done ✅
I have the 35 watt woooooooo
what the heck is with the beard john,,,,geeeeezzzzz
love the video...getting one of these real soon!!!!!!!
If ever Billy Gibbons quits ZZ Top, John's ready to go !
I m looking to get the same sound on the triaxis with 2:90 Stereo simul class with two 2x12 Mesa Boogie Recto Horizontal Cabinet...and i m trying the lead 2 red..Amazing..
I want to see a Kemper do this! Believe me I tried! I did! It's really good, but it can't get the dynamics of the tubes. This tone is beautiful!
Plug your Kemper into a 2:90 and into 4x12’s and you’ll get it.
A bit of Psycho Petrucci breaking through there at 1:08
my headphones which are very expensive, are resonating while john is playing that solo LOL
Damn! That was a near perfect lead tone IMHO.
Any idea what the subdivisions of his two delays are?? It's not 1/4 + dotted 1/8th, but I can't figure it out
why I can't hear the sound like this from DT's album that released recently
whose fault?
That beard looks like it's stuck on.
Would be nice to see a different pickup setup on this amp.. I mean what does it sound like with a fender strat or seymour duncan pick ups or different dimarzios etc..

What's the specific frequency that's being boosted when the presence knob is pulled?
Love the toné but how come the cabs are not miked?
wonder if he is running direct though cab clone or how is i mic'd? sounds awesome!
Hi +Shadowsreach1 - The recording details are all listed in the description for each video. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching! :)
Awesome Thank you sorry should have read that haha
Tab that solo please...
Which song is he playing at the beginning?
A storm.
What delay does he use?
Chase his tone and be ready to drain your bank account
Yeah nice outfit
I'm a huge fan of Mesa Boogie products and of John Petrucci also, just check my channel for proof but for me the Mark IV tones are unbeatable. That triode setting is heavenly.
It's crazy that until I heard the dry Channel 3 tone just now that I never realized just how much gain he actually has on that. Almost a bit too much for me, I see he pegs the gain on that channel lol.
Indeed, +James Russo - John is a gainiac! :)
What settings would you use for that dual delay effect at 2:36? Would you use 2 delays in series? I have an Axe-Fx II.
probably one multidelay with different settings (quarters on one side, 8th note triplets on the other side) and that should give you an effect similar to this one. Maybe he stuck two multidelays in series, which then could give you this feeding back into each other effect. hope that helps!
Mahmoud Kattan thanks for the suggestion. I will try that!
My friend linked me this video asking the same exact question -- here's what I've found (and it's definitely not typical!):
There are two delays lines happening here, but it's not dual independent delays OR a a 2-tap delay (it sounds close to a 2-tap delay, but not quite) -- it's two delays feeding backing both into themselves AND each other (cross-feedback) at the same time, and to my ears, it sounds like there's a bit of diffusion, filtering, and (possibly) modulation going on too.
I was able to get a pretty good version of this working on my Lexicon PCM80 by using 444 ms (L) and 739 ms (R) for the two delays, w/feedback + cross-feedback; on the Axe-FX II, though, there are some specialized algorithms that I'm almost certain were used for this preset, namely *Plex Delay* and *Plex Detune* (p.80-83 in the manual), both of which have the low & high-cut filters, diffusion (in the feedback path, so it gets "smeared" more and more on every repeat -- hence the reverb-like aura after a few repeats), and a "feedback matrix" (so all delays get fed back into themselves AND each other -- and you can do up to 4 this way).
Now, you could set it up for a 2-Tap delay and use feedback on both taps; but that doesn't sound as wide in stereo, since the feedback for the two taps get "summed" on each repeat...it's still "wide," but not as "wide" as 2 plex delays, and loses its sense of rhythmic "bounce" after a few repeats (whereas the plex delays generally don't--at least when there's not too many).
There might be a good preset to start from already on the Axe. If I were you, I would check all the presets that use either of those two algorithms -- *Plex Delay* or *Plex Detune* -- and see if there are any "simpler" sounding delays made out of that (you are certainly going to find a lot of big modulated "soundscape" verbs created with it -- that's what it's most renowned for).
Basically, you just need:
(1) 2 plex delays (444ms & 739ms -- or 450ms and 740ms, if you want round numbers ;) ) ... (2) high & low cuts (I'd probably use between 3 and 4.5 kHz for high cuts, and 200 Hz for low cut) ... (3) diffusion ... (4) modulation and/or detune (you might be able to sweep the detune w/an LFO, which can sound really nice -- otherwise, add a little modulation in the *Plex Delay* algorithm to give it a little more liveliness) .... There might be more to it, but that should get you at least 95% the way there!
This is awesome +Ryan Blossey! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)
No problem! :)
Is there a Guitar Pedal that does this? I have a super-high-end Muff and it doesn't cut-thru in a Band mix?
Mesa Boogie Flux Drive ?
simple stupid question....what tune is that called he is playing solo for dont have new album
Our New World
Anybody else hearing Norwegian Wood? :D
Yes! :)
What song??
I love how mesas look but when i hear it im always like eh
What song on this video?
Solo of "Our New World" from The Astonishing album
config delay, please!!!!!
See my channel for JP lead tone - you can take the ping pong settings for delay near the end of the video.
Looks like the Son of Leland Sklar
You can hear horses and bears from his guitar.
John strting to look like Moses man...
santa clause?
6 persons played the wrong note.
excellent tone, but way to expensive
Liquid Distortion Experiment
You know you have a good beard when it looks like it's fake.
Please check out #abim finger. 11 year old
This is a tone that costs how many months salary ?
Depends on how many you earn a month
Tamer anwar will cost you a kidney and part of your liver
I prefered the dry tone before all the effects got turned on.
Ah man, his tone is very nice, but I feel that over the years he almost done too much to it. I really dislike the amount of compression that's on it, perhaps it's the gain, or something, but it mushes the tone. I wish he had the headroom he had in his era with the picasso ibanez. It's almost the same tone really, but far more dynamic and woody sounding.
A bit tongue in cheek, but judging from his appearance, overdoing it is the name of the game these days it seems.
his guitar looks too small lol cuz he got a big body
I've played on a jp6, they are actually as small as they look
One thing I never see as many of these videos on the jp is any one handed legado play. 98% of every note i've ever seen on this amp is struck. Why is that? Where are the mesa videos that prove its liquidy worth of the legado type player or does every note indeed need to be picked. Nothing worse then having to force your fingers on the fret board in order to make the notes heard. I notice that a guitar players style after time reflects the amp he uses. Is this why John is a note picker and virtually no legado? I've asked this question before but it seems to always go unanswered. What does the term liquid mean to you?
just search "in the name of god solo" and you ll see legato
Hi +jeff mays - Good question! Sustain is much more a product of the physical relationship between the output from the amp & cab and the magnetic pickups being affected by that sound pressure. Gain/saturation certainly affects sustain, but the much greater influence is the feedback loop (not feedback in the sense of squealing, although that is an element) created by the pickups being influenced to sustain by the resonant note being held. This type of feedback loop can be created with nearly any amp scenario once you realize what generates it. One of the reasons people love tube amps is because of the interaction between player, the fingers toughing strings and holding notes, and the tubes reaction to these incredible finite subtleties. When the volume is cranked up to the right level for the room, the strings take on an 'elastic, rubber band feel', and playing becomes more effortless... this is what many great players describe as liquid. From this point, sustain, whether achieved from legato playing or picked or whatever approach, becomes easy as pie and smooth as silk. Take some time to find the sweet spot with your rig, your room and your guitar. And one final thing - many great players, especially those with abilities to play fast, have learned to turn the amp up and play very light - essentially letting the amp do the work. This is another factor in sustain - being able to turn the amp up but controlling loudness with lighter attack/technique. Anyway - vast subject - but also very cool subject as it relates to feel and being inspired to play the guitar. :) Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
MESA/Boogie Thanks sir, I made the trek to mesa hollywood yesterday. I put the jpc+ under careful scrutany. I was very very impressed and I'm sure the guys there were getting tired of me playing it for almost 2 hours. I am not an amp builder of course but rather a player that after 30 years knows exactly what I am looking for in an amp but have rarely found the magical inspiration. Dinesh Lekhraj was awesome from the time I walked in the door till the time I left. I really can't say enough about him. He knew exacxtly where I was coming from and He dialed in the tones for me. I have to say at first going thru the channels that I was not impressed nor inspired as the jp was stiff and I felt forced in my playing. The liquid legado feel I love was non existent. Then I plugged in the Mark 5 and we put it thru its paces and I was actually more impressed at that point and continued with various licks and power chords but the liquid feel was not there and like the jp it was pretty stiff and my playing reflected one that was clearly forcing the issue. I decided to go back to the jp one more time. After discussing the issue with Dinesh, he spent some time with the jp and I have no idea what he did but there it was in all of its liquid glory and I'm sure once I get my hands on it in a more intimate setting, I will be able to take it to super sonic heights. This is truly the first amp in years that I have played that checked all the boxes. At your store there is a 5 day return policy and the next time my band will get together is the 26th. I will be driving back to pick up the jp on the 23rd, and spend some time with it before practice. I'm waiting on pulling the trigger till then because if it does not hold up in a live setting with the band and cut thru the mix its useless to me. I feel the Mark 5 would cut thru better but its the jp I'm intersted in. I'll be using the 4 cable method and coupling it with my axe fx xl.
ioannisdenton That's not the the jp c+ but thanks. It does answer other questions but the jp c+ is what I'm interest in. I do know he uses the old c+'s for most of his recordings. John is an awesome player probably one of the best but I'm not a big dream theater fan per say. Thanks for clueing me in.
MESA/Boogie From what I've read based on your comment that would suit my playing would be a non negative feedback amp. from what I understand non negative feedback is where the looseness comes from but on clean and low end chunk its the negative feedback increase that achieves better performance. That makes perfect sence to me as the tighter the distortion and low end responce I've noticed that the solo play is stiff and not very inspiring. I have not noticed any amp I've ever owned in 30 years just coming to life from a change in volume due to room conditions. My feel dictates to me that even with reverb and delay don't help much either but using some od pedals at the front of some have loosened the feel. Thanks again for the help.
does not sound like a mkiic+ if it's a reissue it's wide of the mark...Please explain Why mesa doesn't release a METALLICA , SANTANA, NIGHT RANGER, OR JOHN SYKES SIGNATURE HEAD...UNLIKE PETRUCCI ALL THESE ARTIST HAD HITS...MANY HITS AND LEGENDARY TONES
the reason is simple.. John Petrucci is the king :) don't hate it just admit it:)
King of what? Beards...
If you wish.. yes
to be honest, it's in how it's recorded. JP's Mark IV tone on Scenes from a Memory is more or less like this JP2C tone, but with a little less "presence" cutting through. When he engages Shred mode, it sounds unreal.
Yeah we need a metallica amp, everyone can get the sound of pretty much every artist but not the metal gods
Who is this guy? He sucks, lol.
petrucci wannabe
